Fiduciary Fun
Unbeknownst to the editor, there were two
scribes at the meeting this week. Regretfully
she didn’t know this until she received both in
my e-mail today. Never being one to waste
good work, this Fortarian will be from the
dynamic writing duo; Cameron and Knutson.
President Dave presided this week while his
wife, Bev, provided the toast to the queen.
Doing duty at the door for the evening was
Gloria Bagley while Bev Knutson ran the 50/50
draw.
There was one visiting Rotarian in attendance
at the meeting; our regular visiting Rotarian
from Kenora, Rod Riopel.

Treasurer Boris explains club finances
The speaker for Wednesday evening’s meeting
was Club Treasurer, Boris Cham. Boris
presented the Financial Report for 2010-2011
to the club members. This report was just for
the Club Accounts. He apologized for the fact

that we hadn't received a similar report for 2
years due to a MacAfee virus problem that
plagued our club software last year. He had to
actually re-enter 9 months of transactions
because of that bug.
He explained to us that he only controls our
General Account which is made up from
members' dues as well as any non-house
lottery generated funds
The normal process of setting the budget for
the General Account begins before July 1.
Committee Chairs forward their proposed
budgets to the Director in charge of their
Committee. The Director forwards these
budgets to the President who then passes
these on to the Treasurer.
Each month, the Treasurer presents a financial
statement to the Board of Directors. He
provides the club income and expenses, bank
reconciliation and aged trial balance which
show the status of club member’s accounts.
The dues, which are collected every six months,
are the primary source of income for club
operations after the payment of Rotary
International dues and District dues. Another
source of income for the Club Account is from
events such as bartending at the Cavendish
Cup.
He also administers our McKee account which
currently totals around $47,000.
Boris went over such items GIC account, the
cost of meals, and the Business Investor
Account. He gave a very complete explanation
of various items on the financial handout and
capably fielded questions from the floor as he
went through it.
Any members that weren't in attendance and
want to review the handout should contact
Boris.
A Questionable Fine
Dave Murray was our Finemaster he started off
by fining the president for no real reason other
than there was a precedent for it. John was
fined for asking Boris too many questions and
K.S. volunteered a dollar for his question too.
Dave then fined just about everyone except
Terry for not watching the Leafs victory over
Boston on Tuesday night. (Note.....Toronto won
again on Wed!)
Irene donated a happy buck because her son,
Steve, is coming into Thunder Bay on Thursday
in order to visit his family.
Distributing Funds
Peter gave a report on the
recent Allocations meeting. A
$300 McKee bursary was
approved as well as $1200 to
cover expenses for sending a
student to Ottawa for
Adventure in Citizenship last
year. We received a request
from the library for $15,000 for a parents'
reading room and the committee agreed to
give them $5,000.
Thanks for the Bursary
President Dave received a letter from the
Northern Ontario School of Medicine thanking
Fort William Rotary for providing support for
the bursary. Included in the letter, was an
invitation for a member of the Club, along with
a guest, to attend the Annual Donors' Reception
which will take place on Thursday, March 10,
2011. (Bob and Linda Hookham, along with
Dave and Bev Knutson, will be representing
our club at this event.)

Car to be Won
House Lottery
The members of Fort William Rotary have been
approached by the Thunder Bay Museum to
support the Museum in the sale of tickets for
their classic car raffle. The car being raffled this
year is a 1973 Dodge Challenger Rallye. The
draw takes place on October 9, 2011. If anyone
is interested, please contact Dave Knutson for
more information.
Rotarians can talk to Terry Cameron about
getting House Lottery tickets to sell. If anyone
is interested in selling tickets at the House,
please contact Boris Cham who is looking after
this until Robert Moore returns from his
vacation.
Speaking of tickets, Bob Hookham mentioned
that our House Lottery is officially underway
and tickets are at all the outlets. Terry
distributed tickets to members at the meeting,
and will have more tickets available to hand out
at our March 2nd meeting. Bob also
mentioned that the house is taking shape and
should be ready for open houses in early
March.
New Date for Board Meeting
this Month
President Dave announced the Board of
Directors meeting will be held on Wednesday,
February 23 at 7:00 p.m. at Genivar (Cook
Engineering) on S. Syndicate Avenue, because
of the holiday on Monday. Any member is
welcome to attend.

Irene told us the lighter
side of giving a parrot an
attitude adjustment.
Joan Krisko has stand-up posters for the House
Lottery which can be given to the ticket outlets
as well as posters for the Lottery which can be
displayed on walls. Joan also has sheets
explaining how to use the debit machines
which can be given to the ticket outlets.

on "Home on the Range".

Rotary Anniversary Dinner
Plaque for Years of Service
The Rotary Anniversary dinner will be held on
Friday, February 25 at the Columbus Centre,
301 S. May Street. Tickets are $25.00 per
person. The symposium is at 6:00 pm with
dinner starting at 7:00 pm. All proceeds from
the dinner are in support of PolioPlus. Contact
Irene Sottile if you are interested in purchasing
a ticket.
Fort William Rotary received a plaque for their
years of volunteer service at Shelter House.
John presented the plaque to President Dave.
John also mentioned that our own Jerry
Williams was re-elected to another 2 year term
to the Board of Directors for Shelter House.
The regular Rotary meeting held on
Wednesday, February 23 has been cancelled in
order that club members may attend the
Rotary Anniversary dinner.
Anyone donating items toward the silent
auction can bring these items to the Columbus
Centre on the afternoon of February 25 or can
give them to Irene.
Shelter House Update
On Monday, February 7, the Fort William
Rotary crew who volunteer at Shelter House
served an evening meal to one hundred and
forty-five people.
John, Gloria and Bette Ann recently attended
an appreciation dinner for Shelter House
volunteers and donors during which he was
presented with a plaque which recognized the
Club's efforts in supporting this worthwhile
cause. The guest speaker at the event was
Mayor Keith Hobbs.

Rob Riopel drew the ticket of the man sitting
next to him, Dave Murray. Unfortunately for
him, winning the pot just wasn't in the cards.
