City Council votes properties to historic list status Unusual show is a wonderful
Campbell’s City Council
made some history itself when
it voted to add four historic
properties to the City’s Historic
Resource Inventory List at its
meeting on Tuesday, April 7.
In what was a City-initiated
plan to add five more historic
properties to the City’s Historic
Resource
Inventory
(HRI)
that recently made news with
a Historic Preservation Board
recommendation on January
28, and a Planning Commission
vote on February 24 to send
the proposal forward to the
City Council, the newly listed
properties bring the total number
of that special class of Campbell
historical properties up to 93.
The newly listed HRI
properties are 1740 Leigh
Avenue, 158 N. First Street, 73-75
N. First Street, and 99 S. Second
Street. A fifth property at 150
Shelley Avenue had made it all
the way through getting Planning
Commission approval before the
owners sent an opt-out letter on
March 24, removing the property
from consideration.
1740 Leigh Avenue, also
known as the “Castello House,”
is a Craftsman House built in
1928 that had cherry and peach
trees on a three acre ranch. 158
N. First Street is a circa 1900
one-and-a-half story Queen Anne
Cottage once owned by a piano
teacher named Miss Lawrence.
73-75 N. First Street is a circa
1900 Queen Anne Victorian
Cottage also called the M.M.
Green/Ben Austin House, which
is now a duplex. Finally, 99 S.
2nd Street is a 1920 Craftsman
Style California Bungalow built
for a man who worked at Hyde
Canning Co.
The
properties
join
Campbell’s Historic Resource
Inventory list of a select group
of properties, all of which have
varying degrees of historic
significance. There are 55
“Landmark
Properties”
in
Campbell that the City Council
has determined have special
aesthetic, architectural, cultural,
engineering, or historical value
or interest, such as specific
properties like Ainsley House
and the Campbell Community
Center, and properties in the Alice
Avenue Historic District.
The next level of historic
properties are those such as these
four newly listed ones on the
“Historic Resource Inventory”
that
have
been
deemed
significant to Campbell’s history,
architecture, archaeology, and
culture, but are not designated as
Landmark Property or found in a
historic district.
The City has also long had
a list of “Potential Additions to
the Historic Resource Inventory
List.” There were 54 of these
properties which had all been
reviewed and recommended
for the HRI, but had not moved
forward to being listed for
reasons such as changes made to

the homes, not meeting historic
criteria, owners who have asked
to not be listed, and owners who
are willing to be listed but are on
hold for now. These properties,
which have all been screened as
eligible, need approval by City
Council to get on the list.
A list of 211 potential HRI
properties was surveyed back
in the 1980s and 1990s. In the
intervening years, 13 have been
demolished, but once a property
is on this list it stays on it for
future possible listing. Historic
Preservation Board members
have gone over the list every year,
and for the last three or four years
they have been systematically
analyzing it and trying to see if
they can get any more property
owners to agree to be listed. This
was the fourth and last pass at all
the homes left on the list.
While some cities “list”
historic properties without owner
agreement, Campbell allows
owners to “opt out” of having their
property listed. Usually Campbell
has more “opt outs” than “opt
ins.” However, members of the
City Council discussed a problem
with the “opt out” approach that
has some new buyers unaware
that their home is already listed,
because some sellers may not
disclose it during the sale, which
can cause expenses and delays
for new owners getting a property
opted-out by appeal.

Tabard Theater opened the
Bay Area premiere of “Violet” last weekend. It will play at the
Theatre on San Pedro Square
through May 3. It just recently
closed on Broadway with Sutton
Foster in the title role and it is
quite a coup for Tabard to secure
the rights so quickly. This play/
musical deals with a search to
cure an external wound, not
realizing that the inner pain is
what is most in need of healing. Director Jay Manley is fortunate
to have such a talented group of
players, led by Jocelyn Pickett in
the major role. She sings and acts
with commitment and has extra
inner energy that gives her star
quality.
She is abetted by Adrien
Gleason and Anthone Jackson
as her two male bus mates in
her travels to become healed. Both men can certainly sing and
interact with the leading lady in a
way that the director could not ask
for any better combination. They
are surrounded by a ensemble
of actors who play all of the
other roles and all are excellent,
especially Shawn Bender as the
Preacher and Ruth E. Stein in
various roles. All are very good,
especially when they sing as a
group. Kudos to James Creer in
first role as a Vocal Director. We
usually see him on stage.
I was certainly impressed
with the imaginative staging
by Mr. Manley. Not once did
I miss a full set and the scene
changes flowed without a hitch. I compliment the costumes,
lighting, and especially the
sound. Not a word or lyric was
lost. The orchestra, small as it
was, was all that was needed in
this venue. Music Director Sam
Cisneros kept the tempos flying to
keep up the pace in an otherwise
talky vehicle. I want to offer
a special shout out to Anaseini
Katoa in a strikingly gorgeous
purple dress. Her singing was
just super and she knows how to
sell a song. Also Juanita Harris as
the Gospel soloist in the second
act “Raise Me Up.” And such
energy from the ensemble. Wore
me out!
Tim Reynolds and Michael
Rhone are also very good as they
traverse various roles throughout
the show. Also watch out for
Ginger Hurley. She’s young and
she’s good. I am sure that she
has quite a future in musicals to
come.
This is something differentit is almost a play with music,
rather than the standard musical. Give it a look because once gone,
I don’t think it will be done again
by another group. And they
certainly won’t do it any better. For tickets, call 408-9790231.

students who won the CWCC Arts Competition. Kylie Kwok
from Branham High School won best in show for her portrait
photograph. Eva Blair is the girl from Westmont High School
who won nine awards in both the Art and 3D Design Categories.

Kim Louise Dr: The unknown person entered the victim’s vehicle and stole misc tools.
1200 block Camden Ave: A man climbed into an empty room after removing the screen. When confronted by an employee he became
aggressive. Fled prior to PD arrival but an officer located him by a
Starbucks. He had two warrants for his arrest.
2300 block S. Winchester Blvd: A man was reported as a subject
lying down in the bushes. Upon contact he was determined to be too
intoxicated to care for himself.
1200 block Erin Wy: The unknown suspect used the victim’s ID
to file a tax return.
200 block W. Hamilton Ave: Suspect allegedly pushed victim
during an argument.
Silacci @ Loyalton Dr: The victim reported that his parked vehicle had just been involved in a hit and run. The officer later located
the suspect sitting in a parked vehicle with front end damage. The recovered partial bumper piece was a match to the vehicle and suspect
was determined to be DUI.
W. Hamilton Ave: An unknown suspect drilled out the locks to
the laundry machines and stole approximately $200 in quarters.
400 block Darryl Drive: An unknown suspect used red and gold
spray paint to tag the walls of a business.
100 block Curtner Ave: An unknown suspects forced entry into
the victim’s storage unit and took various items.
1300 block Dell Ave: An unknown suspect stole the turbocharger
from the victim’s vehicle.

In her own words...
It was at Hoover Jr. High that I
first heard the word journalism.
I had done a “newspaper” in the
6th grade in Southern California
and I guess my mother picked
the classes I was to take and
journalism was one of them. The
teacher was a newly returned
veteran (this was in 1945)
whose wife was a supervisor
in the school district’s office,
which may have facilitated his
hiring. I have no idea about his
background but I do remember he
had roving hands. It never got out
of control, though, and I choose
to ignore it. He had me develop
a column in the paper called The
Corn is Green which I think might
have been intended to be funny,
but I never was a funny writer.
Fortunately for the readers, the
school paper was only printed a
few times a year, so no one was
harmed.
It was at this school that I
developed a real boyfriend. I
became friends with Barbara
“Bobbie” Tarlow (real name
Miller—she took her stepfather’s
name—he was a furrier in San
Jose) and was invited to a party
in Willow Glen. She was Jewish
and several Jewish kids were
there…and lots of “Christians”.
Marvin Levin and I were instantly
attracted to each other but I think
his parents, when it was revealed
that Ruppenthal may have been
German, and wasn’t Jewish,
persuaded him to ignore me. I was
pretty innocent in those days and
all I really DO remember was that
other kids would take the song
by Sally Howe
‘Besame Mucho’ and change it to
“Besame Marvin.”
It was at the end of the school
year in June, at a graduation
party that my stepfather, Fred H.
picked me up (I think from Ken
Langendorf’s house) and told
me that something serious had
happened and that I needed to
talk to my mother. I’m not sure
whether he told me in the car or
my mother told me when I got
home, but she had a telegram
telling her that my father had died.
I was immediately put on a bus
headed for Los Angeles. I have no
recollection of the trip or where I
stayed, only of the funeral, which
was awful. It was warm weather
and that was the last time in my
life that I ever really looked into
a casket. My father was a horrid
yellow color and the sight of him
made me break down. There was
also a gun salute at the graveside,
and it was awful. My grandfather,
Jacob Christian Ruppenthal and
my Uncle Lloyd Ruppenthal from
Kansas had taken possession of a
brand new car to make the drive
to California. In those days, you
“broke in” a new car and
apparently they had to drive 25
miles per hour for the first day or
two. After the funeral, they drove
me home to San Jose. I remember
they didn’t even come in to the
apartment (the one on South
Third Street that was later moved
across from Diridon Station), I
do remember my uncle gave me
a $20 bill and said to my mother,
“don’t worry, we’ll take care of

The early Campbell Family – leading states and shaping a country
The early Campbell family
from which Campbell’s founder
Benjamin Campbell came has
already proven to be full of
surprises. Last time we looked
at how its early generations
were settling Virginia frontiers
alongside some of the nation’s
most
prominent
founding
families, including the illustrious
Randolph family who were like
the Kennedy family of their
day and from whom Thomas
Jefferson hailed. They could
have rubbed elbows with famous
early Americans such as George
Washington and Daniel Boone.
Perhaps it’s not that
surprising, then, that coming
from a family with a history
of bold pioneers settling new
frontiers, Benjamin Campbell
settled Campbell. Interestingly,
Benjamin isn’t the only Campbell
to have settled a local town. Go
to nearby Saratoga, and there you
have the town his father William
settled. For most American
families, having even one town
founded by its ancestors would be
pretty unusual, and two would be
quite an accomplishment.
However, the Campbells
were seemingly never an average
American family. Amazingly, out
in Tennessee, there is yet another
town that got its start being
founded by still another member
of this very same family, and to
make it even more interesting,
that town started out with
the same name our Campbell
did, “Campbell Station.” That
Campbell Station was founded
by another descendant of the
ancestor of our Campbells,
“Black David” Campbell. Black
David’s youngest son, Colonel
David, born 1753, founded
Campbell Station in Tennessee,
which is now known as Farragut,
Tennessee.
High achieving seemed to
have been ingrained in the family.
Another descendant of “Black
David” Campbell was Governor
David Campbell of Virginia, born
1779, who held office from 18371840. His brother John Campbell
was the Treasurer of the United
States from 1829-1839. Governor
David Campbell’s wife Maria,
his cousin, was the daughter of
the Colonel David Campbell who
founded Farragut.
Another
member
of
the Campbell family whose
achievements kept him in the
national spotlight, was the nephew
of Governor David Campbell of
Virginia, and Colonel David’s
grandson,
William
Bowen
Campbell, who was born in 1807.
Like our Benjamin, he descended
from both “Black David” and
“White David” Campbell, the two
Campbell cousins who married
half-sisters and settled in Virginia
side by side. William Bowen
Campbell was our Campbell
founder Benjamin Campbell’s
second cousin once removed.
William lived with his Uncle
David, the Governor of Virginia,
who was his aunt’s husband
and also his cousin and mentor,
during his educational years.
They had a strong relationship,
and their letters to one another
about the Mexican War can still
be read today.
William Bowen Campbell
was the Governor of Tennessee
from 1851-53. He was also
a Brigadier General, a judge,
served four terms in Congress,
made a name for himself for
his courageous fighting in the
Seminole and Mexican wars,
along with popular fame for his
reported battle cry, “Boys, follow
me!” which he later used as a
campaign slogan, and he even
defended and advised President
Andrew Johnson during his
impeachment trial.
What’s especially interesting
about him is how his life was
repeatedly
entwined
with
President Abraham Lincoln and
Andrew Johnson, Lincoln’s
vice president. When William
Bowen Campbell didn’t run for
a second term as governor of
Tennessee, the person who won
his office was Andrew Johnson.
Johnson was then chosen because
of his position as governor to
be Abraham Lincoln’s vice
presidential running mate.
William Bowen Campbell
was made a Brigadier General
by Lincoln. However, when
he was recommended to be
Military Governor of Tennessee,
it was Andrew Johnson who was
appointed instead.
Later, when General George
B. McClellan ran against Lincoln
for his second term, McClellan
seriously considered choosing
William Bowen Campbell as
his vice presidential running
mate. Instead, he chose someone
else and lost. Had he ran with
William Bowen Campbell and
won, history could have been
very different for Lincoln and
America.
It’s fascinating to imagine the
interest our local Campbells, who
arrived in California in 1846, must
have taken in the doings of their
famous cousins. Had William
Bowen Campbell become Vice
President of the United States,
it would have certainly been a
matter of great interest to all
who knew the Campbells. Even
without attaining that second
highest national office, William
Bowen Campbell did so much
for the country and was so wellloved, that Fort Campbell, the
home of the 101st Airborne
Screaming Eagles, is named after
him.
The more we look into
Benjamin Campbell’s family
background, the more we can
see that his idea of having the
Southern Pacific Railroad stop
at his property as the basis of
forming a town, came from what
was clearly an inherited family
spark of natural leadership that
played a part in shaping not only
Campbell, but wider American
history.

Presentation on the Mission
Santa Clara manuscript
collections (1777-1851)

Three people from Santa
Clara University gave a fascinating
presentation of the Mission Santa
Clara manuscript collection at
the Martin Luther King Library
as part of the monthly. First
Wednesday’s series: this was a
multidisciplinary
presentation
involving an archivist, a historian
and a technical person involved
with digitizing the archives. The
goal is to make the documents
available to the public online.
Erin Louthen, the archivist
was the first speaker. She gave
the background story to the
collection. The collection was
not so much acquired as it was
“inherited.” Fr. Spearman (18991977) collected documents from
various places related to Mission
Santa Clara. This collection was
not widely known. People learned
of it by word of mouth. There
were 35 boxes of documents
which had to be translated and
categorized in 8 months. Enough
progress was made to extend the
length of the project.
Deborah
Oropeza,
the
historian gave a detailed account
of the content of the manuscripts.
The time period covered
ranged from 1777 to 1851. The
original Alta California Missions
were begun by the Franciscans.
Later authority of the missions
was transferred to the Jesuits.
Eventually the missions were
secularized. Some of the property
went into private hands. The
rich were not the only ones who
benefited from the secularization
of missions. One woman, who
had managed to turn her room
into a house, was able to gain
ownership of her dwelling along
with some land, by petitioning the
governor.
While the manuscripts were
written mostly in Old Spanish,
there some documents written in
Latin, English, Catalan, Italian, or
French.
The documents covered
various
subjects
including
conversion of the local people,
health care, how to process
food, recipes, music and current
events. There is no such thing as
a pure culture. The local Native
Americans were influenced by
the Spanish. As a result the Native
Americans changed their houses
from mostly reed to a mixture
of reed roofing with adobe
brick walls. The Spanish were
in turn influenced by the Native
Americans. Local food along
with utensils found their way
into mission manuscript recipes.
Mixing of cultural artifacts was
not unique to California. During
Japan’s of period trade with
Europe in the 1500’s, samurai
warlords adopted Spanish armor
and
Portuguese
matchlock
muskets to their armies
Three things which caught
this writer’s attention was the
mention of a music documents,
the instructions on health care and
the news of Russia’s victory over
Napoleon. That music book may
be of interest to music scholars
and those who do re-creations
of early music works The
documents on health care may be
of interest to those with a medical
background, such as a retired
physician, I know of. It would be
interesting to hear his perspective
on medicine of today compares
to medicine of the Mission era.
The health care advice in the
documents served two purposes:
the physical health of the locals
and combating superstition. While
the medicine of the time may
seem primitive, to us moderns,
keep in mind science books of the
West were highly prized even by
the Japanese during their period
of “isolation” (1615-1853). The
mention of Russia’s victory of
Napoleon shows that the people
in California were not isolated
from current events. While travel
may have been slower, news did
get around. Contrary to what
some may think globalization
did NOT begin in the 100 years
ago. It’s just that things move at a
faster pace nowadays.
Tom Farrell, the Digital
Initiatives
librarian,
talked
about the putting the documents
online. While it would be nice
to have every document online,
the funding for that goal is not
currently available. One has to
define the target audience. The
three groups of people the online
project is aiming for: researchers,
people with an interest in
California history or those with
an interest in general knowledge,
such as how to press olive oil
in mission times. This speaker
discussed some of the technical
aspect to the digitizing process.
The goal of putting these
documents
online
involved
people from different disciplines.
The presentation approached the
topic from different angles. Tech
enthusiasts may find the process
of digitizing the most interesting;
archivists may find the process of
lending structure to the project to
be of interest; while history buffs,
like me, find the various details
of life in the past to be the item
of interest. In conclusion this
subject could appeal to a diversity
of people. Hopefully more people
will take notice of this project.

will be on Beethoven’s use as a
propaganda tool during World

Finger Lakes’ wine pioneer
Hermann Wiemer released his
first wine 35 years ago. While
his wines helped the New York
region gain critical acclaim, he
never curried much favor with
local winemakers. And he had
little patience for collegiality. In a
1985 interview with the New York
Times, he described most Finger
Lakes wine as “rubber hose”
quality.
Things
have
certainly
changed. Today, consumers
everywhere consider Finger
Lakes Riesling to be on par with
the best offerings from Germany
and Austria. Serious oenophiles
recognize that other wines from
the region show tremendous
potential. And ironically, the
region’s winemakers credit the
collaborative
spirit Wiemer
shunned for the surge in quality. Indeed, it’s a struggle to
get vintners there to talk about
their own wines. Virtually every
Finger Lakes winemaker is
more interested in promoting
the industry as a whole -- and
praising colleagues -- than talking
about himself.
“With a very few exceptions,
the region is characterized
by a very non-competitive
atmosphere, where we all
want to work together to make
exceptional wines,” explained
Peter Bell, the winemaker at
Fox Run Vineyards, in a recent
interview. Bell should know; he’ll
celebrate his 20th Finger Lakes
harvest this summer.

were Juan Villareal, Ferrari engine
and chassis expert extraordinaire,
who owns Grand Prix Motors
and his technical assistant, Chris
Negron. Juan and Chris arrived
in a one-owner 1967 Series 1 1/2
XKE convertible which has been
in storage for years and whose
owner was Western Movie star
William Bryant.

continued operation of an existing free-standing wireless telecommunications facility on property
on property located at 1675 S. Winchester Boulevard in the P-F (Public Facility) Zoning District.

Public Hearing to consider the application of Sequoia Equities for a Modification
(PLN2014-253) to a previous Site Approval (S 72-44) to alter the parking configuration of the La
Valencia apartment community to restore the required number of parking spaces and a Variance
(PLN2014-254) to allow use of reduced parking stall dimensions, on property located at 350 Budd
Avenue in the R-3 (Multiple-Family Residential) Zoning District. Staff is recommending that this
project be deemed Categorically Exempt under CEQA.

Public Hearing to consider the application of The Socialight for a Modification (PLN2015120) to a previous Site and Architectural Review Permit (S 98-17) to allow changes to the original
floor plan including obscuring one exterior storefront window on property located at 368 E.
Campbell Avenue in the C-3 (Central Business District) Zoning District. Staff is recommending that
this project be deemed Categorically Exempt under CEQA

and other mothers and select one of the best ways to live that day.
I have one of my motherÕs rocking chairs in my home where I can
sit and reflect. Instead of celebrating MotherÕs Day once a year,
you can do her much more honor and do yourself much more
good by honoring everyday her best ways.
James McGranham in 1885 wrote the following poem. See if you
can add to it with your own thoughts.
