Message from the Director
All life on earth depends on plants. Plants are the lungs of our planet;
they feed us, clothe and shelter us, provide medicines, beautify our
surroundings and create millions of jobs. Lotusland, and all botanic
gardens, help to foster an appreciation of nature’s complex biological
balance, as well as its incredible beauty, and man’s unique place in the
natural world.
Plant and animal life on earth is threatened at an alarming rate. Some
scientists tell us we are losing 3 living species every hour of every day.
Botanic gardens play an increasingly critical role in conservation. We are
a repository for plants – a safe haven that preserves and protects species.
Many of Lotusland’s plants are Mediterranean in origin and found only
in one location. As 95% of the Mediterranean plant habitat has disappeared, Lotusland holds some
of the germplasm, a safeguard should the remaining 5% also disappear. A global cooperative network
of botanic gardens shares in this preservation of invaluable species. We are the banks that protect and
guarantee the future of plant diversity. Someday, we may be able to put back into the wild that which
has been rendered extinct.
Botanic gardens serve as strong social and political advocates for the natural world. Our research
and conservation efforts make us key policy influencers on plant extinction and climactic changes
that may threaten habitats and ultimately mankind. Lotusland is also a place to learn about living
sustainably and connecting to nature. We are a green oasis of living things, a repository for species
that are safe from extinction and a laboratory that leads the way to greater sustainability and responsible care for our environment.
Botanic gardens create a sense of place in a community – and in many cases a sense of history.
Lotusland has been a garden for 130 years, dating back to the days Kinton Stevens had a commercial
nursery on the property with palms, fruit trees, olives and a Monterey Cypress that is still a significant feature in the garden today. Lotusland is a historic community treasure as one of the only estates
built during the golden age that is open to the public. Ganna Walska’s famed garden has been part of
regional (and global) lore for over eight decades. Lotusland helps protect plants from extinction,
provides jobs, encourages tourism, educates Santa Barbara County’s fourth graders and serves underserved members of our community via our Open Pathways program. Lotusland also matters to the
community because we offer a beautiful, tranquil respite that engenders a sense of physical well-being
and is healing to the soul. Simply put, Ganna Walska Lotusland matters and we thank you very
much for believing in and sharing our mission.

$1 Million Endowment Grant for
the Blue Garden
The Blue Garden Endowment Fund will care for the Blue
Garden in perpetuity and was made possible by a generous
grant from the Hind Foundation in Honor of Greg Wm.
Hind in October 2014.
The Blue Garden was originally created as a “silver garden” in
1942 designed by Lockwood de Forest. It was later modified
by Ralph Stevens with other “blue” foliaged plants all in shades
of pastel blue: blue fescue grass, blue spruce, blue Atlas cedars,
and blue fan palms. Sixty-five years later the blue Atlas cedars
grew to heights of 60 feet and shaded much of the garden and
the garden became less blue and less vibrant. Thanks to the
generous previous support of the Hind Foundation the garden
was renovated in 2012 and restored to its former glory and
beautiful blue-ness! Large cedars replaced by young specimens,
the soil was renovated, more blue Hesper palms were added, an
irrigation system was installed, and the pathways were widened
to ADA standards. Our plan is to endow one garden at a time
and we are especially grateful to the Hind Foundation who
understands the power of endowment and chose to honor Mr.
Hind in this exceptional manner.
