Living in the Wakatipu Basin you simply cannot escape the fact we are driven by
tourism. There seems to be an insatiable appetite for growth. More visitors, more
bed nights, more flights in and out of Queenstown Airport. All these things are
craved by Destination Queenstown and those that support it.
But there is a problem in the quest for short term, year on year, increases in visitor
numbers. When will enough be enough, and a town the size of Queenstown, with
three roads in and out, fail to cope. In my opinion, that point is fast approaching if
we do not take a step back, look into the future far far away and start to plan.
This is the kind of forward thinking the people behind ‘Shaping Our Future’ are
trying to stimulate when they call for attendees to forums, like the one being held
at 5pm this Friday (4th April) at the Memorial Centre. The topic is the future of
tourism and visitor economies in the Queenstown Lakes and how collectively as a
community we can create a vision or goal that best achieves the right result for not
only the tourism industry but an ever increasing resident population.
As I scan my eye down the list put forward by the Shaping Our Future committee
of who should attend this forum, two interest groups leap out – all residents, and
those people interested in the future of the Lakes District. It is not the exclusive
domain of tourism leaders and QLDC to decide the shape our future should take.
We would probably end up with a decision based on self-interest, or in the case of
our council, the cheapest option if it was left to them alone to make these long term
decisions. Therefore it is the job of the little guy to put a different slant on these
discussions and give the people charged with actually making these decisions food
for thought.
Most of us have some sort of social consciousness and the hard part of converting
that human desire to make a positive difference from thought to reality, is actually
voicing your opinion. When it comes to Shaping Our Future every bright idea needs
to be heard. This is not a discussion on the immediate issues facing our town but
rather a forward thinking one and sometimes the brightest ideas come from the
most unlikely source. It could be your idea that ends up making a sizable difference
to the future of us all. Big things start from small beginnings. Shaping Our Future is
a process for uniting people of the Queenstown Lakes District around a common
vision for the future. It is driven by the community and without a healthy slice of
community buy in will not achieve its objectives.

Mickey Mouse Country?
I don’t know if it is just me, the way I am seeing
things in Queenstown, but after 14 years here
it feels as if I have seen things that I have never
seen anywhere else in the world - and I have
been around.
Yesterday, while sitting in the car waiting to join
the main road from my driveway, I see a young
man belting down Fernhill Road on a skateboard
- at astonishing speed. His hands were jammed
deep in his trouser pockets, and his head was
tilted towards a cellphone, tucked into his
neck. He was having a rare old conversation.
Meanwhile, drivers were backed up all the way
down Fernhill Road as this character went about
his business. I have never seen this anywhere
else, except in do-as-you-want-everything’scool Queenstown.
Also, a few months ago I was driving to
Arrowtown from Queenstown. I was cruising
along at 100 kph, the maximum speed in this
country, as every human being here knows.
Suddenly, as if from nowhere, a car comes
alongside me, and an old lady - she could have
been anybody’s grandmother - scowled at me
and shook her fist as she sped up and vanished
into the distance. She must have been doing at
least 130kph.
I mean, what the hell is going on in this place?
Is it some Mickey Mouse country, where
anything goes? Or am I doing something wrong
that everyone else is doing right?

I want to whinge about the whingers who
whinge about car parking in Queenstown.
I relocated to Queenstown a few months
ago after living in a couple of big Aussie
cities for a few years.
Street talk
Occasionally I see the little street sweeper
machine doing its thing around town sweeping
and supposedly cleaning the footpaths. What
I am wondering is whether anyone has read
the operating manual as the footpaths around
the CBD are filthy. I had a good look where
the machine had been one day and really
couldn’t see what difference it had made as
far as cleaning. The other thing that would be
good is getting all landlords along with their

tenants to pay attention to the look of their
premises as this all contributes to the image of
the town in general. Whether this be making
sure gutters work, the colour of outdoor
furniture not being bright purple, a roof
needing a repaint, can all make the difference
as to whether visitors feel we are in fact the
tourism jewel we promote ourselves as.
Open your eyes people, or travel! It’s
usually not too hard finding a park in the
city, and the parking is pretty cheap. Think
$2 per hour is pricey, think again!
In many Aussie cities it’s $12-15 or more
per hour. In the weekends here you can
usually find a free parking space within 5
minutes walk of the town centre.
We live in a bloody great place and the
parking is not bad at all.

Night Shift Produce Manager
This is a busy, physically demanding role managing a team of produce night shift
pickers and packers and ensuring that all deadlines and customer service standards are
