Restoration of Mayflower II - Sixty years ago Mayflower II was constructed at Upham
shipyard in Brixham, England. Guest speaker Whit Perry described the ongoing extensive
restoration effort, with the goal of completion by 2020, the 400th anniversary of the arrival
of the Pilgrims in America. After moving the ship to Mystic Seaport, the task began with
the removal of the ship’s ballast, 130 tons of stone and iron. Next, the bilge and hull were
evaluated to determine what needed to be replaced to make the ship seaworthy. After
this work was accomplished, the ship was towed back to Plymouth with work continuing
above deck. Now the ship is again in Mystic for further repair and restoration.
