Some new series start this month and I sincerely hope the magazine will reflect wider views than the traditional parish magazine. The magazine aims to be financially independent and I am grateful for a grant of £150 from Hoby with Rotherby Parish Council towards the start-up costs. Since the cost of printing the magazines exceeds the subscription, we are indebted to those individuals and companies who advertise. Without them, the magazine could not survive. If you or your organisation would like to advertise, please contact Josie Brown. I would also urge the valiant band of distributors in the villagers to collect the 2016 subscriptions (£8.00) as soon as possible. Collected subscriptions should be delivered to Malcolm Britton for banking. If you don’t receive a magazine and would like to do so, please contact Simon Blake. The future of the magazine will be reviewed in 6 months’ time. Before then all articles, editorial letters, reports, photographs of local events etc, etc will be most welcome. 2 FRISBY PLAYERS CELEBRATE 20 YEARS Well there we were again, huddled in the small room off the main hall in Frisby. It has doubled up as our dressing room since the village hall was extended. Before that we had a small caravan at the side door in which we sat, waiting for our turn to go on. We had been rehearsing for several months prior to the performance nights and this was the moment we had been waiting for; stepping onto the stage and “treading the boards” before an audience. A lot of hard work and commitment had gone into the preparation for the show. Would the audience be receptive? Would we all remember our lines? Would we be able to put across the humour of the lines? “Old Actors Never Die … They Simply Lose The Plot” was an inspired choice for our autumn 2015 production, with a first time Director in charge – Kate Baxter. The cast was made up of fairly experienced actors and Kate’s casting was absolutely spot on! Set in a retirement home for retired theatricals, the three Mrs Sullivans are thrilled when a new resident turns out to be a long-time friend ex actor of 212 films (even though he has been typecast in most of them!). However, they are not so thrilled when they realise the next new resident, a French actor called ‘George Faberge’, turns out to be not French at all, but their philandering exhusband on the run from Russian gangsters! The result was a hilariously chaotic farce as the larger than life characters in the play became increasingly embroiled in a ridiculous and outrageously funny situation. We were 3 3 rewarded by a good turnout each night and very appreciative audiences, who laughed loudly as the plot unfolded. The Frisby Players amateur dramatic group always needs more members, not only as performers, but also to help back stage and with front of house. We try to put on some form of village entertainment twice a year, in the autumn and the spring, but with people are so busy these days and it becomes increasingly difficult to cast our plays. But we are endeavouring to continue, to keep this energetic and enthusiastic village activity going. For more information, please ring Julie (01664) 434994 or Kate 434529. OR you can email [email protected] THE CHILDREN’S SOCIETY 2015 I would like to thank you for all the support you have given to the Children’s Society. It has made a real difference to the lives of the vulnerable children and young people we help: from runaways to young carers, they all require our time and support. I am pleased to tell you that the box collection in the Upper Wreake this November came to £626.72, this is very much appreciated. If you don’t have a box already, and would like one, you can contact me, and I can get you one. I would also like to point out that the Collection from the Christingle Service goes to the Children’s Society, and would like to thank all of those involved with that service at Frisby Parish Church on Christmas Eve. He has been delivering post to our two villages and outlying farms since Ron Greenwood retired and the Village Shop closed. At a recent Parish Council meeting it was agreed to make a gift to Brian and to arrange a collection for him from the Hoby and Ragdale residents, and then make a presentation to him in January after the Christmas rush and shortly after Brian completes his last postal round on December 31st. The Parish Council and all the villagers wish to say a big thank you to Brian for being the familiar face of the Royal Mail for so long, and for his friendship. Everyone wishes you a very happy and long retirement. Hoby with Rotherby Parish Council 8 8 Hoby and District Local History Society Events – 2016 “Thrussington and Hoby: A comparison of their changing use of land through the 18th to 20th centuries” by Celia Cotton Hoby & District Village Hall, Wednesday 20th January, 7.30pm Celia will compare and contrast two Wreake valley villages, Hoby and Thrussington, drawing upon a range of original records to consider the use of land during the 18th to 20th centuries. She will also draw inferences from the naming of fields, an interest developed during her MA studies. Celia came to Leicester to study maths in 1975, married a fellow student and then worked for the County Council as a teacher (briefly!) then in IT and project management, taking early retirement in 2012. She has been an enthusiastic family researcher for forty years and recently studied for an MA in English Local History at Leicester. Currently she is enjoying looking at whole settlements and the landscapes they inhabit and has enough projects lined up to keep her busy for years to come. All are welcome; the price for non-members is £2.00 (pay on door). Every year we give a bible to any child born in the village or who comes to live in the village. At the age of 8 we give a dictionary, at 10 an atlas, at 16 a £25 book voucher and this year we have introduced at the age of 18 a £50 book voucher which will help young adults carrying on with their education. This year Myles Cooter was given a dictionary, Anna Veasey an atlas, £25 Book Vouchers were given to Millie Spencer, Alex Horobin, Rosie Giles, Lydia Hemsley, Emily March and £50 vouchers to Bethany Lawrence, Harry Bysouth - Kemp and Ellen Machin. For the last few years we have taken the children and parents on an educational trip. We have been to The National History Museum, Kew Gardens, Bletchley Park, The York Railway Museum and Chatsworth House. This year we visited The National Memorial Arboretum to coincide with National Armed Forces Day. The children saw marching bands and displays from army dogs and the medical core. The many different memorials to all the conflicts around the world were very interesting and the day ended with a spitfire display. FOSG Christmas Dinner Dance Frisby Old School Group hosted their annual Xmas dinner dance on Saturday 12th December in Frisby Village Hall. The hall was beautifully decorated and tables and chairs donated by BE Event Hire. The evening was very well supported with 92 people sitting down to a 3 course meal and then entertained with an auction for a Leicester Tigers package and a child’s mud motorbike, both kindly donated by local villagers. A raffle was also held and then everybody danced the night away. It is thought to have raised around £2000 which will help to replace windows in the toilet block of the Old School. The committee would like to say a big thank you to all who helped make the evening an enjoyable and worthy one. 10 10 Community Lunch The Parish Community Hub held its most recent get together at the Blue Bell Inn at Hoby. Thank you to all who came along and joined us on that day. The next event will be at: Sysonby Knoll, Melton Mowbray. Tuesday 19th January 2016 Lunch at 12.00 noon for 12.30pm start. We do hope that you will be able to join us. If you would like more information contact either: Annette Piper 840627 Davina Bates 454201 Beryl Newman 0116 2603247 Vic Allsop 434697 or Maureen Coleman 434120 A big thank you to every one of our many valuable volunteers. In particular those who volunteer to drive and collect people for the Community Lunches. They are able to pick up anyone from our villages who would like transport. We are always looking out for new volunteer drivers, so do please get in touch with one of the committee if you could help out from time to time. Also a big thank you to all those who host our lunches and support the ethos of bringing people together to meet up with each other and to share conversation over an enjoyable meal. Do come and join us! The Community Lunch Team IN THE GARDEN with Vida (a new series of topical tips) DECEMBER It was time to make my door wreath so I went to the garden in search of greenery, berries and anything else I thought would look good for the whole of the Christmas period. Well, I needn’t have worried about quantity: still looking good in my garden were Gazania, Sedum, Chrysanthemum, Geranium (in the greenhouse), Primrose, Stokesia, Potentilla, Bergenia and more. It’s my garden and I didn’t realise there was so much still in flower, which just goes to prove how mild the weather was at the end of the 2015 season, most unsuitable for my wreath so I went for the traditional holly, ivy and crab apple with a smattering of berries. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and got lots of rest so you are ready for the start of the new season of gardening. 11 11 JANUARY For those lucky enough to have a veg plot, it is still proving productive with brassicas being the main seasonal vegetable. For those who do not have enough room to grow vegetables outdoors, why not try cress, mustard, radicchio and micro leaves on your window sills? If you have an outdoor space and the ground is not frozen, take some time to consider what you would like to plant and where. If there are a few weeds popping their heads up, hoe them off or just give them a pull out. Both your ground and your body will appreciate a small amount of work done in the garden. Greenhouses heated or not need to be checked for slugs and bugs hiding in corners and under staging, anywhere really. They do like to make mischief when you’re not looking – so keep looking. The more light you can get into your greenhouse, the warmer it will be so keep the glass clean to allow the light in. For the rest of January, I’m not going to do anything except make sure I have ordered my seeds, keep checking my stored apples and potatoes and dream of the time when I can get back on to the land and start growing. Enjoy your rest! Vida Gregory is the Secretary of Hoby & District Horticultural Show NEW YEAR DARTS KNOCKOUT After two years away, Charity Events will be hosting a winner-takes-all darts competition on 9th January at the Stute, Asfordby Hill to raise funds for Rainbows Children's Hospice. How many can you find? They all appear in Chambers Dictionary. (Answers in the February Magazine) “I got into my son’s car, turned the wheel and drove out of the garage, when my car phone rang. My darling wife, Chris, had left her ring in her friend’s Cadillac, across Melton, where she often chose to visit. I assured her that all is well and I was able to fetch it. So, leaving the next roundabout, I punched the postcode into my Satnav and found the correct route. Having driven over a yellow light, unaware of a nearby cop, I kept to the limit with a keen eye on the speedo, switched off the supercharger and decided, for fear of a speeding gun or camera, to go by the back way. I drove round a central ring road, listening to a brilliant psalm on the radio, and approached the top end of the drive. I didn’t know the number so I had to ask a teenage ruffian in a hooded top, a housewife, some men working up pylons and a woman taking a stroll, before I pulled up outside the house. I parked by the kerb as swiftly as I dare, just as the friend of Chris produced the ring.” Tony Geary 16 16 HOBY & DISTRICT WI 2016 gets off to a traditional start with: January Supper Thursday 7th January Relax after the hectic festive season and enjoy an evening of good food and good wine with good friends. We have recently learned that the Revd Dr Peter Hooper will hold the joint post of Area Dean of Framland and Rector of Ab Kettleby, Holwell and Asfordby. Peter is well known in this area from the time he spent as Curate at St Mary’s, Melton Mowbray from 2006-2010. Since then he has been team rector of the Bradgate Team. From 2011 he has been Area Dean of Sparkenhoe East and also Diocesan Rural Officer. Peter preached at the Brooksby Lambing Service last March. From January 1st Peter will be Acting Area Dean of Framland and we offer him a warm welcome as he will effectively become our Priest-in-Charge until a team rector is appointed. At the time of writing we are about halfway through our Christmas Carol Services. We had a memorable event at Brooksby this year with 45 members of The Ratcliffe Chorale, under the baton of Anne de Graeve, providing a concert of Christmas music and readings with congregational carols. Many thanks to the choir, to Anne and to organist Ron Berry. Also many thanks to Brooksby Melton College who again provided the very welcome mulled wine, sausage rolls and mince pies in Brooksby Hall during the interval. Rotherby Carol Service was also a memorable event and I am grateful to Sue Smith for putting it together and all those who decorated the church, took part in the service or provided the splendid refreshments. A highlight was the presentation of awards, financed by the Catherine Gregory Trust, to young people of the village. (See page 10) This year the PCC agreed to raise money at the carol services for the Bethlehem Arab Society for Rehabilitation (BASR) and the Al Shurooq School for Blind Children in Bethlehem. BASR was founded in 1960 as one of Leonard Cheshire’s homes. Nowadays, it is a non-profit, non-government organization that is nationally recognized for the comprehensive medical and rehabilitation services it renders to beneficiaries from different parts of Palestine, particularly those with disabilities, regardless of their gender, age, religion or social class. So far over £300 has been raised and the final total will be published next month. 23 Where Where Where totoWorship Worship to Worship inin in January January January 2016 2016 2016 South South South West West West Framland Framland Framland Parish Parish Parish January January January 33 3 8.30am 8.30am 8.30am Holy HolyCommunion Communion Holy Communion Christmas Christmas Christmas 22 210.30am 10.30am 10.30am Family Family Worship Family Worship Worship 10.30am 10.30am 10.30am Family Family Worship Family Worship Worship 10.30am 10.30am 10.30am Holy HolyCommunion Communion Holy Communion 4.00pm 4.00pm 4.00pm Holy HolyCommunion Communion Holy Communion Frisby FrisbyFrisby Rotherby Rotherby Rotherby Burrough Burrough Burrough Gaddesby Gaddesby Gaddesby Great Great Dalby Great DalbyDalby January January January 10 10 10 8.30am 8.30am 8.30am Holy HolyCommunion Communion Holy Communion Ashby Ashby Folville Ashby Folville Folville Baptism Baptism Baptism of of of 10.30am 10.30am 10.30am Holy HolyCommunion Communion Holy Communion Kirby Kirby Bellars Kirby Bellars Bellars Christ ChristChrist 10.30am 10.30am 10.30am Holy HolyCommunion Communion Holy Communion Little Little Dalby Little DalbyDalby 10.30am 10.30am 10.30am Family Family Worship Family Worship Worship Thorpe Thorpe Satchville Thorpe Satchville Satchville January January January 17 17 17 8.30am 8.30am 8.30am Holy HolyCommunion Communion Holy Communion Hoby Hoby Hoby Epiphany Epiphany Epiphany 22 2 10.30am 10.30am 10.30am Morning Morning Morning Worship Worship Worship Ragdale Ragdale Ragdale 10.30am 10.30am 10.30am Holy HolyCommunion Communion Holy Communion Pickwell Pickwell Pickwell 10.30am 10.30am 10.30am Holy HolyCommunion Communion Holy Communion South South Croxton South Croxton Croxton 3.00pm 3.00pm 3.00pm United United United Covenant Covenant Covenant Service Service Service Great Great Dalby Great Dalby MCDalby MC MC 3.00pm 3.00pm 3.00pm United United United Covenant Covenant Covenant Service Service Service Somerby Somerby Somerby MCMC MC 6.00pm 6.00pm 6.00pm Evensong Evensong Evensong Thorpe Thorpe Satchville Thorpe Satchville Satchville January January January 24 24 24 8.30am 8.30am 8.30am Holy HolyCommunion Communion Holy Communion Twyford Twyford Twyford Epiphany Epiphany Epiphany 33 3 10.30am 10.30am 10.30am United United United Covenant Covenant Covenant Service Service Service Frisby FrisbyFrisby 10.30am 10.30am 10.30am Holy HolyCommunion Communion Holy Communion Somerby Somerby Somerby 4.00pm 4.00pm 4.00pm Christingle Christingle Christingle South South Croxton South Croxton Croxton January January January 31 31 31 10.30am 10.30am 10.30am United United United Group Group Service Group Service ServiceBrooksby Brooksby Brooksby Epiphany Epiphany Epiphany 44 4 Wednesdays Wednesdays Wednesdays9.15am 9.15am 9.15am Holy HolyCommunion Communion Holy Communion Frisby FrisbyFrisby MC MC==Methodist Methodist MC = Methodist Centre/Church Centre/Church Centre/Church VHVH = Village = Village VH =Hall Village Hall Hall Please PleasePlease note notethat that note during during that the during theinterregnum interregnum the interregnum in in 2016 2016 some in some 2016 services some services may services may be subject be may subject be tosubject to to alteration alteration alteration atatshort short atnotice. notice. short Please notice.
