Description of Agro-climatic Zone & major agro ecological situations (based on soil & topography)
Agro-climatic Zone
IV-A
(Sub-humid
Southern plain and
Aravali hills
Characteristics
This zone covers a geographical area of about 3364.4 thousand hectares spread over Bhilwara, Rajsamand, parts of
Udaipur, Chittorgarh and Sirohi districts. The terrain is irregular; the soils are litho-soils at the foot hills in Udaipur and
Chittorgarh districts while those away from the hills are old alluviums. The rainfall ranges from 500mm in the west and
north-east to about 700 mm in the south-east and above 900 mm in the south-west. The mean daily maximum
temperature of Udaipur ranges from 24.2 C in January to 38.6 C in May. Of the total geographical area, nearly 27.4%
is under cultivation (net sown). About 43.4% of the net area sown is double cropped. Forests occupy 606.6 thousand
hectares, which is 18.0% of the TGA. The rest comprises 23.0% land not available for cultivation, 24.9% other
uncultivated land and 6.7% under fallow land (Fig.25). About 50.8% of net area sown is under irrigation against the
9
state average of 26.4%. Well irrigation is more predominant upto 74.8%, while tanks, canals, tube-wells, and other
sources account for 17.9, 4.1, 2.6 and 0.6%, respectively. The principal crops of the zone are maize (33.6%),
sorghum (5.0%) groundnut (6.1%), cotton (1.4%), Kharif pulses (6.0%), wheat (22.1%), barley (3.5%), chickpea
(4.6%) and rapeseed and mustard (4.4%), sesame (2.9%)
