Canterbury Cathedral has a tradition of visitor

medieval pilgrimages. Founded in 597AD, Mother
Church of the Anglican Communion, it houses a
Romanesque crypt, 12th century quire and some

windows in the country. In 1170 Thomas Becket

Reputedly England’s finest example of a motte and
bailey castle with a splendid 13th century gatehouse,
Tonbridge Castle is set in landscaped gardens
overlooking the River Medway. The site is well
interpreted and there are audio tours of the gatehouse,
bringing to life the story of kings and archbishops,
tyrants and heroes, murderers and mercenaries.
Open Mon-Sat 9am-5pm, Suns & BH 10.30am-4.30pm,
closed over Christmas & New Year. Last tours leave one
hour before closing.

countryside from Royal Tunbridge Wells, via
High Rocks and Groombridge to Eridge, on the
Spa Valley Railway.
Steam Trains operate most weekends April to
October, plus Bank Holidays, and some weekdays
during May to September. Joint tickets available
with Groombridge Place. Regular special events
including a “Day out with Thomas”. Just off A26,
