The Vapor Trail March 2013
The Vapor Trail March 2013 Vapor Trail Vettes, P.O. Box 5241, Santa Maria, CA 93456 Presidents Message Inside this Issue Thank you Chuck Jennings for organizing the Vapor Trail Vettes outing on March 30th, the photo set up and great photos you took. John and Debbie Mahoney were also big players in this event from suggesting the outing to taking photos as well. We all had a great time and enjoyed the company of our fellow members. I was pleasantly surprised that so many of you got up that early on a Saturday morning and brought your cars out to participate. Presidents Message As a reminder, the Vapor Trail Vettes monthly general meeting will take place on April 11th instead of the first Thursday of the month due to the West Coast Regional Convention in Las Vegas. A lot of action items were assigned at the last meeting so expect a good discussion on the status and decisions to be made at the next meeting. The date for our “Annual Blast” at the Santa Maria Inn has changed due to a large wedding taking place on our original date of September 6-7th. We will be moving the date to September 13-14th in order to retain the parking lot and cabana we have used for the last few years. The rooms have increased by $5.00 per night for participants. We will be using a different suite for Hospitality Night which is more open than the room we have used in the past. I am still working with the hotel’s director of sales to complete all the details. More to come! We are fast approaching our first Autocross of 2013 on April 20th. We are anticipating a good turnout and hope to have all the improvements to our equipment complete along with the new logos on the trailer by then. Until next month...Save the Wave! Those present were Gale Haugen, Hector Paz, Chuck Jennings, John and Debbie Mahoney, Gerry White, Doug and Debbie Chase, Larry and Pamela Wright, Clay Beck and Barry Fitzjerrall. John: Received a quote from Roadtech.com of $895 for 100 safety cones (18”, soft rubber, no black bottom, all one-piece foot on bottom). The price reflects a $70 discount, includes 3-4 letters for club ID and shipping. Introduction of New Member Gale introduced our new member, Barry Fitzjerrall. Welcome, Barry! Approval of Minutes A motion was made by Chuck Jennings, seconded by Debbie Mahoney and carried to approve the February 7, 2013 meeting minutes. Treasurer’s Report Hector passed out copies of the 2013 Operating Budget and reviewed the income and expenses for January and February. There will not be income until our first autocross event. Expenses incurred were for budgeted items and costs for building the shelving inside the trailer came in $312.76 under budget. Chuck Jennings reported he ordered additional brochures for $175. NCCC Governor’s Report Action Item: Barry will check other vendors for prices. Gale asked if we should buy a smaller folding table for the timer. There was discussion as to if there is any type of table that would stabilize the timer and keep the wind from blowing it over. No resolution was reached on this issue. Gale said the plugs are worn out on the 50-foot cords and asked if we anyone knew if we could replace the plugs. Having no electricians in the group left the question unanswered. Chuck Jennings suggested getting a price on wireless sensors for our timer, thus eliminating the cords. Action item: Gale will check prices for wireless sensors for our existing timer. Gale and Hector discussed the need for a storage container for non-autocross VTV items. They are not kept in the trailer and are stored in the shop at their business. John Mahoney discussed the Las Vegas West Coast & Northwest Regional Convention on April 4-7. He said you can register late but they will charge you an extra fee. Basically it’s the 5th and 6th. The 5th is the high speed and autocross at Spring Mountain. The 6th is the car show and Rallye. He’s had questions locally this week about the autocross events. Gale asked when to open registration for the first autocross. John said the third week in March or the first week of April. Action item: Barry said he goes to Estate sales and finds inexpensive metal storage sheds and he will try to find something. John said he checks Craigslist every day and will add that to his search. General Business Debbie Mahoney suggested we buy a canopy with our VTV logo on it. The lowest prices for those are usually by vendors at large car club events. 2013 Wish List Items Gale asked members to develop a wish list of things we need for autocross. There is a need to have wheels under the generator. Chuck Jennings said we could buy inexpensive wheels at Harbor Freight. Action item: Barry will build a wooden furniture dolly for the generator. 2 March Meeting Minutes—Cont’d March Meeting Minutes—Cont’d by Debbie Chase by Debbie Chase Action item: All club members BOLO “be on the lookout” for a great deal on a canopy when you go to car club events. If it’s a great price, buy it for the club and you’ll be reimbursed. Barry asked what he has to do to qualify to autocross. John will send him information and answer any questions he has. Larry Wright asked if the club would donate again this year to “Care Net,” a group who assists unwed teen mothers. A motion was made by Chuck Jennings, seconded by John Mahoney and carried to approve the donation. Gale reported she received a call from the Santa Maria Chamber of Commerce. When we have our Annual Blast, they will provide us with a welcome banner, welcome letters from the mayor, blank nametags, holders and announcements to the media. Action item: Gale will contact the Santa Maria Inn to reserve dates for our annual event. b. March Social Event John suggested we meet at the Pismo Derelicts Car Meet, Ross Shopping Center, corner of Oak Park Drive and James Way in the OSH parking lot on Saturday, March 30 at 7:30 am. Chuck Jennings will find a scenic place for us to drive to and take photos of our cars. He will select a restaurant and we can go to brunch/lunch before we head home. Action item: Chuck Jennings will scout out scenic location and a restaurant for March social event. Action Item Status The shelving for the trailer is done. Thank you to everyone who helped. The trailer logos for Home Motors and Premier Auto Body were ordered today. Around The Table Gerry passed out fliers for the Lompoc Police & Special Olympics Annual Car Show in August. Clay is going to the Las Vegas West Coast & Northwest Regional Convention in April. Gale and Hector as well as John and Debbie are going. Chuck Jennings said the San Luis Obispo Concours is June 7 and they are trying to get one Corvette from each year of production. We can contact “Carlos.” Sunshine Lady – Debbie Chase 50/50 Drawing - $20 won by John Name Tag Drawing - $20 won by Debbie Chase Door Prize winner was John The meeting was adjourned at 8:15. The next meeting will be April 11th at Home Motors in Santa Maria. Tech Corner by Gale Haugen I recently noticed a annoying crackling and popping noise from my removable targa top roof panel? According to a reader that submitted a letter to VETTE Magazine there may be a simple solution. He purchased a tube of Super Lube with PTFE 1 (Pn 12371287 GR.8.800) from his Chevrolet dealer. After putting a light coating of lube on the contact points, rear pins and a light coat on the weather stripping he hasn’t heard a noise since. According to the Corvette Forum there is also an E-Clip mod that should work. After reading about the two different solutions the “Super Lube” fix seemed to be the best and the easiest way to fix the problem. 3 West Coast Regional Convention-April 4-7, 2013 The first West Coast Regional Convention will take place at the Silverton Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas the first weekend of April. So far there are 340 registered participants. The weekend begins Thursday with registration check-in at the Welcome party in the pool area and car techs from 11-4pm in front of the parking structure. Friday at 7:15am a rallye will start for drivers who entered in the Low Speed autocross. The day will consist of track day events of time trials, runs, lunch and Kumho tire give-away. Saturday begins with a car show at 8:0012:00pm followed by afternoon rallyes beginning at 1:00pm. Sunday morning is the awards breakfast at the Hotel’s Buffet beginning at 8:30am. Seven Vapor Trail Vettes members plan on attending this event along with two guests. Joan and Charlie Perry will be leaving on Wednesday with members Clay Beck, Debbie and John Mahoney, Gale and guest Debbie Ware and Hector and guest Mark Ware will be leaving from Hectors shop in Santa Maria at 7:00am. If you decide to attend this event and would like to caravan over please call Gale or Hector prior to Thursday’s departure time. VTV Members Gather for a Morning of Fun! by John Mahoney Great VTV event Saturday March 30th, starting with all the cars in the Pismo Derelicts parking lot. There were more Vettes there then I have ever seen. The VTV group of Corvettes parked together with the VTV flags displayed well. I made the mistake of not getting a photo. Maybe the Pismo Derelicts photographer will have a group photo? At 9AM sharp we proceeded to get in our cars and head out. Chuck left for Avila Beach a little before the rest of us so he could scout out the best location for our group photo. When we arrived in Avila Chuck surprised us with a beautiful location along the coast and he began lining up the Vettes with Bee Jay and Gerry's help. The cars that were driving by enjoyed looking over at our cars. After all cars were in place and owners were by their respective rides the photos began. I have previewed numerous shots and there were a lot of really good ones. This included the shots Chuck took and Bee Jay's panoramic shot from his Iphone that was really good. After the photo shoot we followed Chuck into downtown Avila and met at the Custom House Restaurant. Everyone seemed to have a wonderful breakfast and there were numerous compliments by all on Chuck's choice for the photo location and the excellent selection for the restaurant. The restaurant had our table ready when we got there and our waitress treated us well. There was nothing but praise for the whole event. Chuck finished off the morning with a quick photo of those that were still present in front of the Custom House before everyone went their various directions to head home to catch up on their chores. See you soon and save the wave. See the Photo Gallery page for a sample of photos and the Vapor Trail Vettes Website for additional photos. Thy Corvette Commandments courtesy of Cliff Erickson 4 Concours de donut Concours de donut—Cont’d Orcutt's weekly car enthusiast gathering is a celebration of automobiles of all makes and models BY FRANK GONZALES You can find the event online as the Orcutt Donut Run. Cars and coffee. The pairing has been sweeping the nation, the world, and the Internet over the last few years. The idea is simple: Step one is to find a parking lot that goes unused over the weekend and whose owners are open to impromptu gatherings on their property. Step two is to get the word out about the meeting to all gearheads, petrolheads, or whatever people who like cars are called in your area. Step three is to gather said people and their cars and then to turbocharge them with coffee, donuts, bagels, racing fuel, and possibly a giant breakfast burrito. If all goes well, the result is an informal car show where people passionate about their choice of transportation and locals looking for a spectacle have a great time Fast cars, sweet donuts, chatting and getting strong coffee, and to know each other and their dreams of knowledgeable car guys storming Laguna Se- blend for a robust mix ca or the Autobahn. on a Sunday morning It’s also one of the few car shows where Photo by FRANK GONZALES it’s possible to see a Porsche 911 Carrera, a hotrod, a low-rider, and a 1,000-horsepower Honda Civic peacefully coexisting in the same place. One of the car-and-coffee movement’s largest and most famous meetings takes place every Saturday in Irvine, while the Central Coast’s offerings used to be limited to Santa Barbara and Pismo Beach. That was until about two years ago, when John Mahoney and a group of likeminded individuals decided to initiate an event of their own in Orcutt. Instead of calling it Cars and Coffee they have chosen Orcutt Derelicts as the meeting name, given that many of the cars are vintage. Just as with the meetings taking place around the nation, the crowd on a recent Sunday Donut Run was full of car nuts and an assortment of their amazing rides. Of note was an immaculate 1969 C3 Corvette, a Chevrolet Bel Air as tidy as a Bel Air mansion’s garden, and the prettiest mutt of the litter: a Porvette. The latter is a 1966 Porsche 911 slantnose with a 355 Corvette V8 stuffed in the back in place of the normal Porsche inline-6 cylinder engine. While that engine makes the rearward bias of the car’s weight even more pronounced, its acceleration must be mind-bending. The icing on the cake donut is the end of the show, when all of the cars power up and leave the lot in a thunderous symphony or cacophony, depending on the octane rating of your blood. In Irvine, the police have strategically placed themselves to discourage burnout exits for the crowds of youth making YouTube videos with their iPhones, but this isn’t yet a problem in Orcutt. Despite this, Orcutt Derelicts takes place every Sunday from the thunder coming 8:30 to 11 a.m. in front from one Camaro of the Golden Donut in SS in attendance Orcutt’s Oak Knolls could have come shopping center at from Thor himself. 4850F S. Bradley Road. And loud noises The event is open to all aren’t the only thing types of car enthusiasts that might keep and their cars. For more someone away from information, go to their the event. There’s Facebook group: Orcutt also the start time. Derelicts. The Donut Run starts around 8:30 a.m. and only goes until 11 a.m. at the latest—and this is on the weekend, remember—but Mahoney thinks that the timeframe is also an advantage. Continued on page 6. 5 Concours de donut—Cont’d Club Members Business Cards “The thing that people like about coming here early in the morning is that they can come here, they can talk cars, and then they’re not stuck here all day long like you are at a car show,” he said. As much as any enthusiast would like to live for cars, there are other priorities in life, and Mahoney’s thinking makes sense. Another problem the Donut Run has had is competition with other events like theirs, ironically due to the success of the idea. “We used to do [the Derelicts] on Saturdays, but we were at the same time as [the] Pismo [show], which is a real big one,” he said. “We moved it to Sunday mornings so that people could come either before church or after church, and that’s why we started a little later.” In spite or because of the growth of similar events, the Derelicts continue to grow in popularity, with Mahoney reckoning that they’ve had as many as 35 cars show up on one Sunday. “We’re still trying to get it bigger,” he said. Mahoney stressed that any car event enthusiasts can enjoy that promotes their passion for all things automotive responsibly is a good one. And the Golden Donut is also a fan. “[The event] helps the business, and [the owner] expects us every Sunday, so that’s a good thing,” Mahoney said. Having access to a donut shop onsite is another good reason to come out, since the Golden Donut serves up a huge assortment of extremely tasty treats. It’s the sort of old-fashioned donut shop that some of the cars in attendance have frequented for more than half a century. With events like this and a little luck, those cars will continue to frequent donut shops for another half century. Intern Frank Gonzales lives on the road.
