Sierra Nevada
In the heart of the province
T
he Sierra Nevada district is well-communicated both with
the nearby Granada Costa Tropical and with the province’s
hinterland. The A 92, Andalusia’s arterial dual carriageway which
links up with the rest of the Iberian Península’s road network,
makes access easy from any point of departure. The dual carriageway reaches Granada whence radiate the different roads which
cross the district, reaching as far as Pradollano.
The Granada-Motril dual carriageway communicates the coast
with the district, as does the main road which climbs into the Sierra
Nevada.

I
ts towns and villages are in the heart of nature, maintaining
their traditions with the advantage of being halfway between
Granada and the peaks of the Sierra Nevada.
Rivers and water channels cross the district’s towns where silence
is all around, the ideal place to enjoy peace and quiet and to relax in
a welcoming family atmosphere. These towns are characterised by
the fertile farmlands of La Vega, forming picture postcard scenery
with the ever-present sentinel, the Sierra Nevada. Its history has
always been linked to that of the city of Granada. The origins of
many of these towns date back to when they were Islamic agricultural or silk-producing hamlets dependant on the capital.
The Muslim stamp is clearly visible in the network of irrigation
channels which collect the waters produced by the Spring thaws
on the peaks of the Sierra Nevada, transporting them la Vega, the
wisest way to make full use of them.

nestling at the feet of the Sierra Nevada are some charming
towns and villages which offer
visitors various services due to
the combination of the facts
that they belong the city’s metropolitan area and yet are in the
very heart of nature.

Only 9 km from Granada is
Dílar, one of the largest boroughs in the province. The dolmen surrounded by a cromlech,
to be seen near the Casa Rural,
is witness to its long history. The
water flowing from the Sierra
Nevada comes to life in Dílar,
where the babbling of its brooks
and water channels are an irresistible invitation to the visitor to
take a pleasant stroll.
2
Having left Gójar, surrounded by beautiful
scenery, we arrive at Ogíjares. These lands are the
birthplace of the famous
Flamenco cantaor Frasquito Yerbabuena, Flamenco is everywhere, as
its famous festival demonstrates. As we stroll
through its streets we can
admire its heritage and
enjoy its delicious gastronomy.
We then enter the Mancomunidad de Municipios
del Río Monachil joint
boroughs. This is an ideal
spot to relax after a busy
day in the mountains or
after the bustle of the city.
La Zubia, stuated between market gardens and irrigation channels,

is the first borough we come to, a typical small village of the Granada farmlands. Several tracks radiate out from the villages inviting
us to take peaceful strolls along them, through beautiful scenery
without neglecting a visit to its centuries-old Ilex tree or Arab Baths.
Its privileged position, in the very heart of the countryside makes it
a village with one of the highest concentrations of top-level sportsmen and women in Spain.
Cájar, was historically known for its importance as a silk producer.
Visitors are charmed by the tranquillity of both the town itself and
of its incomparable surroundings. Its traditions and gastronomy
make its visitors enjoy a way of life from yesteryear.
Our next stop is Huétor Vega where the mountains and fertile
valley meet. Being on a natural route, it has been inhabited since
Prehistory as the nearby important archaeological remains and the
ancient Camino de los Neveros (Ice Traders’ Route) demonstrate. As
we stroll through it streets, we can admire the products of its rich
hand crafts tradition.
8
Finally, we arrive in Monachil,
which is formed by three contrasting towns: Barrio de la
Vega, Monachil and Pradollano.
Its privileged position in the Si-

e begin this route in Cenes de la Vega, in the heart of the
fertile Vega Granadina plain and on the banks of the Genil river which irrigates its farmland. Its location between Granada
and the Sierra Nevada, between the valleys and the mountains,
makes it the ideal spot to take idyllic strolls or to practise activity
tourism.
Continuing on our way, we arrive in Dúdar, on the banks of Aguas
Blancas river. Following its course, surrounded by beauty spots, we
reach Quéntar, whose name tells us of its Islamic origins: Qariat
Quentar. Like nearby Granada, it fell to the Christians in 1492. Its
Morisco population remained until their expulsion following the Alpujarra Rebellion when Quéntar sheltered rebellious Moriscos, for
which the town was punished at the hands of John of Austria’s
troops. Not far away is the Quéntar
reservoir, attractive not only for its
1 Güejar Sierra and
beauty, but also for the range of serCanales reservoir
vices on offer there.

Returning to the Genil, we set out

the climb to the peaks of the Sierra Nevada. Which is intimately
linked to its river which divides it into two parts. The surrounding
country takes on a special beauty when the almond trees burst into
flower and during the Spring thaws when the Canales reservoir
reaches its full glory.

We recommend a stroll, following
the course of the Genil, to the reservoir from the Barrio del Zaidín quarter, situated in the upper part of the
town. Güéjar Sierra is the last town
on our route.
Its name speaks of its
Muslim origins when
Qaryat Walyar was a silkproducing town. Remains
of one of its two Islamic
fortesses can still be seen
on Cerro del Castillejo
hill. We recommend a
visit to its Renaissance
church, boasting a beautiful Mudejar coffered
ceiling as well as visiting
the Fuente de los Dieciséis Caños (sixteen-spout)
fountain, the Fuente de
la Plaza fountain and the
former public laundry, not
to mention the former
tram station, Estación del
Antiguo Tranvía de la Sierra.

This is scenery
dominated by steep
slopes and streams,
elements
which
make it an ideal spot
for lovers of mountain sports. Indeed,
there are limitless
possibilities on offer:
hiking, horse riding, and mountian
biking,
potholing,
paragliding,
rock
climbing etc. Moreover, its delicious gastronomy will delight
lovers of good food.
It is recommended
the visit to Maitena,
to enjoy, in summer,
the “natural pools”,
such as a trip to El
Chacón, in the road
of Güéjar Sierra to
the Vereda de la Estrella, a region shaded by cherry trees
from where departs
many roads.

he Sierra Nevada mountain range includes the highest peaks
in the Iberian Peninsula: Mulhacén (3,482 m. above sea level) 1
and Veleta (3,394 m.). Because of its rich and varied vegetation,
this area was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1986, a
Nature Park in 1989, and finally a National Park in 1999.
Sierra Nevada has twenty peaks that are over 3.000 metres
above sea level.
The ski lifts at the resort can carry 50,000 skiers per hour and 103
runs provide an area of 3.5 million
square metres for skiing.
The Sierra Nevada mountain range, with its National and Nature
Park, allows the practice of adventure tourism as well as skiing.
Many paths and routes, such as the GR-7 route, provide a broad
range of possibilities.
In this guide we include some of the paths marked by the Andalusian Regional Ministry of the Environment.
Sulayr — the mountain of the sun for the Moors — gives its
name to a long-distance path (GR-240) that runs for 300 kilometres around the mid-level mountains of the Sierra Nevada. Four of
its 19 sections fall within the area covered by this guide.
For the nine paths described below we give technical information
to help you to make the best choice, including MIDE.
Here is an explanation of the meaning of the various degrees of
the four symbols used.

After drinking from the spring, we set off southwards from the
back of the hermitage along a track that climbs gently among almond and olive groves. After 1.5 km,
we reach an irrigation pond, where we
leave the farmed areas to follow a track
that takes us up to a pine wood. The
terrain soon changes to dolomite sandstone and we can see how the vegetation around us adapts to the different
type of soil.
Still climbing, we reach the Cabreros
col, where, next to the ruins of an old
farmhouse, broad plains were once
used to grow cereal crops.
We then follow a steep track through
the gorse scrub, until reaching a final hill
that takes us to the Cerro de la Silleta, at
an altitude of 1,520 m.
3
By this point we have steadily climbed
560 m, so we can take a well-deserved
rest to gather our strength and enjoy
the splendid views. We can see several
three-thousand-metre peaks: Veleta
(3,396 m), Tajos de la Virgen (3,342–
3,179 m), Cartujo (3,150 m) and the
Caballo (3,011 m), extending out to the
Alpujarra district.

Sierra del Manar. At various points
along the way, lookout points reveal beautiful mountain landscapes,
such as those of the nearby peaks

We leave the path temporarily to

after 700 m, takes us to the “Ermita Vieja”, or “Old Hermitage”, so
called because until 1796 it housed the image of the Virgin of the
Snows that is currently kept in the new hermitage, Ermita Nueva.
We can replenish our fresh water supplies here at the fountain next
to a cistern.
Returning to the path, we head down in a north-easterly direction
among scrubland and reforested pines, along a track that takes us to
a broad dry river. We cross its sandy bed for 500 m and get ready for
the final effort on the route: climbing up to the Poca Leña hill.
Once again we can see extensive fields of crops in Dílar’s Vega, with
the sight of the Ermita Nueva in the background showing us the way
back, walking on the area’s clayey soils.

Our climb begins by the Cuerda del Trevenque, amid a spectacular
landscape of dolomite sandstone where gorse, aromatic plants and
isolated pine trees grow alongside highly specialised native species.
The path takes us to a new lookout point opposite the Trevenque
Peak (2,083 m)) and stark landscape of sandstone and steep hillsides.
Walking along the dry bed of the Búho gorge, where it is easy to
see a chough or kestrel flying, we climb up to an altitude of 1,700
m and a much leafier landscape. We head down through a pine forest which gets steadily thicker, with a notable increase in humidity
as we reach the crossing with the forest track up to the Chaquetas
col. Here we can refresh ourselves in the waters of the Aguas Blanquillas gorge, where we turn 180º to the right towards the Rosales

to the course of the river Dílar, with its exuberant gallery vegetation of poplars, willows, brambles, cane, gorse, wild rose and barberry bushes. Next to the river you will see green rocks known
as serpentine marble, carried down
from an abandoned quarry. Once polished, serpentine marble can be used
as an ornamental stone that has been
highly valued for monumental masonry
throughout history.
Leaving the river behind as it rushes

his path sets out from El Dornajo Visitors Centre, where you
can pick up information on the Sierra Nevada and its rich natural, cultural and ethnographic heritage.
This route is one of the ones that goes deepest into the heart of the
Sierra, climbing up to an altitude of 2,200 m at the San Francisco
refuge, which was built as a hostel in the early twentieth century
by a small group of Granada mountaineers known as “Diez Amigos
Limited”.
La coincidence at the beginning of the route with the road down
to Güejar Sierra by the Hotel del Duque requires some caution, but
we’ll soon turn off to the right along forest tracks and paths with
lovely views of the Calar de Güejar Sierra. Steadily climbing, after a
few kilometres we’ll be at nearly 1,900 m above sea level, near the
Tajos gorge, and most of the rest of the route continues at this level.
Our relaxed, comfortable hike runs along a natural balcony above
and parallel to the Genil valley, with splendid views of several threethousand-metre mountains, such as the Alcazaba (3,364 m), Puntal de Bacares (3,143 m), Atalaya (3,139 m) Tajos Negros de Covatillas and Picón de Jérez (3,088 m).
We continue for quite a long stretch through reforested pines into
the valley, crossing gorges including the Ánimas gorge, which when

Here we turn 90º to the south
for a few hundred yards until
we have left the gorge behind, picking up our previous
course once more; the route,
which runs level at an altitude
of 1,900 m, takes us into a
pine forest before climbing,
where the vegetation becomes broom and scrubland,
better adapted to the area’s
climate.
Leaving the Paco Luna farmhouse behind us, we enter
another pine wood which,
in the final climb, takes us
up to the Campos de Otero,
a broad plain where the San
Francisco refuge is located,
the end of our route.
The refuge conserves part of
the one built with great difficulty in 1915 next to what
was then known as the Peña
de la Mojonera, and is now
called Peñones de Francisco y
Campos de Otero in honour
of Don Benito del Campo y
Otero, the province’s civil governor at the time. The refuge
is now a landmark in honour
of the citizens of Granada
who so loved the Sierra Nevada in the early twentieth
century.

The trail runs along the Genil
basin to the river’s headwaters.
At the beginning (1) a steep hill
quickly raises our temperature
as we go deeper into the valley,
with its abundant ash-, mapleand chestnut-trees, dyer’s oaks
and common oaks.
At the beginning the route follows a broad, gently rising track.
We will soon see by the edge of
the path, on a low wall, an old
chestnut-tree nicknamed “El
Abuelo” (the old man).
After about an hour, we reach
the confluence of the river
Vadillo (2), where the landscape
splits into two narrow valleys.
Another path begins here, which
first goes down to the river and
then climbs up the “Cuesta de
los Presidiarios” (prisoners’ hill),
which also forms part of section 18 of the Sulayr trail. We,
however, will turn right at this
point, continuing on the same
path into the heart of the Sierra
Nevada. We now walk along a
broad path that was used decades ago to carry copper ore from
the Provadora, Estrella and Justicia mines.

The imposing bulk of the Alcazaba and Mulhacén now appear before us, at a point known as the “Viso de las Nortes”. After passing
by the mines, the path descends to cross the bridge over the river
Guarnón (3), which tumbles down from the Corral del Veleta, to
meet the Genil. From here on the path narrows as we approach the
fast-flowing waters of the Genil. From here on the path is known as
“Camino del Real”.
After passing close to the Justicia mine, another stretch takes us to
the confluence of the four gorges, the end of the route in the area
known as (4).
If you wish you can visit the Cueva Secreta (“secret cave”; a natural refuge used by goatherds)
which is a further thirty minutes’ walk away.
It is also possible to make
the return trip along a much
harder path that crosses the
river and then goes up the Lucía gorge and then the Aceral
and Calvario gorges, to link
with El Vadillo at the Cuesta de los Presidiarios. As this
path is more difficult, poorly
signposted and quite risky, we
advise going back the same
way we you came.
he first section of the Sulayr trail, which runs around the entire
Sierra Nevada, begins at kilometre point 22 on the road up to
the Sierra, behind the Hotel Don José, to follow the river Monachil.

For the first 6 km, the route runs along a broad, seldom-used forest track, which runs down to the river Monachil. At the beginning
of this part of the route we briefly climb through various different
species of pine trees, with an abundance of aromatic plants — sage,

Large poplar flank our path, which, after crossing the Barranco de

what is known as the “Camino de los Neveros” (snowmen’s path),
so called because it was used for many centuries to supply the city
of Granada with ice. This site also marks the watershed between the
rivers Genil and Monachil.
Sendero Sulayr - section 1
Leaving the lookout point and continuing to descend, we pass by
the Diéchar farmhouse and reach the river Monachil. Here the track
we have been following turns right towards Purche and Monachil.
We leave this track here and follow a path that passes by a livestock
corral and crosses the river to continue along the riverbank. Farther
on, passing over a chain, on the right we will see a spring where we
can refill our water bottles. We continue walking between sloes, maples, gorse, etc, until we reach the transition area between the Sierra
Nevada’s limestone and siliceous areas, at the Mojonera gorge.
Climbing up, we see an increasing number of oak trees growing on
the free-range pasture, and farther on we turn around a sharp curve
to leave the Mojonera gorge behind and enter the Manuel gorge.
Leaving the last oak trees behind us, we reach the crossing with the
path that runs from the Sierra Nevada ski resort.
The route continues to the right, passing through pasture until reaching the Cerro del Mirador col. The city of Granada lies at our feet,
with the high peaks of the Sierra Nevada to our right.
As we walk down, on both sides of our path we can see many aromatic plants, thorny shrubs and fine wild pine trees. On arrival at the
Matas Verdes col we leave the Monachil valley and link up with the
Cerro Huenes valley.
Descending among pine tress, we can see the pyramid-shaped peak
of the Cerro del Trevenque, and after a short section we reach the
Casa Forestal de la Cortijuela, at the head of the Huenes stream. The
botanical garden here features all the flora found on these sections
of the Sulayr. From here on we can opt to carry on along section 2 of
the Sulayr trail or retrace our footsteps.
We know walk gently downhill for a long stretch. Passing the Manolete gorge and Tajo del Zorro, a track on our left leads to the
San Jerónimo convent, although we will be turning right, to arrive
500 m farther on at a natural lookout point over the river Monachil
valley, which runs down from the 3,394 m of Veleta to the gulley at
Los Cahorros. From here we can clearly devise the two different rock
formations of the Sierra Nevada massif.

his interesting section runs along the slopes of the Dílar,
Dúrcal and Torrente rivers. You can clearly see how the
steady abandonment of farming activities has encouraged the recovery of such key sites as the oak forest of the Dehesa del Dílar,
the holm-oak forest of the river Dúrcal valley and the broom community of Peñamadura.
1
Our route begins by climbing up a forest track for several kilometres, passing alongside huge, twisted wild pines and the occasional yew. At a U-bend we leave the sharp silhouette of the
Trevenque (2079 m.), which is popular with mountaineers, on our
right, continuing up to the Martín col, the watershed between the
basins of the Monachil and Dílar rivers.

On the other side of the valley we can see the oak forest of the

Leaving the forest track, we follow a path that takes us down
through narrow gullies, leaving the crossing that leads to the old
serpentine-marble mine. A few minutes later we reach the river
Dílar, where we can stop to see the scaled dike to facilitate the
passage of trout.
Crossing the river over a bridge, we walk for a new metres parallel to the river before starting the steep climb up the Dehesa de
Dílar. After a short while, at a fork, we take the left path that keeps
on climbing. The route constantly zigzags, passing by the ruins of
old farmhouses and abandoned huts that have been replaced by
broom and oak trees.
We continue our climb, looking back occasionally to enjoy the
views. At an altitude of 1,980 m, the path turns to the right, at first
levelling out and then going down around the Loma de Peñamadura. The Alayos de Dílar appear before us at the same height, with
the silhouette of the Cerro del Trevenque behind, and Granada’s
Vega off in the distance.
36
We now leave the river Dílar valley to enter the basin of the river
Dúrcal, entering the Lecrín Valley district and the southern slopes of
the Sierra Nevada. We follow a path clinging to the rock and overlooking the river Dúrcal, at the site known as Cruz del Contadero.
From here we can see impressive cuttings such as the Buitreras,
caused by centuries of erosion by the river, and opposite, the impressive bulk of the Cerro del Caballo looming over us at a height
of over 3000 m.
We walk down through an area where wild boar and foxes are
commonly found and arrive in a holm-oak forest with large cuttings, continuing on down along a stepped path cut in the rock.
