ANNUAL REPORT 2008–2009 JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE OF LOS ANGELES Message from the President and the Executive Director The world at large, and here in Los Angeles, continued to face significant economic challenges in the last year. Through it all, JFS has remained steadfast in its commitment to provide a safety net for individuals and families of the greater Los Angeles community. JFS has built on its strengths to meet the ever-increasing need in our community in creative and sustainable ways. We continue to respond with food, shelter, counseling and other services for the most vulnerable, from homeless children and their families to the frail elderly. Whether visiting an ailing Holocaust survivor at home, volunteering at SOVA and providing nourishing groceries to those who are hungry, counseling spouses and children who suffer from violence in the home, or assisting seniors to remain physically and mentally fit, JFS staff and volunteers change lives for the better every day. We have advocated for our clients at City Hall, in the halls of Sacramento and in the nation’s Capitol, protecting clients’ resources and services and ensuring that our elected representatives understand the impact of their actions. And, when our friends and family have been in need, our staff has responded, providing the highest quality of care throughout our many programs. As a new year begins, we thank you, our family members—donors, volunteers, staff members, friends and partners—for helping us respond. With your generous support, we renew our commitment to strengthen individuals and families in need. We cannot do it without you. Jeff Nagler, Board President Paul S. Castro, JD, Chief Executive Officer 1 2 JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE OF LOS ANGELES ANNUAL REPORT 2008–2009 Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles (JFS) is an extended family that welcomes and serves people of all ages, ethnicities and religions with compassion and caring. ANGELES ANNUAL REPORT 2008–2009 HAPPENINGS Adult Fair In October of 2009, JFS and Westside M.A.P.S. hosted an “Active & Healthy Resource Fair for Older Adults” at the Iranian-American Jewish Center in West Hollywood. Nearly 500 seniors from across the city and valley, along with their family members and caregivers, attended the fair. Participants met more than 60 exhibitors who provided information about services and resources available for older adults, attended lectures and received free flue shots and health screenings. Photo by Curtis Gibbs Gleaning Photographer and documentary filmmaker Rick Nahmias was inspired to create a project to help provide locally-grown produce to those who struggle with issues related to poverty and hunger. Out of this idea grew “Food Forward,” which paired local produce growers with food pantries, including the JFS SOVA Community Food and Resource Program. Over the course of the year, “Food Forward” and its dedicated volunteers provided thousands of pounds of fresh fruit and vegetables that were distributed at each of our three food pantry locations. Young Leaders The JFS Young Leadership group has grown into an active source of support for the agency over the course of the last year. Professionals and students ages 20-40 have participated in a variety of volunteer, fundraising and networking events including “Martinis and Mitzvahs”, “A Day At Dodger Stadium” and “Chore Day at Park La Brea”. ANNUAL REPORT 2008–2009 JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE OF LOS ANGELES 7 Adopt-A-Family In 2009, the JFS Adopt-A-Family program provided a record breaking 120 families in need with gifts during the December holiday season. Donors, who included individuals, families and groups—such as book clubs and office teams, received a vignette and a wish list from a needy family. Gift cards, kitchen appliances, clothing, books and plenty of surprises made the holiday season a joyous one for many who would have otherwise gone without a celebration. For more information about the 2010 Adopt-A-Family program contact Sherri Kadovitz at 323 761-8800 ext 1217 or [email protected]. Yaran Iranian Peer Counseling Last year, through the generosity of the Jewish Community Foundation, JFS launched the Yaran Iranian Peer Counseling program which provides confidential, supportive services to the Iranian immigrant community. Yaran serves all Persian speaking individuals, and provides services including social service information and referral, family/mental health issues, domestic violence counseling, domestic violence counseling and substance abuse counseling. “Yaran is an innovative program specifically targeted to the Iranian community here in Los Angeles,” said Vivian Sauer, JFS Associate Executive Director. “Yaran not only provides services to the community, but uses a paraprofessional training model to help Iranian community peers to become counselors and advocates. By directly engaging community members, we will be able to develop clear strategies to overcome cultural barriers and better serve the Iranian community with needed social services.” For more information about Yaran, please call (818) 464-2864. Older Adult Fitness Centers Extending our commitment to helping older adults remain healthy and active, JFS opened its second older adult fitness center last year. Located in the JFS Valley Storefront Senior Center in North Hollywood, the program offers group wellness classes, ergonomically supportive cardio and strength training equipment, individualized workout plans and supervision by a trained professional staff. The JFS Eichenbaum Health and Fitness Center located adjacent to the JFS Freda Mohr Senior Center on Fairfax Ave., also continues to support the growing demand for fitness related services for older adults in the city. Toby wears her mother’s shawl that played a key role in her survival story. She holds the hand-made spoon given to her by a friend who was to care for her should her mother not make it. Sadly, the woman—nine months pregnant—was killed a week before liberation. Before the war, Toby’s mother had a store in fabrics and Of the 142 in Toby’s forest “family”, only 40 made it through beads. When the Russians entered their town in 1939, she the war. Only eight years old, Toby protested pleading, “But I can’t survive without you.” During a break in the killing, they emerged from their hiding place. Toby’s mother told her to run to the high foliage by the river. Though it was summertime, Toby’s mother put the soft grey coat on her daughter so she would meld into the grey light of dawn. Toby ran as she was instructed, taking refuge in a Jewish home where she devoured a dish of noodle kugel that had been prepared for the Tisha B’Av fast. In the morning, she saw a man pointing out the Jews’ hiding place to the German soldiers. Afraid of being discovered, Toby ran through the corn fields and into the forest. There, she found her starving, barefoot cousin and shared her meager food with him. Later on, they banded together with groups of other escapees, growing to 142 in number. Some young Jews became partisans and joined up with the Russians to bomb trains and disrupt the German army. Toby recalls cutting off her long hair and going without showers for two years as they learned to live as forest creatures. “I don’t give up—I always was a survivor,” Toby says with pride. When the Nazis occupied Hungary in 1944, John recalls, “All of us had to wear the yellow star when we went outside, and it was scary to have people notice you. Then the order came that Jews can live only in specially designated houses. We were among the fortunate ones who already lived in one of boys.” In 1956 the Soviet army put down the Hungarian Revolution and firebombed John’s apartment house that had been a center for the resistance. John decided to make his escape through Austria and joined a refugee group hosted by a small town in Pennsylvania, where he ultimately attended Penn State University. “The most difficult time for me was the decision to leave the star houses; however, in addition to my grandparents, an Hungary without telling my grandparents,” he explains. “I aunt and uncle with their two children also moved in with never had the opportunity to say a final goodbye.” us. They were marched to the main synagogue, where they spent the night, sleeping on the benches. John’s last memory of his mother is his sleeping in her lap. Afterwards, his mother was required to report to the brick factory, a gathering place for the deportation of Jewish women. He never saw her again. By late November, the Soviet Army had surrounded Budapest, and the Nazis prepared to deport or kill the last remnant of Jews in the city. John’s aunt, who worked at the Swedish Legation, found a hiding place for the boy at one of the Wallenberg “protected” houses. During the constant air raids, the Jews took shelter in the basement, each family living in a small area separated by hanging sheets. The building took a direct hit, but John survived to be liberated by the Russians. When his mother did not return, his aunt and uncle took responsibility for raising him with the help of his grandparents. 18 JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE OF LOS ANGELES ANNUAL REPORT 2008–2009 DONORS Carole & David Fiske Anita & Michael Melnick Rita Pynoos Lady’s Secret Foundation Sue & Ed Meltzer R.E.M. Looking for a shortcut in the forest, the children got lost and were captured by the Germans. First, they were taken to the ghetto, then to a series of concentration camps. Lisa became separated from all her sisters and brothers, only one of whom survived the war. After liberation, Lisa walked to Berlin, moving on through Italy and Cyprus and reached Palestine in 1946. She married a Jewish officer who had emigrated from Poland to Palestine in the ‘30s. Their first child was born in Jerusalem in 1947. Later they had another son and a daughter. The children were named for siblings who had died in the Holocaust. In the early 1950s Lisa learned that her parents had not died on the highway as she had believed. In fact, they had made it all the way to Siberia where her father was jailed for six months and died. Her mother was always mindful of the candlesticks that had been in her family for generations. She managed to hide them in a barrel and buried them in the ground. At war’s end, Lisa’s mother and sister moved many times, from Siberia to Afghanistan, back to Kovno and settled in Vilnius. The nearly 200 years old candlesticks now belong to Lisa’s daughter, the fifth generation to own them. Lacking the required ear for an instrument, she learned to crochet instead. Her skill making intricate doilies, like the one in her portrait, proved to be her life line. “I survived by many miracles,” Halina says philosophically. Finally, the Allied planes flying overhead were raining down “Life is like a puzzle. You form the pieces during your leaflets about liberation instead of bombs. Despite Halina was preparing to follow her sister to the Sorbonne bombardment, Halina made it through unscathed and when the war broke out. Exiled to the ghetto, it was continued on to neutral Sweden where one of the girls essential to find work deemed useful to the German had an older sister. “We were welcomed by helicopters and occupiers. Halina offered up her skilled hands to the the Swedish people were wonderful to us.” Halina joined Jewish-run Radziejewski factory which had been pressed her older sister in Paris where she also met her second into action making woolen hats and facemasks for husband, another survivor from Lodz. “It means a lot,” the German soldiers. They vowed to stick together as they approached the SS guards’ notorious “selection.” One girl, bearing an appendix scar which would have relegated her to the extermination line, was saved by a distraction caused by a plane flying overhead. But Halina’s husband was separated from her at Birkenau and she never saw him again. Halina’s skill coupled with pure luck provided a path to survival. Because of their small hands and keen eyesight, the girls were picked for the “montage” unit to work on the intricate clockworks for time bombs at the Krupp factory in Berlin. Other slave laborers worked in dye cutting and lost fingers; or in the galvanization factories and were poisoned by the foul air. Halina felt lucky to be assigned the fine work. The factory conditions were deplorable but certainly better than in the camps. 30 JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE OF LOS ANGELES ANNUAL REPORT 2008–2009 Board of Directors Officers Jeffrey Nagler, President Ann Cutrow, Vice President Hilary Lottenberg, Vice President Arthur Laub, Vice President Marcie Zelikow, Vice President Dick Weiner, Treasurer Shana Passman, Secretary Paul S. Wasserman Carmit Zur Photography By: Barbara Mack Survivor Stories Written By: Jane Jelenko ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHY: In 2009, Barbara Mack, acclaimed local photographer and proud supporter of JFS, began a special project with members of JFS Café Europa, a social support group for survivors of the Holocaust. Through the photographs and the stories that accompany them, we become witness to the important accounts of the courageous individuals who were willing to revisit painful memories in the hope that history may never repeat itself. ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER: Barbara Mack is known for her evocative portraits depicting ordinary and famous people in an extraordinary light. A trained psychologist, she is particularly fascinated by workaday heroes, finding the humanity and depth in each person she photographs. Through the single lens of her Haselblad camera, she offers a contemplative view into the soul of her subject. In an increasingly digital age, she chooses to use black and white film and the classic gelatin silver print technique to create a feeling of stopped time, serenity and beauty. Ms. Mack has contributed her talents to a variety of non-profit and civic organizations in addition to Jewish Family Service, including the Los Angeles Fire Department, American Jewish University, Jewish World Watch and Hope Net. Among the famous people she has photographed are former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, British Prime Ministers Sir John Majors and Tony Blair, Dahlia Rabin, Madeleine Albright, Walter Cronkite, Anderson Cooper and Muhammad Ali. She has taught a photography class for senior citizens at the Israel Levin Senior Center of Jewish Family Service. Her photographs have been exhibited at the Louis Stern Gallery and the Los Angeles Firefighters Museum. She has served on the Board of the Photographic Arts Council of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Ms. Mack Special Thanks to John Gordon, Noah Taubman, Jordan Passman, Jennifer R. Levitt, Sherri G. Kadivitz and Elinor Marks-Gordon for their contributions to the Café Europa photography project.
