Important information
Marriage Licence
The first thing to do upon arrival in Cyprus is to file an application to obtain a special marriage license. This
allows couples to get married 3 full working days after the application is submitted. The application is submitted
to the wedding clerk at the local Town Hall (Monday to Friday, before 10:00 hours) and must be accompanied by
the documents listed below. Two witnesses are required in accordance with Cyprus Law – the hotel can supply
witnesses if necessary.

Supporting Documents
Validity of Marriage Certificate
The following original documents must be either written in or translated into Greek or English and certified by the
relevant authority or Embassy:
A marriage cer tificate issued in Cyprus is a legally recognized document. For couples

from countries other than the UK, it may be necessary for your marriage cer tificate to be
Birth Certificates
legalized. For this purpose the so-called “Apostille stamp” must be applied for from either
Notice of Marriage (completed by the Marriage Officer) the Ministry of Justice or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nicosia, Cyprus.
Sworn Affidavit or Certificate of No Impediment signed by a solicitor or notary public confirming your marital
status, i.e. divorced, widowed or single, and that you are free to marry. This document must be dated, signed and
stamped by the issuing solicitor or notary public. Such documents are only valid for 3 months maximum prior to
the date of the wedding – ideally the document is best obtained between 8 and 12 weeks prior to the wedding
date. The couple must ensure their validity at the time of application and on the actual wedding date. For residents
of Scotland, a Certificate of No Impediment is acceptable. Your local registrar provides this.
Important – Ensure that the document has the words ‘Solicitor’ or ‘Notary Public’ or if it is on letterhead paper
the heading must state ‘Solicitor’ or ‘Notary Public’. The company stamp must also state ‘Solicitor’ or ‘Notary
Public’.
There is no need to register your marriage when you get home. After the celebration of
the marriage, the Marriage Officer will forward a cer tified copy of the notice of marriage
to the local Embassy or Consulate of your native country.
Should you misplace your certificate, you will have to contact the Ministry of Interior in
Nicosia, who will issue a replacement document. If you wish to secure one or more
cer tified copies of the marriage cer tificate, you may apply to the Registration Department
Decree Absolute (in case of divorce)
of the Ministry of Interior in Nicosia. The charge for each cer tified copy is Euro 14.00
Death Certificate (in case of widow or widower)
(subject to change).
Adoption Certificate (in case of adoption)
Deed Pole Certificate (in case of a change of name) – must be stamped by a solicitor
Written Consent to be submitted to the Marriage Officer on application, if either party of the intended marriage is
less than 18 years of age. This must be signed by the father of such party, or by the mother if the father is deceased
or incapable of consenting, and failing that, by the legal guardian of such party.
These requirements apply to British passport holders only. All other nationalities must refer to their respective
government agencies for accurate information regarding the necessary paperwork.
