Last repaired in the 1980s, The Witham is about to undergo conservation, restoration and refurbishment. At present, bookings can only be taken for events in summer 2013 and later. It was originally opened in 1926 as a reading room for Etal village. In September 2005 the hall was awarded grants for refurbishment to bring the village hall into the 21st century and to provide a focus for the community. Today the hall offers first class facilities. In addition a long-lost plan by Capability Brown has recently been implemented creating a lake and fully accessibly pathway with associated tree planting.
