This year’s Looking into the Crystal Ball fundraiser was bigger and better than ever. th
On the evening of January 8 , the Selby Library was brimming with positive energy, laughter, music, continuous entertainment, outstanding food sampling, and enlightening exhibits for almost 700 happy attendees. Over two dozen local food vendors generously contributed tastings of their signature dishes. Psychics, spiritual intuitive readers, art/writer exhibitors and over 30 on-‐stage and roving entertainers filled the library’s dramatic rotunda with their talents and skills. This event has become an annual downtown highlight, known as the “The People’s Gala,”—a great value for such an affordable ticket price. The Friends thank all of the donors, volunteers, sponsors, supporters, vendors, artists, performers, and exhibitors whose th
generosity made the event such a success. Mark your calendar for the 6 annual Crystal Ball on January 14, 2015. We look forward to seeing you again. Kenney DeCamp Kenney DeCamp

The 2014 PROGRAM of BOOKS & COFFEE
st
This season, 1 Vice President and Board Chair Charlotte Ryan has coordinated a series of prolific biographies and memoirs as a theme. April 8 Woody Allen on Woody Allen The Filmmaker shares his inspirations, anxieties, and frustrations in a self-‐portrait that goes behind the scenes of his films, glimpses of his Brooklyn childhood, and considers his opinions on a range of topics from jazz to New York City. Reviewed by Gus Mollasis, researcher, host and co-‐producer of the PBS series, Diamonds Along the Highway and host/writer of “At the Movies,” a live weekly TV show. 10:30 am inside Selby Library’s Jack J. Geldbart Auditorium, enjoy a compelling end to this season’s series. Book Review Runaway—by Alice Munro This is a collection of stories by the masterful Canadian short-‐story writer and Nobel Prize winner, Alice Munro. The title story is one of the best and one of the richest in its characterization and laser-‐like portrayal of the relationships between Carla, her husband, Clark, and their neighbor, Sylvia. Carla and Clark are experiencing difficulties on many levels. Munro asks us look at the complexities in the relationships among the three characters and to ask “Who runs away and why?” We also wonder about the significance and symbolism of Carla’s lost pet goat. Munro’s words need close reading to extract the full meaning and the subtext such as in the sentence Clark utters to Carla, using her name at the end, which infuses his statement to his wife with a darker, more intense tone. The next three stories revolve around Juliet, her mother, and h er daughter and take us through unexpected turns, suppressed, yet strong emotions, troubled relationships (again), and sadness and loss. All of the stories are connected by Munro’s passion about people, their warts and complexities. The themes of chance, b etrayal, and life’s “tricks” are present throughout, yet the meaning is often not revealed to us until the last page or two. If you want to experience a writer who always places human n ature at the center of her tales, read this or any book by Alice Munro. It has been said that she can depict an entire life span in 60 pages or less and she does it with searing, (sometimes disturbing) observations and perceptions. Read it with a friend. You’ll want to discuss it. Alice Blueglass, Friends Board Member The Friends of the Selby Library congratulates Alice Rau, B est Friend m ember of Selby Public Library and longtime supporter, who was recently honored with a Schoenbaum Humanitarian Award at the 2014 Glitz at the Ritz -‐Carlton. Giving back to the community was ingrained in her by her family, and she consistently demonstrates that through her volunteerism and philanthropy. Alice exemplifies this award because of her “caring spirit and dedication to improving the life of others.” 3 Vol. XXXXXV • Issue 13 • Spring 2014 • Friends of Selby Public Library Newsletter • Sarasota, FL
th
th On February 14 & 15 , eager bargain hunters at Selby Library’s Geldbart Auditorium snatched up new, pre-‐owned, and once-‐
loved donated items including jewelry, collectibles, accessories, art, antiques and housewares. Some of the outstanding pieces included an antique wood birthing chair, Tiffany crystal, and original art. An array of designer handbags, Ferragamo and Cole Hahn shoes were the hit among many fashionistas. The Selby Friends Bookstore in tandem offered a huge book sale featuring rare/collectible titles and most other titles were reduced to half price. Many customers shopped both sale days…and then returned on Monday! Eclectic and stunning one-‐of-‐a-‐kind treasures and unique tomes, all at low prices, made this annual fundraising event once again, an outstanding success. Many thanks to the Friends Bookstore Volunteers, the Library Staff, the donors, the shoppers, and Friends Bookstore manager Alice who created the original concept in 2008 and has since organized each o f these events. Kudos again to Nat McCulloch, Friends Board member, for generously and thoughtfully funding the tasty lunches for the volunteers. This year, sale proceeds are swelling to over $7,300 to date as leftover treasures continue to sell in the Bookstore and gift showcases. Best yet, you can continue to shop in the Friends Bookstore year-‐round for not only books in every genre, but new and pre-‐loved jewelry, accessories, and other eye-‐catching objects for all ages.
