WHAT IS THE ROLE OF YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE FIGHT
FOR GENDER EQUALITY?
A deeper look at the global population
brings out a striking image of the ever
increasing gender disparities in the way
societies treat young women and men.
On one hand, women are still treated
as subordinates in many parts of the
world; they face multiple layers of
discrimination; a range of interrelated
challenges affect their leadership in
economic, social, political, cultural and
civil spheres; and those belonging to
certain class and ethnicity also face
compounded levels of discrimination.
While on the other hand, their male peers are often seen enjoying better treatment, which
further results in a higher status and an improved position in the society. This is not to say
that men do not face any discrimination at all. They do, especially when it is related to
ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, and disability. By Ravi Karkara. Read more at here.

PAKISTAN FAILURE TO OUTLAW CHILD MARRIAGE
SPARKS OUTCRY
Activists in Pakistan have demanded the
removal of the chief of the Council of
Islamic Ideology (CII) after a bill to
increase the minimum legal age for
marriage from 16 to 18 was opposed and
termed "blasphemous" by the advisory
body. The National Assembly's Standing
Committee on Religious Affairs and
Interfaith Harmony rejected the "child
marriage restraint" bill after the council
dubbed it "anti-Islamic". According to a
UNICEF estimate, 3 percent of girls in Pakistan are married before they turn 15 and 21
percent before age 18. Read more at here.

TRANSITIONING FROM MDGS TO SDGS: ENGAGING
YOUTH
The Forum discussed ways in which
young people can and are helping to
manage the shift from the Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs) to the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
It also addressed ways to ensure that
the needs and priorities of all youth are
at the centre of the future development
agenda and its implementation. The Youth Forum brought young leaders from around the
world to the UN Headquarters in New York. It is a platform for youth to engage in dialogue
with Member States and contribute to policy formulation on economic and social aspects.

10 THINGS YOU WON'T
BELIEVE ABOUT
HUMAN
TRAFFICKING
January 11th is National Human
Trafficking Awareness Day in the US. It's
common to think trafficking only occurs
in places such as Southeast Asia or
Eastern Europe, but it's a global problem
affecting the world's most vulnerable
people, especially girls, women and
children. That's why the US Senate
established this day in 2007 to create
awareness and work to end human
trafficking. The numbers behind human
trafficking are difficult to fully grasp but
these are some staggering facts that you
won't believe. More info at here.
YOUNG, GIFTED AND HELD BACK
Roughly a quarter of the world's peoplesome 1.8 billion-have turned 15 but not
yet reached 30. In many ways, they are
the luckiest group of young adults ever to
have existed. They are richer than any
previous generation, and live in a world
without smallpox or Mao Zedong. They
are the best-educated generation everHaitians today spend longer in school
than Italians did in 1960. Thanks to all
that extra learning and to better nutrition,
they are also more intelligent than their elders. If they are female or gay, they enjoy greater
freedom in more countries than their predecessors would have thought possible. And they
can look forward to improvements in technology that will, say, enable many of them to live
well past 100. So what, exactly, are they complaining about? Read more at here.
CAN WE PLEASE STOP PRETENDING MARIJUANA IS
HARMLESS?
These days, it's become fairly square to
criticize marijuana and its rush toward
legalization. Twenty-three states have
condoned the drug in some form, with
four permitting recreational use, and
Massachusetts is set to vote on
permitting it next year. The proposed
federal CARERS Act of 2015 would let
states legalize medical marijuana without
federal interference and demote pot from
a Schedule I drug-one with high abuse
potential-to Schedule II. The path toward
nationwide decriminalization is looking unobstructed. Read more at here.
THIS TECHNOLOGY IS 100 TIMES FASTER THAN WI-FI
A new technology, known as Li-Fi, could
one day offer internet speeds one
hundred times faster than the Wi-Fi we
use
today.
Scientists
have
achieved speeds in the lab of up to 224
GB per second. That's the equivalent
of downloading 18 movies in the blink of
an eye. Li-Fi, or light fidelity, is now
moving to trials in the real world, with
office tests in Tallin, Estonia achieving speeds of 1 GB per second, 100 times the speed of
traditional Wi-Fi. Read more at here.
IF OCEANS WERE A COUNTRY...
The World Wildlife Fund recently
estimated that the total asset base of the
ocean is valued at US$24 trillion, and the
annual "gross marine product" (GMP) equivalent to a country's annual gross
domestic product - is at least US$2.5
trillion. To make that real, imagine that
we gave every person alive in the world
today US$350 every year; we'd still have
a little left over from the wealth we
extract from the oceans annually. If the
ocean were a country it would have the
seventh largest economy in the world - larger than Brazil's or Russia's. Read more at here.
FRESH GRADUATES
EMPLOYERS
NOT
UP
TO
MARK,
SAY
According to online recruitment platform
JobStreet's latest survey, employers are
disappointed with Malaysian fresh
graduates with 70% reporting that the
standards of fresh graduates were just
average. During the unveiling of the
November 2015 survey, Chook Yuh Yng,
JobStreet country manager (pic) said
24% of employers also believed that
graduates' standards "were bad and only
6%
said
they
were
good,"
reportedComputerworld Malaysia. The
poor ratings were not generally linked to
their academic qualifications, but rather
their poor attitudes and communication skills shown during interviews or at work, Chook
said. Read more at here.
