Bosphorus Tube Crossing Project (Turkey) Sector Railways Project Type Urban Railway for MRT Project Title The Engineering and Consulting Services for Gebze-Haydarpasa, SirkeciHalkali Commuter Rails Upgrading and Railway Bosphorus Tube Crossing Construction (Marmaray) Location Istanbul, Turkey Client General Directorate of Infrastructure Investments (AYGM) Project Period March 2002 – Present Railway lines on both sides of the strait were linked through a submerged rail tube tunnel spanning the Bosphorus Problem Addressed by the Project Services Provided One of the most important problems of Istanbul is the difficulty of traffic management resulting from the rapid population growth and the traffic increase. Heaviest traffic can be seen on the bridges over the Bosphorus Strait. The Strait connecting the two continents has been serving vehicles with the help of two bridges and numbers of ferryboats. However, the total capacity was still insufficient and traffic could be gridlocked especially during the morning and afternoon rush hours. In order to address these issues, the Government initiated the Project Marmaray, which is designed to provide railway service connecting the area between Sarayburnu and Üsküdar under the Bosphorus Strait As the JV Lead, OC Global has been providing overall consulting services, including: Actual Project Works The Bosphorus Crossing (BC1) including construction of the immersed tube tunnel, bored tunnels on both sides and 4 new stations. Basic design Preparation of tender documents Project management plan Quality assurance system Safety policy Contract management Pre-qualification questionnaire and evaluation criteria Pre-qualification evaluation report Tender assistance, with documents including evaluation criteria Technical study reports Construction scheduling Special assistant to Employer related to funding arrangements Construction supervision and operations management The Project consists of 3 construction packages, namely The Upgrading of the Commuter Rail (CR1) including installation of a third track on surface and full upgrading of existing tracks and stations, new signaling system, communication system, fare collection system, operations control center, etc. Procurement of New Rolling Stock (CR2) including introduction of 44 units of 10 car trains Marmaray tunnel officially opened on 29 Oct 2013, the Turkish Republic's 90th anniversary. The Ottoman's dream of 150 years ago was realized with Marmaray link between Europe and Asia, uniting the two continents and the people. The 63 km connecting suburban lines are still under implementation.
