Winding Through
Page Springs
Stacey Wittig
Vagabonding
Lulu Travel
After driving straight through high country
deserts near Sedona, I drop down into a hidden
dale of green. Page Springs is a small valley cut
into buff-colored limestone by Oak Creek, which
flows year round. Rotating my steering wheel to
hit the apex of the first tight turn, I follow the
freshly painted pavement that winds along the
riparian greenway. My old auto racing instincts
kick in. You can’t drive fast on Page Springs
Road, but the doglegs, declining radius turns, and
elevation changes remind me of some of my
favorite road racecourses.
The short, seven-and-a-half mile stretch of Page
Springs Road carries a load of Arizona history.
Here prehistoric people grew corn, beans and
squash. Homesteaders dug canals to water
orchards and fields of vegetables that fed Jerome’s
miners. Cowboys like the Girdners drove 100s of
head of cattle from here to higher pastures keeping these irrigated lands open for haymaking.
Today Girdner Trail is a favored hike, canals irrigate vineyards and the lush valley is home to three
wineries that are open to the public.
“Here we have plenty of access to ground
water,” says the wine pourer, and student of the
nearby Yavapai College viticulture program. I’ve
stopped at Page Springs Cellars for tastes of some
of the 35-60 different wines and vintages offered.
The comfortable tasting room is high above the
creek, and the winery is right under my feet.
Through a window, I look down at winemaker
Eric Glomski, as he tastes from barrels. Glomski
discovered this Page Springs hideaway while
mapping perennial waterways during ecological
studies. After working California wineries, he
returned to open Page Springs Cellars in 2004.
Now a prominent Arizona winemaker, he hosts
river cruises to European wine country.
Sitting in the lounge, I feel the California influence of Glomski’s experience: leather couches,
original art, Riedel stemware for club members
and trendy music. I nosh on local pecans, (I just
watched a local rancher carry in a bag), seasonal
ASPEN ANNIE’S
LANDSCAPING, INC
cheeses and toasted crostini. While tasting my
wine flight, I imagine seeing Bordeaux on the
Arizona Winemaker’s Cruise set for July 2017.
Too soon, it’s time to check into my accommodations, so I bid adieu to friendly pourers and drive a
short fifteen minutes to Sycamore Springs Guest
House.
“I’ve been driving between Sedona and
Cottonwood for eighteen years, and I never
dreamed this lush oasis was here,” I say excitedly
to innkeeper Shirley Millar. The beauty of shady
Mulberry trees, sloping greens fed by brook-like
irrigation canals and the peaceful symphony of
trilling birds, croaking frogs and chirping crickets
is stunning. Millar shows me around the secret
garden-like retreat built on historic ranchland.

OLDE TYME RADIO
by Jan Toth
As I look at trying to cut down my spending
and get rid of those annual subscriptions, I have
found one that I do NOT want to get rid of and
that is Sirius Radio! I have become addicted to
channel 148, Radio Classics. If you remember
the radio programs of old, this channel on Sirius
is a blast from the past. I can remember helping
my grandmother in the kitchen and listening to
the Fibber McGee and Molly show. This show
ran from 1935 to 1959 and even had a spin off,
The Great Gildersleeve (Throckmorton P.
Gildersleeve played by Harold Peary). Fibber
and Molly lived in a small mid-western town
called Wistful Vista where the couple interacted
with townspeople like Abigail Upington played
by Isabel Randolph and Mayor La Trivia along
with Foggy Williams played by Gale Gordon
who also played Principal Osgood Conklin on
Our Miss Brooks. Our Miss Brooks is also on
Radio Classics and I found out that all the characters and actors from the radio show were also
on the television show except for Mr. Boynton.
On the radio program he was played by Jeff
Chandler and then taken over by Robert
Rockwell. Rockwell carried the character over
to the TV show. Of course we all remember that
squeaky voiced teenager, Walter Denton who
was played on the radio show and television by
Richard Crenna. Other comedy programming
includes The Life of Riley, Edgar Bergen and
Charlie McCarthy, Red Skelton, Jack Benny,
The Bickersons, and Burns and Allen. Phil
Harris and Alice Faye is one of my favorite
couples on radio too.
For Western fans you can relieve the Wild
West with Gunsmoke starring William Conrad,
the Frontier Gentleman with John Dehner. Then
there is also Hopalong Cassidy, Fort Laramie,
and Have Gun Will Travel. Other regular characters in Gunsmoke were Chester Proudfoot,
played by Parley Baer from the Andy Griffith
Show; Kitty, played by Georgia Ellis; and Doc
Adams, played by Howard McNear, also from
the Andy Griffith Show.
The next Genre available is Suspense. In fact,
that is the name of one of the programs,
Suspense-Deadline at Dawn 1948; or Donovan’s
Brain also 1948. Some of the others are This is
the Mysterious Traveler, inviting you to join
me on another journey into the strange and
terrifying. I hope you will enjoy the trip, that it
will thrill you a little and chill you a little. So
settle back, get a good grip on your nerves and
be comfortable—if you can!, only the Shadow
Knows, The Whistler, Night Editor, Escape
which started each episode with “Tired Of The
Every Day Grind? Ever Dream of A Life Of
Romantic Adventure? Want To Get Away From
It All? We Offer You…Escape.” There was
also a Science Fiction Genre that included The
Strange Dr. Weird, and X-Minus One. And my
all-time favorite squeaking door The Inner
Sanctum were you hear stars like Richard
Widmark and Mercedes McCambridge, and
Vincent Price.
The Detective Genre includes Richard
Diamond, The Singing Detective played by
Dick Powell; and he also played Richard Rogue,
hard boiled, good looking and a bit of a wise
guy in Rogue’s Gallery. Dragnet starred Jack
Webb and Ben Alexander who were both in the
television series also. Gerald Mohr played
Raymond Chandler’s Phillip Marlowe, while
Dana Andrews starred as undercover informant
Matt Cvetic in “I was a Communist for The
FBI.” You can listen again to Mr. & Mrs. North,
Boston Blackie, and the Falcon. Nero Wolfe was
played at different times by J.B. Williams,
Santos Ortega, and Sidney Greenstreet. Archie,
his right hand man and secretary was played by
Elliott Lewis, Wally Mahr, Gerald Mohr, Herb
Ellis, Lamont Johnson and Harry Bartell. A
newspaper reporter was played by Frank
Lovejoy in Night Beat. Frank Lovejoy stars as
Randy Stone in these episodes from 1950.
Sheldon Leonard, Joan Banks, William Conrad,
Lurene Tuttle, Gerald Mohr, Betty Lou Gerson,
Bill Johnstone, and more portray the complex
characters in his intriguing adventures.
But my favorite was Yours Truly, Johnny
Dollar, the man with the action packed expense
account! He is a freelance insurance investigator based out of Hartford, Ct, but he travels all
over the U.S. and the world. On the air from
January 1948 to September 1962 there were 8
actors who played of Johnny Dollar. In fact,
Dick Powell was the first Johnny Dollar in the
audition episode, but movie commitments kept
him from continuing in the role. Then came
Charles Russell, Edmund O’Brian, John Lund,
Gerald Mohr, my favorite and the most popular,
Bob Bailey. Bob Bailey was Johnny Dollar from
1955 to 1960. After his departure Bob Readick
and Mandel Kramer finished off the last two
years of the program. Bailey also played detective George Valentine in Let George Do It.
One last note: The tales were all “transcribed” which I found out just means taped! If
you don’t have Sirius radio, check online. You
can get some on You-tube or stream from other
sites or buy cd of your favorites.

Fresh Sweet Corn Season
By Phyllis Schurz
It’ the time of the year again when fresh corn
is in abundance. I remember when we used to
wait until August for the good stuff. Then by
early September it tasted like something that
should be fed to horses. Now we live and eat in
a world of hybrids. The sweet corn lasts a
month longer and is still as sweet as it was in
early fall. And the picking no longer has to
wait until the corn is as high as an elephant’s
eye. We often see corn in the markets in early
July. The bioengineering all started because
corn needed to be shipped and still needed to
hold it’s sweetness until it arrived at the destination so people would buy it. But, or course
once the science was in place, how sweet is too
sweet? I think they have it just right.
So what is your favorite way to cook corn on
the cob? Here are a few of the most popular
ways:
1. The oldest and probably the most popular
way is to boil the corn.
Husk the corn and remove the silk (threads).
Drop the corn in boiling water. Cover the pot
and let it return to a boil. Turn off the heat and
keep it covered and it will be ready in 5 minutes.
2. Some people love to grill the corn and it
is very good but a little messy.
Keep the corn in the husks and only remove
the silks. Place the corn on the grill, close the
lid and grill for 15 to 20 minutes. Turn every 5
minutes. Remove the husk and lather on the
butter and enjoy.
3. Microwaving corn is also very popular
especially if you are in a hurry. Place 1 or 2
ears of unhusked corn in the microwave and
cook for 3 to 5 minutes. Remove husks and
enjoy.
4. Corn in the slow cooker was new to me
until I saw it on one of the never-ending cooking shows on T.V. Place the corn in foil with ½
tablespoon of butter and salt and pepper. Wrap
the corn tightly and place in the slow cooker on
LOW for 4-5 hours or High for 2 ½ hours. I
over-cooked the corn and was disappointed but
will try again.
I love soups and this recipe is one of my
favorites, maybe even in the top 5 recipes. It
makes a lot but freezes well. Have you ever
noticed when any recipe starts out with bacon it
usually ends up delicious?
Corn Chowder
4 tablespoons butter, ½ stick
1 whole onion, chopped
5 slices of bacon, cut into pieces
2 bell peppers, I like to use red and
green because it looks pretty
5 ears of corn, cut the kernel off
uncooked corn
¼ cup of flour
3 cups of chicken stock, one big container
2 cups of half and half
1 cup of Monterey Jack cheese, shredded
1 cup of cheddar cheese, shredded
¼ cup cooking sherry
When cutting the kernel off the uncooked
sweet corn try this. Work with the corn cob in
a bowl to catch the cut kernels. When you cut
from the top to the bottom there will be kernels
that seem to have a mind of their own and fly
all over your kitchen, so try this method. Start
cutting in the center of the cob and cut to the
bottom. When this is completed turn it over
and cut the rest of the corn off the cob which
will now be from the center to the bottom.
There won’t be as many run-away kernels this
way.
In a large pot cook the bacon pieces until
brown. Add the butter, onions and bell peppers
and sauté for 4-5 minutes stirring often. Now
add the corn, stir well and cook for another couple minutes. Sprinkle the flour on top of the
corn mixture and stir in and allow to thicken.
Slowly add the broth and blend. Stir in the half
and half and blend. I usually add the salt and
pepper now or any other spice you may like.
Simmer the mixture for 20 minutes and it will
thicken. Stir in the Monterey Jack and Cheddar
cheese and blend. Add the ¼ cup of sherry, or
if you feel like it, a ½ cup isn’t too much.
I found the recipe below in an old church
cookbook. I remember this casserole was on
most potluck tables when I was growing up in
the part of the world that produced a lot of corn.
I found a couple different versions of this
recipe, one called for sauté mushrooms to be
added and one called for a large diced onion to
be added. My preference is as it written below.
Corn Casserole
8 ears of corn, remove kernels from the cob
2 bell peppers, diced
1 cup heavy cream
Salt and pepper to taste
½ stick of butter
Cut the corn off the cobs. Use the method
described above. Mix the corn and bell pepper
together and blend in the cream. Yes, you
could use half and half - - -but why? Pour the
mixture into a 9 X 12 inch baking dish that you
have greased with most of the stick of butter.
Dot the top of the casserole with the remaining
butter. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes at 350
degrees.
Did You Know: Those pesky silks that we
work so hard to remove actually have a purpose? There is one silk per kernel and that is
how the kernel gets it’s nutrients from the sun.
I’ve printed this helpful hint before and have
had a request to repeat it. This is for all of us
that live at 7000 ft altitude and know the air
pressure does funny things in the kitchen. Have
you notice the refrigerated dough products such
as Crescent rolls, biscuits, pizza dough, seem to
explode when you open the can according to
the directions? The refrigerated dough gets
torn in places and cooks get frustrated. Try
this: Take a bottle opener the kind with a pointed end and gently prey off the silver end cap.
Once the silver end cap is released the dough
will shoot out the end of the can about 2 inches.
Now open according to the directions on the
can. The refrigerated dough will be intact. My
son who lives in Flagstaff taught me this trick.

Funny Jokes: Funnyjokes.com
Kid: “Papa, are you growing taller all the time?”
Father: “No, my child. Why do you ask?”
Kid: “Because the top of your head is poking up
through your hair.”
A guide, showing an old lady through the Zoo, took her to a cage
occupied by a kangaroo.“Here, madam,” he said, “we have a native
of Australia.”“Good gracious,” she replied, “and to think my sister
married one of them.”
“How many cigars do you smoke a day?”
“About ten.”
“What do they cost you?”
“Twenty cents a piece.”
“My, that’s two dollars a day. How long have you been smoking?”
“Thirty years.”
“Two dollars a day for thirty years is a lot of money.”
“Yes, it is.”
“Do you see that office building on the corner?”
“Yes.”
“If you had never smoked in your life you might own that
fine building.”
“Do you smoke?”
“No, never did.”
“Do you own that building?”
“No.”

The Single Senior
Single Grand Parenting
Can Be Exhausting
By Annie Weissman
I have three granddaughters and one on the way. They are the
joys of my life. Abby, who is nine, came
up for a week in the middle of July. We
had such fun going to the movies, crafting, reading, and swimming.
I had both Abby and her sister Savy,
age five, come up for four days during
the first week of August. Two is so much
more than one! They are quite wellbehaved. I also had an extra dog, Lilah,
whom I was dog sitting. The first day we
got up to Munds Park in time to go
swimming. Savy insisted on applying her
own sunscreen. Since they are both
excellent swimmers, it was an easy task
to keep an eye on them. I didn’t even
have to wear a bathing suit. Good thing,
because I put all my suits in one place at
the end of last summer and I have no
idea where that place is.
Their food choices and mine overlap
just a little. I made cheese crisps for dinner with celery and strawberries and
cherries on the side.
My dogs usually wake up about 5 or
5:30 in the morning. Lilah had spent the
night with Abby and Sparky and Louie
were with me and Savy in the queensized bed. Alas the dogs did not sleep
any later than usual. Abby is allowed to
stay behind, but Savy had to accompany
me on the morning walks. Abby got up
too, concerned about missing out on
some fun. The girls were thrilled to meet
a ginger cat on our walk. The cat was not
afraid of them or the dogs. We played
with the cat for a while and then continued on our way.
Tuesday mornings are when my writing group meets. Vy Armour was hosting, and she had a room set up for grandchildren, so the girls were content to
watch movies and do puzzles.
They were able to get in a short swim
before the siren went off. Savy was super
freaked out! I comforted her and she
calmed down. We all took showers and
then it was off to Joann Anderson’s to
make peanut butter and chocolate fudge.
They enjoyed the afternoon, especially
petting her three cats. Unfortunately, we
forgot to take the fudge down to the valley so I am
stuck eating
it all.
After
making
fudge, we
headed to
Flagstaff to
shop. Our
first stop
was Old
Annie’s grandkids
Navy where
making fudge with
I used
Joann
coupons and
discounts to
buy them quite a
few outfits. They
chose matching
dresses, too.
It was raining
very hard but we
managed to go to
their favorite
store: The Dollar
Store. We spent
quite a bit of time
there and I spent
sixty dollars! Ten
of that was my
Abby and Savy
stuff. They were
thrilled with the scarfs, headbands, pens,
flashlights, Chinese lanterns, cups to put
in the freezer to cool drinks, and much
more. That night they tried on the lady-
bug headband, broke out their light sticks
and bubbles, and Savy fooled around
with her flashlight.
The next morning. I took time to
drink my tea and read the newspapers.
Mr. Hotstuff joined me on my porch. The
girls amused themselves. Abby made
flowers on the top of pens using brightly
colored duct tape we’d bought the day
before at the Dollar Store. Savy colored
in a giant portrait of Tatiana, one of the
Disney princesses. Abby made a frame
from duct tape and put it up on the guest
room wall.
We drove down to Cliff Castle Casino
and bowled. From 9:30-11:30 on weekday mornings it’s only $1.50 a game and
$1.00 for shoe rentals. We played three
games. Abby won one game and Mr.
Hotstuff won two. We splurged on lunch
and milkshakes at Johnny Rockets and
then stopped by a farm to get corn.
I managed to trip on my way into the
house. I was bleeding on my arm, hand
and maybe my knees. I elected to jump
in the shower and wash off the dirt and
pebbles. Mr. Hotstuff was kind enough
to stick around to see if I was hurt
enough to go to an Urgent Care Center. I
wasn’t.
The rest of the afternoon Abby, Savy,
and I vegged out. We’d been going full
speed for several days and it was time to
rest. We did go to Patio in the Pines for
dinner and watched the rain.
On Thursday morning we packed and
picked up the cabin. I was hosting my
book club at ten. I loaded my car with all
of our gear and delivered Abby and Savy
to Joan Roff’s house. They love her and
enjoy spending time there. I rushed back
to set up for the meeting.
After we finished discussing The
Japanese Lover by Isabel Allende, I
straightened up. A neighbor from the valley was staying at my cabin for the weekend while I went back to Scottsdale. I
corralled the three dogs into the car
before picking up the girls from Joan’s.
As we started down the mountain,
disaster struck. One of the DVD players
died so they had to share one. Abby and
Savy had been on vacation with their
parents for the ten days before I picked
them up. So now it was two weeks of
being with each other 24/7. There was
bickering, crying, horseplay, and laughing all the way home. Of course we had
to stop at McDonald’s for lunch and a
bathroom break and for gas. I’ll admit I
was relieved when the movie we were
going to see wasn’t playing at a convenient time. I met my son Nick at Desert
Ridge to deliver the girls.
It was a wonderful four days but I was
mentally and physically exhausted even
though Abby and Savy are very well
behaved and able to amuse themselves
for long periods of time. If I was married,
there would have been another grandparent to share the joy and lavish attention
on both girls at one time. But then again,
I’m not sure I want to share my granddaughters full time. There’s such a short
period in their lives when they’re thrilled
to be with Granny Annie. Bu I do hope to
have each one up for a week next summer, separately, and a few days of them
together.

Down to Earth or High as the Sky
Wood Deck Vs. Hardscape Patio
Adding a deck or patio to your home not only increases your available living space, but can also increase
your home’s value up to 12%. The option you choose
will likely depend on your needs, space and budget.
Hardscape Patio
Pinewood News
Cost
•Patios are usually cheaper than decks dependent
upon: preparation, retaining walls, drainage, materials, and finishes.
Return on Investment/Value
•30 – 60% return on investment for a hardscape
patio
•Increases value of your home up to 12%
Maintenance/Lifespan
•Up to 25 years with power washing and occasional
resealing subject to climate/use
Wood Deck
Location
Flat terrain works best, however, with new retaining
wall and multi-terrace systems, patios can be
installed almost anywhere.
Benefits
•Incorporates landscaping and provides privacy
•Add additional features like fire pits, bbq’s, kitchens,
hot tubs
Materials
The surface of the patio is determined by its intended
use and aesthetics.
•Plain Concrete: brushed, acid-washed, and diamond
blade pattern cuts
•Stamped Concrete: pattern and color to mimic natural stone
•Pavers: concrete or clay brick available in many
styles/colors
•Stone: Travertine, Flagstone, Slate, Bluestone and
Limestone
Location/Type
•Platform:
built on level
lots attached
to single-level
dwellings
•Raised: raised
up to the
desired height
with joists –
usually has railings and stairs
•Multi-level:
series of decks
connected by stairways or walkways
Benefits
•Excellent views
•Outdoor living with a division from the natural
•Built over a variety of terrains
•No retaining walls necessary
Materials
•Composite and vinyl decking: resistant to insects,
splintering – more expensive, but less maintenance
than wood
•Wood decking: Pressure-treated pine and fir are
popular because of their low cost, availability and rot
resistance. Red cedar, redwood and tropical hardwoods are more durable and have no chemical treatments but are pricey and have a larger environmental
impact.
Cost
•Typically, woods decks cost twice as much as patios
dependent upon: location of the addition, size, materials, finishes, and additional amenities.
Return on Investment/Value
•80% return on investment for a wood deck
•Increases value of your home up to 10%
Maintenance/Lifespan
•Wood requires periodic sealing, staining and
replacement of railings/floor planks and if properly
cared for will last 15-20 years (7 if not)
•Engineered vinyl products and composites require
very little maintenance and can last 15-25 years
Considerations
•Capacity - weight
•Permit, property taxes, insurance
Creating useable space outdoors is one of the
smartest renovating decisions you can make. Both
decks and patios offer a positive return on your
investment and unlimited possibilities for entertaining, socializing, or simply relaxing in an outdoor
space.

Don't have a down payment in your checking account
for a new home, where else can I get it?
Depending on what type of loan you do and what type of occupancy you are stating, a down payment may vary. Sometimes it might be challenging to get the down
payment for a new home. Lenders allow gifts from family members as a viable
option to use. Primary homes and second homes allow gift funds from family members, but investment properties do not allow it. A family member can't be a long lost
2nd Cousin of another Mother, but a relative by blood, marriage, adoption or legal
guardianship.
Lenders allow a down payment to come from retirement funds, even a loan
against your assets. This might be a good option because usually the interest rate on
the loan is very low and the payments come out of your paychecks.
You can even sell personal belongings such as a car, artwork, ATV or anything of
value. But, keep in mind there will be an extensive paper trail of the sale. You usually need an appraisal on the item, bill of sale and proof of the funds.

Jeremy Schachter

Munds Park Community Watch
by Len Friedlund
There have been many articles over the past few years concerning several important items that all residents in Munds Park should be aware of
and following the Pinewood Fire Department (PFD) recommendations:
First, and most importantly, if you or someone in your home becomes
distressed with a possible medical issue, DO NOT DRIVE TO THE FIRE
STATION! Call 911 and the PFD responders will be there as fast as you
can drive to the station. There have been a couple of residents over the
past few years who have passed away at the back door of the station without giving the staff the chance to save them. Also, if the person with the
issue is driving himself, consider the possibility of an accident perhaps
injuring another driver if they were to pass out or become unable to control their vehicle.
Second, response to your home by either the PFD or the Coconino
County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) Deputies needs to be as quick as possible and if your home does not have easily identifiable house numbers,
especially at night, valuable time can be wasted searching for the right
address. The best numbers you can get are the green and white reflective
numbers that are available at the fire station FOR FREE!
Third, there is a program initiated by the PFD that will check, and
replace if necessary, your smoke alarms in the home. The incidence of
fatal house fires is reduced greatly by having working smoke alarms. Just
call the PFD at (928) 286-9885 and schedule a visit by some of the staff
to come up to your home and check it out
Fourth, and this is going to be one of our greatest concerns as we are
apparently escaping yet another summer without a wildfire threat, you
need to make your property fire safe by cleaning up the pine needles,
trimming trees, and perhaps removing some of them. Again, by calling
the PFD and scheduling an assessment which is free, find out what
actions are needed to get your property in a good condition to resist fire.
We hear all the time from the owners that they want their property to be
like the natural forest and so they don’t want to remove the dozens of
trees that are squeezed up to their house. You undoubtedly have been
reading in the papers that the Forest Services have changed their procedures the last few years and are letting wildfires burn out the underbrush
and smaller trees to prevent serious fires in the future just like the forests
have been doing themselves for centuries.
The next MPCW meeting will be on August 17th at 6:30pm at the PFD
and will occur every three months on the third Wednesday of the month.
Invited guests include the CCSO with Corporal Elano Sales, PFD Chief
John Welsch, Coconino County Public Works with Community Relations
Manager Marc Della Rocca, Deputy Director Mike Lopker, and Deputy
Director Lucinda Andreani, and District Three Supervisor Matt Ryan.
The Pinewood Property Owners’ Association (PPOA) supports the
MPCW program with funds to cover most of the costs associated with the
program. If you haven’t sent in your annual donation yet to the PPOA,
please consider the support they give us when you do. Your donations
may be mailed to PPOA, PO Box 18673, Munds Park, AZ 86017.

GIRLFRIENDS
Wilma Lentz
Our girlfriends are important at all stages of our lives,
Whether we be young or old, or mothers, daughters, wives.
Some girlfriends are our lifelong friends,
but life's a changing thing.
We never know from day to day just what tomorrow brings.
A girlfriend may be a woman who lives next door to you,
Who'll feed your dog when you're away,
bring soup when you've the flu.
Or she may be someone with whom you'll share a glass of wine,
Someone who listens to your woes, no matter what the time.
A girlfriend may be a woman who lives quite far away.
You may connect just once a year, but oh, so much to say!
Or she may be a friend you knew from school so long ago-You laugh and giggle over things that only you two know.
A girlfriend may be a woman who, when life has gone awry,
Is quick to lend her shoulder when you need a good long cry.
If you're lucky, she's a woman who really doesn't care
How much money you may have, your age or what you wear.
A girlfriend may be someone who is always on the go,
Or she may be a woman who just likes to take it slow.
She may be full of energy and enjoys a good long hike,
Or one who likes to pedal 'round the neighborhood on her bike.
A girlfriend may be a woman you hang out with at the gym,
Someone who will encourage you, whatever shape you're in.
Perhaps she is a woman who's always up for a fun time,
Or one who's sure to tell you when she thinks
you've "crossed the line".
A girlfriend may one from work who brightens up your day-When your job is getting difficult she knows just what to say.
Perhaps she is a woman who shares your political passion,
Or one who stands by her convictions,
no matter what the fashion.
Our girlfriends come from many varied, colorful walks of life.
Some have had a peaceful journey, some known a lot of strife.
Our girlfriends are a patchwork quilt of memories stored away,
A quilt we can curl up beneath on any given day.
I treasure all my girlfriends-- from my past they may be gone,
But for all the times we've shared, my memories linger on.
So here's to girlfriends then and now,
and those who're yet unknown,
For when I have my girlfriends, I know I'm not alone.

THINK BEFORE YOU ACT!
It only takes one spark on dry grass, leaves, branches or pine needles to start a
wildfire. Even live trees and brush are dry enough to easily ignite. Wildfires impact
recreation areas and may destroy homes and cabins, and threaten lives.
Chainsaws, dragging trailer safety chains, carelesssly tossed cigarettes, fireworks,
abandoned campfires, and discharge of firearms are all known causes of wildfire.
Warn others of potential dangers and behaviors that may start wildfires.

•Fire restrictions vary, but most mean that no open fires are allowed except in

except gas or propane camp stoves, some restrict all types of flame.
•In Arizona, many areas due to dry conditions will enter into fire restrictions in late
April or May and typically rescind those seasonal restrictions in September or
October. This is seasonally variable.

Lady Putters “Throwback Thursday” & “Christmas in July!”
Pinewood Country Club Lady Putters had a special day of putting. They
celebrated "Throwback Thursday" by dressing up in "Back in the Day"
clothes and hairdos. Our president displayed a board of pictures of the
ladies from the ages of 5-15 years. We had a ball trying to figure out who
they were! The decor for our breakfast meeting depicted "Christmas in
July". As you can see a great time was had by all!

BIG BERTHA
By Pam Keating
I’ll bet you think this is going to be a
golf story. It does start out with a golf
swing that caused Dave’s hamstring strain
in early June. He self-diagnosed the conJOSE L. SALAS &

pain, and his lack of ability to take a full

golf swing. He had to find out what could
replace the usual time spent and the enCALL: 928-637-5882
joyment he got from his four-times-aweek, eighteen-hole games.
He likes to read. He gets three newspapers daily. He enjoys a good book: a Harlan Coban, any Ann Rule true crime story,
an occasional biography. He enjoys old
videos too. His issue is all these time
fillers are sedentary. This, Dave is not. He
doesn’t sit for long even if intellectually
involved.
I don’t have this condition I can be immobile for hours. That’s part of why I
don’t bake.
But back to the Big Bertha story…
What Dave didn’t know was how to heal
his hamstring. Lots of friends said they’d
had similar injuries. Their advice differed
on how long it took to heal. They varied
on how to enhance healing and what interfered with healing. Dave needed to
know for sure. He had previously dealt
with an orthopedic drop–in clinic in
Flagstaff. He decided to get some real
medical advice.
When we arrived at noon on a Friday, I
was sure there would be a long, waitingroom line. That wasn’t so. We were
quickly signed in and led to a cubicle
which was quickly entered by a physician’s assistant. He verified Dave’s self-diA 501C3 tax exempt organization

screen and programs came up.
Dave’s an optimist and a cheap one at
that. He returned the next day with his
large SUV, paid his $6.50. That’s $8.00 less
his 15% military discount. He installed the
quite cumbersome, heavy, awkward apparatus on our porch. We lost lots of
front-porching space. I wasn’t the happiest of people. The deal was Dave had to
utilize her to keep me willing to wheedle
past her to my favorite chair. I named her
Big Bertha.
He googled and researched the model.
The multi -paged manual, with all the
bikes wonderful features described, appeared. There was even an extruded construction chart with all the possible
replacement parts numbered, if needed.
But not a word about the necessary electrical adaptor, its voltage or wattage. A
call to an 800 number to the manufacturer fortified with some little white lies
about how something got lost in a move
got him the missing information.
Back to the thrift store shopping. He
found an adaptor fairly close to voltage
and wattage for fifty cents. Neither of us
is too electrically gifted. We know the basics. Nothing happened when we connected both ends, one to the wall socket
and one to the machine port. We didn’t
know how to troubleshoot.
Our solution: invite an electrical engineer up for the next weekend. Being a
procedural soul, that fellow checked that
all wiring was live, all wires were solidly
affixed. There could be an issue where
the female wire joined its male counterpart. He wrapped the male peg with a
small tear of aluminum foil and Voila!
Beep! Hello! Big Bertha’s face came alive.
The screen popped on and all those
features in the manual arrived, all those
programs could be scrolled. She now
gives pedal resistance from one to
twenty. Believe me, ten is tough! She tells
you how far, how fast, how long, how
many calories you’ve gone and spent.
When you place your hands on her chinlike bar, she’ll let you know what your
heart rate is, providing proof you’re alive.
You can ask her for flats, or hills or
steep mountain grades. You can plug in
your CD player and her ears will pipe out
your tunes. She even has a fan for a
mouth with variable blower speeds to
keep you cool. Her eyes provide inspirational messages, like “Keep up the good
work.” and “Believe in yourself.” There’s a
water bottle holder on her neck. She’s got
it all.
Seven-dollar Big Bertha now permanently resides on our porch even though
she’s blocking a three-seated sofa from
use. There’ll be no more dancing there for
awhile. Dave’s leg repaired on the low
end of the weeks needed, thanks to his
actually using Bertha.
He lost the month of June in the golf
season. He now has an acceptable excuse
for lousy holes -lack of play.

Abineau Lodge Opens Coffee Bar
The Abineau Lodge dining room is now open to the public!
Mountainaire, Arizona May 20, 2016: The Abineau Lodge,
Mountainaire’s only bed and breakfast, is now serving espressos,
breakfast and lunch to the public. Located at 1080 Mountainaire
Road, just off I-17 at Exit 333, the Lodge has been serving
breakfasts to overnight guests since opening in 1997. Owner
Wendy White decided to open the dining room to the public this
year as a community gathering place. “We have such a unique and
comfortable location we want to share it with our neighbors, not
just out of town visitors. We’ve been preparing breakfasts for our
guests for 20 years and it’s a natural fit to expand that service to
locals too,” Wendy said.
The Abineau Lodge, formerly known as the Sled Dog Inn, opened
in 1997. The Lodge was built to blend into the natural environment and is situated next to Coconino National Forest in the community of Mountainaire, just south of Flagstaff, Arizona.
Originally operating as an outdoor adventure center, the Lodge
now operates as an event center, bed and breakfast, coffee shop
and wine bar.
The Coffee Shop is open from 6:30 am to 2 pm Wednesday
through Saturday and 7:30 am to 2 pm on Sunday. Wine and
cheese is available evenings from 5-8 pm. The dining room is
closed on Monday and Tuesday. No reservations are required.

Forty-nine Pinewood Country Club members and their guests
enjoyed a fun-filled day playing "Progressive" at the Card
Tournament held on Tuesday, August 2nd. Karen
Zintac was in charge of this year's tournament and did an
outstanding job of organizing every detail. Unfortunately, Karen
was unable to attend due to a sudden and unexpected death in her
family. Accolades to Lynn Kelly and Barbara Janes for their ability
to "ride with the tide", as they immediately took over and the
tournament progressed smoothly.
Barbara Janes oversaw the eight tables of six players,
distributing door prizes throughout the day. The tournament was
underway by 9:30, allowing time for one game of
“Progressive". A delightful buffet lunch of Asian chicken salad,
rolls, lemon bars, coffee and iced tea
was served at noon.
Players were happily surprised to learn the second game,
following lunch, had been paid for out of their entry fees.
Score cards were turned in and the winners announced.

You Will Know Me by Megan Abbott
Book Review by Vy Armour
Most of us are enjoying the 2016 Olympics and what
has more drama than Women’s Gymnastics? As we
watch these talented and skilled young ladies we can
only imagine the dedication and the hours they have
devoted to the sport that led them to their Olympic
dream. And as we observe their parents in the bleachers as they agonize over every event their daughters
participate in, we wonder how many sacrifices they
have made to bring these dreams to reality. We imagine each of their stories, behind the scenes, would be the making of a fascinating novel.
Megan Abbott, a New York Times best-selling author’s eighth novel, You
Will Know Me has a timely release as she tells the story of the Knox
family. Katie and Eric have dedicated their lives to their fifteen-year old
daughter, Devon, a gymnastics prodigy and Olympic hopeful. They have
made Devon the focus of their entire lives and Drew, the younger brother
is often pushed into the background. Devon is the star, the thoroughbred
of the family.
Even in the womb, Devon seemed like a natural gymnast. She kicked
her mother so hard she dislocated one of her ribs. At age three, she was
physically transformed due to an accident when she ran into a lawn
mower that cut off two of her toes. That’s when her parents enrolled her
in gymnastics and discovered she was a genius at it—fearless, powerful
and freakishly flexible.
The story is told from the mother, Katie’s, point of view. Katie, who
knows her daughter’s every knot and chord, and that gives her a false
sense of closeness, of know ability. That is the book’s eerie central
theme: You can’t know the people closest to you even if you spend your
days focused on the minute details of their bodies, rubbing out aching
muscles or adjusting leotards.
The story also digs deeply into the issue of personal sacrifice to achieve a
goal. Devon might be able to do something very few can do but does that
mean she has to give up a normal childhood and teen experience?
As if there were not enough drama on this Olympic stage setting amongst
the competitors as well as their “booster” parents, a crime is committed
that rocks their community. Handsome and popular Ryan, a regular and
beloved figure in the gym, is killed in a hit- and- run accident. What was
he doing, walking alone on a dangerous road late at night? Police are investigating and the “booster” moms have their own theory.
The novel’s real draw is not solving of this mystery but Katie’s realization that her life is not what she thought it was. Just as good gymnasts
seem to make their flips look as effortless as coin flips, so do good
writers like Abbott weave many themes into a story that cause us to turn
the page and most importantly, to examine our own beliefs.
As she has done in many of her other books, Abbott has the incredible
knack for putting us in the head of a conflicted character who has to face
up to some ugly truths. Woven throughout the story is a family drama, a
crime story and reflections on the real cost of the pursuit of excellence in
any endeavor.

IN HONOR OF
THE PURPLE HEARTS
By Dr. Mark Sexton
When the cry goes out you're always there
Our badge of courage you fearlessly wear
From the surviving wounded to the warrior giving it all
Our Purple Heart veterans have answered the call
Dating back to Washington through our current day
Those who have worn
THE BADGE OF MILITARY MERIT
have led the way
Like last year's Charles Keating the IVth
This band of heroes relentlessly goes forth
In pursuit of our freedom without ever a fear
these brave men and women protect us each year
and although this purple badge is the highest pursuit
You warriors true we can always recruit
The depth of what burns and has strengthened your soul
chisels in granite your pursuit of your goal
No enemy will arise or evil prevail
as you unstoppable champions carry the grail
So we gather today to applaud and give thanks
to the Purple Heart conquerors among our ranks
Put your hand to your heart and bow in honor their way
as we meet today for their special day
For those with us here and all those far apart
we give praise and admiration to the bearers of the Purple Heart
We know you'll never ask but we pledge our support
for you and your families who never fall short
With the stamina and the courage that your lives entail
We rest assured knowing our great country shall prevail
Thank you , stand proud and may God bless
You PURPLE HEART elite, you are America's best !

Birds of Munds Park #78
Who ARE These People?
by Margaret Dyekman
Steller. Say. Anna. Grace. Townsend.
Each of the names above is found in the names of one of the birds we find in Munds
Park. Steller Jay. Say’s Phoebe. Anna’s Hummingbird. Grace’s Warbler.
Townsend’s Warbler.
I personally prefer bird names that relate to what the bird looks like or area in which it
resides – for example, White-Breasted Nuthatch or Western Bluebird. But some lucky
people got to have a bird named after them, and there is a
little history behind each one.
The Steller Jay is the only jay found in Munds Park. It is
large and glossy blue and black, has a crested head, loves
peanuts, is noisy at times, and will nest near our homes –
at the top of a garage light fixture, for example. It will
rob other birds’ nests of both their eggs and young. Its
Steller’s Jay, courtesy of range is confined to the Western United States and it
Gordon Karre
likes coniferous and mixed forests. It was named after
the naturalist who discovered the bird, George Wilhelm
Steller, who is considered a pioneer of Alaska natural history. He died at age 37, most
likely of scurvy and fever, on an expedition, and several of the other animal species he
identified are already extinct.
Our Say’s Phoebe, a medium-sized flycatcher, is found mostly on the Pinewood Country Club golf course. This bird is named after Thomas Say, an American naturalist
who focused primarily on insects. He explored the Mississippi River and Rocky
Mountains. He died at the age of 47 from typhoid fever.
Anna’s Hummingbird was named after an Italian duchess, Anna De Belle Massena. A
naturalist named Rene Primevere Lesson named the bird after her in a time when
“collecting” new species was all the rage. Supposedly a specimen of the bird was
given to Lesson by John James Audubon, and Lesson, a French naturalist, named it
after the duchess.
I identified what I think was a Grace’s Warbler one afternoon in our front yard. I spent
a good 10 minutes watching it flit in the highest parts of the Ponderosa Pines and
ended up getting “warbler’s neck” after those 10 minutes. Grace’s Warbler was named
by Spencer Fullerton Baird, at the request of Dr. Elliot Coues, in honor of Dr. Coues’
sister Grace Darlington Coues. Dr. Coues was a naturalist and discovered the bird in
the Rocky Mountains in 1864. His sister was 18 at the time.
A couple of years ago I identified a Townsend’s Warbler heading through Munds Park
during migration. Its distinctive head pattern of a yellow face and dark cheek patch
made it easier to identify than other warblers. John Kirk Townsend was trained as a
physician and pharmacist who also had a strong interest in nature and bird collecting.
Besides the warbler, he has the following named after him; Townsend’s Vole,
Townsend’s Mole, Townsend’s Chipmunk, Townsend’s Ground Squirrel, Townsend’s
Pocket Gopher, Townsend’s Big-Eared Bat, and Townsend’s Solitaire (a bird which I
found on a trip down Schnebly Hill on the way to Sedona). Mr. Townsend died in
1851 of arsenic poisoning – he had developed a potion for taxidermy and the secret ingredient was arsenic, which he himself got too much of.
It’s pretty fascinating I think to learn how these birds were named. Also makes me
grateful for modern day medicine – treating scurvy and typhoid fever and having
warning labels on poisons like arsenic!
You can reach me at [email protected], and you can read all the archived
Birds of Munds Park articles and leave your comments at www.birdladyblog.wordpress.com. I welcome your questions, reports of sightings, and your ideas for future

Pinewood Country Club Chef Thomas
A Major Success at Wine Pairing Dinner
By Bill Spain, Pinewood Country Club Shareholder
On August 12th the Country Club held a wine pairing dinner in the
Green Room where Executive Chef Thomas Ryan enticed the attendees with a gourmet meal paired with wines from the Sonoma and
Alexander Valley as well as a tawny Porto from Portugal. The feast
was second to none. Universally, the attendee’s praised the wine
dinner as the best meal they have had at PCC in years.
The dinner consisted of a starting course of Lobster Bisque Soup
paired with a Killian “Adam and Eve” 2014 Vineyard Chardonnay from
Sonoma, California. Both were exquisite. “The soup was sublime”,
said Jayne Heckman, veteran gourmet dinner enthusiast, “We are so
lucky to have such an extraordinary chef in the middle of the woods…
just delightful.
Lamb Lollipops were next and they were cooked to the “T”. The lamb
was paired with Diamond Ridge Pinot Noir, 2012, also from Sonoma.
When this appetizer was delivered to the table some visitors who
joined the event as a guest starting asking “where is this top-notch
chef from?” The ensuing conversation about all of the positive
changes at the club and the huge improvements in Food and Beverage continued until the main course was served.
Veal Chop with Goat Cheese Strudel, Baby Carrots, Squash and
Zucchini. The table went silent. Everybody was busy eating the best
veal ever served in this zip code. Once again the topic returned to
how improved the food at the club is, this year in particular. The entire wine dinner was only $60 a person and it was worth twice as
much. The 2102 Area Code Cabernet Sauvignon served with the
main entrée was very nice, albeit not Caymus or Rombaurer, but very
good indeed. At this point, the table decided that comment cards
were necessary because when you have a meal this good, paired with
fine wines and the friendly and upbeat service from Haley and Jonda,
the board of directors should here about it. Every couple at the table
took the time to prepare and submit a complimentary comment card.
Finally, when the dessert arrived, it was a Fresh Fruit Crème Brulee
and it was to die for. It was paired with Pocas Tawny Porto, NV from
Portugal and the combination was fantastic. None of us could believe
we were in Pinewood. The meal, the service and the setting was as
good as The Cottage or Josephine’s in Flagstaff and yet it was in our
own backyard.
KUDOS to the country club management staff, food and beverage
team and the Board of Directors for the best meal any of us have had
at Pinewood Country Club….ever. It is amazing to see the improvements brought on by the change a few years ago to OB Sports Golf
Management. Outstanding Job!

Exercise for Life
HEALTH ALERT:
TOO MUCH SITTING CAN KILL YOU!
By Martha E. Thomas, PT
425 BARNWOOD TRAIL
$299,900
I was surprised to read this study and learn how too much sitting for
prolonged periods of time can cause serious and deadly health problems.
In the Journal annals of Internal Medicine, a study published in January
of this year found that people who sit for long periods of time were 24%
more likely to die from health problems. People who sit too much every
day are at an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, cancer and have
shorter life spans. Even if you exercise for 30 minutes per day but you
sit at your desk or watch TV for 6-8 hours, you are doing more harm than
good. The reason is being inactive more than being active is bad for your

health. The human body is designed to move, bend, twist and walk.
Progress is being made in the work place of progressive employers like
“GOOGLE”. Employees there have many options to get up and moving.
Work desks are raised so people can actually stand up while they are
using the computer. Some people have found sitting on large therapy
balls allows them to move around while using their computer. Lots of
companies are seeing the benefits of having treadmills and gyms so employees can work out on their lunch hours. The human body was not designed to sit in a chair for prolonged periods of time. The researchers
also found that excessive sitting is associated with an 18% chance of
dying of cardiovascular disease. Think of all the ways our culture is programmed to sit down so much. We drive to work which is sitting, then
when we get there we sit for 7-8 hours at a desk. For people who are up
on their feet moving all day due to their job situation, coming home and
sitting a few hours is OK. If you sit all day then you have to build in to
your day as much time as you can, standing and walking. Get up from
your chair and walk around and take movement breaks not snack breaks.
Eat your snacks standing up and if you take public transportation, stand
up. When meeting a friend to sit and talk, do a walk and talk instead.
When there are going to be times that you are sitting, think of ways and
times you can get up and move. The researchers found that people who
exercised, faced lower risks of all chronic illnesses. Something as easy as
parking your car in a space that makes you have to walk further before
you enter a building is another way to add steps and possibly years to
your life! Remember, every step counts!
Around 9:00 pm on August 2, 2016 76 year old Homer "Mac"
McClure picked up donated blood from the United Blood Services in
Flagstaff, AZ. He left Pulliam Airport around 9:14 pm. Shortly thereafter, residents in Kachina Village and Forest Highlands reported hearing erratic airplane engine sounds followed by a large crash. Coconino
County Sheriff's Office, AZ DPS, Flagstaff Police, Highlands Fire, and
AZ DOT responded to the scene of his crashed Twin Engine Piper
Seneca approximately 5 mi southwest of the airport and approximately 50 yards east of SR89A. There were no reports or indications
of a fire. The debris field of the crash is over 200 yards long; tops of
trees broken off show an impact path. Coconino County Sheriff's Office, Medical Examiners Office, the FAA, NTSB will be investigating.

Firewood Cutting Season: mid-April to mid-December 2016
One of the most popular recreation activities on the Coconino National Forest isn't usually thought of as a recreation. Every year
people come to the Forest from as far away as the Phoenix metropolitan area to harvest their year's supply of firewood. The Coconino provides firewood for personal use both on a free-use
permit and a paid permit basis. In either case, a permit must be
acquired by anyone harvesting any firewood on the National Forest, except for
the rather small amounts used in a campfire and gathered at the campfire site.
Permits are available at any of the following locations. Please note: only the
Red Rock Ranger Station office is open on weekends.
Supervisor's Office at 1824 S. Thompson St. in Flagstaff, Arizona
(8 a.m. - 4 p.m.); 928-527-3600
Flagstaff Ranger Station on Hwy 89,
Flagstaff, Arizona (8 a.m. - 4 p.m.); 928-526-0866
Mogollon Rim Ranger Station on Hwy 87,
20 miles north of Strawberry, Arizona
(7:30 a.m. - 3:45 p.m.); 928-477-2255
Red Rock Ranger Station on Hwy 179,
just south of the Village of Oak Creek, Arizona
(9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., 7 day a week)
Verde Ranger Station, 300 E. Hwy 260,
Camp Verde, Arizona; 928-567-4121
Permit Conditions:
•Free use firewood may not be sold, exchanged or used in business.
•An individual may purchase the permit for you -- as long as they
request that your name be added to the permit.
•Wood is only to be cut or gathered in areas specified on the permit.
•Stump height not to exceed 12 inches.
Power saws must have a 0.023 stainless steel spark arrestor screen.
•The amount of wood gathered must be recorded on the permit in ink and the
appropriate number of load tickets must be attached to the load before leaving
the cutting area.
•Cut on National Forest land only.
•Chain saw restrictions may apply during fire season.
Not all dead wood is fair game
Trimming dead limbs from live trees is not permitted on the forest, and standing dead trees may only be cut if they meet standards listed below. Before cutting any dead tree check it carefully for signs of wildlife habitation. If it contains
woodpecker holes or other large cavities, it most likely is providing a valuable
home for birds and other small mammals. These trees are generally rotten and
wouldn't make good firewood anyway, so please don't destroy an "Animal Inn."
Rules for cutting standing dead trees:
Dead standing pine or fir that is less than 12 inches in diameter or less than 15
feet tall. (Diameter is measured at 4 and one half feet above the ground and
12 inches in diameter is equal to 37 inches in circumference.)

Supervisors approve funding for local food bank
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., – The Coconino County Board of Supervisors
approved $10,000 in Community Grant funding for St. Mary’s Food
Bank in Flagstaff.
St. Mary’s Food Bank will use the funds to provide food for people
in need of assistance. $10,000 will allow St. Mary’s to provide over
300,000 meals for low-income, working poor, people experiencing
homelessness and other communities in the County.
The Food Bank, is a non-sectarian, nonprofit organization that
fights hunger by gathering and distributing food to sites that serve
people in need. The organization has three locations in the Phoenix
area and one in Flagstaff.
“I’m proud the Board of Supervisors adopted funding to help St.
Mary’s Food Bank continue their mission to deliver meals to people
who have fallen on hard times,” said Chair of the Board, District 5
Supervisor Lena Fowler. “The Food Bank provides meals for those
in need throughout the County, not just for the residents of
Flagstaff. I’m happy my colleagues were able to allocate district
community grant funding that will help many people receive food.”
The Coconino Community Grant Program is provided through the
Board of Supervisors to administer funding to community organizations that promote public purpose or public benefit in the areas of
education, economic development or community development. Request for funds must show that the event/program benefits the public and provides some sort of educational, economic or
developmental benefit.
To find out more about the St. Mary’s Food Bank in Flagstaff,
please visit them at 201 E. Birch Ave., Suite 14, Flagstaff, AZ 86001
or call 877. 249.3037.
Dead standing pinon and juniper is available regardless of size unless obvious
wildlife cavities are present or the tree is signed as a wildlife tree.
Dead standing aspen that is less than 12 inches in diameter or less than 15
feet tall may be cut from June 1 to September 30.
NO CUTTING ANY STANDING OAK, DEAD OR ALIVE
You may take dead and down wood, limbs, old logs, and chunks of wood lying
on the ground; however, you may not take any wood that is marked with paint
or left in logging decks (stacks of logs, usually at the road side ready to be
loaded on a log truck). You may remove wood from piles left behind as waste
by road construction or logging operations (these piles are usually of a dome
type shape and include logging slash, limbs, tops of trees and unusable larger
pieces), but be sure to stack all that you don't use back on the pile.
For more information/map go to: www.fs.usda.gov
The holidays are right around the corner...please donate to those in
need and bring some happiness to children, families and seniors
who go through tough times, especially during the holiday season!
Try to buy some extra dry goods when you’re out grocery shopping
and donate to St. Mary’s Food Bank.

AFTER EIGHT YEARS OF BUYER’S
MARKET THE TABLES TURN
“Broker Tidbits” By Bill Spain
Provident Partners Realty Designated Broker
Sales continue to be brisk this summer. There have been more than thirty
pending sale showing each month ever since the season began. Updated
and clean homes in the under $250K and under market are selling the
week they hit the market…some of them the first day on the market.
Seller’s are much less inclined to make all kinds of repairs; even on homes
that are fifty years old. The spread between asking price and selling price
in this key midline price point are now virtually one in the same.
Homes that are not selling all have the same thing in common; they are either overpriced, not staged to sell or have some kind of actual defect like
an outdated kitchen or decks that are in disrepair. Homes that are in original condition dating back to 1978 tend to need quite a bit of remodeling
to make them current and if they are priced like homes that have been remodeled, the outdated homes just sit.
Higher priced homes have a different situation. Two homes have sold over
$500,000 so far this summer…both of them were Provident Partners Listings. Higher priced homes tend to be larger, have more amenities, have
larger lots, full garages and at least bedrooms and bathrooms. Since
Munds Park is mostly a vacation second home market, the marketability of
the larger, more expensive homes tends be much longer and the buyers
tend to be much more requiring. Knowing this upfront, helps to set reasonable expectations for the seller’s so that they know that larger homes
do not sell nearly as quickly in Munds Park as they do in the valley.
Homes that are represented by realtors out of Phoenix or Flagstaff also
tend to stagnate and take much longer to sell as their realtor representative is not on-site and available to show property quickly. Often, uneducated realtors not familiar with Munds Park tend to over-price their listing
because they reply on Zillow or Realtor.com to help them price the home
and those marketing vehicles are completely off when pricing homes in
the middle of the forest versus track homes in Phoenix.
Lastly, seller’s, please clean up your home and make sure that your door
knobs function and that the home is in a neat and tidy manner. Buyer’s do
not like to see shoes lying around, toys all over the place or peeling paint
at every turn…especially in a second home community. They want to see
properly cared for and maintained homes that are staged to show and
that they can envision themselves living in. Presenting a home for sale really goes a long way in obtaining the price a seller wants and a sale within
the first season. If your home has been on the market for several seasons
it is most likely that price, presentation or marketing is the reason.

Little Free Library
The first we heard of the Little Free Library was when we were on vacation last summer with our daughter, son and daughter-in-law. I pulled out
a book to read and our daughter asked if I had every of this organization.
Since we had not, she told us what she knew about it and suggested that
since we had so many books
maybe her dad could build a
book nook for us to place in
Munds Park. We found plans in
one of Harold’s woodworking
magazines and the idea took off.
The first Little Free Library we
saw was outside a business in
Colorado. The boxes came in
many different shapes and sizes.
Some are built to look like the
residence it is near.
A Little Free Library is a “take a
book, replace a book” free book
exchange. There is an understanding that real people are sharing their
favorite books with their community.
The mission as stated on the LittleFreeLibrary, com website is: “to promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges
worldwide and to build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity and wisdom across generations.”
Our hope is that residents, visitors, and passersby will enjoy using our
Little Free Library located in front of our home at 675 E. Oak. It will be
in place from May 10-October 10.

Bus Stop
Reviewed by Clyde Morrison
Entering the playhouse this time we were pleasantly surprised by a curtain hiding the stage. Then when the curtain was drawn we were amazed by
the setting of Grace's Cafe. This setting is one of the finest I have seen at
Mund's Park. There was an old wall telephone, a bar, older style tables and
chairs and even a bank of seats against the wall for those waiting to board the
bus. The doors were a bright blue with Grace's Cafe painted on them so it
could be read from the outside. There was even a window with a snow scene
outside and snow coming down. What an outstanding effort was put forward
by the set designers, Nancy and Bart Del Duco. It might be noted here also
that Bart is responsible for the new add-on for the ticket booth and concession
stand at the front of the theater. That makes it easier to find the ticket booth
and gives the Players a place to store walls and sets. Thanks, Bart.
Bus Stop is not a play with a complex plot. It is simply the story of a
snowy night in which a bus is forced to stop for a while at an old and small
cafe for a few hours. However, what makes this play fun is the development of
interesting characters. The main characters were Bo (played by Bill Gibney)
and Cherie (played by Melanie Westmark). Very well done both of you. Bo
was a cowboy who had no idea how he was to act around a woman. Cherie
was a lounge singer of questionable reputation who was being forced by Bo
into a possible marriage and move to a ranch in Montana. She was somewhat
interested in Bo, but his loud, forceful behavior was not what she wanted in a
marriage, and he frightened her.
This was John Edmonds' first time directing on the Pinewood stage, and
what a job he did. Here is hoping he will continue directing for our theater. His
fresh ideas were welcome. For instance, when speeches were going on at one
part of the stage, action was still happening at other places. Bo kept pacing
back and forth as he was trying to understand Cherie and how he was supposed
to act toward her. Vern, Bo's sidekick played by Les Maurseth perfectly. He
kept picking at his guitar and calming the outbursts of Bo. Dr. Lyman kept
drinking and adding something from his flask into what the waitress brought to
him as he tried to make friends with her. All of these were important to the development of the characters as they related to others.
My favorite characters were Dr Lyman (Lee Henry) and the young innocent waitress Elma (Madison Edmonds). Dr. Lyman liked young women
and booze. He knew Shakespeare, and that just captivated the naive Elma.
Her wide eyed innocence and admiration for the doctor was wonderfully portrayed. The Romeo and Juliet scene was a classic as Elma lip-synced Romeo's
speeches. She really felt the emotion of the sad Juliet. What a remarkable, entertaining actress this young Madison is.
The biggest laugh in the whole play was when Grace (acted by Nancy
Del Duco) came on stage in a kimono and wildly messed up hair. She had told
her waitress that she had a bad headache and needed to rest so she went up to
her apartment. At about the same time the bus driver (Scott Sustman) said he
needed to go out for a walk in the freezing cold and snow. It appeared that
Grace didn't get much rest as the bus driver's boots were found outside her door
and he had obviously spent hours with her in her apartment.

Meetings kicking off I-11 corridor study
draw big turnout Hundreds provide input on
Nogales-to-Wickenburg corridor
PHOENIX – The numbers speak volumes about Arizona’s interest in
the proposed Interstate 11: Six public meetings held recently
attracted 540 community members who shared comments and
questions. Hundreds more offered their perspectives online.
The Arizona Department of Transportation’s Interstate 11 study team
visited Casa Grande, Buckeye, Nogales, Tucson, Marana and
Wickenburg to involve the community in a process known as public
scoping, part of an environmental study to select a corridor alternative between Nogales and Wickenburg.
That had ADOT representatives answering questions, receiving feedback, and encouraging attendees to mark suggestions and concerns
on maps of the 280-mile-long corridor study area.
“We’re excited about the high level of interest and engagement that
we’ve seen,” ADOT Director John Halikowski said. “The great turnout
and the opportunity for the public to tell us what’s important to them
are critical to this process.”
No specific routes for I-11 have been chosen or favored at this early
stage in the process. ADOT’s goal is having a selected corridor
alternative in place at the end of the environmental study. A no-build
alternative will be considered as well.
The next formal public involvement opportunity will begin early next
year, when the study team will present possible routes for I-11.
In addition to those who attended the June meetings, 125 people
submitted comment forms or surveys and 522 people completed an
online survey during a 45-day comment period.
The study team, which also held scoping meetings in Phoenix, Casa
Grande and Tucson with representatives of 21 federal, state and
local agencies, will now analyze the feedback.
Anyone interested in sharing their views about the study can do so at
any time throughout the study process. Information and materials,
including a map of the corridor study area, are available at
i11study.com/Arizona.
The veteran Pinewood Players actors Bill Gibney, Melanie Westmark,
Nancy Del Duco, Les Maureth, and Lee Henry were all at the best of their performances. And, the completely new and recent additions to the team of players Madison Edmonds, Scott Sustman, and Marty Haughian made this an
evening to enjoy and remember.

THE REC HALL PARKING LOT
The Memorial Tree Project has come to a conclusion more than five
full years after the program was launched to beautify Munds Park.
The 155 plaques have been handmade by MPBA members to identify those who contributed to the Project. The cedar wood plaques
have been painted with the names of the individuals memorialized
and then coated in polyurethane to preserve the plaque. A rustic
style wire is attached to the top of each plaque so that it can be
hung on a tree where it will remain as long as nature allows.
All of the plaques have been placed on trees. If the people who
purchased plaques want to know the location of their tree, contact
Len Friedlund at Provident Partners Realty, 20 W. Pinewood Blvd,
(928) 600-3896. Memorial Trees are located on both sides of
Pinewood Blvd and on Munds Ranch Road on the West side of I-17
along the RV Park property and other businesses.

The initial plan to line the entrances along the freeway had to be

In lieu of that plan, MPBA plans to spread wild flower seed this fall
to replace the weeds that ADOT cultivated along the frontage roads
and underpass. Fundraising efforts planned over the next year will
be to plant flower seed and lay down gravel in some key areas at
the entrance to improve the overall entrance appearance.

APS AND PHOENIX SUNS TEAM UP TO PROVIDE
STEM MINI-GRANTS TO ARIZONA TEACHERS
PHOENIX – What do cardboard boat races, worm farms, robot coding
and solar car design have in common? They are all recent classroom
projects funded by STEM mini-grants from APS and the Phoenix Suns.
And, effective immediately, Arizona K-12 teachers in public and charter
schools within APS’s service territory are invited to apply for STEM
mini-grants for the 2016-17 school year. Grants will be awarded for
teachers to implement innovative projects that help bring STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and math) to life.
For more than a decade, APS and the Phoenix Suns have partnered to
promote STEM education in Arizona schools by offering $50,000 in
mini-grants for hands-on projects focused on the STEM subjects.
Grants of up to $2,500 each may be awarded, with a total of up to
$50,000 available for the 2016-2017 school year.
“When students get to experience STEM subjects through interactive
projects, something special happens,” said Tina Marie Tentori, Executive Director of the APS Foundation. “Whether the project is growing
food through aquaponics and selling it at a farmers market, as was
done by the Show Low High School STEM Club, or using lichen gardens to study climate change, a project taken on by seventh-grade science students at Flagstaff’s Northland Preparatory Academy, interactive
learning creates a spark that often inspires students to pursue additional STEM studies, and eventually rewarding jobs in STEM-related
careers.”
Teachers are invited to visit aps.com/corporategiving for program procedures, criteria and STEM mini-grants applications. There, they also
will find a list of project summaries from the 2015-16 school year. Applications will be accepted online from August 8 to October 5, and recipients will be notified of the status of their application by November 8. For
more information, teachers may contact Laura McBride, APS senior
corporate giving specialist, at 602-250-2702 or by email at
[email protected].

MUNDS PARK COMMUNITY CHURCH
UPDATE
www.mundsparkcc.org
by Mike Sims
One Day At A Time
Wow, sometimes I get overwhelmed
with worrying about the future.
There is no guarantee I'll even have
tomorrow. Many of us spend time
worrying about having enough
money, our health, will the roof leak
during monsoon, how much snow we
will have this winter and too many
other things to list.
Christ told us in Matthew 6:34, “So
do not be worried about tomorrow,
for tomorrow will bring worries of its
own. Today's trouble is enough for
today.” I was reading a devotional
this past week and part of it said,
“Life by the yard is very hard, but life
by the inch is a cinch!”
Now I'm not suggesting you just go
out and sit on a rock and wait for God
to take you home, but many times our
worrying cannot change our situation.
What we can do is to ask Christ to
give us courage and share our concerns with others who in turn can
pray for us.
The power of prayer is incredible!
We keep our prayer lists in Sunday
School and periodically review re-
quests made in the past. We are humbled to see the many answered
prayers and the way Christ comes
through. Our answers are not always
what we expect because He answers
many of requests with miracles.
Next time you are worried try praying, “Christ of all time, please walk
with me today as I put my trust in
you.”
