A controversial
beginning for
our beautiful
courthouse
The Grant County Courthouse is a majestic building located at the north end of
main street in Elbow Lake. Built in 1905,
the three-story brownstone structure
was the result of both bitter rivalries and
unusual cooperation among the county’s
early residents.
The need for a courthouse was first
realized in 1877 when most of the county’s
business was conducted in private homes
in and around Herman. A vote was taken
and $500 was allocated for the construction of a “suitable structure for the keeping of the county’s records.”
The majority of the county officials
felt the county seat should be located in
Elbow Lake since the city was centrally
located and on Nov. 1, 1878, the records
were relocated.
But Herman’s city fathers were not
going to be undermined. They argued
Elbow Lake was nothing more than a
stage depot with no railroad, a handful of
buildings and less than a hundred people.
The majority of the county’s population
was located around Herman, so they
got the Minnesota legislature to call a
special election to decide the county seat
question.
The special election was held and Herman won 439-369 but Elbow Lake called
foul. Ballot boxes from Erdahl and other
northeastern townships weren’t counted
and Logan Township ballots showed more
votes were cast than there were eligible
voters.
Despite a court order calling for a
recount, a posse of Herman supporters
raided the Elbow Lake courthouse and
took the county’s records back to Herman. Three months later, the courts ruled
in Elbow Lake’s favor and another posse
confiscated the records and returned
them to their rightful home.
In 1899, the county board voted to begin issuing a series of one two-point mill
levies to raise money for the construction
of a new courthouse. Within seven years
they raised $36,510 and were able to save
another $15,200 from the general fund.
On January 25, 1904, a mass meeting
was held to approve a final two-mill levy
and give the board authorization to construct a $55,000 courthouse.
A red brick building would have cost
$5,000 less but the majority of the people
at the meeting wanted the more attrac-

tive brownstone. The final cost of the
construction project was $61,000 for the
building and another $20,000 for the land
and miscellaneous expenses.
The original courthouse property was
just west of the current site but the board
wanted the new building to stand on the
small hill overlooking Central Avenue.
This land was owned by a speculator
named Knud Laastuen who wanted $750
an acre for the five-acre plot. The board
offered $300 an acre.
Elbow Lake contributed $1,500 to the
county to purchase the land but the board
members were stubborn. Then Laastuen
offered to sell all of his Elbow Lake holdings for $85 an acre which amounted to
$22,000.
At this time, the business community
formed the Elbow Lake Improvement
Association, bought Laastuen’s properties and sold the courthouse site for $150
an acre.

It was estimated the new courthouse
cost taxpayers an average of $1.84 per
quarter section a year which may be one
reason they were all so willing to celebrate
the laying of the cornerstone in such
grand fashion on Saturday, June 24, 1905.
Governor John A. Johnson and United
States Senators Knute Nelson and Moses
E. Clapp gave speeches and the Luther
College 42-piece band played the Star
Spangled Banner while the cornerstone
was laid in place.
An account of the day, printed in the
Grant County Herald, said the crowd of
3,000 fell silent as the huge stone was set
in place and then sang “America” as the
town band played.
The Grant County Old Settlers’ Reunion was held in conjunction with the
dedication ceremonies. This included a
picnic on the west lawn, a parade, race
down Central Avenue, hot air balloon
rides, a ball game against Glenwood
(who arrived by train) and a concert in
the evening.
The courthouse is made of Port Wing
brownstone, quarried near Duluth, with
steps of brown sandstone and a slate roof.
The floors are made of trass and marble
trim. The dome and skylight is painted
with images of Grant County agriculture.
A special supplement to the Grant
County Herald credited the construction
of the courthouse to the determination
and cooperation of the people of Grant
County.
“We live in an era of action. What men
say goes little in the balance against what
they do,” reported the Herald.
The courthouse project was a major
undertaking but the people of Grant
County wanted a monument to the
strength and vitality of our way of government.
Despite the controversy surrounding
the selection of the county seat in Grant
County, the early residents united to build
one of the most beautiful courthouses in
the state of Minnesota.
In 2011 and 2012 the Grant County
Courthouse underwent a $4 million
energy upgrade. Energy efficient windows and exterior doors were installed,
as well as a geothermal heating and
air conditioning system. Great detail
was given to keeping its original exterior look. The building was also gutted
and new floors and ceilings installed
in many rooms. The original terrazzo
floor in the lobby was refinished and the
building’s many murals and decorative
scroll work were analyzed as to their
historical significance and condition.
Further study is planned on how best to
stabilize the murals and scroll work to
protect them from deterioration. When
workmen removed an asbestos false
ceiling in the courtroom, a large previously unknown mural was discovered.
It also will be stabilized. A walk through
the three floors of the Grant County
Courthouse is a walk back in time.

Scofield Community Building and Thorson Memorial Library
Prominently situated at the intersections of state and U.S. highways resides
the Scofield Memorial Hall. Built in the
midst of the Great Depression, the building holds the distinction of being the first
project in the nation to receive funding
from Franklin Roosevelt’s Public Works
Administration.
The building opened in 1934 featuring an auditorium, dining hall and a
small public library. Dubbed the “Community Building”, it has been the site for
myriad community events; everything
from shooting practice to high school
proms, and Memorial Day programs to
polling sites.
In the 1960s and ‘70s the building
was re-purposed. The library relocated
from its quaint space at the north end of
the building to the space once occupied
by the auditorium. The city offices were
moved into the space vacated by the library. An addition followed to the south,
adding more civic space. These public
spaces are available for use by contacting
the city office.
Recently, the building has seen interior remodeling and renovation. The
library has added much needed space,
reclaiming areas that were once a balcony and stairwell. The original bathrooms
were cleared out to make way for a city
council chambers. The basement was
redone, and continues to maintain nearly
daily use for fundraisers and gatherings.
An application for consideration on the
National Register of Historical Sites is
in the works.
Our public library, named after
Harold Thorson, its initial benefactor, is
a hub of activity. Featuring a large collection of books and periodicals, and a
wealth of digital media, the library also
houses a computer lab and meeting
areas. There is ample space to relax and
get caught up on your reading. Summer
storytime is offered for children twice
weekly. The library welcomes citizens
and visitors six days a week and has
evening hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please visit the library webpage

Things to do
HUNTING
Grant County has always been known for good hunting,
from the Christina Lake waterfowl hunting near Ashby to the
pheasants that were taken in the west and southwest portion of
the county between Elbow Lake, Wendell, and Herman. Today,
with more conservation minded farming practices and game
management, Grant County continues to be a great place to
spend your time hunting.
Turkey hunting is fairly new to the area with a huntable
population throughout the county, except in the flats in western
Grant County. Ashby, Barrett, and Hoffman areas are excellent
starting points to look for these game birds. There are a large
number of public hunting areas open to all.
Deer hunting is good throughout the county. We have
a large amount of public land suitable for deer hunting in all
areas of the county, and odds are good that someone without
local land to hunt on can fill their tag on the public accesses.
Waterfowl is not much different as local shooting can
be great at times. Goose hunting can be a little more difficult
without private land to hunt. Geese usually leave their roost-
ing areas in the morning to feed in the harvested fields, so you
need to watch where they go and get permission to hunt that
land. Finding a place to hunt ducks, on the other hand, is much
easier. The numerous public accesses are the key.
GRANT COUNTY SHOOTERS
The Grant County Shooters Association (GCSA) is a
non-profit organization that provides a place to promote safe,
organized shooting sports for people in and around Grant
County.
The range is professionally designed and safety-oriented,
built to DNR and NRA specifications on a 13-acre site located
8 miles north of Elbow Lake and 7 miles west of Ashby at
33787 190th Ave., just 1/2 mile south of county line Hwy. 26.
The range features a 25 yard pistol range, a shotgun patterning range, an archery range, a trap house with designated
shooting positions, a 50-237 yard rifle range, and a 300-600
yard range. The range has a clubhouse for meetings and instructional use, storage for maintenance equipment, covered
benches on the rifle ranges, and outdoor toilet facilities, all
enclosed by fences and gates.
The Grant County Shooters host an open house the first
weekend in May. The range may also be reserved for groups
wanting to host events.
We offer one-year memberships. Contact one of the
GCSA Directors for details on memberships.

By Mike Frisch
Grant County offers ample fishing
opportunities for those who enjoy wetting
a line. A variety of lakes, featuring several
different species of fish, are present within
the county. While the walleye is probably
the most sought after fish, these lakes also
offer anglers opportunities to catch largemouth bass, northern pike, and panfish.
Pomme de Terre Lake, located four
miles east of Elbow Lake, offers anglers a
chance to catch walleyes, crappies, largemouth bass, sunfish, and northern pike.
This dark water lake has several good walleye “spots,” with the five to ten foot range
often a good depth to start your walleye
search. Use walleye tackle like Fire-Ball Jigs
and spinners tipped with live bait. Most
veterans of the lake feel it produces best in
the spring, again in the fall, and also offers
a good early ice bite.
Slab crappies are also present in Pomme de Terre. The fish are often found shallow in the spring. Small panfish jigs like
Gypsi Jigs tipped with crappie minnows are
the preferred bait of many fishermen pursuing crappies in the lake. Largemouth bass
are also caught in good numbers in Pomme
de Terre. Post-spawn bass are often found
in the shallows, and the few areas featuring
reeds are other popular bass spots. Spinnerbaits, Impulse Ribbon Worms, and jig/
soft bait combinations are all good bass
baits for this body of water.
Sunfish are caught in Pomme de
Terre in the weeds in the shallows. Small
Fire-Fly Jigs tipped with wax worms, small
leeches, or worms, are productive sunfish
baits. Northern pike are present in the lake
as well. A bright-colored spinnerbait fished
quickly through the shallows is a good way
to target these fish.
Three public accesses are available on
Pomme de Terre. On the south end of the
lake a concrete boat ramp is available by
going north off of Highway 79 at the entrance to Tipsinah Mounds Park. Fairhaven
Beach, located along County Highway 24
on the east side of the lake, offers a concrete
boat ramp, and a third access is available in
the northwest corner of the lake by turning
east off of County Highway 21 onto County
Road 49 and following it to the lake.
Pelican Lake, located just south of
Ashby along Highway 78, is one of the
county’s more popular fishing spots, and at
nearly 4,000 acres, the lake is also the county’s biggest. Crappies are one of the main
attractions on Pelican. The many shallow
bays in the lake hold good numbers of the
popular panfish in the spring and early
summer. Later in the summer the fish can
be found in the scattered reeds, or suspended in deeper water. Small jigs tipped
with minnows are good crappie baits in
this lake.
Walleye are also caught in Pelican
Lake. Weed edges, points, and drop-offs are
all key walleye holding areas. Fish are taken
on Fire-Ball Jigs, spinners, and crank baits.
Nice-sized sunfish are caught in Pelican’s shallows in the spring and suspended
out in deeper water in the summer. Small
jigs tipped with Impulse panfish softbaits
catch sunfish in this lake.
The lake’s numerous reed beds are
popular largemouth bass producing areas.
Casting spinnerbaits, buzz-baits, or jigs/
soft baits are often productive methods for
catching bass in the lake. Another great way
to target big bass in this lake is by cast and
retrieving a hollow body topwater bait and
working it back over heavy cover. LiveTarget’s Field Mouse and Frog are deadly for
this fishing style.
Northern pike can also be caught
along the weed beds and bulrushes by casting or trolling rattling crankbaits or spinnerbaits.
A public access to Pelican Lake, featuring a concrete boat ramp, is located just
off Highway 78 on the west side of the lake.
Barrett Lake, on the outskirts of the
city of Barrett, features northern pike, crappies, largemouth bass, and sunfish, though
walleyes receive the vast majority of the
attention in this dark water lake. Walleye
anglers usually do best in this lake early in
the season by fishing the four to ten foot
depths. Trolled Fire-ball Jigs or spinners
tipped with minnows, leeches, or nightcrawlers are usually leading producers.
Public access to Barrett Lake is available just east of the city along County
Highway 2 and features a concrete boat
ramp. A popular feature on Barrett Lake is
the public fishing pier which is located on
the south side of the lake just west of the
public access.
Two miles north of Wendell along
Highway #11 lies Lightning Lake. A public
park just off of the highway offers a concrete boat ramp and picnic tables. Intensive
stocking efforts have made the lake a good
walleye producer.
The lake, which is known for having a
good night bite, often produces good numbers of walleyes right along shore in the
Things to do
FISHING
spring of the year. Casting small Super-Glo
orange or chartreuse Fire-Ball Jigs tipped
with leeches or minnows into the shallows
in the spring is a proven method for taking
walleyes from Lightning.
Once the lake warms and weed
growth peaks, anglers are forced to fish
outside the weed edges in the six to eight
foot range to catch fish. Trolling spinners
tipped with nightcrawlers, leeches, or minnows behind bottom bouncers is a good
technique for this type of fishing.
Another useful tip for fishing Lightning Lake is that the windy side of the lake
usually out-produces the calm side.
Elk Lake, located just north of Hoffman on County Highway 5, is a small lake
utilized primarily by swimmers and water
skiers. The lake has, however, been stocked
with walleye fingerlings and adult bluegills.
Elk Lake receives light fishing pressure due
mainly to its small size.
Public access to the lake, featuring a
gravel boat ramp, is available on the south
end of the lake just off County Highway 5.
With several bodies of water present
and various fish species inhabiting those
waters, Grant County can be a fisherman’s
paradise. Whether anglers are into catching
walleyes, largemouth bass, northern pike,
or panfish, Grant County has something
for nearly everyone who enjoys fishing!

Roosevelt Hall
Hawkins Avenue, Barrett
Roosevelt Hall was constructed as a community auditorium
and high school gymnasium in the 1930s under the Civil
Works Administration. The building was named in President
Franklin D. Roosevelt’s honor and is one of the few CWA
buildings remaining
in Minnesota. The
building is now used
by the Prairie Wind
Players community
theater group as a
community theater,
arts and cultural center. Roosevelt Hall
was placed on the
National Register of
Historic Places in 1985.
Lakeside Pavilion, Barrett
The pavilion is one of few surviving lakeside facilities of its
kind. It is fully equipped for catering, has a separate bar service
area, stage for entertainment, and new handicapped accessible
bathrooms. Outside, it boasts adjacent grounds which include
a gazebo, sheltered picnic area, and a walkway to a fishing pier
with a spectacular view. Open for rentals May - September.
Pomme de Terre Village site
8 miles northeast of Elbow Lake
on County Rd. 4
10
Pomme de Terre village was the first village in Grant County.
It was laid out in 1868 by Timothy Heald and that plat was
recorded in 1874. Heald thought the location ideal as it was
situated on the stage road and a river, and had been surveyed
by the railroad for a future line. Heald built and ran a hotel
and tavern. In 1871, N.Q. Puntches moved his store from the
old Fort Pomme de Terre stockade to the new village. In 1873,
August Schaeffer and his brother-in-law Fred Williams built a
flour mill that in its heyday produced 200 barrels a day. In 1873,
the first meeting of the Grant County Commissioners was held
at Pomme de Terre in N.Q. Puntches’ store. The purpose of the
meeting was to determine the site of the county seat and to
appoint county officers. At its height, the village boasted two
stores, two blacksmith shops, the mill and elevator, a saloon
and hotel. In 1887, the mill and elevator burned. This event,
along with the growth of Herman and Elbow Lake and the
failure of the railroad to come through Pomme de Terre led to the
eventual demise of the village. The brick schoolhouse and pioneer
cemetery are all that remain of Pomme de Terre today.
Fort Pomme de Terre site
9 miles northeast of Elbow Lake
on County Rd. 4
Fort Pomme de Terre started out as a stage relay station
established by the Minnesota Stage Company in 1859, along
the stage line from St. Cloud to Fort Abercrombie. Following
the Sioux Uprising in 1862, military protection became the
norm along the stage line. In 1863 Captain Samuel McLarty
and troops of the 8th Minnesota Volunteers established a
post at the Pomme de Terre relay station and constructed a
stockade. A blockhouse, commissary, arsenal, and barracks
were later added. Fort Pomme de Terre became the principal
outpost between Alexandria and Fort Abercrombie. In 1864,
McLarty and his troops were relieved by Major Edwin Hatch
and a battalion of volunteer calvary. In the latter 1860s, with
the threat of Sioux attacks past, immigrants began settling the
area. Hatch’s battalion was mustered out of service in 1866 and
the fort went back to being a relay station and hotel. In 1868
the hotel, abandoned buildings, and surrounding land was
sold to David Burns, who continued to operate the store and
hotel for several years. In the early 1870s the store and then
the hotel, moved to the bustling village of Pomme de Terre,
just one mile to the west. Today all that remains of the fort
is a marker at the grave of two soldiers killed there in 1863.
Replicas of the fort can be seen at the Grant County Museum.
Tipsinah Mounds
3 1/2 miles east of Elbow Lake
on Highway 79
The name Tipsinah is from a Sioux word for a root vegetable that grew abundantly in the area and was a major food
source for the Indians. The peninsula was a Native American
gathering place for hundreds of years. There are numerous
burial mounds located on the property. Around the turn of
the century the Great Northern Railroad acquired the land
and established a hunting and fishing resort for friends and
relatives of James J. Hill, Great Northern’s owner. During the
1930s the resort area was known as Kenney’s Camp. William
C. Kenney, son of former GN president William P. Kenney,
spent summers at the resort. Clark Gable was one of the
many famous people who were guests at the camp. In 1956
the property was sold to Gould National Battery Company
and was used for the same purpose. In the late 1960s or early
1970s the land was sold to the Tipsinah Mounds Joint Powers
Commission. The goal of this commission was to have a golf
course built on the peninsula. However, the area proved to
be too small for even a nine hole course so the group decided
to develop a campground and recreation area on the property.
Niemackl Lake Park
3 miles southeast of Herman
Niemackl Lake Park was another area inhabited by Sioux
Indians for hundreds of years. A ring of water protected the
central area of the park from the frequent prairie fires. Two
large burial mounds are evident on the west edge of the park.
In 1872 the area became the property of Engelbert Niemackl
and it remained in the Niemackl family for over 100 years. In
1973 the Herman Development Corporation acquired the land
and deeded it to the city of Herman for the establishment of
Niemackl Lake Park.
Elk Lake Pioneer Cemetery
5 miles north of Hoffman on County Road 5
Elk Lake Cemetery was the first cemetery in Grant County.
The first school was also located near here. Although some
graves were moved to the Lincoln Church Cemetery after its
establishment, many of the county’s oldest pioneers remain
buried in the Elk Lake Cemetery. The cemetery was restored
by the Hubert Sholaas American Legion Post #398 of Hoffman.
Stone Bridge
1 mile north of Barrett
A remnant of horse and buggy days, this bridge, made of
hand cut stone is located on County Road 21 about 1/4 mile
east of Highways 55 and 59. The bridge was built in 1907 by
Norwegian immigrants Seivert Shervey, Tollef Nelson, and
Mons Ronhovde. It was abandoned in the 1920s when a wider
span was needed to accommodate increased automobile traffic
in the county. The site was refurbished from 2001-2003 by the
West Central Area School FFA.

Hereford Townsite
3 miles southwest of Wendell
Hereford was located on a branch line of the Great Northern
Railroad on the edge of the Red River Valley. The construction of a railroad station in 1886 brought forth its birth. Since
agriculture has played an important role in the growth of this
county, it is perhaps fitting that this village was named not for
a man, but for the breed of cattle owned by the owner of the
land where the village developed. Hereford once boasted two
grain elevators, a coal shed, a blacksmith shop, a general store,
a lumber yard, a stock yard, depot, church and cement block
factory. By 1939 Hereford was a ghost town. Today all that
remains is the church cemetery.
Lake Agassiz beach ridge
and mammoth bone site, Herman area
Visible in the Herman and Norcross area are glacial beach
lines of glacial Lake Agassiz. Lake Agassiz existed until about
4,000 years ago. As the lake receded north sand beaches
were formed, marking the stages in its history. The beaches
are known by the names of the nearby towns. The Herman
beach is the highest and marks the lake’s largest extent. The
Norcross, Tintah and Campbell beaches represent successive
levels reached while the waters receded. On September 11, 1928
in a gravel pit along the Herman beach, two teeth and several
other bones were found. They were later identified as mammoth bones. The mammoth was a large elephant-like herbivore
which lived in Minnesota over 10,000 years ago. Some of these
bones are now on display in the Grant County Museum. A
historical marker located about 2 miles west of Herman on
Hwy. 27 marks the approximate location of this find.

VETERANS MEMORIAL
Veterans Memorial Hall is part of the
Grant County Historical Society Museum
in Elbow Lake. It was built to honor all
those men and women have served to
preserve freedom and democracy. The
Hall contains historical items, from a
realistic scale model of Fort Pomme de
Terre, to personal uniforms and other
items that Grant County soldiers, sailors,
and airmen carried on the field of battle.
There is also a library of military books,
newspaper articles, and photographs for
research.
We are free today because of those
who served our country. May we always
be grateful to those who paid with their
lives. Sixty-two from Grant County
have given the ultimate sacrifice.
A Veterans Memorial is being
planned to honor the over 600 men
and women from Grant County who
have served their country. The memorial will be placed near the new Prairie
Ridge Hospital in Elbow Lake. A special
thank you to the Prairie Ridge Hospital
and Health Services Board of Directors
for graciously allowing us to build the
memorial at this place of honor.
Engraved memorial bricks for individual veterans will be placed in two
large, raised, granite display fixtures.
Flags representing the five branches of
military service, plus one in honor of
MIAs, will back the displays. A large
American flag will fly proudly above.
Two more granite memorials will display the names of those killed in action.
There will be at least four granite benches for those who wish to sit and reflect.
If you would like to purchase a memorial brick, contact one of the Grant
County Veterans Memorial Service Organization (GCVMSO) directors. The
GCVMSO invites you to consider making a donation to help build the newly
designed memorial.

Grant County
Museum and
Veterans
Memorial Hall
That’s one tooth? Ten children were
raised in here? Grant County had 71
school districts? So that’s where we got
the names Tipsinah Mounds and Pomme
de Terre. These are just a few of the comments heard from those who have toured
the Grant County Museum.
The Grant County Historical Society
was organized in 1938 and incorporated in
1944. Since that time it has been collecting,
preserving and displaying artifacts and
archives relating to the history of Grant
County and its people, first in the Grant
County Courthouse, and later in its present building. The present building was
one of the first in the state to be built for
the sole purpose of becoming a museum.
Collections cover the periods from prehis-
toric times to the present. The years from
about 1880 to 1920 and the WW II years
are especially well represented.
Teeth and bones are among the remains of a prehistoric mammoth found
in a gravel pit on the Herman Beach of
glacial Lake Agassiz in 1928. See them on
display at the museum and get a sense of
how large a mammoth was.
Both Dakota (Sioux) and Ojibwe
(Chippewa) Indians once inhabited this
area. Both tribes are represented in the
Grant County Fair
collections of arrowheads, tools, beaded
clothing and an authentic birch bark
canoe.
The museum is home to the oldest and
crudest ox cart known to exist in Minnesota. The cart, dating to the 1820s or ‘30s,
is made entirely of wood including the
axle, with solid wood wheels. Fur traders
and settlers along the famous Red River
Trails from Pembina to St. Paul used these
handmade carts.
A model of Fort Pomme de Terre reminds us of the days when
stage travel was threatened by Indian attacks and the area was yet
to be permanently settled.
This area was predominantly settled by Norwegians and
Swedes and the collections include many items that reflect the
Scandinavian heritage of its pioneer people.
An addition to the museum in 1975 nearly doubled its display
space and it was quickly filled with agricultural and transportation
themed pieces. A threshing machine, reaper, horse-drawn buggies and sleighs, a 1909 REO and 1915 Model T can be seen here.
Another area of the museum represents the shops of main
street including a general store, dentist, barber, pharmacy, post
office, sheriff ’s office, music store, bank, newspaper, and hospital.
Many people have heard of the Kensington Runestone and
the controversy surrounding it. A unique item in our collection
is the Setterlund Runestone. The stone was found in 1949. The
runic inscription reads “1776 Four Maidens set Camp on this
Hill.” It was studied by experts throughout the country and was
at first thought to be genuine, but finally found to be a hoax. Victor Setterlund carved the stone as a prank. When asked why he
didn’t tell anyone it was a fake, he simply replied, “Nobody asked.”
Adjacent to the museum is a log house that was built southeast of Pelican Lake in 1865 by a Norwegian immigrant. His son
raised 10 children in this four-room house, which is furnished in
period furniture. Also on the museum grounds is the old District
#7 one-room schoolhouse.
The Veterans Memorial Hall addition opened in 2008. It was
built by the Elbow Lake American Legion Post to honor the men

and women of Grant County who have served our country in
times of war and peace. It features exhibits from the Civil War to
the Iraq-Afghanistan War.
The Grant County Historical Society has gone all out to
preserve the history of the county. Genealogists and historical
researchers will appreciate the vast archives collected including
hundreds of photos, county newspapers dating back to 1883,
maps, family files, indexes of obituaries, and marriages and much,
much more. Researchers may contact Museum Curator Patty
Benson through email: [email protected] .

ERDAHL
Erdahl is an unincorporated city in
Grant County. This homespun farming
community is located between Evansville and Elbow Lake on Minnesota
State Highway 79.
In the early days, Erdahl’s location
along transportation routes enabled it
to grow into a busy trade center. During
its boom years, it boasted one or more of
the following: train depot, grocery store,
elevator, telephone company, blacksmith,
implement dealer, hardware store, general store, creamery, bank, lumber yard,
sawmill, garages and filling stations,
restaurants, barbershop and pool hall,
butcher shop, churches, school and post
office. The town hall was a popular venue
for dances in its heyday.
Today life in Erdahl is more laid back
and relaxed.

The city of Wendell is located on
State Highway 55 along the eastern

fire department and first responders
hold an annual softball tournament with
teams coming from across Minnesota
and North Dakota. Other parks include
Wendell City Park, a play ground. The
