We are delighted to introduce you to some
of our newest Executive Governors. First
of all thank you to Rick Callis who was our

our Tulsa National Event, October 2009.
Rick will continue to be active in Who’s Who
as he maintains his two homes.
Kathleen Coan and Hal Cooper have taken over the duties in our Tulsa, OK Chapter. They have also attended our
King Ranch Event, help host Tulsa, OK and were in Los Angeles, CA. They look forward to going to as many National
Events as they can and meeting new friends in Who’s Who.
Welcome!
Hal Cooper
Kathleen Coan
Co-Executive Governors
Tulsa, OK Chapter
Kathleen was born, raised, and educated up north in Wisconsin. She entered the United Way
field in the early 70’s in Stevens Point, WI. Then on to
Madison, WI, Chicago,IL, San Francisco, arriving in
Tulsa, in 1984. Her family consists of two sons, a daughter, and two granddaughters in Wisconsin and a daughter
and two more granddaughters in Oklahoma. Since her
retirement two years ago, Kathleen has remained active in all her community interests: Ballet board, Rotary,
and of course, Who’s Who! She is enjoying quality time
at her lake home and improving her golf game is her top
2010 priority. She loves to entertain, all kinds and venues of music, and of course, the Green Bay Packers.
(“She is also a gourmet cook” Suzanne)
Hal was born and raised in Tulsa, attended public schools
and then to college at Southern Methodist University in

Vantage Companies (Dallas & Houston), Circle K convenience stores (Phoenix), Costco (San Diego) as well
as Dallas law firms. He returned to Tulsa in 2001 and is
both an active real estate Broker and General Counsel to a large local real estate firm. Hal has one

Vol 40 Issue 4
Thank you to John Lauziere for keeping our San Diego Chapter alive untill we found our new Executive Governors. John
will continue as our SW Regional Governor! John, along with
Molly Seamons, helped a lot in Los Angleles.
Introducing Carol DeBaca:
Carol has been a member of Who’s Who San
Diego for 8 years and assisted John Lauziere
as Lt. Governor of this Chapter for the last 20
months. After many years as a senior
administrative manager for the State of
California, Carol retired and began working as
a managerial consultant and happily works a
schedule that allows fun and travel, especially
to visit her son who is a professor at a college outside of
Chicago.
Introducing Charlotte Perry:
Charlotte retired as an elementary school
library media teacher. Adventure called over
the years, and she also signed on with Army
Special Services as a librarian in Kaiserslautern,
Germany. Charlotte is very active in The Delta
Kappa Gamma Society International, an
organization for “Key” women educators. She
is also involved with Club Altura, Light One
Little Candle Foundation at the Moores Cancer
Center, among many others. Charlotte loves travel, reading,
shopping, and her two cats.
They both look forward to having great parties in San Diego
and travelng with Who’s Who.
We are merging our Silicon Valley and San Rafael/Marin
Chapters into one. Wendy Babb and Joan Williamson who
are our current Co-Executive Governors in our Silicon Valley
Chapter have taken over the San Francisco area and will start
having activies in San Francisco. Lou Broderick will be assising them as they plan activies in the Bay area.
Lou Broderick has been Executive Governor in San Rafael/
Marin for many years and has decided to take a step back. As
many of you know, Lou can give a great party - I have been to
several and they were outstanding. Lou was in Los Angeles
and will continue to be active in our club. Thank you Lou for
your many years with us!
C. Richard Hughes has bent over backwards to put together
an outstanding adventure for us this June in the San Juan Islands and on his Island of Orcas. We will have as much information as we can in our newsletter and a lot more on our web
site. Hope to see you soon!

San Juan Islands
"In the lower reaches of Puget Sound, looking out through the Strait of Juan de Fuca, toward the Olympic Mountains and
lands of romance on the chief trade routes of the world's future commerce, lies a land unique and apart from anything else
in the Western Hemisphere - the San Juan Islands. Unique in charm and beauty, in easy, agreeable living conditions, in
healthfulness; unique in the fact that it is an entire county of sea and land, of islands and inlets, 172 in number; varying in
size from 58 square miles to the area of a city lot. Of all the islands, Orcas Island is the most picturesque . . . it is a
wonderful place in which to forget one's troubles and worries and get back to Nature in her happiest moods; a delightful
place in which to regain health - physical, mental and spiritual."
-Robert Moran, from the 1932 Rosario Prospectus "Rosario: An Estate in the Pacific Northwest"
The 1846 Oregon Treaty forced by President Polk established the 49th parallel as the boundary between Canada and the
U.S., except in the San Juan archipelago. While both sides agreed that all of Vancouver Island would remain British, the
treaty wording was left vague enough as to put the boundary between modern-day Gulf Islands and San Juan Islands in
dispute. Conflicts over this border led to the Pig War in 1859. Skirmishes continued until the boundary issue was eventually
placed in the hands of Kaiser Wilhelm I of Germany for arbitration. The border was finally established in 1872.
San Juan Islands today
Today, the San Juan Islands are an important tourist destination, with sea kayaking and orca whale-watching by boat or air
tours, two of the primary attractions. Part of the charm that attracts tourists and residents to the San Juan Islands is that
each island seems to have a character of its own, both in terms of geography and of the lifestyle of the people who live
there. The majority of the San Juan Islands are quite hilly, the tallest mountain being Mount Constitution at almost exactly a
half-mile (800 m) elevation (Orcas Island), with some flat areas and valleys, often quite fertile, in between. The coastlines
are a mixed bag of sandy and rocky beaches, shallow and deep harbors, placid and reef-studded bays. Gnarled, ochrecolored madrona trees (Arbutus) grace much of the shorelines while evergreen fir and pine forests cover large inland areas.
Orcas Island
Pick your pleasure on Orcas Island. It’s a magical mix of arts and culture, lush forests, placid lakes and endless outdoor
possibilities. Charming villages dot the island as centers of culture, art and cuisine. Relax and enjoy the island’s quality
sampling of restaurants, boutiques, art galleries and museums.
For a dose of the great outdoors, hop aboard a whale watching and wildlife tour. Rent a kayak and see the island paddling
along its shores, or jump on a bike and cruise the countryside. Hike the rugged old growth trails of the 5,000-acre Moran
State Park to see the expansive marine vistas from the summit of Mount Constitution. On your way, watch for soaring bald
eagles, wild deer, fox, rabbits or more than 250 species of birds that can be seen here throughout the year. Taking in the
sunset over Puget Sound can make truly a spectacular experience.

Now a few words from C. Richard Hughes!
Welcome to my dream Island!
I first encountered Orcas Island at a very young age. In 1942 six families bought water front property on Orcas.
The property my family received had a circa 1880’s fish trapper’s shack in poor repair. We used cardboard
boxes instead of sheet rock and covered that with calcimine. I dug a hole for a very fancy two seated outhouse.
Eventually our living floor collapsed from the weight of our Franklin stove - so much for our shack.
After I married each summer we would drive our motor home from the mid-west and stay on our property
overlooking the water.
Upon retiring in 1994 we purchased my current home which is perched at 1,000-foot level of Buck Mountain.
The home is 4,000 square feet with 6,000 square feet of lanai on three levels and has a commanding view of the
surrounding San Juan Islands and the Gulf Islands of Canada. On a clear day, your view starts with Vancouver,
BC to the North and continues to the Olympic Mountains to the South.
Come join us as I am look forward to sharing my Island and home with each and every one of you.
