Chemicals Food cravings Artificial Sweeteners The End of Overeating Food Sensitivity vs. Food Allergy Food Sensitivity: A food sensitivity is the tendency for the body to react unfavorably to a particular food. This reaction leads to inflammation and tissue damage that causes many problems. Food sensitivities can be very difficult to identify because these reactions can take anywhere from 45 minutes to several days to manifest. That means you could be reacting today to something you ate 2 or 3 days ago! Food Allergy: Food allergies and food sensitivities are two entirely different things. Although they are both reactions to food, that’s where the similarities end. Unlike food sensitivities, food allergies are typically very easy to identify because the reactions are often immediate and dramatic. With a food allergy, your body is reacting to an immune response (as though there is a foreign invader in your body). Most common foods people are sensitive / allergic to: •Corn •Soy •Wheat •Dairy •Eggs •Peanuts •Shellfish •Tree nuts (walnuts, cashews, hazelnuts, pistachio, brazil, almond, etc) Common Symptoms for food sensitivities / allergies • Tired / low energy /agitation • Runny nose • Skin problems • Headaches • Weight gain • Congestion* • The corners of your eyes itch* • GI problems (constipation, diarrhea, bloating, gas, etc.)* • Arthritic pain (i.e.. Muscle and joint pain)* * These are the most common symptoms according to Stephen Rechtschaffen, MD. (from the Omega Institute) How to test yourself for food sensitivities. 1) Pay attention to how you are feeling after each meal. Write it down. If you notice a common denominator, choose that food group to work on first. 2) Take out that food (I.e. all dairy or all wheat, etc) for 7 days. 3) On the 8th day, add that food back in. If you are sensitive to that food, you will experience a strong reaction - When to seek professional help. You should seek professional help when you feel you’ve done all that you can but are still feeling that you have symptoms that are not going away. There are other types of allergies / sensitivities that you may have 1. Food 2. Chemical (perfumes, dyes, detergents, shampoos, cosmetics) 3. Environmental (i.e.. If you live in the city, the smog) Action Steps: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Let’s do an experiment this week. Take all dairy out of your diet (i.e.. Milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, cottage cheese, cream cheese, cream for coffee, sour cream, curd, protein powders or bars that have whey or casein, etc.) for 7 days and add it back in on the 7th day. On the 8th day, add dairy back in. Post your results in the forum. Let us know how you felt or any changes that you noticed. What should you replace it with for these 7 days? Keep adding in new foods this week and incorporate them into your meals as often as you can. Make sure you keep your buddies accountable. Always remember, to have this work twice as fast, keep journaling, it brings more clarity to your eating.
