Day 1: Thursday, June 23, 2016
Kansas City/Independence/Liberty
Depart this morning for Kansas City. Upon arrival we will drive to
Independence to visit the LDS visitors’ center and temple lot--the site
where the first temple was commanded to be built in this dispensation.
Following dinner we will travel to Liberty to visit the jail and visitors’ center.
It was here during the winter of 1838-39 that the Prophet Joseph Smith
was imprisoned. During his incarceration, he received Doctrine and
Covenants, Sections 121-123. Overnight at the Holiday Inn Express in

Day 2: Friday, June 24, 2016
Richmond/Far West/Adam-ondi-Ahman/Nauvoo
Following an early breakfast, we will drive along the beautiful banks of
the Missouri River to Richmond to see the Three Witnesses Monument.
We will then continue on to Far West to see the temple site and have a
picnic lunch. Our next stop is Adam-ondi-Ahman. Following dinner we will
continue our scenic drive to Nauvoo. Overnight at the Nauvoo Family Inn

Day 3: Saturday, June 25, 2016 Nauvoo
Today we will begin our tour of old Nauvoo. Among our stops will be the
Joseph Smith Homestead, Mansion House, gravesites of Joseph, Emma,
and Hyrum, and the Red Brick Store. Next we will visit the brickyard,
blacksmith shop, and the homes of Lucy Mack Smith, Heber C. Kimball,

and Wilford Woodfruff. Tonight we’ll enjoy a musical production at the
Cultural Hall performed by missionaries. Overnight at the Nauvoo Family Inn

Day 4: Sunday, June 26, 2016 Nauvoo
Following sacrament meeting and lunch we’ll visit the LDS visitors’ center
and walk through the statuary park dedicated to women. Next we will have
free time to visit historic Nauvoo including; the Riser Tin Shop, Scovil Bakery,
Browning Gun Shop, Times and Seasons Print Shop, and the Brigham
Young home to name a few. Following dinner, we will walk the Trail of Hope
and read excerpts from diaries of the Saints who joined the Mormon exodus
from Nauvoo in 1846. Overnight at the Nauvoo Family Inn & Suites. (B,L,D)

Day 5: Monday, June 27, 2016 Nauvoo/Carthage
We’ll begin our day with a morning temple session at the Nauvoo Temple.
(Attendance at the temple is optional and subject to the temple schedule.)
This afternoon we will visit the pioneer cemetery and then depart for
Carthage. Here we will tour the jail where the Prophet Joseph Smith and
his brother Hyrum were martyred. Next we will remember the day when
Joseph and Hyrum were killed in the Carthage jail as we gathered to honor
the martyrs during the 2016 Martyrdom Commemoration. Overnight at the
Nauvoo Family Inn & Suites. (B,L,D)
Day 6: Tuesday, June 28, 2016 Nauvoo
As we say our farewell to Nauvoo, we continue on to Mark Twain’s Hannibal
on the Mississippi River where we’ll take a luncheon cruise on a riverboat.
Following lunch, we’ll drive to St. Louis for our evening flight home. (B,L)
About Craig Ostler:
Craig James Ostler has been a religious educator
for more than 15 years with seminaries and
institutes and the last twenty-plus years as a
professor at Brigham Young University. He, his wife,
Sandy, and family have lived in Jerusalem, while
he served on the faculty of the BYU Jerusalem
Center for Near Eastern Studies in 1998 and again
in 2008. As well as a scholar of the scriptures, he is
also an author of many articles and books. He has
taugh BYU Continuing Education classes for adults
and BYU Education Week. He has served as a
bishop and a High Counselor. He and his wife have
7 children and eight grandchildren and counting
He officially joined the BYU Religious Education
Faculty in 1995 after completing a PhD. in Family Studies. Previously he taught
for 15 years in the Church Education System. Dr. Ostler is currently the Teaching
Fellow for Religious Education. He served a mission to Bogota, Colombia and
soon afterward married Sandy Owen of Portland, Oregon. They are the parents
of seven children and reside in Pleasant Grove, Utah.
