Powwow to take place at fair
By Mark S. Moses
Friend of the Fair
Something different will take
place this year at the 69th Annual
Robeson Regional Agricultural
Fair.
In conjunction with the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina,
the Lumbee Regional Development Association, the 2015 Sr.
Ms. Lumbee and the Lumbee
Ambassadors, a small Pow wow
exhibition of native dance and
drumming will take place on the
afternoon of Sunday, October 4th,
in the McDonald’s Midway Stage,
beginning at 2 p.m.
As fairgoers listen to native
drums and songs, American
Indian dancers from the Lumbee
Tribe, dressed in colorful Indian
Regalias, will begin the exhibition
with a Grand Entry while Preacher Bobby Deal will serve as the
Master of Ceremonies and will
introduce the 2015 Sr. Ms. Lumbee and the Lumbee Ambassadors. The 2015 Sr. Ms. Lumbee is
Angelita Hunt; the Ambassadors
are Little Miss Lumbee – Chloe
Locklear; Junior Miss Lumbee –
Kyla Jarrett; Junior Miss Lumbee
– Kaitlynn Maria Deal; and Miss
Lumbee – Alexis Raeana Jones.
Lumbee dancers will perform
several different dances that will
take place during this native cus-
tom of the Pow Wow.
Mable Moses, the former 2013
Sr. Ms. Lumbee, will perform
the Golden Age Women’s Traditional; Tina Mullin, Destiny Sosa,
Calista Deal and Keely Deal will
dance the Ladies Traditonal and
Joseph Brayboy and Nolan Hunt
will peform the Men’s Traditional
dance. Cierra Mullin will perform
the Girl’s Fancy dance and the
Boy’s Grass dance will be done by
Malachi Sosa. The Girl’s Jingle
dance will be performed by Taylor Mullin and Penelope Brayboy.
The Native drummers are:
Nolan Hunt, Christian Locklear,
Chandon Locklear and Brett
Brooks. Dillan Deal and his sister,
Calista, the 2014 Jr. Miss Lumbee, will perform songs.
What is a Pow Wow?
According to Wikipedia, a
POW Wow is a gathering of some
of North America’s Native people.
A modern POW Wow is a place
where Native American First
Nation people to meet and dance,
sing, socilize and honor their cultures. For example, the Lumbee
Tribe gathers in the spring for its
‘Dance of the Spring Moon’ POW
Wow. Dancing competitions take
place and prize money is won as
well as exhibitions like the one
fairgoers will see with no prize
money awarded.
Pow Wows can take place
in one day or several days up
or up to a week. Albequerque,
New Mexico, holds its annual
‘Gathering of Nations Pow Wow’,
deemed to be the largest Pow
Wow in North America with over
3,000 dancers, who represent
over 500 North American Native
American tribes.
Mark S. Moses serves as coordinator of the event and can be
reached at 910-536-8222.
For more information about
Pow Wows and/or the history of
the Lumbee Tribe of North American, the largest Indian tribe east
of the Mississippi, one can go

The Robesonian
Cheerleading competition sounds off at the fair
By Mark S. Moses
Friend of the Fair
You’ve got to rock with the White!
And roll with the Blue!
Hey Bulldogs!
You know what you’ve got to do!
You’ve go to rock with the White!
And roll with the Blue!!!
There’s a good chance fairgoers may
hear that cheerleading chant this year
at the 69th Annual Robeson Regional
Agricultural Fair when the annual
cheerleading contests take place in the
grandstand area on two different days.
Sponsored by Lumbee River Electric
Membership Corporation and coordinated by fairboard member Rudy Paul,
the first competition will take place
on Monday, October 5th, beginning at
6:30 p.m. in the grandstand area of the
fairgrounds.
Rain date is Wednesday, October
7th. For additional information, contact Paul at (910) 734-0461.
There will be three divisions that
include middle schools, junior varsity
and varsity.
Team trophies will be awarded to the
first place team, along with $500.00
for in the varsity competition with
second place trophies going to each
team in each of the three divisions and
$350.00. Registration forms can be
printed by going online to www.robesoncountyfair.com.
Certified judges from Cheer, Ltd.,
will do the judging of all squads by the
North Caorlina High School Athletic
Association.
“This competition truly recognizes
the special talent we have throughout
our county,” said Wendy Chavis, director of the Robeson County Parks and
Recreation Department. “Much like
many other team sports, cheerleading
involves athleticism along with dedication in which schools show this with
lots of excitement that can be heard
all over the grandstand area at the
Robeson County Regional Agricultural
Fair.”
Then on Tuesday, October 6th, the
Robeson County Recreation Department and sponsored by Robeson County Commissioner Tom Taylor, will hold
the 5th and 6th grade Cheerleading
Contest in the grandstand area.
“Our 5th and 6th grade competition
teaches hard work and dedication,”
added Ms. Chavis. “Our youth along
with our volunteer coaches practice
really hard to get ready for the fair.
This is always an exciting night and
the girls really look forward

Diaper Derby always a big hit at county fair
By Mark S. Moses
Friend of the Fair
This may be 69th anniversary
of the Robeson Regional Agricultural Fair, but for 39 of those
years, the fair has held one
of its most sought-after (and
smallest) events.
On Saturday, October 10th,
the last day of the fair, the 39th
Annual Diaper Derby will take
place from 3-4 p.m. under the
McDonald’s Mainway Stage
Sponsored by Robeson County Commissioner Tom Taylor
and The Bargain House, located
at 1403 E 5th Street in Lumberton, toddlers between the
ages of six and 12 months and
not yet walking, will take to the
‘racetrack’ in an effort to win.
Should there not be a winner
at the end of the three minutes, the baby closest to the
finish line will be declared the
winner.
“I’ve been really surprised to
see how many babies are in the
diaper derby,” said Commissioner Taylor. “I like watching
the parents better than I do
the kids trying to get across
the finish line. The parents and
grandparents get involved in
it, too. It’s been real successful
and the crowd really gets into
it.
It’s just a real neat event.”
According to Buddy Britt,
fairboard member and coordinator of the event, the first
winner of the Diaper Derby
was Chip Bullard, son of fair
board member Herbert Bullard.
“This is the longest running
event at the fair, besides the
fair itself, said Mr. Britt. “The
most entrants we’ve ever had
were thirty-eight and the least
we had was eighteen.”
For more information about
the annual Diaper Derby at
this year’s fair, contact Britt at
(910) 738-7004 or go online at
www.robesoncountyfair.com
and print out a registration
form.
A registration form can be
found in the Robeson County
Fair book and can be either
mailed or brought to the competition. Th registration deadline is 30 minutes prior to the
start of the derby.

Fair feast offers variety of food
By Mark S. Moses
Friend of the Fair
Can’t you just taste those funnel cakes, candy
apples, and Italian sausages piled high with
peppers and onions? What about the collard
sandwiches, turkey legs, and fried banana
pudding? We all know it is not the healthiest
food in the world, but there is nothing more
delicious than foods at the county fair.
It does not matter what night you plan
to visit the 68th Annual Robeson Regional
Agricultural Fair, just make sure you plan the
trip so you can eat dinner at the fairgrounds.
You will be able to select some very special
foods that are available only one time each year
– during the county fair. You will be able enjoy
a good old hot dog with all the trimmings, or
an Italian sausage with onions and peppers.
You can enjoy an elephant ear pastry, or
a collard sandwich. You can experience
traditional pizza, or fried banana pudding.
Before you do go to the fair, please
understand that certain foods at the fair can
be expensive. If you like traditional foods
like hot dogs, French fries, and Pepsis, you
will not spend any more for a meal than if
you went to one of the fast food places in
town. However, if you are adventuresome
and want to sample the exotic foods of the
midway such as fried banana pudding, curly
fries, rib eye steak sandwiches, and giant
lemonades with squiggly straws, you should
understand that you will pay extra for a meal
like this.
All vendors that have been permitted to
operate on the fairgrounds this year are
required to post their prices where they
can easily be seen. You are encouraged to
determine what your meal will cost before
ordering. If you do not understand the menu
or the pricing, please ask the attendant what
it will cost before ordering.
Are you hungry yet? I’ll see you at the fair.

Celebrating our favorite gourd, the pumpkin
By Mark S. Moses
Friend of the Fair
Fall wouldn’t be fall without leaves falling and
pumpkin decorating. What better place to celebrate
one of our great agriculture commodities, the
pumpkin, then at the fair?
This year, the Second Annual Pumpkin
Decorating Contest will take place at the fair.
Sponsored by Lumberton Recreation Department,
the first 100 youth will get a free pumpkin to
decorate; they will get to pick it right out of our
pumpkin patch.
These pumpkins cannot be carved (because they
will be on display all week and we want to make
sure they last) but supplies will be on hand to
decorate them any way the youth want and make
them perfectly personable.
There are four age categories: 4-6 years, 7-9
years, 10-12 years, and 13-15 years for competition.
Ribbons will be awarded to the top three winners in
each age group.
You can register in advance by filling
out the contest entry form on line at www.
robesoncountyfair.com or from the fair book, and
sending it to Tanya Underwood, 1100 North Cedar
Street, Lumberton, NC 28358, before September 25.
If you register in advance you will have a pumpkin
reserved for you. All other pumpkins will be
available on a first come, first served basis. Only one
entry per person.
All pumpkins will be available for the artist to pick
up and take home on Sunday, October 11, from 1-5
p.m.

Animals receive high-tech
display at the fair this year
By Mark S. Moses
Friend of the Fair
Fairs are known for animals,
lights, and lots of fun and this
newest twist on an old favorite
is sure to please, if not intrique.
We are trying something new at
the fair and, in all honesty, it’s
to find a way around a disease
while trying to enhance the
experience young members of
4-H have at the fair.
You may have heard about
avian influenza, which is a
disease that has wiped out
poultry in other states and
the reason behind the jump
in egg and poultry prices
around the country. In an
effort to keep the disease from
spreading to North Carolina,
the state veterinarian’s office
has temporarily suspended all
poultry shows and exhibits
at fairs, as well as the sale
of poultry in the state from
until January. That’s because
there’s concern that migratory
birds may bring the disease
into the state, and this is the
best preventative measure to
make sure the disease does not
spread.
Consequently, that means
we can’t have a 4-H chicken
show at the fair — or can we?
Fair board President Allen
Faircloth was happy to try
something new, so we will be
using technology to have a
chicken show. How this works
is that our young 4-H members
will record videos where they
handle their chicken, point
out parts and explain what the
strengths and weaknesses of
their birds are. We may not be
able to have the actual birds in
the ring, but the competitors
will still be there with video of
chickens they have been raising
since May.
We are using technology to
enhance the learning experience
for our youth, allow the show to
go on and assist our Extension
agents in continuing to teach
youth about agriculture when,
in the past, diseases would have
halted the education process.
If you have a chance, come
out to the Robeson Regional
Agricultural Fair from Oct. 2 to
Oct. 10 and see how we have
worked together to make sure
our youth still get top-notch
agricultural education through
hands-on opportunities. The
virtual chicken show will take
place in the livestock building
starting at 7 pm on Wednesday,
October 7. Come on out and
support our enterprising youth.

Chicken Bog Cookoff
By Mark S. Moses
Friend of the Fair
Aside from candy apples, cotton candy
and Italian sausage with peppers and
onions, fairgoers to the 69th annual Robeson Regional Agricultural Fair will get to
sample a Robeson County cooking tradition.
On Saturday, October 10th, the 21st
Annual National Chicken Bog Cook-Off will
take place at 5p.m. with a first place prize
of $1,000 and a trophy going to the winner.
Second place receives $500.00 and a trophy
and $200.00 and a trophy to third. Recipe
judging will take place at 5 p.m.
The event will take place near the food
court by the South tent.
Plates and soft drink will be available to
the public immediately following the judging around 6 p.m. A donation of $6.00 with
go to the Boys and Girls Club of Robeson
County.
Due to increased safety measures related
to open gas burners, cooking spaces are
limited.
Thanks to the main sponsor, Mountaire
Farms of North Carolina, the cook-off has
gained lots of participation and notoriety.
Over the years since the cook-off’s inception, there have been as many as 40 contestants, but usually about 15 each year.
For those not familiar with what a
chicken bog is, it’s mainly a mixture of
slow-cooked rice, juicy and tender chicken,
sometimes sausage is added and spices to
add to the flavor.
“I have seen bogs with all kinds of
unusual ingredients such as red hots,
eet
r
mushrooms, cooked in wine, tomatoes, but
judges seem to favor those recopies with
just the basic ingredients of chicken and
rice, small amounts of sausage, and other
basic flavorings,” stated one former events
coordinator. “We always have five very
qualified judges, so those selected, as winners, are very deserving.”
Jean Stewart is this year’s event coordinator and contact. Contact telephone
number is (910) 536-2073 for more information.
Participants are allowed to spruce up
their booth and cooking area, but the judging in based solely on recipe only, not their
booths. The bog is cooked on site and once
the judging is finished and the winner
announced; fairgoers may sample some of
the bogs of their choosing for a $6.00 fee, a
savings of two dollars from last year.
Soft drinks will also be available.
“This is an event that has been going for
years,” said Jean Stewart, an event coordinator. “For some folks, it is an annual tradition to come down and taste the different
bogs and for others, it is all about who are
named the best chicken bog.”
Registration forms are available in the
Robeson County Fair book and must be
returned by October 9th, 2015, along with
a $20.00 deposit in order to compete.
Registration forms and a complete set
of rules can be printed from the Robeson
Regional Agricultural Fair’s website –
www.robesoncountyfair.com. More information can be obtained by calling Jean
Stewart at (910) 536-2073.
All proceeds will go to the Boys and Girls
Club of Lumberton/Robeson County.

Calling all chicken pickers!
By Mark S. Moses
Friend of the Fair
This is a contest unlike any you
have seen before. Sponsored by
Mountaire, the First Annual Chicken
Pickin’ Contest is scheduled to
take place on Saturday, October 3,
at 2 p.m. at the Robeson Regional
Agricultural Fair.
If you are wondering what is a
chicken pickin’ contest, don’t worry
we are happy to explain. See, some
folks thought it was about pickin’ the
best chicken (we do have a contest
for that too, it’s called 4-H Poultry
Judging), or getting down to serious
plucking (because it is important to
remove the feathers from the bird
before eating), but when you get
down to it, those contests don’t have
any meat on them and that’s exactly
what we are looking for here, meat.
Contestants will have a 4.5 pound
oven roasted bird placed in front of
them to pick and shred all the meat
and skin from the bones. The meat
must be shredded like you would eat
on a sandwich. Once the bird is fully
picked, another bird will be placed in
front of the contestant.
This process will go on for five
minutes. All the shredded meat will
be placed in the contestant’s tray
and weighed at the end of the five
minutes. The person with the most
meat (by weight) wins. There will be
four heats of five contestants. The
winner from each round will go to
the finals.
The four finalists will compete
for cash and prizes that range from
$500 and a plaque for the first place
winner to $150 for the fourth place
winner.
To become a contestant all you
have to do is fill out the registrations
form in the fair book or online at
www.robesoncountyfair.com, and
send it to Mark Reif, Community
Relation Manager, 17269 NC 71
Highway North, Lumber Bridge, NC
28357.
Fifteen individuals will be selected
prior to the event and five will be
chosen from the crowd the day of the
event. So do you think you can pick
a chicken? There is only one way to
find out, sign up now!
