W
hen the Board of Directors of the Miami Symphony Orchestra and Maestro Manuel
Ochoa asked me to become his successor in 2006, I was confident of the wonderful
musical experiences I was going to live through with our fantastic musicians and wonderful
audience. Little did I know back then though, how hard it was going to be to raise the
necessary funding to support this continuous growth of a young symphony orchestra within
the troubled waters of South Florida!
Tonight, as I begin my 10th season as Music Director and Conductor of the Miami Symphony,
my deepest feelings of trust, love, and gratitude go out to all of our staff and musicians for
enduring the most difficult financial obstacles of any U.S. orchestra, and yet still being able
to deliver some of the most inspired performances ever heard at the Adrienne Arsht Center.
Like the symphony of Schubert you’ll hear tonight, our symphony is still unfinished, as we
are in the midst of a very tough journey. Unlike Schubert however, we are determined to
complete this masterpiece.
The opening of the 2015-2016 season tonight is a big challenge both artistically and
financially, but we are absolutely committed to honoring our past by working relentlessly
towards a better future. Moving to our new home in Wynwood, in the heart of Miami’s vibrant
artistic community, opens up a brand new chapter in our history, bringing a unique and
innovative musical experience to future generations of classical music lovers. This, together
with our newly appointed Classical-Crossover Director Rudy Perez, guarantees a new era for
symphonic music here in South Florida.
I would like to dedicate tonight’s world premiere performance of ECHOES, by our Composer-inResidence Tulio Cremisini, as a well-deserved homage to the inspiring sounds that have filled
the hearts of our wonderful musicians over the last 27 years. Our deepest gratitude goes out
to each and every one of them, for having made our world a better place than they found it.

lives, as a mystic message of hope.”

reflect our community, with composers that have a deep, personal connection to the musical voice and
cultural vibrancy of South Florida.
The Miami Symphony Orchestra deeply appreciates the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s

Conductor of The Miami Symphony Orchestra, he remains deeply involved in the musical
life of his native Venezuela and continues to guest conduct actively in Europe. A Steinway
Artist, he has made more than 40 CDs that range from a Brahms orchestral cycle to surveys

Costas Spiliadis
R
ecognized as one of the finest Mediterranean
seafood restaurants in the world, Estiatorio
Milos was founded in 1979 by acclaimed chef and
restaurateur, Costas Spiliadis.
Milos is celebrated for serving the freshest, most
pristine fish flown in daily from the Mediterranean,
and for sourcing the highest-quality ingredients.
Thanks to Mr. Spiliadis’ daily involvement, the
restaurants’ consistently impeccable service and
welcoming spirit have made Milos an unparalleled
Greek-inspired culinary destination since its
inception in Montreal, followed by New York (1997),
Athens (2004), Las Vegas (2010), Miami (2012) and
London (2015).
In addition to superior fish and seafood, Mr.
Spiliadis’ refined cuisine consists of just as carefully
selected vegetables, legumes, olive oil and fruits -- all elements that form the basis of
the Mediterranean diet -- complemented by an eclectic selection of premium wines that
showcase unique terroirs. The restaurant’s suppliers, with whom Mr. Spiliadis had forged
decades-long relationships, range from small, family owned fishing companies in the Greek
islands and the shores of Morocco, Tunisia and Portugal, to independent North American
fishermen in Pensacola, Florida, and the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia -- all dedicated to
delivering fish and seafood with a commitment to absolute freshness, exceptional quality,
and with sound environmental considerations.
Mr. Spiliadis first arrived to New York in 1969 from his native Patras, a port city near the
ancient Greek village of Olympia, in the Peloponnese. It was there that he discovered his
passion for home cooking from his mother. After studying sociology at New York University
and the University of Maryland, he made his way to Montreal to study at Concordia University
where, upon graduation, he became a social activist and co-founder of Radio Centreville,
Montreal’s first non-profit radio station. Issues of community and culture have always
captivated Mr. Spiliadis, playing major roles in his approach as a restaurateur.
In 1979 he opened Filoxenia, a lively boite à chansons in Montreal, dedicated to the beautiful
and haunting music and poetry of Greece. Many of Canada’s greatest musicians performed
on its stage. Mr. Spiliadis then opened Estiatorio Milos in the space upstairs from Filoxenia,
which soon established itself as one of the city’s most influential dining destinations,
introducing Montrealers to new tastes and culinary experiences. For this landmark Montreal
restaurant, Mr. Spiliadis drove twice a week to New York’s Fulton Street Fish Market to ensure
he was getting the world’s best catch. In 1997, when he opened Estiatorio Milos in Manhattan,
Mr. Spiliadis hired eight Greek fishermen on the island of Kythira to cast their lines into
the Mediterranean every night to provide the freshest red mullet and dorade for clients of
Estiatorio Milos in New York City.
With roots in music, community radio and cuisine, Mr. Spiliadis has become an ambassador of
culture. He views his restaurants both as exquisite dining destinations and cultural beacons,
lends his time to a number of charities, serves on the board of the Montreal Symphony
Orchestra, and has been a guiding spirit behind concert tours by legendary Greek composer
Mikis Theodorakis and other noted performers.
