Issue 37 October to December 2011
TFH NEWS Issue No 37 October - December 2011 Incorporating the TFH Diary. BROKEN BRITAIN: Prayer is the answer! Liverpool New Year Bible Conference For the past twenty years, a number of the Christian Fellowships around Merseyside have met annually over the New Year holiday for a Bible conference. Guest speakers have included David Pawson and Gbile Akanni. The venue has been the Christian Fellowship School(CFS) in Overbury Street L7. This year we will be meeting again in the CFS from Thursday evening 29th December. 7.30pm until Sunday 1st January. (For full details see the TFH diary) On site parking will be available. Day sessions (Friday and Saturday only) start at 10.00 and will include a question and answer panel. Gladstones book shop will provide a wide range of devotional and study literature. Our topic will be ‘Ephesians: A letter to the 21st Century Church.’ There will be nine sessions, all using selected passages from the Ephesian Epistle, and the speakers this year will be drawn from local leaders. There will be refreshment breaks between sessions. We would like to extend a warm welcome to all across Merseyside. For more information: contact Dick Hayes on 0151 932 0086. Motivating Men’s Conference with Mark Stibbe Churches in North Liverpool who meet for prayer monthly are sponsoring the second Motivating Men’s event on Saturday December 3rd at Kingsway Christian Centre, Waterloo. Bootle Elim, Formby CF, Emmanuel Baptist, Old Roan Baptist, The Well and Kingsway CF have invited Mark Stibbe to be the speaker this year. The day starts at 9.30am and lunch is provided. An open meeting for everyone is at 7.00pm. Mark Stibbe was the vicar St Andrews, Chorleywood. The church grew to over 800 under his ministry. Mark started ministering on Spiritual Fathers as he saw a need in the church for a clear understanding of our heavenly Father’s love for us. As a result his ministry was requested from churches in other countries and he now leads a ministry called ‘The Father’s House Trust’. Mark was adopted himself, he recognises that many believers carry an orphan spirit and do not see God as a Father who has a plan for their lives, An offering will be taken at both meetings to cover costs. This is a ticketed event and tickets can be obtained from the churches listed. LONG LANE CHURCH MOVE We are a Marshalls installer offering a 10 year guarantee backed by Marshalls on all Marshalls product installations. We are a professional landscaping company covering all of the Northwest including Merseyside, Lancashire and Cheshire. Flexible discounts for our TFH readers! Changes are afoot at Long Lane Church, Garston. Over the past four years they have seen a slow but steady increase in those worshipping together on Sunday mornings. After much thought and prayer, a door has opened up for them to meet in the local school from the first Sunday of October. This will affect the morning services only and all other activities will continue as normal, including the evening service, at Long Lane. Pastor Nick Johnson says, ‘Please pray with us as we make this challenging move to ESLA (Enterprise South Liverpool Academy) and more especially that this move would have an impact for the gospel in our neighbourhood, and in our City.’ www.longlane.org Editorial Policy TFH News is published by Together for The Harvest, a Company Limited by Guarantee (Registration Number 4711412) and registered Charity (Charity Number 1098123) TFH News is intended to report on how the church across the Mersey Region is working together and bringing good news to the community. The trip served to remind me of the many ways that we are blessed in the UK. Although the Prime Minister has described our nation as sick, and many communities seem ‘broken’, we still enjoy a stable legal system, with reasonably accountable authorities. Our liberty to share our faith in Jesus, the risen Saviour is valuable! As the family in Sri Lanka wrestled with their court and jail system, one thought which surfaced in my mind was: “If we don’t stand up for this man of God, who would we stand up for?” This is a challenge to all of us: Who would we stand up for in a crisis? Can we aspire to even better relationships than we already have? We talk about being in unity, about partnership and loving one another. The book of Hebrews challenges us to ‘encourage one another, and all the more as we see The Day approaching’. Jesus will return, the days are getting more challenging, let’s look for new ways to work together and encourage one another as we see the Day approaching. BLESSING, CURSE OR CO-INCIDENCE? God’s Word: a gift that is not just for Christmas! At United Christian Broadcasters (UCB), we are helping to change lives for good by the power of God’s Word and bringing hope to our hurting nation. We are doing this through radio, TV, a prayer telephone service and different publications, all of which aim to encourage people in their daily walk with God. To help us bring hope this Christmas and beyond, consider buying your gifts through UCB2GO.CO.UK. Not only do we sell great Christian books, Bibles and music, but all the profits go straight back into the ministry…straight back into spreading God’s Word throughout our nation! So your gift of a CD for your dad this Christmas helps to keep UCB radio playing and bringing God’s Word directly into people’s lives. Buying the latest Joyce Meyer book for your sister will help us to deliver daily words of encouragement through The Word For Today devotional. All your purchases really do make a difference, so this Christmas consider helping UCB to change lives for good by the power of God’s Word and get your gifts through UCB2GO.CO.UK. For more information about the ministry of UCB please visit www.ucb.co.uk Hatikvah Film Trust is pleased to announce the showing of the first documentary in the trilogy of Blessing, Curse or Co-incidence, ‘Israel – The Womb of the Kingdom Of God on Earth, God’s purpose to save the world and man’s attempts to thwart it,’ “Blessing, Curse or Co-incidence?” is a trilogy of documentaries presented by Lance Lambert. He examines the Lord’s purpose for the redemption of mankind and the eradication of evil from the earth and looks at the destiny of Israel and the Jewish people, and particularly His Messiah, in the establishment of the Kingdom of God on earth. At the same time the films chart the fate of nations, empires and even individual people who oppose the purposes of God, and especially those who come against His people Israel in doing so and look at spiritual root of the world’s longest hatred, anti-Semitism. Other participants include Malcolm Hedding, Chuck Cohen, Dr Jack Hayford and Michael Cohen. Lance Lambert Lance Lambert Volumes 2 and 3 are currently in production and will be progressively released over the next two or three years. “Blessing, Curse or Co-incidence?” is produced and directed for Hatikvah Film Trust by Award-winning filmmaker Hugh Kitson. Showing on 28th October 2011 at Hope Hall, New Ferry CH62 1BQ. at 7.30pm and on 19th November at Kingsway Christian Fellowship, Waterloo, at 7.30pm. Following the outbreak of violence across the nation, churches and groups organised prayer gatherings. A number of churches across the Diocese of Liverpool opened following the riots, to give communities the opportunity for quiet time and to pray for those affected by violence taking place across the country. Many churches opened for private prayer, and some organised prayer sessions. Bishop Richard Blackburn, Suffragan Bishop of Liverpool said in support, ‘I am greatly saddened by the events going on around the country and close to home. Our churches provide a source of strength and hope for communities.‘ Bishop James Jones, who is currently recovering from heart surgery, also said that he was praying for the city. In the Toxteth area, St Clements, St Philemon and St Bedes Church opened for several hours. Churches elsewhere in Liverpool also showed support by hosting prayer meetings for those communities affected, including in the Newsham Park/Kensington areas. Inspired by the praying women of the Bible such as Hannah who waited on God and got results, women of all ages, gathered from 10pm to 5am to stand in the gap and intercede for our nation. They prayed for single parents, young people, marriage, and the salvation of the people of Merseyside and the nation at large, among many other things. In his short exhortation titled “The Destiny Changing Prayer”, Pastor Ayo Akinsanya, Senior Pastor of Deeper Life, challenged the over 120 ladies gathered to see themselves as the destiny shapers of the hour. He said ‘The hour of prayer ahead of you can translate into a defining moment in retrospect because of the incredible things that happen when women pray. I am convinced that the next pages of history may well be written as God responds to this and similar prayer summits.’ At the end of the night, the ladies were challenged to continue praying. One of the ladies commented, ‘Who knows, we might just begin to see a move of God across our land that will transform our nation and our communities for the better!’ Rev John Beaney of St Bertaline’s Anglican Church in Runcorn called an emergency gathering to pray about the issues raised by the riots and for the people affected by them. One leader said, ‘Despite there being very little notice leaders and members from several churches in Runcorn responded. There was a powerful time of prayer, reflecting the seriousness of the matters being prayed for, and a great sense of unity between the people from a range of denominational and independent traditions.’ Summer Prayer School Hosted by the Community Watchmen Ministries team at the Hope Centre, Aintree throughout August, the organisers felt that the Summer Prayer School was a God idea. Sue Sinclair, who leads CWM said, ‘We found the timing was amazing as we were quickly and effectively able to mobilise thousands of people to pray for our communities during the riots.’ More than two hundred people registered from many different parts of the region and various parts of the Church including Anglicans, Catholics, Methodists, Baptists, Evangelicals, Charismatics and many others. Sue added, ‘It was a precious time together as we focussed on Jesus, growing more like Him so that our lives bring Him glory.’ There was timely teaching on Intimacy & Hearing from God, The Power of Praise & Worship in Prayer, Understanding Humility, Repentance & Unity and Watchmen Intercessors & Gatekeepers among the subjects taught. One church leader commented “I wouldn’t have missed these Prayer Schools for anything. The teaching was wonderful, but what was so special to me was that it was all about Jesus and honouring one another.’ Another leader wrote “We have really enjoyed it as a family and feel that God has been working in us and through us. It has been a truly life-changing experience.” If you want to know more about Prayer School contact Sue Sinclair [email protected] Broken Britain National Prayer Tour Following the recent riots, Premier Christian Media called Christians in major cities to join with local Church and Civic Leaders for the Broken Britain National Prayer Tour. They invited Graham Kendrick to lead the worship at each venue. The tour came to Liverpool at Liverpool Lighthouse on 20th September. There was packed auditorium as people from many different backgrounds and denominations came together to call on God. Local church leaders led corporate prayer before everyone got into small groups to pray further. The prayer time started with a time of repentance. Other topics were Those in Authority, including for the Queen and Government, Frontline Workers, including the police, probation, nurses doctors, Society including the family life, schools, the elderly, and finally Our Response as Christians Looking to the Future. There was a real sense of urgency as people got into groups to pray about the different topics. In between the prayer times, Graham Kendrick led the worship with passion, and several times sang bible verses to spontaneous music. Continuous Prayer 2011 The regular Prayer Briefings have continued to inform people about issues to pray for affecting our region and the nation. It is part of the Year of Continuous prayer’s vision to help all Christians to play a part in praying for people to discover the truth about Jesus. John Cavanagh writes, “The Together For The Harvest vision is to reach every man, woman and child in the city-region with the Gospel, and prayer is essential for this to happen.” Over one hundred church leaders and seventy individuals regularly receive the briefing by email. If you want to get a copy for yourself, email TFH on [email protected] During the summer months the prayer was covered by churches from Bootle and Toxteth, with the Christian Life Centre in Toxteth filling the gap for four weeks. Well done to them! In October the focus is on Wirral, and churches from there are praying over six weeks. For most of October and November there are at least two churches praying, with the Redeemed Christian Church’s four congregations filling four weeks. There have been lots of comments about how the Continuous Prayer has helped to promote unity between the churches. It was good to read the article in the last issue of TFH News about the Days of Prayer For Revival led by Bill Rodway. It is a reminder that there are many people praying for God to move in power in the region we live and worship in. The Year of Continuous Prayer is part of this. Its aims are to encourage grass-roots Christians to pray in their churches, homes and offices, and to link churches together so that between them the year is covered in prayer. John Cavanagh One Thousand Leaders To Carry The Torch For Wembley 2012 Over one thousand leaders from all over the UK, including a delegation from Liverpool, gathered in the Great Hall at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 17th September. They took up the challenge to ‘Be The Torch’ for UK revival by helping mobilise Christians across the British Isles to fill the stadium for a national day of prayer on 29th September 2012. At the GDOP London hosted Prayer Summit, leaders from all denominations, streams, networks and ethnic backgrounds responded with arms raised and widespread applause when convener Jonathan Oloyede commissioned them to come back to Wembley in 2012 bringing tens of thousands of praying believers. This memorable time of commissioning was the climax of an historic day when key national and international leaders shared from the platform including Gerald Coates, Colin Urquhart, evangelist Will Graham, grandson of Billy Graham and many others. Delegates from Africa, Australia, Europe and USA stood in prayer with teams from all over the UK. Over 2000 others watched the gathering LIVE via the GDOP London website. There was a tangible spirit of unity and hunger for national transformation as leaders joined hands together to pray for the nation. They all marvelled as a mighty bright rainbow arched right over the stadium just as the event ended. “The important thing from today is that all the leaders go away with that determination to come to a new place in God themselves, to impact those they lead, so that when we come back in a year’s time people have already met with God,” said Colin Urquhart founder of Kingdom Faith. He added: “They won’t just be carrying the torch but they’ll become the torch and from a great prayer gathering here revival fire can go out all over the nation.” The whole day ended with joyful celebration as Noel Robinson, Graham Kendrick, Lara Martin and Marilyn Figueroa led the freshly inspired leaders in rapturous praise and worship. THE VISION OF TOGETHER FOR THE HARVEST TFH is a movement of churches working together for the fulfilment of a vision. That vision is sharing in the common purpose of: 3. Transforming the City/Region by Christian people infiltrating, and Christian values permeating every part of the life of the region. 1. Reaching the Unchurched by making a credible presentation of the good news about Jesus Christ to every man, woman and child in the City Region leading to a fresh wave of disciple making in the context of local churches. You can support this vision by becoming a personal partner of TFH. Partners receive regular mailings and also get free membership of the Evangelical Alliance. Please contact the office if you want to know how to become a personal partner. 2. Growing the Church in both quality and quantity, where local churches take their place as part of the body of Christ through strong relationships and shared vision. Diocese supporting Christmas starts with Christ 2011 The Diocese of Liverpool has welcomed the unveiling of this year’s advertisement campaign to promote Christmas starting with Christ. The national advert, which has just been unveiled, gives a modern twist on the traditional nativity while cleverly reminding people that however they dress it up, Christmas starts with Christ. He is responsible for running Xcel Youth Ministries and the Progressive Social Inclusion Project (PSI), which is an award winning and highly successful social action project to help excluded and marginalised young men and women in Halton, Cheshire. Hope Corner is currently building a new centre to house the growing project and congregation. The new building will also house the Hope Corner Academy, the first independent church run school in Halton. Hope Corner Academy will be a church run alternative provision free school for struggling young people. Darrell is married to Rebekah and they have two young children, Benjamin and Lydia-Grace. He graduated at Mattersey Hall Bible College and received full ministerial status with Assemblies of God in 2009. He is also the author of Unreachable. Monday Monday marks the start of our Progressive Social Inclusion project (PSI) which runs Mon-Fri 8am-3pm. Each day begins with staff prayers at 8am. Since introducing prayer every morning we have seen a massive difference in our young people. Every day we have had the opportunity to meet their needs and share Jesus. Today I pre-recorded an interview with Wayne Clarke for BBC Merseyside about my new book, Unreachable. Tuesday Today I get to wear my climbing instructor’s hat and take our young people to Awesome Walls Climbing Centre in Stockport. Seeing these young people have an amazing time, grow in confidence and overcome their fears is an amazing blessing. Over lunch I shared my testimony with them all, praise God. One of the girls started telling part of my story that she had already heard from a young person we worked with 2 years ago! The day finishes with Hope Corner’s prayer meeting in the evening. Wednesday I took my little boy to play group this morning then spent some time with my one month old little girl. I love being a dad. The rest of the day is working on the plans and policies for our new school. Had a quick visit to the site of our new building, exciting times, just another £140,000 to raise but God is faithful. Wednesday evening is Hope Kids, our amazing children’s work headed up by Matthew Finch. First week back and the place is packed, we are having to start a waiting list for places! Thursday Centre day on the PSI, staff prayers at eight then we deliver drugs awareness and anger management training to some needy young people. We have an amazing staff team at Hope Corner. Danielle Burney, Matthew Finch and Rebekah Tunningley who deliver an amazing program of education, most importantly they all love God and our kids. Thursday evenings are all about training at Hope Corner, both practical and spiritual. I have just finished delivering our safeguarding training in conjunction with the Churches Child Protection Advisory Service (CCPAS). Now Pastor Mark Finch is beginning a series, taking Hope Corner to the next level. News from the Anglican Diocese This is the third year that the diocese, alongside partners from the Baptists, Methodists, URC, Salvation Army and Together for the Harvest, has joined in the national campaign. And all of us will be urging our churches to get involved again this year. Saturday This is all about family, a day spent with the most important people God has blessed me with. A special thank you has to go to my beautiful and amazing wife Rebekah. Have you noticed how Godly men (even ugly ones) are blessed with gorgeous wives! Saturday night is also Xcel Chill, the only under 18’s alcohol free bar in Halton, with the most amazing milkshakes! Sunday Morning off! Pastor Mark Finch brings an amazing and challenging message this morning after our worship team take us into God’s presence. Head home for a little lunch before driving off to South Yorkshire. Meet up with an old friend and great church leader in Rotherham before speaking twice at Edenthorpe Pentecostal Church in Doncaster, bringing a challenging message at the 6pm service titled ‘How BIG is your God’. Then I get to share my testimony at the ‘impact’ youth meeting at 8pm, God moves and the young people respond to Him. Back home by 11:30pm, quick sleep before back on the PSI on Monday, 8am for staff prayers. Love my job. For details of how you can get involved in the national campaign go to christmasstarts.org See our local site merseychristmas.co.uk for our local campaign. Annual Archbishop Blanch Lecture 23rd November 7-9pm Chapel, Liverpool Hope University Above: Darrell and his wife, Rebekah The Lecture will tie in with the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the publication of King James Bible. The lecture is free and open to all, but booking is essential. Friday The end of an exciting week on the PSI project, lives have been reached and the Gospel preached in both actions and words. At the end of each day on the PSI we have a staff meeting to discuss each young person and pray through issues. We end the week with an evaluation, celebrating what God has done and strengthening any weaknesses. Friday evening is all about Xcel, with our amazing team of youth leaders headed up by Tim Finch. It’s always a great night of God centred fun and worship (always with a disgusting, messy game from Mad Mike!) with the research that says 85% of people agree that Christmas should be called Christmas as we are still a Christian country. Yet knowledge of the Christmas story is low and we want to create opportunities for Christians to share that story. This media campaign aims to create awareness of the Christmas story and give us all permission and space to share the good news at Christmas. Please contact [email protected] or 0151 705 2120 to book a place. “Centrally, as before, we will aiming to get some quirky advertising on local radio” explained Stuart Haynes, the diocesan Media Manager “but we would encourage local churches to take part by funding the purchase of posters and taking part in our online work based on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/merseychristmas). Given the number of church buildings we have between us if we all displayed the same poster we would create a powerful witness across Merseyside.” Christmas is an important time for retailers with the big brands spending millions on promoting their goods. We cannot compete with their spending power but it is important to make sure that our message, the message of Jesus’s light that shines into the world, is given a chance to be heard. She is married to Rowan, who is Archbishop of Canterbury, and they have two children. Network of Networks The Church community in the Mersey region has a large and growing number of vibrant networks. There are geographical groupings of churches and also mission groups such as those working with the homeless, poverty reduction and those working in business. Together for the Harvest has been seeking to bring together a network of networks. Compassion Ministries Network A network of churches and groups that actively pursue opportunities to demonstrate God’s love through serving their communities, promoting best practice, stimulating ideas and connecting like-minded people with each other and with useful resources. If you have any stories of what your church or organisation is doing please contact: Joan Simmons e-mail: [email protected] or Telephone: 0151 263 0692 Words, Works and Wonders – South Liverpool Vineyard A few years ago the folk at South Liverpool Vinyard Church asked themselves what it would look like in their communities if they lived out the words of Jesus about being doers as well as hearers of his words. They set up focus groups to look at homeless outreach, domestic violence, and care for the elderly, where the group members looked to find those that were marginalised by the circumstances they found themselves in. After careful and prayerful research, which included going to organisations already dealing with these groups, one such group formed to pray regularly for those who had suffered domestic violence. Since those early days contacts were made and several ladies have had their houses decorated or gardens cleared. The aim is to help these women by showing them how to decorate quickly and cheaply. Free materials are provided on the understanding that as they learn skills they can pass them on and become contributors in a pool of people who have developed some decorating skills. The response is amazing. Many of the women have had their faith in people restored and have gone on to take part in some church social events, even attending services. Recently the group have heard of a charity willing to support the work by donating materials such as paint and wallpaper. If you would like to get involved please contact Joan 0151 263 0692 or email [email protected] Lodge Laners’ Enjoy an Afternoon of Fun in the Sun The Lodge Lane Lunch was championed by the young people from the L8 based Deeper Christian Life Ministry Project in partnership with Housing Associations LMH, LHT, Plus Dane Group and Cosmopolitan Housing. The DCLM Community Project is an initiative of the Deeper Life Bible Church on Solway Street East in Toxteth. The purpose of the event was to bring the community together to eat with their neighbours, rediscover old friendships and remember that there are many positive and exciting things about living and working in the Toxteth area, despite recent negative reports. It was held on an open field on Grierson Street on Sunday 4th September 2011 and about 400 people attended. Local businesses including Kebabish Original and Rehoboth Food Store made an appearance on the day and served up free food. Volunteers from Deeper Life Bible Church also cooked food from different countries of the world for all to sample. The event even got a mention on Roger Philips Radio Merseyside phone-in when a local resident called in to praise the generous portions of fabulous food that were provided free of charge, and said that the event was “absolutely great,” and “just brilliant.” There was a football penalty shoot-out contest for children and young people, along with the dancing competitions that attracted participants from four generations. The winners were given prizes. Professional quality pictures, taken and printed on site by the mobile library (Adult Learning Services) of the Liverpool City Council, were also a big hit. The organisers said, ‘All the feedback suggests that the Lodge Lane Lunch was a fabulous afternoon of food, music and fun. We might have to make it a regular thing; maybe annually for now!’ BUSINESS NETWORK ICCC Next Generation Conference The International Christian Chamber of Commerce is finalising plans to hold the Next Generation Conference in Liverpool from Monday 30th July to 2nd August 2012. The venue will be Crosby Lakeside Centre, where 40 delegates will be accommodated. The theme of the conference is ‘In Another Market Place’. The event is primarily to encourage the 18-35 age group to discover and fulfil their gifts and calling in the market place in an atmosphere of faith and fellowship. The ICCC will be working closely with the North West Christian Business Forum and the WAY Project (Kingsway Fellowship). There will be worship, prayer, teaching and break out seminars with opportunities to connect with Christians in business and entrepreneurship, politics, farming, creative media and education. It will be a three day event with interesting trips out or sport in the afternoon. Pam Coates, who has been asked by the ICCC Board to take an oversight role for the 18-35 age range in the UK said, “One of our aims is to encourage the next generation in their careers and ministries to move in spheres of influence and be agents for positive change in our culture and society”. Volunteers will be welcome to participate with hospitality and hosting, stewarding, music, publicity and administration. If you are interested in attending or helping, please contact Pam on 07890333325 or email [email protected] Profile: Chris Norman Interview by Jean Dobson Born in Chertsey, Surrey, Chris Norman is married to Rosie and has three children, Daisy, 7, Evie, 4 and four month old Eliza. With parents divorcing when he was 11, unsurprisingly Chris went slightly off the rails. At 14, dragged by a friend to the QPR football ground, Chris was surprised to find two unexpected “players” on the pitch - Cliff Richard and Luis Palau. It was a God-ordained moment. As Luis Palau spoke, Chris realised that there was someone who “got” him, and that night began his Christian journey. Ridiculed by friends for his sudden change of heart, Chris persevered, with a voracious appetite to know more about God, seeking answers to many unanswered questions. Taking a year out between school and university, Chris spent six months with YWAM, before studying sports science in Liverpool. Following an encounter with Pastor Nic Harding at a Christian Union event, Chris turned down a job opportunity in Guildford to work with Nic, teaching in schools on AIDS and HIV, a hot topic at the time. Fulltime employment with Frontline followed for nine years, working with church children. Burn out followed. A subsequent period in New Zealand saw a seed sown as Chris and Rosie visited an array of cafés and restaurants - maybe something of an equally high standard could be birthed in Liverpool? Just two and half years ago the dream became a reality as “The White Room” on Smithdown Road was transformed to become OOMOO. With a mixed client base and 30% Christian staff, the ethos of this successful venture is based on Kingdom principals – valuing staff and customers alike, sound business management and using ethically produced and traded goods. Chris’s enthusiasm is infectious – you can be guaranteed a real “feast” when you visit! Book Reviews Summer BARBECUES draw young people For those who are unaware of Youth Aflame, we are a non-denominational Christian organisation, pooling the resources of a number of churches to work with the young people who congregate in St Helens town centre in the evenings and weekends. These young people are the kind that most folk cross the road to avoid; they are the Skaters, Goths, BMX bikers, Emos, Indies, Punks and many of the other ‘tribes’ of young people generally characterized by their less-than-conventional style and dress sense. Through years of experience of working with them I know that they are a wonderfully diverse and colourful group of people, a close knit community, many with a deep spiritual longing. During the summer months we have held a series of barbeques on the back lawn of the Friends Meeting House in St Helens. These barbeques, being informal in nature are easy to organise with the Youth Aflame team working together, God’s wonderful sunshine, then letting God’s Grace flow through the rest of the afternoon. Tickets are now on sale for the Greatest Story Ever Told which will take place in the Well of the Cathedral from 17th to 19th October 2011. The Greatest Story Ever Told is an imaginative look at the Bible for the Facebook generation and gives the Bible story a fresh, modern twist. Administrator Joe Magill said, “It’s a complete summary of the Bible, although obviously not every single story. It’s not chronological; it works like a jigsaw. “It’s told through the experience of four teenagers whose homework task is discovering the Bible. All the scenes are acted out live, with videos on a big screen and lighting and sound effects. It was written in part by the teenagers themselves.” Artistic Director Annie Spiers said “This has been a totally different event to People sit around on the lawn, drift through, play their own music through the PA and eat free food in the company of each other and us Christian folk. Probably 100 to 150 young people join with us during the course of an afternoon. If I were to recount all of the conversations and encounters we have had during these afternoons I could easily fill this magazine. What I will say is that the spiritual yearning bubbling up has led to many of their number being baptized this year so far and the year’s not over yet! by Bill Johnson The event is in its second year and is going from strength to strength. Paula, one of We are challenged with questions such as are we making sandwiches Jesus didn’t ask for, have we made the transition from servant to friend? A way forward follows as the book progresses, expounding on the language of heaven, the value of mystery, and how to bring tomorrow into today. The book is well illustrated with encouraging testimonies. Inventions which come out of a homeless shelter for young The Greatest Story Ever Told is for school children in the daytimes, though this time aimed at Secondary Schools, years 7, 8 and 9. Schools can book for 10am or 1pm and even stay on for a workshop for the other half of the day related to various themes of the production. John Manwell people become patented, one of the pillars of society is impacted when the lifestyle of pastors in the church is recognised by a local school – they are invited in to speak to families who have lost control of the children in their own homes. Kingdom principles are introduced – problem solved. King David saw that rather than the sacrifice of bulls and goats, God was seeking a broken and contrite heart, 24-hour praise and worship became a reality in his day. And what of you and me, as we look over our communities and our nation? What do we see? Do we dare to dream? This book leaves the reader in no doubt! Jean Dobson ALBUM REVIEW FRESH MERCY Tickets for the evening performances are available at the Cathedral Shop or at www.cathedralshop.com Price £5. Groups discounts for ten people or more at £3 per person. Production not suitable for under 11s. by Elim Sound Having worked as a sound engineer at various events and conferences, with worship writers from Graham Kendrick to Tim Hughes, it is not a problem to critique the production, but how to rate the songs? To me praise and worship songs are either very good, ‘I could worship with this’, to very horrible. I am known for having a personal dislike of the schmaltz of Hillsongs. Well, this album has both. Having persevered through the bruising teen years of Darrell’s decline in his down to earth style, his encounter with God comes as a moving transition. He describes a dramatic personal change with tremendous authenticity. My fear when I began reading, was that the book might not convince the reader who has not met Darrell. However, it is thoroughly convincing. I recommend the book as an inspiration for those who wonder if God could change the ‘hard nuts’ on our streets. It could also certainly be a help to those caught in the world of drugs and crime: In a time when true hope is in demand, this book delivers! ISBN-13: 978-0768423990 Initially featuring as a chapter in “The Supernatural Power Of A Transformed Mind”, Bill Johnson was encouraged to write this book, his intent to encourage readers to get in touch with and live out the dreams and desires God has put in their hearts. produce after Narnia. This time we have been involved in far more challenging technical work like filming in silhouette, creating animations and Facebook style narrative. As ever we have involved many people from across the community and churches including 15 different choirs and around 100 people in prop making. “ two families that came to faith through the picnic in 2010 said, “I am so grateful for Gospel Picnic. Without it my family and I may not have found God.” Paula’s fiancé, Paul gave testimony to this and glorified God at the 2011 event and both families are now members of Mossley Hill Church. How do you review a book when you have met the author and heard some of his story before? I start by declaring my interest: I wanted to like this book and I began by hoping it would be excellent. There you go – you know my bias! DREAMING WITH GOD Joe Higgins Youth Aflame PICNIC IN THE PARK Sefton Park Gospel Picnic was held on 17th July this year and despite the (soaking) wet weather the party continued! The vision of this event was to provide a Christian presence in the park, to evangelise, to serve the community and to promote churches working together for the harvest of the Kingdom. Attractions included: live worship music, face painting, crafts and games, YFC cage football, a prayer tent, free light refreshments, an evangelism table providing information about local churches, tracts and Bibles....and an evangelist or two! by Darrell Tunningley Published by Sovereign World Ltd ISBN-13: 978-1852405892 Over the years I have read a number of stories written by people who have come out of drugs and violence or other damaged lifestyles. As I read the opening chapters of Darrell’s story I found the account of his slide down from recreational drugs to hardcore addiction was not an ‘easy read’. Darrell tells the story as it was. I didn’t enjoy the account of his steady slide downwards but I couldn’t help thinking how much people need to know about this dark side of life in our nation. The Greatest Story Ever Told In Another Place, the producers of February’s sell out Narnia Experience are bringing their latest large scale production to Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. Unreachable The event’s main organisers, Jennie Hardy and Fadzai Nyazika are keen to share this vision with other churches in Liverpool and feel the Lord is calling them to do so. Jennie said, “I felt the Lord compelling me through prayer to share this vision with churches around Liverpool and had different parks lain on my heart such as Anfield and Newsham Parks to name but a few. The vision is all about churches of all denominations working together and offering nurturing environments for ‘picnic fruit’ to enter.” The girls hope this event can be part of the larger revival coming to Liverpool! The album is designed to be the voice of a church network, the Elim group of churches, and the songs are very much designed to be used in a congregational setting. This being so, the lyrics are simple and singable but can be quite repetitive, as you would expect of congregational praise & worship. I question whether with that in mind this album would have been better recorded with a live congregation singing and the attendant energy and spirit (Holy) that this would bring. So to the songs - first out of the box is The Kingdom is Coming. I loved the retro introduction with the revival preacher voiceover (George Jeffries), straight into a very anthemic track, although maybe it needs more atmospheric production to match the intro. Holy Spirit is another anthem, definitely a song I could imagine singing in church. I Have Faith is a very upbeat poppy song with very catchy lyrics. To Behold You and Bless Your Name are great songs to lead into free/Spirit- led worship; and Bless Your Name has a lovely use of strings. Some of the songs are not so great, such as Let The Fire Fall, which from the title I expected to be epic but was a real disappointment, and You Are My Father which was a bit schmaltzy for me and felt like a Christian version of lift musak. If you like simple, congregational worship you should buy this album, but for me I would only download the standout tracks. Accelerating Community Engagement Across the Region The past 10 years have seen an explosion in community engagement initiatives by churches across Merseyside. In particular, since the success of Merseyfest, many people have been working with ever increasing effectiveness in bringing the goodness of God to their communities. Over recent years local networks have become more established and relationships have developed. The Good News of Jesus was active long before anyone invented the Big Society! “The training day on 19th November will bring together and inspire 200+ Christians who have some interest in community engagement and social action. The people who come will leave feeling equipped and mobilised to take action. They will be linked together as an ongoing community to share and develop thoughts. This event will take the various initiatives within the church community of Merseyside to a new level of co-operation and effectively focused action.” Together for the Harvest is working with Liverpool Lighthouse to facilitate a training day to support and encourage even more fruitful collaborations. On the 19th November churches and organisations are being encouraged to bring a team to be part of this important event. Describing the goals for the day, John Manwell said, “Whether just starting with an idea or if you are the regional expert we are bringing people together to accelerate the process.” TFH can report that church groups have already started signing up after hearing of the plans for the day. The day will include training, examples of what others have done, and excellent opportunities to link up with other like-minded people doing similar projects.
