LOOKING into the CRYSTAL BALL, presented by Friends of the Selby Public Library, will be held
on January 14, 2015, 6 - 9 p.m. inside Selby Library. Be “wowed” at this 5th annual “People’s
Gala” that is a modest price for a variety of more than 30 continuous, quality performances,
intuitive readers, plus 50 exhibits for wellness, artists, authors, and specialists. Over two dozen
local restaurants will offer tasty samplings of their specialties. Cash Bars. This year’s event will
be bigger and better than ever! Proceeds support Selby Library’s youth programs at this casual
fundraiser and “friend-raiser,” at the low price of $25 in advance, $30 at door.

The Youth Department Thanks Friends of the Selby Public Library
SELBY LIBRARY HOSTS THE GIRL SCOUTS
On the night of October 10, Selby Public Library hosted its first Girl Scout sleepover event, “Scout
About the Library,” which attracted 130 girls in grades 2-5 to spend the night in the Library.
While they were here, they attended a live performance by the Jiggle Man, a highly popular
children’s comedian. They also earned “Making Friends,” “Scribe,” and “Computer Expert”
badges, and enjoyed a pizza dinner together. As the evening wound down, girls returned to the
Jack J. Geldbart Auditorium for old-fashioned storytelling by Youth Librarian Grace and Marilyn
Nykiforuk, Assistant Library Manager. The night ended with a movie and a snack. The young
scouts read library books as they fell asleep, and enjoyed breakfast together the following
morning. The program was such a blast, plans are already in the works to hold another Girl Scout
sleepover next year.
Our “Halloween Storytime Party” was a spooky success. Grace and JoAnne told stories, did
puppet shows, and danced the “Monster Boogie” with a large crowd of costumed kids! After that,
Halloween Party attendees trick-or-treated all around the Library, thanks to a generous donation
of Halloween candy from the Friends.
Upcoming programs include World of Reptiles, the ever-popular live animal show by reptile
expert John Storms. He will bring turtles, lizards, enormous snakes, and an alligator on
the afternoon of Monday, December 29, to show off in his characteristically energetic and
informative storytelling style. The following afternoon, due to the popularity of our “Creepy Cold
Porcelain Charms” craft project this Halloween, families are invited to drop in for winter charmmaking. Cold Porcelain is a clay-like substance made from common household products that
resembles porcelain once it air dries. Kids will let their imaginations run wild as they make original
pieces of art in miniature.
Young adults had fun in October sculpting Halloween ornaments from inexpensive, homemade
cold porcelain and making miniature trees from recycled newspaper. These creations are still on
display along with 33 monster portraits submitted by students of Sarasota High School, Venice

This past year the Friends has provided the Selby Public Library and the community with the funding
for hundreds of free programs and presentations for adults and children. In the upcoming new year
the Friends promises to provide the same caliber of quality and the astounding array of programs
is planned to be exceptional. We invite you to partake in these programs, and also thank all of the
members of Friends of the Selby Public Library donors and Bookstore patrons who have made this all
possible via their support and generosity.
The Looking into the Crystal Ball fundraiser on January 14th will be bigger and better than ever. This
5th annual event supports free youth programs at Selby Library and will surely “wow” the crowd.
Read about it in this issue. It’s very affordable and has become known as the “People’s Gala” because of the ticket price which includes an evening packed with continuous entertainment, intuitive
readers, and exhibits by artists and authors. Over two dozen local restaurants and food vendors will
offer delicious bites of their specialties. Tickets are now on sale in the Friends Bookstore.
Please read about all the upcoming programs offered, in the Selby Library, including the Books &
Coffee program presented by the Friends the 2nd Tuesdays through April. Also, the February 17th
event sponsored by Friends of the Selby Public Library will be a rare treat: Renowned Botanical artist
Olivia Marie Braida will give a presentation.
The volunteers of Selby Public Library will be saluted at a special holiday lunch this month presented
by the Friends. We are grateful for their time, expertise and dedication throughout the year and are
pleased to have the opportunity to show our gratitude.

School, Riverview High School and State College of Florida. Congratulations to all these students
whose imaginative images will haunt the teen space through November 21st. You may view an

show_2014/1 . Zombie Day was also lots of fun, with teens becoming zombies with help from their
make-up artist friends. We made zombie cookies and took photos of our cute and scary teenage
zombies, while peeking at scary YouTube videos.
We are requesting more creations for our Funny Film Challenge, for ages 13 and up. The idea is to
create a cartoon using free online animation sites or perhaps make a “sweded”* video or movie,
which will be screened at the Teen Center on December 18th. Cash prizes will be awarded for first
(Golden Carrot), second (Silver Turnip), and third (Bronze Potato) place.
In January the fun and learning continue with an Orion Spacecraft presentation by aeronautics
and Orion engineer Dr. Patrick Rodi, a humorous presentation by FST’s Kids Komedy Club, and a
superhero drawing/character creation workshop by Ringling Professor Mike White. Plus, aspiring
teen novel writers are invited to join our Teen Writers’ Book Club in January presented by novelist
Kate Thomas Wood.

Meet Some New Friends!
Lisa Schmitt, received an MBA in Accounting from the University of Texas at Austin and a BA in Economics
from Connecticut College. She spent her junior year studying abroad at the the University of Freiburg in
Germany, and is a certified public accountant with over 25 years experience in corporate tax, accounting,
and finance.
During her career as a tax professional, Lisa held various management positions with Price Waterhouse,
Goldman Sachs, and the San Diego Gas & Electric Company. She recently relocated from southern California
to Florida and enjoys the culture and lifestyle of downtown Sarasota. Lisa currently serves as director and
treasurer of the Regency House Condo Association. She enjoys travel, fitness, reading, and following the
stock market.
Richard H. Passman, PH.D., has a very distinguished and impressive career in clinical and child psychology
as Professor Emeritus, Psychology Department of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. As an author of
numerous professional research papers and presentations, he has been cited in many psychology textbooks
and journals. His research has received substantial coverage from national mass media. He served one summer as Guest Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology and another summer in the Department
of Medical Psychology at Justus-Liebig Universitaet in Giessen, Germany.
Dr. Passman was editorial consultant on dozens of research papers for scientific journals and funding
agencies as well as reviewer of psychology texts for publishers. He was an executive committee officer in
the Division of Developmental Psychology of the American Psychological Association and Chair of its
Fellow Committee (awarding the status of Fellow to psychologists who have made exceptional scientific or
scholarly contributions to the field of developmental psychology.)

MORE THAN FRIENDS... FOREVER
The Friends “Honorable Mention”
Jim & Tom Sweeney, in memory of their wonderful father James W Sweeney, have donated over 1,400 beautiful hardcover books and
750 CD’s. Their father was a graduate of the US Naval Academy, a successful business man, and a fun loving soul who loved reading
and music. Their hope is that the donation of books and CDs to Friends of the Selby Public Library Bookstore brings the same joy to others
as they did their father.
The Invention of Wings - by Sue Monk Kidd
This historical novel begins in Charleston, SC. in the early 1800’s. Two of the main characters are Sarah and Angelina
Grimke who were actual well-known abolitionists in the pre-civil war years, yet grew up with their family as slave owners.
We meet “Handful” (Hetty) and her mother, Charlotte who are owned by the Grimke family.
Young Hetty is given to Sarah for her 11th birthday and although Sarah tries to decline, her family will not accept this
refusal.
This begins the relationship between the two girls. Yet Sarah will always be the owner and Hetty will always be an item
on the household inventory. Sarah teaches Hetty to read and there are severe punishments for both girls for this infraction. Hetty is outspoken and energetic and comes to distrust white people due to the treatment to her mother and
herself. She and her mother harbor thoughts of freedom and their actions are sometimes nail biting experiences for us.
Sarah is a quiet young woman whose stuttering speech is halting often obstructing her ability to express her strong
feelings about granting freedom to slaves. This desire gains traction as her younger sister, Angelina, matures and
often becomes the passionate voice for the two sisters as they speak out publicly and write against slavery at every
opportunity. Antislavery issues become feminist issues, as well. We get a history lesson and a story here.
Some of these characters are portrayed more dynamically than others. Sometimes we want to yell “stop” at some
behaviors or push someone to take action. Throughout the story, we try to imagine how it will end believably.
Of interest, is the fact that the Grimke sisters played an important role in the abolition of slavery and in promoting
women’s rights.
Read it with a friend. You’ll want to discuss it.
