Danielle, how long have you and your husband Joe been in business in
Truckee?
Truckee Sewing Co. has been in business since 2003. We started
through word of mouth doing repairs for the ski resorts and fire
department. Today we are a full service sewing shop specializing in
home upholstery and custom interiors. Our textile showroom offers a
full selection and variety of fabrics and a wide variety of foam, fill and
pillow forms.
Mindy and Paul how long have you been in business in Truckee?
Who are your clientele?
Our clientele covers a very wide spectrum. We enjoy working with the
Truckee locals, often getting to know many of them on a first name
basis. We also enjoy working with second home owners, as well as the
many commercial businesses in the area.
Running a small business and living in Truckee is a true
privilege. We are very proud of this community. It is so nice to work
close to where you live, having little to no commute time, and, of
course always having the option for a powder break when weather and
work permits!
Who are your clientele?
What has been the most rewarding project since you began in Truckee?
We consider almost all the projects we work on rewarding. We take a
great sense of pride in the quality of work we do as well as the
relationships we create with our clients. I think that one of the most
satisfying feelings is taking an old broken down piece of furniture,
destined possibly for the trash heap, and making it unique and new
again.
What has been the greatest challenge to you?
The greatest challenge to our business has been simply just that –
running a small business. Many people who are not in business for
themselves find it difficult to identify with the constant hurdles
and expenses a small business person must deal with. Running a
profitable and viable business is not always an easy task.
What are your business goals?
Our business goals are to increase our revenue and respectfully grow
with the changing needs of the community. To be able to create more
jobs, and slowly expand production, these are all high on the list.
Do you have any tips or pointers for other small business owners?
My tip for starting a new business is research, research, research! Make
sure there is really a market for what you want to promote or do. Have
proper financing in line, and prepare to work very hard.
What has benefitted our business most of all has really been word
of mouth and referrals from locals and other businesses.
What are some interests outside of work that you enjoy?
Being an avid disc golf player, I try to find as much time as possible to
get outdoors and play with my friends and co workers. The wide
variety of winter and summer sports here are what make all the hard
work worth it.
Paul: For the past 10 years or so, our retirement plans were about
owning a bed and breakfast. We spent most vacations at B&Bs in
other locales learning the trade, took B&B related business
courses, and perfected our breakfast recipes. We both spent a lot
of time in our youth around Lake Tahoe and knew we wanted to
come back. An opportunity arose that we took advantage of last
year and have owned the Donner Lake Inn for seven months.
Mindy: We have had the privilege of serving as hosts to people
from Truckee, throughout California and Nevada and across the
United States as well as a number of international visitors. We
have some people who come for winter snow activities, some for
the summer lake activities as well as those who wish to just have a
romantic getaway.
What has been the most rewarding project since you began in Truckee?
Mindy: With our backgrounds in education, we are both “people
persons” so sharing our home with others has been rewarding.
Especially rewarding was our ability to thank some veterans for
their military service by offering complimentary stays on Veterans
Day. A second rewarding experience was having guests get
married here at the Inn, with their plans to spend anniversaries
with us.
What has been the greatest challenge to you?
Paul: We have been so busy that we have not yet had the time to
properly assimilate into the community that we now call home.
We are looking forward to meeting new friends and neighbors.
What are your business goals?
Mindy: We want to continue to provide what our guests consider
exceptional lodging and five-star service. Our goal is to see many
of our guests return year after year and watch their families grow.
Do you have any tips or pointers for other small business owners?
Paul: Be an integral part of the community. Joining the Chamber
has given us the opportunity to network with other small business
owners in the community and we support each other.
What are some interests outside of work that you enjoy?
Paul: With just the two of us running the business, we have not
had a chance to explore everything that Truckee and Donner Lake
has to offer. Mindy is an academically trained historian and hopes
to be able to spend some time volunteering at the museum.
Mindy: Paul is a licensed pharmacist and is passionate about
teaching the youth of our community about the safe use of
prescription medications. In our free time, during the summer
season, you will find us canoeing on Donner Lake.
