Mayor, Kenneth Gulley, and the Bessemer City Council

in part due to the dynamic business leadership in our
area but especially because of our location. Bessemer
is located with interstate highways on three sides of our
City with abundant infrastructure which includes two

supplies of both plus unlimited amounts of natural

On behalf of the City Council and myself, I am pleased and proud to welcome you to
the City of Bessemer! Indeed, we all have much to be proud of in Bessemer. We are a
thriving city, focused on creating a bright future, full of opportunities and ready to help
your family and business thrive. We are dedicated to your success and to the growth of
our diverse population, who maintain a strong faith, and an active business community
that makes Bessemer such a desirable place to live, work, and play. For over 125 years,
Bessemer has kept its amazing sense of history while encouraging progress.
Before being elected Mayor, I served on several City boards and commissions, and
became the first African-American Chairman of the Board for the Bessemer Area
Chamber of Commerce. I am proud to call Bessemer my home. I am sure you will
appreciate all our city has to offer as much as I do. I would ask you to look through this
magazine and whether you are a visitor or resident I assure you that you will gain an
insight and appreciation for Bessemer. We are ready...Are you?

MEET THE BESSEMER CITY COUNCIL
DISTRICT 1-DAVID VANCE
David Vance is serving in his first term
as representative for District 1. Vance is
a graduate of John Carroll High School
and Xavier University of New Orleans,
where he earned a Bachelor of Science
in Political Science.
DISTRICT 2-CHESTER W. PORTER
Chester W. Porter is serving in his first
term as representative for District 2.
Porter is a graduate of Hueytown High
School. He has attended Jefferson State
Community College and Jacksonville
State University. He also attended Real
Estate School at RealtySouth.
Vance is an eight year veteran of the
U.S. Army, a former state probation and
parole officer and served formerly as a YMCA Youth Program
Coordinator.
Porter is currently an Operations
Specialist in the Corporate Information
Systems for Coca Cola United.
His community involvement has included membership in the
NAACP, services on boards for Always Reaching Children
(ARC) and Neighborhood of Winners (NOW), and attending
church and neighborhood meetings. He also enjoys mentoring
youth.
His community involvement has included being an active
member of the Carver Civic League, founder of the 13th
Educational Enrichment Program (EEP) and an advisory board
member for the FBI Multicultural Board. He is a member of New
Pilgrim Baptist Church.

DISTRICT 3-SARAH BELCHER
She is a retired nurse having worked at
the Veteran’s Administration Hospital,
St. Vincent’s Hospital and the former Lloyd Noland Hospital in
Fairfield.
Belcher is a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church where
she is president of the Usher Board and works on various church
committees. She has a long record of community involvement
including having been a member and ambassador for the Bessemer
Chamber of Commerce and serving on boards of the Bessemer
Advocacy Center and the Red Cross, among others.

DISTRICT 4-DONNA THIGPEN
Thigpen is an active member of Canaan
Baptist Church on Morgan Road in Bessemer. Her community
involvement includes service with the Bessemer Chamber of
Commerce, Bessemer Board of Realtors, Birmingham Board of
Realtors, Birmingham Chapter of Women’s Council of Realtors
(president in 2011) and the Southeast Bessemer Neighborhood
Association.

DISTRICT 5-RON MARSHALL
Ron Marshall is serving in his first term
as representative for District 5 and is the
current Council President. Marshall is a
graduate of Wenonah High School and
the University of Alabama.
Marshall is owner and operator of Myriad
Communications Network Inc. and coowner of ABC Concessions and Party
Rentals. He has over 35 years of executive

Jesse Matthews is serving his fourth
term as representative for District 6.
Matthews is a graduate of Hueytown

(UAB).
He is currently employed by Alabama
Power Company.
His community involvement includes serving with the
Bessemer Chamber of Commerce and the Concerned Citizens
of Bessemer. He is also a member of New Bethlehem Baptist
Church where he serves as a deacon and youth advisor.
Matthews is currently serving on the Board of Directors for
the National League of Cities, the Executive Committee of
the Alabama League of Municipalities and the Alabama Black
Caucus of Local Elected Officials.

DISTRICT 7-CLEOPHUS KING
Cleophus King is serving in his first
term as the representative for District
7. King is the youngest person to be
elected to the Bessemer City Council
and is the current Council president
pro-tem.
King is a product of the Bessemer
City Schools System and is currently
enrolled in the University of Phoenix,
where he is majoring in Business Management. He is a licensed
funeral director.
His community involvement includes serving as a member of
Bessemer Citizens for Change, the NAACP, Brothers in Christ
and 100 Black Men. King is also president of the Bessemer
Library Board.

Donna Thigpen is serving her first term
as representative for District 4. Thigpen
is a graduate of Oak Grove High School
and attended Jefferson State Community
College and Bessemer State Community
College, now Lawson State’s Bessemer
Campus. She is a realtor with RE/MAX
Advantage in McCalla.
Marshall counts among his community involvement his service
as a board member for the Legacy YMCA in Bessemer and an
advisory board member for the American Red Cross.

The 2014 Board is a diverse group of business, civic and community
volunteers firmly working to make Bessemer a better place to live,
work, do business and grow. Each board member has made the
commitment to lead and direct the Chamber of Commerce and
to represent the full membership of the Chamber in every capacity

Are Ready
The Bessemer Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors
is a group of dedicated local volunteer leaders who are
always ready to serve as the vital public relations arm of
the Chamber, representing the Chamber at public events
and as the backbone of the Membership enhancement and
retention programs. They are available to help our business,
education, and civic groups with their public events.
Ambassadors are individuals who are motivated, enthusiastic,
and articulate. They are prepared to meet with visitors, local
businesses, and various forms of the media. Each volunteer
possesses excellent leadership qualities and represent
with pride the Chamber and their employing business.
Ambassadors make a daily commitment, promote Bessemer
with confidence, and invest their time in the area. Not only
their time but Ambassadors are ready with ideas, positive
outlooks, networking skills, and various individual talents.
They are a TEAM representing the best of Bessemer.
They are the key resource in extending hospitality in the
Bessemer area and are experienced in business, community,
and promotional arenas. In order to serve as an Ambassador,
the volunteer must be a member of the Chamber or employed
by a member business, meet minimum expectations, and be
ready to participate in the various Chamber programs and
events.
Annual goals of the Bessemer Chamber Ambassadors
include: sponsor PRIDE activities, support educational
efforts in local schools selecting two to directly support,
raise funds for scholarships, be personally involved in
networking at all Chamber

The Bessemer Area Chamber of Commerce stands ready to
aggressively work for the betterment of the southwestern Jefferson
county region. In our 92nd year, the chamber follows an annual
Plan of Action that addresses business issues, workforce concerns,
community needs, tourism development and other programs that
positively affect our region. Our organization is ready to receive
requests from businesses and individuals outside our area looking
for information on local businesses that offer a product or service.

HISTORY: Historic homes, museums and numerous
historic sites are close by and easy to get to for any one with a
historic interest. The Bessemer Hall of History and the historic
home trail stand ready to offer a look into our regions past.
Tannehill Ironworks Iron and Steel Museum make the Civil War
come alive as will the many Civil War plantation homes in the area.
Downtown Bessemer is a historic district with buildings dating
back to the 1800s including an original Carnegie Library (which
houses the Chamber of Commerce). History buffs can travel a
short distance to nearby Moundville State Park, the Birmingham
Civil Rights Museum, and the Vulcan statue.
DINING: The Bright Star and Bob Syke’s BBQ are our
longest serving dining options. Both are ready to feed you with
excellent cuisine in their own unique way. Outstanding food
from Southern cooking to Greek cuisine are available. Mexican,
Chinese, Italian, Greek, Korean, Middle Eastern and European
cuisine can all be enjoyed with just a short drive. There are
numerous down home cafes with outstanding Southern cooking
like fried chicken, grits, turnip greens, and on and on. You will be
hungry and the area restaurants are ready to make you remember
their food long after you try it.
SHOPPING:
Tannehill Colonial Promenade,
Letson Farms, The Summit, Hoover’s Galleria, all compliment
the historic downtown Bessemer business district with shopping
and retail outlets available. Exits 1 and 6 on I-459 and exit 108
on I-20/59 are bustling with retail activity and almost anything
you want to buy. Add to that the Hueytown and Hoover areas and
there is no shortage of shopping adventure ready for you. If you
are looking for out of the way retail shops they abound in northern
Bibb, eastern Tuscaloosa and northern Shelby Counties all just a
very short drive from Bessemer. Our retail businesses are open
and customer friendly, whatever you are ready for you will find.

The Marvel City
is Ready
to Make History...
school system, water works, electric company, and a health director
(which was very important). Construction of roads, houses,
churches, and businesses to meet the needs of the workers and the
new residents was started in earnest. The young town of Bessemer
also bragged of The Hotel Montezuma; dismantled and shipped by
rail to Bessemer, this building was actually the Mexican Exhibit at
the1884-1885 New Orleans Exposition. DeBardeleben even had
the forethought to care for future generations by establishing a park
in the downtown area. Today, an original Viquesney Dough Boy
Statue which honors those who paid the ultimate price in World
War I is the focal point of DeBardeleben Park.
History
Nestled in the lower foothills of the Appalachian range lies Jones
Valley. Distributed throughout this area was black gold – no, not the
liquid kind, but rich seams of coal. The ingredients for an industrial
iron and steel making center, which would rival any in the United
States, were in close proximity - iron ore, coal, and limestone. Rail
lines crossed the area thereby providing easy movement of raw
materials, people, and finished products. A city called Birmingham
was emerging and blast furnaces were dotting the landscape.
Armed with a vision, a blueprint of a well laid out city to be called
Brooklyn, and investors with at least $100,000 each, Henry Fairchild
DeBardeleben (son-in-law of Alabama’s first millionaire Daniel
Pratt) embarked on his mission. On April 12, 1887 the first lots were
sold, totaling more than $400,000 by the close of the day—the City
of Bessemer was born! Henry had changed the name to something
more appropriate for iron making (Sir Henry Bessemer in England
had invented the Bessemer converter which changed the iron/steel
making process). By the end of the first year, Bessemer’s population
had grown so rapidly, the town was dubbed “The Marvel City”.
The town quickly established a functioning government, its own

A local newspaper of 1900 predicted that by the year 2000, the
city of Bessemer would stretch 100 miles. By the 1920s Bessemer
ranked the fourth largest city in Alabama and persisted in fulfilling
that earlier newspaper prediction.

Life continued in Bessemer. A search through old Bessemer
newspapers reiterates the fact that history repeats itself with each
generation. Newspapers reported good news, bad news, and a lot
of advertisement; today television and other electronic devices
provide the same type of information. Births, deaths, and weddings
occurred; the flu bug seemed to transcend the years; accidents
happened; elections were held; government officials were at odds;
businesses came and went.
Over the years, however, poor leadership at local, state, and national
levels brought recessions, depressions, and other economic woes
to Bessemer. Fires destroyed many early landmarks, while heavy
reliance on a few industries brought economic downturns as more
jobs were outsourced and demands for some products dwindled or
disappeared.
1900 provides timeless advice to the people of Bessemer for any

in the march of progress, that she knows no backward step, and
here can be found a generous people, proud of their city, their
progress, and anxious to let the world know of her success and the
enterprise of her people.

local Bessemer hospital has
seen many changes since it first
opened as Bessemer Memorial
in 1964.
In 1973, Medical West became part of
the Carraway system and was renamed
Bessemer Carraway. In 2002, the hospital
became UAB Medical West when it joined
the UAB Health System. Most recently,
the hospital became a healthcare authority
(2006) and is now known as Medical West,
an affiliate of the UAB Health System.

During the last one hundred and fifty years no community in the
southern part of the United States has relied more on industrial
production than the Birmingham-Bessemer Alabama region.
It truly has been the lifeblood for growth for the entire region.
And to a lesser degree that is still true however there has been
great diversification of the workforce in recent years. Currently
the strongest industrial and distribution growth numbers are
in the West Jefferson County/Bessemer area. This growth
is based on a number factors including: many available sites,
existing buildings, utilities on site, great transportation access,
a high quality work force, excellent labor-management relations
with existing industries, very reasonable cost of doing business
and most importantly very pro-business oriented governments.
There are presently thirteen industrial/business parks located
within ten miles of each other in the Bessemer area. The parks
range in size from 9 acres to 740 acres and are very diversified,
and eleven of these parks are owned by private owners or by
the city of Bessemer and have space available for upscale office
operations, warehouse-distribution facilities and heavy and light
manufacturing. Many of the parks have rail access.
In addition, the Jefferson County Economic Development
Authority (JCEIDA) maintains and operates two large parks in
the Bessemer area. The JCEIDA properties, known as Jeff Met, are
first class operations that have a high quality clientele. Companies
such as Home Depot, Mercedes Benz, Wells Fargo and Blue
Cross-Blue Shield call Jeff Met home. Of the two JCEIDA parks,
Jeff Met Lakeshore is primarily an office oriented data center
site with approximately 120 acres available for development.

The other education shining light in western Jefferson County is
ITT Technical Institute located at Exit 6 on I-459. It is a jewel
in our economic development recruitment package. The faculty
