SFJAZZ COLLECTIVE tribute to saxophonist joe henderson
There is no band out there like the SFJAZZ ­Collective
…. A true collective, a meeting of brilliant jazz minds, a
concert experience that affirms this uniquely ­American
art form. Since the Collective made its debut in 2004,
they have created a unique approach that looks back to
the masters and forward to a new standard of ­virtuosity
and ensemble playing. Now entering its 11th season,
the group will pay tribute to ­legendary ­saxophonist
and composer Joe Henderson, with a ­repertoire that
spans Henderson’s illustrious career from the early Blue
Note years to the Milestone Records period through
his ­resurgence on Verve records in the 1990’s. The
­Collective has its home base at the internationally
­acclaimed ­SFJAZZ Center, which houses a ­performance
and education space named for Henderson – the Joe
Henderson Lab. The SFJAZZ Collective was named
Small Group Ensemble of the Year by the Jazz ­Journalists
Association in 2009 and was nominated for the same
honor again in 2012.
