Final Leg Of The George Strait 2002
Tour To Get Underway In September
The final leg of the 2002 George Strait concert tour, sponsored by Chevy Trucks and the
GM Card, will kick off in Auburn Hills,
Michigan on September 12th and culminate
in San Antonio, Texas at the new SBC Arena
on November 2nd.
JoDee Messina, two-time CMA Female
Vocalist of the Year nominee and the 1999
CMA Horizon Award winner, will be Strait’s
guest on the tour. The first leg of the tour in
late February and early March, included
Lafayette, LA, Memphis, TN, and Houston,
TX. The final leg will include stops in 14 different states including Michigan, Tennessee,
North Carolina, California (3), Indiana, Ohio
(2), New York (2), Pennsylvania, Texas (3),
New Mexico (2), Oregon, Washington, Idaho
and Oklahoma. Many of the cities on the tour
are cities where George has not appeared in a
number of years. Please check the itinerary
page of the newsletter for the cities that the
tour will visit as well as the projected dates
and on-sales.
As previously announced, the 2002 George
Strait Tour will return to the Arena setting
and will utilize an in-the-square concept. The
stage will be in the middle of the floor and
will contain a microphone on each side of the
stage with George working each side of the
stage. The concept gives everyone a much
closer view of the stage. In addition, video
screens will be utilized. n

Perform The First Concert To Be Held
In San Antonio’s New SCB Center
SAN ANTONIO — On November 2nd, San
Antonio’s brand new state-of-the-art entertainment and sports arena, The SBC Center,
will celebrate its grand opening with alive
performance from legendary country music
superstar, George Strait.
With record breaking sales of over 57 million, 47 number one singles, and armloads of
awards, George Strait is undeniably one of
the most successful recording artists in history. Now the Texas native and avid Spurs fan
will delight his hometown crowd as the first
entertainer to grace the stage of the 18,500
seat venue. Tickets for George Strait’s live
concert are scheduled to go on sale in July.
“We are thrilled to be hosting George Strait
as our first major music icon, as well as one
of our very own South Texas treasures, which
makes him the perfect entertainer to introduce the arena to San Antonio.”
“George Strait embodies the family-oriented
style of entertainment we plan on including
in the annual schedule of events at the SBC
Center,” said SBC Center Vice President and
General Manager Steve Zito. “By taking part
in the Center’s grand opening festivities,
Strait will help show everyone what an
incredible concert venue and asset it will be
to the South Texas com-munity.”
“It’s an honor to be the first performer at the
new SBC Center,” said George Strait. “San
Antonio is my home and I now only look forward to performing there, but also to attending Spurs games, the rodeo, and other events.
It’s a great addition to our town.”

building, San Antonio is excited to watch as
our SBC Center becomes a reality,” said
Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff. “I can’t
thank of a better entertainer than George
Strait - a Texas native - to help the Spurs and
Bexar County open the doors of this state-ofthe-art arena to all of South Texas.” n

The George Strait Team Roping
Classic Announces 2003 Dates
Team Roping to Take Place on March 14 & 15
NASHVILLE, TN — Dates for the 21st
Annual George Strait Team Roping Classic
have been set for March 14 & 15. The 2003
event will once again take place at the Rose
Palace in San Antonio, TX.
Sponsored by Chevy Trucks and Tractor
Supply Company, this year’s roping event
was the most successful in its 20-year history. A record breaking 562 teams competed
on March 15 and 16 in front of the sold out
Texas crowd. This year’s incredible turn out
could be attributed, in part, to moving the
event from July, as in past years, to a more
accommodating March date. Not only was
the temperature more moderate, the routing
was also easier on many of the ropers who
might otherwise be in the Pacific Northwest
during July. “I had no idea, really, that
changing the dates on it would increase the
teams so much. I was really surprised, but
I’m really glad because the payout was phenomenal for an “open.” You really don’t see
that,” said Strait.
In fact, this year’s GSTRC winners picked
up nearly $300,000 in cash and prizes
including two loaded Chevy Dually Pick-Up
Trucks and matching three-horse Bruton
Trailers, hand-tooled Twister Saddles and
George Strait Team Roping Classic belt
buckles by Gist. In addition, every roper that
qualified to return for the second day earned
GSTRC signature jackets by Wrangler.
Adding to the prize money and the excitement, HEB Food Stores sponsored the HEB
Challenge giving ropers a chance to win
even more cash. If a team happened to win
their round with a steer donning a red wrapping around its horns, they received an extra
$2,500 from HEB.
The George Strait Team Roping Classic
began 20 years ago in Kingsville, TX as a
small family event for local ropers. Each
year the number of teams and the prize
money payout increases making it one of the
biggest and most anticipated roping events
of each year.
When asked about the phenomenal growth
of his event over the years, host George
Strait replied, “I don’t know that twenty
years ago we really had an idea of what this
could become. We knew we wanted to make
it a special roping and we thought that we
could do that. We had a Texas resident roping back then and after a couple two or three
years, we opened it up to the world and that
really made a difference. As we went along,
it became more and more clear just how big
we could grow this thing. Every year we’ve
tried to get bigger and better.” n

Anita’s Notes:
We are six months into the year. Before you
know it Christmas will be just around the
corner. The days come and go so quickly.
Maybe it is just me, but it sure would be nice
if we could put the brakes on the calendar for
a little bit. With the first part of the year
done, I believe the second part will travel
even faster. By the time you receive this
issue of Strait Talk, George will have
enjoyed another Kentucky Derby, another
birthday and will have updated his Chevy
Truck show video that intros his shows. He
has also traveled a little, rested a little and
performed on the Academy of Country
Music Awards show.
The next part of the 2002 George Strait
Tour will be here before you know it. We are
happy to announce that the 1999 CMA
Horizon Award winner and 2-time CMA
Female Vocalist of the Year nominee, Jo Dee
Messina, will join George for all of his dates
this year. Those of you who saw George in
Lafayette and Memphis know what an outstanding show she puts on. We are thrilled to
have her with us again. The rest of the tour
will start in Auburn Hills, MI on September
12th and end in San Antonio, TX on
November 2nd. Please check out the itinerary
on the back page for all of the cities, dates,
venues and on-sale information. Please
remember that all of that information is tentative and subject to change. Please keep an

for any changes, or if you are not computer

George and George Jr.’s birthdays. They
have been forwarded to them. They send
their sincere appreciation and thanks to all of
those thoughtful fans.
A continued thank you to the fan club members who send in newspaper clippings,
reviews, photos, games and stories for the
collectable column as well as for use elsewhere in the newsletter. We appreciate it.
Please go to that section and read about how
you can earn Strait Cash. While we are on
the subject, we are diligently looking for several items that you might help us with. We
are trying to find copies of any radio or TV
interviews that George may have done over
the years. We have a number of them but are
continually looking for the ones we don’t
have. We are also in the process of collecting
magazine covers that George has appeared
on throughout his career. Newspapers with a
full cover photo are also something we are
looking for. We have many of the magazines
and newspapers but not all. Many of the
magazines and newspapers are out of business now. If you have a magazine cover,
newspaper or catalog cover that you think
we might use, please scan it on your computer and e-mail it to us at [email protected]. We would very much appreciate it. This is a new e-mail address that will
only be used for things of this nature and
there will not be anyone available to respond
to any other questions. Also, if you have a
live radio or TV interview that you think we
would like to have, please send us a copy of
it. We sincerely appreciate it.
We are in the process of making some
changes to our website. These changes will
be taking place over the next few months.
We hope you like them. There is not much
we can talk about right now as the plans are
still being formulated.

As we approach this summertime it
reminds us that the 4th of July holiday period is nearing. This 4th of July is the first
one we will observe since the September
11th tragedy. Our prayers go out to the families of those that were lost on that horrific
day and our thanks and prayers also go out
to our servicemen and women in
Afghanistan and around the world who are
doing their very best to protect the freedom
that we all hold so dear and sacred.
Freedom is a very precious thing and we all
know that sacrifices must be made on all of
our parts to protect it. GOD BLESS
