Welcome to HKUST 2012 One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Challenge
Welcome to the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology “HKUST 2012 One Million
Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition”. During this competition 12 finalist teams selected by an
International Panel of Judges out of 89 very good proposals will present their ideas to a panel of
leading Hong Kong executives, professional investors and entrepreneurial academics.
Based on our success in organizing Entrepreneurship Competitions during the last 6 years, and
witnessing the growth of entrepreneurial activities in our region, we opened the competition to all
full-time and part-time students at all levels including post-grads, alumni, researchers, faculty and
staff from all academic departments within HKUST. While we did not limit the topics for
submission, we encouraged applicants to focus on the emerging areas such as nanotechnology,
renewable energy, environment, health, financial services and social enterprises. In addition, we
kept the total prize pool at the impressive level of HKD 1 million, composed of cash and in-kind
contributions, making this year’s Competition yet another remarkable activity for HKUST and for
Hong Kong.
The HKUST 2012 contest will begin with a “Trade Show” competition followed by an exciting
“Elevator Pitch” contest where each team delivers 90 second pitches of their business. The contest
will continue in two parallel “Business Plan” competition sessions, where two out of each group of
six teams will be selected for the “Funding Round” which will result in identifying the three
winners. The winning teams will be announced and their awards will be given during 18 May 2012
Award Dinner which will be held at the Bankers Club, HK.
Congratulations on being selected for the presentation rounds and we look forward to hosting you
and your team in this contest. We wish you a fruitful experience at this contest and all the best in
your entrepreneurial efforts. We believe that the greatest reward for contestants is the feedback
from and exposure to these leading Hong Kong executives and investors.
Sincerely,
Prof. Ali Beba
