Falcon Club Members, Spring break begins on BGSU’s campus today. Traffic is headed out of town as many race for weather that doesn’t include snowflakes. A few of our spring teams will compete in the sun over the next week, while other programs play on with a vacant campus around them. The pause button of spring break also causes quick reflection on the last few weeks here at Bowling Green before the sprint toward May commencement. When we eventually look back at the 2012-­‐13 year, one of the most significant highlights will be the gift announcement made by Marge and Lee Meserve. Many of you know the Meserves as long-­‐time Falcon fans. Or perhaps you know Marge through her work at Wood County Hospital or her art at the Black Swamp Arts Festival. Lee is most commonly associated with his role as BGSU’s Faculty Athletic Representative, where he serves as a conduit between the department, our student-­‐athletes and the University and conference. All those “official” roles for Marge and Lee, though, pale when you look at the personal connections they have made with our student-­‐
athletes, coaches, staff, and BGSU alums. Neither Marge nor Lee hold a Bowling Green degree. That said, I’m not sure there are two people who feel more strongly about our institution, its mission and the students who are part of BGSU’s fabric. Beyond attending virtually every home sporting event, Marge and Lee are part of the daily lives of our student-­‐athletes. Apart from their financial generosity, Marge and Lee have made a lasting impact on generations of Bowling Green students. This makes their gift announcement even more remarkable. As you may have seen, the Meserve’s nearly $1 million gift will touch our student-­‐athletes and campus forever. Their endowed scholarships will benefit Athletics long-­‐ term, while Lee’s professorship in Biological Sciences appropriately links his name permanently to his department. They will also continue to show leadership as members of our inaugural Champions Circle class. And finally, we look forward to adding lights to Meserve Softball Field, a facility enhancement that will greatly aid our team and make the field more versatile in hosting non-­‐BGSU softball and youth baseball games. Many often reflect on school years based on wins and losses. In our world, that tells only part of the story. Much of our work is in building for the future. Marge and Lee Meserve took a moment two weeks ago to make sure BGSU’s future will be bright. A final note on another ‘behind the scenes’ item… Our Doyt Perry Stadium master planning project is underway. We have met with the architects twice and expect to work through the summer on a plan to secure the stadium for another five decades. While the planning is in the early stages, it can be summed up in two basic areas: one part of our efforts is identifying what needs to be fixed and repaired at The Doyt. The stadium is showing its nearly 50 years of age in certain spots and there is a fair amount of repair work to be done to avoid emergency-­‐like patches that we recently faced in the Ice Arena. Additionally, we are exploring a variety of fan improvements. At some point, we will seek your feedback on what is important to your game day experience. When the plan is complete, we will share the ideas with you and outline the fundraising plan needed to make The Doyt renovation a reality. As always, thank you for your support of our 18 sports and 425 student-­‐athletes. We appreciate all that you do and I look forward to seeing many of you in Cleveland for the MAC Basketball Tournaments or on the march to Joe Louis Arena! Roll Along! Member Spotlight
Larry and Linda Ensinger
Larry graduated from BGSU with
his bachelor’s degree in 1969
and his master’s in 1970. After
graduation, Larry became a school
teacher and taught for 12 years in
Niles, Michigan before making his
way back home to Bowling Green
to teach mathematics for Bowling
Green City Schools in 1982, where
he still teaches. Larry’s wife, Linda,
graduated from Indiana University
in 1980 and has been a dental
hygienist for the past 33 years. She
currently works for Dr. Kelley and Dr.
Thebes in Bowling Green.
How long have you been a
member of the Falcon Club, and
what is your favorite part about
being one?
We have been Falcon Club
Members for approximately 30
years. Being able to have access to
special parking, seating and ticket
selection for both the home and
away games is a major benefit for
being a member.
Why is it important for you to
support BGSU athletics?
We both love BGSU athletics! To
have such great facilities and to
recruit and compete at a Division
I level in athletics requires a great
deal of financial support.
What is one of your favorite memories
at a BGSU sporting event?
Attending Heinz Field in Pittsburgh
to watch BGSU defeat a highly
regarded ranked Pitt (#25) football
team back in 2008 in the season
opener was our favorite BGSU
sports moment.
Larry, being a BGSU graduate
what was your fondest memory
about being on campus?
During my years at BGSU, attending
basketball and football games were
my favorite things to do as a student.
From 1965-1970 the Falcons were
very good in both sports.
What would you like to share with
other Falcon Club members?
BGSU athletics needs our support!
We need more season ticket
holders. We need better attendance
at all BGSU events.

An emerging trend or story to watch:
I would say look for more integrative
technology at arenas. For example,
different companies are coming out with
apps allowing spectators to place an
order to the concession stand from the
seat and then receiving a text when their
order is ready.
What I like about...
My job:
Every day is different and every event or
client presents a different challenge to
overcome. I like that my job keeps me
on my toes.
Working in sports:
I like the team-work aspect of working
in sports. Everyone is in charge of a
different piece of the puzzle but we all
have to work together to achieve our
goal. This environment also creates
healthy competition between co-workers
and departments.
Bowling Green the city:
I love the small town charm of Bowling
Green. Everyone here is so friendly and
welcoming. I feel like I’ve lived here my
whole life.
Personal – My favorite…
Sporting event/experience:
Going to the NCAA tournament with
BGSU women’s volleyball this past
year was an amazing experience and
one I will never forget. But personally,
my favorite sporting experience was
beating #11 Wisconsin at home in the
Second Round of the NCAA volleyball
tournament to move on to the Sweet
16 my junior year. It was such an
amazing atmosphere!

I still have my very first jersey. My dad
coached peewee football when I was
little and since I went to every game (I

on a stuffed raccoon at my parent’s house!

MAC Match Play Title in
Thrilling Fashion
The BGSU men’s golf team rallied
back from a late deficit to capture
the Mid-American Conference Match
Play Championship, downing the
top-seeded Ball State Cardinals
3.5-2.5 in Dade City, Fla.
With the score tied at
2.0-2.0 things looked
bleak for the Orange and
Brown. Newcomer Ryan
Triller was “1 Down”, with
two holes remaining and
Joe Cooper was “1 Down”
heading to the 18th hole.
The Falcons needed a
halve and a win from
the duo to capture the
championship, because
a 3-3 tie would give the
win to Ball State (owned
tie breaker).
The comeback began
with Cooper recording a
birdie on the 18th hole,
picking up an
all-important halve
and, getting the score
to 2.5-2.5. The championship now
depended on Triller, who was
competing with the Falcons for the
first time in his career. Triller birdied
the 17th to get the match to all
square and then picked up a par on
the final hole to begin the celebration
for BGSU.
Prior to the
dramatic finish
Wes Gates (1
UP) picked up
a win, while
Charlie Olson
and Holden Pahr
each halved their
matches. Pahr’s
comeback was
one for the ages,
winning the last
three holes to get
the match back to
all square.
Joe Cooper
Overall the
Falcons went
10-3-5 in 18
individual matches.
Triller and Olson went 2-0-1, Pahr
was 1-0-2, Gates and Melvin were
2-1-0 and Cooper was 1-1-1. Last
season, in this same event the
Falcons finished last and picked up
only three individual wins.
BGSU will have some time to
celebrate this win as they won’t
return to action until March 4-5
when they compete in the Samford
Intercollegiate in Samford, Ala.

Indiana on Sept. 14. Accommodations will include travel with the team to Indiana, a hotel room, a VIP
Dinner with BGSU Director of Athletics Greg Christopher, and two tickets to the game.
