Music starting from “Konbanwa”
Maya Hayashi (hereinafter called “Maya”): João-san says, “Konbanwa” on his album “JOÃO
GILBERTO in Tokyo,” doesn't he? I like that “Konbanwa” very much and listened to it many
times (laughter).
It's because the word “Konbanwa” is not just a “Konbanwa” but there was melody in it and it
became the music of João-san. It's very warm and gentle and with just this word, I felt drawn
into João-san's music world and I thought what a nice person he was.
Jin Nakahara (hereinafter called “Nakahara”): Originally, when João Gilberto appeared on a
stage, he just kept singing and left. So I was very surprised. My tension of waiting for his first
performance in Japan was released at once and I could get into his song world in a burst.
Maya: With what kind of feeling did you see his performance?
Nakahara: I felt as if João, who was just alone on the stage of that huge Hall A of the Tokyo
International Forum, was singing close to my ears and just for me. I think this was what all
the other 5,000 people there felt, too. When a song finished and when I started to clap my
hands, my neighbors also started clapping, then I got back to myself and noticed that I was
in a concert hall. It was like that. I felt as if I was inside of João's music and it was such a
music experience I've never had.
Maya: I thought this live performance “in Tokyo” was good. I felt as if I was sitting on a warm
veranda of my home town and there a neighboring old man - this is João-san - was also
sitting nonchalantly and was playing the guitar for me, without saying anything. With the
next song, I felt as if a boy who has just become a new boyfriend was playing the guitar in a
park. I had such a warm feeling. He shows various personalities: becoming a young man,
father or friend. I think this is exactly João-san's attraction.
Nakahara: I think it's a very nice way to listen to his music.
Maya: I also change myself, becoming his girlfriend and a little girl.
I want to see his last miracle for the first time.
Maya: My live performance is made up of talk, talk, song, and then talk, talk and talk, but
João-san never speaks between songs, does he?
Nakahara: Right, he hardly speaks. I heard he would not decide how many songs he would
sing and songs vary every time. The last performance of 2004 was gorgeous. He sang 45
songs. There were about 3 encores and in the middle of them he sang a song which was
made after he came to Japan, to show his appreciation to the Japanese people. João is not
service-minded, nor good at diplomatic remarks. I thought he really liked Japan. He
continued after that and sang a total of 45 songs, so I wondered if João had already
decided to make it his last concert in Japan. But his third visit was set for this year.
Maya: You must be very, very happy.
Nakahara: He is old and nobody knows how much longer you can see his live stage
performances. He hardly performs concerts, and actually, he recently had concerts only in
Japan. However, as long as you see his stage show, you don't feel his age. Rather than
relying on his past fame or singing his old songs as he did in the past, even with the songs
which he has been singing for more than 50 years, he presents them in a fresh way as if
they were newly born. I felt that this person always looks forward and looks to the future. So,
when I listen to his music, I forget his age, 70 and then some.
Maya: João-san must be speaking of his life in his own words in his songs.
Nakahara: In 2003, he kept silent closing his eyes for 20 minutes listening to the Japanese
audience's endless applause. Then suddenly, hardly-speaking João spoke up saying, “I will
give a kiss to each of your hands and hearts. Arigato, Japon.” He said “thank you” in
Japanese. I heard he was telling his staff that he was counting each hand and heart of
5,000 people when closing his eyes as the Japanese audience was so wonderful. I think his
real liking of Japanese audiences led to his third visit to Japan. What sort of legend can we
encounter? I would like to welcome his wonderful stage performance as one of his wonderful
audiences.
Maya: His live show this time is subtitled, “The Last Miracle,” but for me, this will be the first
time. So I would like to encounter something new for me like the word, bossa nova.
Maya Hayashi
She made her debut as a fashion model in the 1980s and
appeared in the “Marie Claire” French version, the first time for
Japanese. Starting from the Paris Collection, she took an
active part in various fashion shows. She was attracted by jazz
in the 1990s and made her CD debut with an album of the

a “Ping-Pong Club” and an “Association to Bring My
Chopsticks” to protect the global environment.

Brazilian music since 1988, he has been producing programs
focusing on J-WAVE and also has been working as a
supervisor/music selector for compilation CDs. He is a
producer of Brazilian music concerts and a stage-director (for
Lisa Ono's 2003 concert tour, etc.). In addition, he has been
acting as a writer, DJ, MC and lecturer at culture centers. He
has written “Brazilian Music” and “Brazilian Music 2001”
(Ongaku no tomo sha).
What is bossa nova?
“Bossa” means “trend” and “nova” means “new” and if you translate it literally, it means
“new trend,” but it is said that “bossa” was used as a buzz term meaning “smart” in Rio De
Janeiro in the 1940s. When João Gilberto released his LP for the first time, Tom Jobim, who
composed João's songs, wrote in the description of the songs that João Gilberto is “bossa
nova.” Therefore, it is said that the most advanced samba style created by João Gilberto was
called “bossa nova.”

When you walk in the town of Tokyo and enter various shops, you
can almost always hear bossa nova. Bossa nova, music beloved
by a wide range of people regardless of age and now enrooted in
the daily lives of people in Tokyo, was created by a singer/guitarist
in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil about 50 years ago.
The person's name is João Gilberto. He presented the samba
rhythm with just one guitar and added a sophisticated novel
harmony to traditional samba music. Through his cool and
delicate singing voice, as if he was whispering in somebody's ear,
he established a new style of music presentation, which was later
called bossa nova.
A composer who admired João's such talent was Antônio Carlos
Jobim. He composed many songs for João such as "The Girl from
Ipanema," "Desafinado," and "One Note Samba." Through João's
“voice and guitar,” these songs, spread throughout the world
from Brazil and are still kept alive as standard numbers
representing the popular music of the 20th century.
João Gilberto rarely performs concerts and is covered by a
mysterious veil. It was in September 2003 when João Gilberto's
first Japan tour, which can be called a miracle, was realized, after
45 years since the creation of bossa nova and when he was over
70 years old. Tickets for a total of 20,000 seats in 4 concerts
were sold out in a minute and the Hall A of the Tokyo International
Forum on September 11 was filled with an unusual atmosphere of
the expectation and tension of 5,000 people who were witnessing
a historical moment.
João's voice and guitar gently permeated the large hall.
5,000 people were overwhelmed by the magnificent world
which was created by only one person.
Silence and excitement, tension and relaxation. Everybody was fascinated by João's magic
and almost 2 hours, which was thought to be permanent, passed away in a moment. João
was also impressed with the Japanese audience whom he met for the first time and told his
staff, “I've been looking for such an audience for years. Japan is wonderful.” As proof that
this was not a diplomatic remark, with João's strong desire, a live CD “João Gilberto in Tokyo”
in which the concert at the Tokyo International Forum was recorded, was released all over
the world.
João, who became enraptured of Japan, visited again in 2004. He will now “be back” for the
third time in November 2006. What sort of legend will be born in Hall A of the Tokyo
International Forum this year, which has almost become his castle?

Special tour celebrating the 10th anniversary of his solo debut. You must see the
collaboration with Iwao Furusawa, his great mentor!
Taro Hakase has been involved in a myriad of activities as a violinist and a general director
of his self-produced label, “HATS.” His activities are very unique and multilateral - such as
performances of “Image5” which has become a synonym for healing music and a release of
the album, “THE BEST OF MOZART SELECTED BY TARO HAKASE” in which performing pieces
and the order was decided with the theme, “What would it be like if Mozart were alive and
gave a live performance?” Hakase's live tour celebrating the 10th anniversary of his solo
debut will finally start. Inviting Iwao Furusawa as a special guest, whom Hakase has been
admiring from his junior-high school days, he will show us his new vision of the world.

An amazing man will be back after a 5-year interval. Please enjoy the intimate
world of grand illusion.
David Copperfield is an amazing magician who made the Statue of Liberty in New York
disappear, jumped through the air above the Grand Canyon and passed through the Great
Wall of China. That man of miracles will be back in Japan after a 5-year interval to deliver us
with a new sensation. “My magic is based on the daily dreams and wishes you think of,” says
Copperfield. The key word of his performance this time, “Grand Illusion,” was born from his
memory of his late grandfather. The grand illusion will be far beyond our imagination,
surpassing the border of a dream and reality. You will be a witness of the miracle here.

Toward the year of the 200th anniversary of Mendelssohn's birth, global scale
charity concerts will begin.
Mendelssohn is a composer who represents the German music of the 19th century. He
made enormous contributions as a conductor and a founder of the first music school of
Germany. Toward 2009, the year of the 200th anniversary of his birth, global scale concerts
which will tour Venice, Tokyo, New York, Leipzig and Paris, will start. At the Tokyo concert, we
will have Kurt Masur, as a conductor, who is a former Kapellmeister of the Gewandhaus
Orchestra, where Mendelssohn also acted as a Kapellmeister, and Sayaka Shoji, a new and
promising violinist. Famous pieces of Mendelssohn's will be presented by them. The essence
of music beyond generations will be ringing.

SCAJ (Specialty Coffee Association of Japan) is addressing a variety of activities
aiming for diffusion of the coffee culture and good coffee in Japan. This summer,
SCAJ held the largest coffee exhibition in Japan at the Exhibition Hall of the Tokyo
International Forum. We interviewed Mr. Tatsuji Ueshima, Chairman of SCAJ about
the feedback of the event.
(Specialty coffee to link production and consumption)
The Specialty Coffee Association of Japan (SCAJ) is a young organization established in
2003, but the thought of specialty coffee (hereinafter referred to as “SC”) itself has a long
history. SC means “high quality and good coffee.” Moreover, SC is a coffee originated from
consumers, while general coffee was originated from producers.
The share of the SC market in the world coffee market is still small, but we are expecting
that it will be the one to lead the future coffee industry. SC is coffee with high added value,
which is evaluated as good coffee by consumers, and which is bought regardless of the
price. The value will be generated when coffee-producing countries produce safe and good
coffee, which is sought by consumers, according to a production standard. We recognize
that building a bridge between Japanese consumers and coffee producers is a role of SCAJ.
As most of coffee-producing countries are developing countries, distribution of high-valueadded coffee leads to supporting the economic development of such countries. Therefore, I
firmly believe that healthy communication between producing countries and consuming
countries through coffee leads to contributing to world peace.
An organization which aims toward the raising of a healthy Japanese market and increase
of consumption by collaborating with the world relevant groups in order to diffuse SC and
educate consumers about SC in Japan is SCAJ, and its representative activity was “SCAJ
2006,” an SC exhibition, which was held this summer.
(Tastily and enjoyably - communicating to the world)
Next year, the world top baristas from more than 40 countries will
gather together and the “World Barista Championship (WBC),” to
compete for the world's No. 1 barista, will be held in Japan for the
first time in Asia. For this, I believe this year's “SCAJ 2006” was very
significant as a pre-event 1 year in advance. “SCAJ 2006” made a big
success by gathering, in just 2 days, the number of people targeted
for 3 days. Having so many people also today, I'm very satisfied that
this was very successful as a pre-event.
It was very effective as we could inform many people about SC and
could show the high quality of Japanese coffee and SCAJ's
organization and management power to overseas people of coffee
industries.
I think the good location of the Tokyo International Forum also contributed to so many
people gathering for this event. It is located at the center of Tokyo and close to the Ginza
area and transportation availability is good for people from rural areas. If you use subways,
you don't get caught in the rain. There was a forecast for a typhoon in Tokyo today, but
everybody could visit the venue safely.
I also think the modern appearance of the building fit the new image of SC.

colors of the Forum's visual identity, it will be presented
on the venue posters and patches worn by staff
members. In addition, the theme of “A Day of
Enthusiasm” Music Festival 2007 was decided on,
“Harmony of Nations.” With the new campaign of “harmony,” the Tokyo International Forum
will continue to aim to be a further “impression-creating company.”

Artworks Gathered in “Ship of Diversity”
“Ship of Diversity” = Artwork Collection Concept of the Tokyo International Forum
By Tatsumi Shinoda (Selection Director for Tokyo International Forum Artwork)
Series No. 16 Artist in the Spotlight
Masaaki Yamada
A big blue painting painted by a Japanese
leading expert of modernism paintings. There are
fans who regard Yamada as a painter of blue.
Certainly, the total impression of his painting is
blue.
When you talk about a blue painting, it reminds
me of the “Blue Period” of Picasso's. It is said
that Picasso heavily used blue paint in his poor
youth as it was cheap.
In old Europe, there was a time when blue paint
was more expensive than gold because a mineral
substance, lapis lazuli was used in it. It was
mainly used to paint sacred things.
“Almost Transparent Blue” was a title of a best-selling book. However, the blue of Yamada's
is not transparent.
It is not the blue of youth, nor the sacred blue and nor the transparent blue. That is
Yamada's blue. In addition, there is not only blue. There are yellow, green, gray and red
colors.
When you look at this painting, things appearing together with the blue are squares
divided into small ones. These are precisely painted in every corner.
The first place I visited after I started my career as an art critic was Yamada's former house
in Tokyo where his atelier was located. His house was built along a steep slope. After
entering the house from the entrance, I walked down the stairs. The atmosphere was
modern. His stripe work was in the room.
As he has been painting only stripes for a long time, I thought his eyeballs might be
different from ordinary people.
The blue painting placed at the Tokyo International Forum is flat. I can understand if you
align square panel boards, but what he did was purposely divide one flat canvas and paint
every corner of each square. You would be amazed with the elaboration.
It seems Cezanne's painting will be one painting, even if you cut anywhere out of it, and I
thought Yamada's divided painting may be relevant to Cezanne's and I started talking to
him.
The blue color seems to be the lowest common multiple in order to easily unify the entire
picture which may be uncoordinated with different colors.
It was not a painting to speak up with the expression of colors but his fondness for colors
has not changed from his early years. He likes blue and the karashi color (yellow).
“Please come again,” said a painter of medium height with a thin body and critic's eyes, as
I was leaving.
A house on a slope may change its figure according to the change of the town and age,
but paintings with flat and strong stripes and paintings of a square surface do not change. I
have recently come to think this way.
