A Florida Clean Marina
MARINA EXPERIENCE
“
“
Congratulations are in order for our beautiful Longboat Key Club Moorings!
Our 291 slip marina has been recognized as a Florida Clean Marina for the 13th consecutive year.
It is one of only 279 marinas in the State of Florida to carry this highly respected designation.
Awarded by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), the Florida Clean Marina
designation is given to select marinas throughout the state that participate in a voluntary and
proactive program that requires marina facilities to adhere to guidelines and best practices that
support environmental stewardship.
This accolade acknowledges that a marina has implemented a set of environmental measures
designed to protect Florida’s waterways, including maintaining sensitive habitat, waste management,
storm water control, spill prevention and emergency preparedness.
Florida has over 1,350 miles of coastline, 50,000 miles of inland and coastal rivers and streams,
over 700 freshwater springs and countless lakes. Floridians depend on water more than any other
natural resource, and it is essential to the success of the state’s $56 billion tourism industry, its $14
billion marine industry and $6.6 billion fishing industry.
As a major activity that contributes so much to Florida’s economy, boating and beautiful waterways
are a way of life to Floridians and for those that choose to spend their vacation and leisure dollars
in our destinations. It is important to support these state-wide initiatives and to encourage other
boating enthusiasts to make the extra effort to support businesses that embrace this critical and
forward thinking philosophy.
The Club’s commitment to quality and excellence through the judicial business practices we have put in place for over
a decade showcase the fact we take stewardship of our island resources very seriously. We work hard to maintain the
integrity of our unique wildlife areas and waterways.
The marina is a very special and beautiful addition to the amenities we offer at the Club, and it is yet another area in
which our initiatives maintain a balance between good business practices and environmental sensitivities.
Located at the Harbourside area of our property, Longboat Key Club Moorings is well known for its luxurious
exclusivity, pristine setting, seabird rookeries and marine life. The marina, which is spread over 37 acres, can
accommodate yachts up to 150 feet. It is located at ICW MM 79.5 by sea or at 2630 Harbourside Drive, Longboat
Key, by land.
The marina has been recognized by the Sarasota Herald Tribune as a finalist in its “Best Marina” category and
by Power and Motoryacht magazine as one of the “Top 25 Marinas in North America.” - Sandra Rios, Director of
Marketing and Communications

As we look forward to another exciting season at the Marina,
we are pleased to share some of the recent awards we have
received including being named one of the “Top 25 Marinas
in North America”, by Power & Motoryacht Magazine as well
as achieving our “Florida Clean Marina” designation for the
13th consecutive year. These accolades hold us to the highest
protocols of service and hospitality and sound stewardship of
the waters that make our area the special destination that it is.
Many of our boaters are visiting us for the first time and
we are receiving high marks for our spectacular setting and
excellent service. Many of those guests have already booked
for next year or decided to stay forever! We hope you have
the chance to explore everything the Gulf coast of Florida
has to offer–clear aqua waters, great fishing, small towns and
points of interest that dot the coastline. We have made it easier
than ever to book a slip. Simply access our website from your
mobile device, www.LongboatKeyMarina.com<http://www.
LongboatKeyMarina.com>, and book your slip reservation
online. You can select your arrival and departure dates and
even the slip of your preference. Once you hit “send” you will
receive a confirmation email with all the information you need
right at your fingertips.
We are the largest Resort Marina on the West Coast of
Florida and offer more on-site amenities and services than
any other marina in the area. These include on-site laundry
facilities, dockside dining at Portofino, a fully stocked Ship’s
Store, swimming pool and tennis courts and access to resort
amenities such as The Spa, The Fitness Center and our pristine
white-sand beach.
Our service department is available seven days a week to keep
your vessel in top condition. For those boaters who have
young ones onboard, our Camp Loggerhead day-camp will
provide quality care, entertainment, arts & crafts and outdoor
activities for children ages 5 through 12. Your little ones will
enjoy their time and make new friends while you relax and
enjoy a day on the boat or at the beach.
The Resort has also earned top accolades this year in Condé
Nast’s “Top 30 Florida Hotels, Gulf Coast” list and Tennis Resorts
Online “Top 25 Gold Medal Resorts, Worldwide. Our resort
has maintained its AAA Four-Diamond award for the 32nd
consecutive year, one of only six in the State of Florida to
achieve this award.

HISTORICAL EXPLANATION OF THE LATIN GENITIVE
Most constellations visible from the northern hemisphere
originated from the Greeks, as recorded by Ptolemy in his
first century book, The Almagest. Coma Berenices and Crux
were added around 1603 and Plancius added Camelopardalis
and Monoceros in 1613. In 1690, Hevelius added Lacerta, Leo
Minor, Lynx, Scutum, Sextans and Vulpecula. At the very end of
the 1600’s, the Dutchmen, Pieter Dirkszoon and Frederick de
Houtman created 12 southern hemisphere constellations, namely:
Apus, Chamaeleon, Dorado, Grus, Hydrus, Indus, Musca, Pavo,
Phoenix, Triangulum Australe, Tucana and Volans. In 1756, the
Frenchman Nicolas Louis de Lacaille added the last 14 of
the southen hemisphere constellations, namely: Antlia, Caelum,
Circinus, Fornax, Horologium, Mensa, Microscopium, Norma,
Octans, Pictor, Pyxis, Reticulum, Sculptor and Telescopium. He
also split the extremely large constellation, Argo Navis (Ship
Argo, sailed by Jason and the Argonauts), into Vela, Puppis and
Carina.
Serpens, the Snake, is the only constellation split between two
parts of the sky. The Snake is being held by Ophiuchus and lies
across his body. The tail, known as Serpens CAUDA is located
16
MARINA EXPERIENCE
to the east or left of Ophiuchus and the head, known as Serpens
CAPUT, is located to the west or right of Ophiuchus. Technically,
Ophiuchus is the 13 constellation of the zodiac because part of
its boundary (and foot) crosses the ecliptic. Crux occupies the
least area in the sky and Hydra the most area.
Genitive refers to a grammatical case resulting in a spelling
variation of a word that indicates or implies a relationship of
possession. Genitives are not used in modern English. Where
they exist, they are a holdover from Latin and other languages.
Genitives of the constellations are still used today in conjunction
with the Bayer letters, Flamsteed numbers or similar
designation to “name” stars. For example, the “alpha” star
in Orion, as asigned by Bayer, but best known as Betelgeuse,
could also be referred to as alpha Orionis, where Orionis is the
genitive form of Orion, indicating possession of the alpha star.
Betelgeuse can also be indicated as 58 Orionis when referring
to it by its Flamsteed number. Most of us have heard of alpha
Centauri, one of the closest stars to us. This is its gentitive name
using its Bayer letter designation. This star is also commonly
called by its name, Rigel Kentaurus. - Courtesy, Ken Press.com

Every industry is finding new ways to use
technology to their advantage, and our

of its new slip reservations platform. Being
one of the first in the marine industry to
introduce this option has created a lot of
excitement and positive feedback from
the staff as well as the boaters who can
now book a slip as easily as reserving a

for the boating public,” said Dennis Matthews,
Director of Marina Operations. “With 291 slips
and a full array of amenities, we are in the top
echelon of marinas in North America. With

has perfected keeps occupancy high
and demand in line with consumer
trends. Marina professionals can
now use the same strategies to keep
slips full and boating customers
happy with the ability to make
reservations quickly and easily.
Access the Marina’s website from
a mobile device, tablet, laptop or
