T
en years ago, the auxiliary and SAMA management hatched the idea for
the Garden Party as a fundraiser for the Ligonier Valley Museum. The
Garden Party was designed to capitalize on the beauty of our gardens and the
Museum’s idyllic location here in historic Ligonier. Over the years, area residents,
Pittsburghers and others have marked their calendars to highlight the date for
the Garden Party and to note this unique experience as a key social event. The
Garden Party at the Ligonier Valley Museum has become a summer highlight for
the Museum and this community.
This very special event is recreated each year through the efforts, commitment and
hard work of an engaged auxiliary, a dedicated Museum staff and other volunteers,
each of whom work tirelessly to make this a wonderful evening for everyone in
attendance. Site Coordinator, Sommer Toffle, and event chairs, Sharon Vito and
Mary Weidlein, have organized an evening of verve, sophistication and fun for all.
The Garden Party is critical to the Museum’s fundraising efforts for the year.
With state budget cuts and intense competition for available funds, not-for-profit
organizations will be challenged to survive and thrive in the years to come.
Funds raised through the Garden Party provide support for museum operations,
exhibitions and programs. Your continued support is essential to the Museum’s
future success. We simply can’t serve our audiences—young and old, families
and individuals—without the support from donors like you.
This year’s Garden Party offers a change of pace from prior years but is anchored
still by the gallery exhibition and silent auction. Live acoustic music will add to
the party atmosphere. A reception format, instead of the formal sit-down dinner,
will provide guests with a better opportunity to mingle with friends and neighbors,
to relish the artwork of Rita Haldeman and Cliff McGuire, to consider that unique
silent auction item and, weather permitting, to enjoy the Museum’s gardens.
The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art is proud to present the works of Rita
Haldeman and Cliff McGuire. SAMA is fortunate to have an exhibition of Rita
Haldeman’s paintings on display for the Garden Party. She lovingly presents a
rich tapestry of the Laurel Highlands’ scenic beauty. Her painting of our gardens
in full bloom captures the splendor and beauty of the Museum in the spring. Cliff
McGuire’s unique wall relief sculptures compliment Rita Haldeman’s paintings.
McGuire’s sculptures are inspired by nature. Each sculpture is a work of art crafted
to reflect his love of the outdoors. The Haldeman and McGuire exhibitions, like the
Garden Party, reflect the natural beauty of the area . . . it’s an enjoyable combination
. . . it’s a fun venue.
The Garden Party has grown to become a signature event for the Museum. I am
confident that the 2011 Garden Party will be a fun celebration and set the stage for
us to get together again next year here at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art’s
Ligonier Valley Museum.

elcome and thank you for coming to Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art
at Ligonier Valley to celebrate the 10th annual Garden Party, “Ten Years
& Tons of Fun.” This fundraiser is created to celebrate our current exhibitions,
Rita K. Haldeman: Seasons of the Landscape and Cliff McGuire: Nature in 2
½ Dimension and provide much-needed support for upcoming exhibitions and
programs. Your support throughout this evening also contributes to maintenance and
daily operation support of our beautiful Museum amidst the Ligonier countryside.
This benefit would not be possible without the generosity and perseverance of
many hardworking individuals. It was a delight to work with our Garden Party CoChairs, Sharon Vito and Mary Weidlein. Augmenting their dedication and tireless
efforts were the members of our Garden Party Committee, whose devotion and
generosity is incomparable. A special thanks to Graphic Designer, Bonnie Hoffman,
Decorating Chair Helen Thorne, and the Weeders and Seeders of Ligonier, for their
expertise.
I thank the officers of our Ligonier Valley Museum Auxiliary: President, Sharon
Vito; Vice President, Barbara Kravits; Secretary, Susan Endersbe; and Treasurer,
Bonnie Hoffman, all of whom do a fabulous job leading our Auxiliary in promoting
and supporting our Museum. I thank the other members of our Museum Auxiliary
for their continued support and dedication. Thank you SAMA staff and Board
of Trustees for your assistance and support. In addition, I recognize our student
volunteers.
We are grateful for our sponsors, donors, Ernie Vallozzi and his staff, vendors,
and everyone else who has donated their time, service and talents to make this
fundraiser a success. Thank you for supporting the Museum and enabling us to
exhibit American artwork and provide programming to the people of Southwestern
Pennsylvania. Enjoy and have a wonderful evening.

am delighted to welcome you to the tenth annual Garden Party at the Ligonier
Valley branch of the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art. As the new President
of the auxiliary, I stand on the shoulders of past presidents such as Helen Thorne,
Mary Weidlein, and others who have shown me the honor of their hard work and
willingness to put themselves out there for SAMA. It is truly a pleasure to work with
an organization that benefits all ages and interests. The unrelenting loyalty of our
auxiliary will lead us in reminding new members how important service is to the
community.
Sommer Toffle, our Museum’s Site Coordinator, exemplifies how our young talent can
show us the way to opening ourselves up to new opportunities and self expression. I
enjoyed her energy and knowledge in putting this event together. She and the SAMA
staff have worked diligently to make this evening a successful fundraiser.
We thank all who have attended and contributed to the silent auction. Please be
sure to support those who have advertised in this booklet as it is their generosity
and support that will keep our community a strong, vibrant contributor of the arts.
We also appreciate the participation of our featured artists, Rita Haldeman and
Cliff McGuire, who have inspired the evening with their beautiful exhibitions.
Enjoy the evening and all that this wonderful Museum has to offer throughout the
year.

I
t is a great pleasure for me to be part of the 10th annual Garden Party for benefit
of the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Ligonier Valley. I extend a warm
welcome, and many thanks, to all of our guests and patrons for your participation
in this special occasion.
Through the tireless efforts of past and present auxiliary members and staff, this
event has developed into an important source of support for the Museum, and it is
always a fun and rewarding evening for all who attend.
My special thanks go to co-chair Sharon Vito, SAMA staff, auxiliary members
and, this year, to the Weeders and Seeders of Ligonier for making the lovely and
imaginative floral decorations. Without the careful planning and cheerful guidance
of Sommer Toffle, none of this would be successful. Thank you, Sommer!
