Congratulations!: Carol Murch took the Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) national certification exam and now has her CNE.
Advisory Board Breakfast: The wild winds of February 29 blew in the College’s technical program advisory boards. The annual
breakfast provided a “thank-you” to all those from the business and education communities who serve on a board and allowed for
board member comments and concerns. Many thanks to the faculty and staff who hosted the event.
Future50: What will HCC be like and do in 50 years? The questions we will review are:
•On what areas of emphasis should Henderson Community College focus?
•What 3-7 words should best describe the college (single words or phrases)?
•What kinds of programs should the college pursue or strengthen?
•What should the campuses look like in terms of facilities, classrooms, locations, etc.?

In “An Ounce of Prevention: Improving College Readiness as a Strategy Toward College Completion,” Alison Douglas, Professor
of English, and Director of Alliance for College Readiness, and Julie Schaid, Associate Dean, College Readiness and School Partnerships, describe a partnership forged to make students college ready before they enroll in their first courses on campus. The large
majority of the Summer Bridge program completers place into higher-level courses than their entry test scores recommended,
many avoiding developmental courses altogether and enrolling in college-level courses for which they are now prepared. Access

Sharing Teaching
The Power of Mindful Teaching is an interesting article that focuses on the work of Dr. Ellen J. Langer and her work
on the “power of the mind’s assumptions over the realities we experience” and how that affects teaching and
learning. Here is a quote from the article, written by James Rhem:
“Her book on mindful learning had debunked or at least seriously brought into question the validity of a number of
myths about learning. For example, that
•the basics must be learned so well that they become second nature
•paying attention means staying focused on one thing at a time
•delaying gratification is important
•rote memorization is necessary in education
•forgetting is a problem
•intelligence is knowing “what’s out there,” and especially that
•there are right and wrong answers.”

Films on Demand – Embed a video into a Blackboard course
As you may know, the library subscribes to the Films on Demand database which is a web-based digital
video delivery platform. This database contains educational videos encompassing a broad range of topics including Health & Medicine, Art & Architecture, and Business & Economics. These high-quality videos are great tools to employ in the classroom or to
assign to students to watch on their own. You can now embed Films on Demand videos straight into your Blackboard courses.
Embedding the videos into your course
ensures that each student will access the correct video or video segment.
The embedding process is very easy and only takes a few minutes to complete. Please consult the library’s tutorial here for stepby-step instructions on the embedding process. Scarface

One of the best gangster films made during “Scarface” Al Capone’s heyday, Scarface is a morality tale thinly veiled as “fiction.” Paul Muni plays a small time crook working his way to fame
and fortune through violence and debauchery. But at what cost? (1932, 93 minutes; directed
by Howard Hawks; starring Paul Muni, George Raft, and Boris Karloff.)

Birth of a Nation
Feb. 16
This is the movie that defined film-making and established cinematography
as an art form. While the story line (a southerner builds the KKK in the post
-Civil War south to protect against the greed and lechery of northerners
and ex-slaves) has always been controversial, this film is still a trailblazer in
the development of cinema.
The discussion following this film will discuss both artistic and social
concerns, and is offered in conjunction with HCC’s Diversity Week activities.
(1915, 190 minutes; directed by D. W. Griffith; starring Lillian Gish and Henry B. Walthall.)

lovers to do? Perhaps the best “screwball comedy” ever, it’s the first film to ever receive
the “Grand Slam” of the five top Oscars: Best Actor, Actress, Director, Picture, and Screenplay. (1934, 105 minutes; directed by Frank Capra; starring Clark Gable, Claudette Colbert,

Double Indemnity

Dark and surprising, Double Indemnity always rates among
the top “film noir” movies. MacMurray, an insurance agent, falls
in love with the beautiful Barbara Stanwyk who wants to get rid of
her inconvenient husband—but will MacMurray help her become a widow?
Superb acting and pacing earned Double Indemnity seven Oscar nominations.
(1944, 107 minutes; directed by Billy Wilder; starring Barbara Stanwyk,

Strangers on a Train
April 5
Perhaps the first “murder swap” movie, this film follows the plotting of two strangers who meet on a train where they plan the
murders of inconvenient family members. As always with Hitchock, suspense and plot twists are abundant. (1951, 101 minutes;
directed by Alfred Hitchcock; starring Robert Walker, Farley Gardner, and Marion Lorne.) Discussion led by Katie Griffis.

Literary Magazine
is calling for entries for its 2012 edition!
The Magazine invites HCC faculty and staff to submit their original writing and artwork
for publication.
You may submit up to five poems, five haiku, three short fiction stories, and three non-fiction
essays. Artwork is accepted up to five submissions per artist.
How to submit:
E-Mail your entries as an attachment to [email protected]. In the email message, provide your
name, address, and phone number. For each work, include its title and category
(poetry, haiku, fiction, non-fiction, or art).
Prizes are awarded in all categories (poetry, haiku, fiction, non-fiction, and art):
$75 first prize; $50 second prize; $25 third prize.
The deadline for submission is September 14, 2012.
