June Newsletter - Highland Chamber of Commerce
June 2007 Highland Chamber of Commerce Volume 2, Issue 4 CHAMBER NEWS www.highlandillinois.com NEW MEMBERS Message from the Chamber President—George Marron The Chamber is truly a special organization. It is made up of an increasing number of members with a Board of Directors who are a diverse group of individuals who volunteer their time and energy to accomplish the goals of the Chamber. I am amazed how membership continues to increase. I continually ask myself how the Chamber can best serve its membership. Our Executive Director, Jami Jansen, compiled a list of some of the benefits and projects for Chamber members. A few noteworthy projects and benefits are: Business After Hours networking events, Chamber gift certificate program, ribbon cutting ceremonies, shop Highland promotion, direct referrals, newsletters, website, annual dinner and awards banquet, gift guide, and lobby displays. The Chamber sponsors and is involved in numerous community events, such as the Peanut Butter and Jam Festivals, Street Art Festival, City Clean-Up Day, community tours, Lighted Christmas parade, Christmas decorations on the square, business inquiries, the Secretary of State mobile drivers license service, and time, temperature and weather line. Your Chamber is an important voice when legislation or ordinances may effect how we do business in the City of Highland as well as the State of Illinois. This is my last letter as President of the Highland Chamber of Commerce. I would like to thank all the people who have helped me this past year, with special thanks to our Executive Director, Jami Jansen, and our Assistant Director, Stacey Howard, as well as the other officers, Marilyn, Kevin and Howard. I know in my heart that the Highland Chamber of Commerce will continue to grow and continue to promote and benefit its membership as well as the City of Highland. It is also a great opportunity for local businesses and civic organizations to get involved in the community. We always have an array of vendors each week—offering everything from pizza to ice cream...not to mention the free peanut butter & jam sandwiches and popcorn that are available each week, compliments of our wonderful Parks & Rec staff! So, you are sure to find something to enjoy for your Friday lunch hour! Whether your business or organization has an upcoming event or a special to promote or you just want to have a visible presence at this unique community event, the PB&J festivals are a great way to promote local business. So, if you would like to be a part of the Peanut Butter & Jam fun on Fridays, contact the Chamber office. We’d be happy to forward a vendor form to you. A MEMBER OF YOUR HIGHLAND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BOARD of DIRECTORS I was born in Highland to Pete and Jane (Luitjohan) Korte. As the fourth of seven children, I was raised in Highland and attended St. Paul Catholic Elementary and High Schools. I studied Graphic Design @ SIU-E and received my Bachelor of Science in Fine Arts in 2000. I have two children, Samantha 16, a Junior, and Benjamyn 13, a Freshman; both attend Mater Dei Catholic High School in Breese. My family, work and educational experiences have helped shape my character. While putting myself through college, I held various positions in different organizations. I have been a Office Coordinator for D'Arcy Macius Benton & Bowles in St. Louis, a Graphic Designer for B-Line, a Supervisor for Cygan-Delaney Catering, and a Photographer/Graphic Designer for the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows. Through my work experiences, I gained a better understanding of how people work together, insight into effective leadership, and an appreciation for business and community partnerships. Currently, I manage the Public Relations and Marketing efforts for Korte & Luitjohan Contractors, Inc., a family-based business that has experienced significant growth over the past four decades. I started with Korte & Luitjohan in 2001 and enjoy the opportunity to work closely with my parents, two brothers, three in-laws and other extended family members. In addition to this role, I manage three storage facility properties: Executive Drive Mini Storage in Highland, Commerce Drive Storage in Trenton and Fuesser Road Mini Storage in Mascoutah. During the past three years, I have become more involved with the Chamber of Commerce. I have enjoyed assisting with their annual Valentine Dinner, Dance & Auction fundraiser for the past two years. Having joined the Street Art Festival committee last year, I am looking forward to another year of involvement with this unique community event where I will once again serve as the Food Vendor Chairperson. I am the newest member on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and I look forward to serving our community for many more years. It is nice to see the town I was born in. My parents only stayed in Highland a little while, and they ended up moving back to Australia. I would enjoy seeing your beautiful town one day, from what I have seen it appears to be the 'Jewel of Illinois'. “ Yours, Tony Darmanin If you haven’t checked out the Chamber website lately, I invite you to do so.
