We are not showing this year for the first time in many years due to circumstances that did not allow enough time for getting the sheep ready. Although I will miss not showing, it is not quite the same with my daughters grown up and out of 4-H and no grandchildren yet to take their place. After the fair comes the beginning of the school year around here. Just as students prepare for the first day of school, we are getting ready for the fall lambing season. Setting up the lambing pens, vaccinating the ewes for overeating, and bringing the first ewes to lamb off pasture are a few of the preparations being made before the first lambs come. Just as students anxiously await starting their new courses or meeting their new teachers, I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of the offspring of our new stud rams. Did we choose rams that will improve our flock? Was the nutrition of the ewes adequate for them to produce large and healthy lambs? Did we put the right ewes in with the right rams? These questions will be answered as the lambs are born and as they grow. As most of you know improvements to your flocks take time and effort. As we attempt to make changes to better our sheep, sometimes we think that we are going in the right direction, but we actually may be taking a step backward in our breeding program. Our association continues to face many challenges. As the board of directors attempts to make changes to improve the group and the breed, some may work out and others may not. Sometimes we move too fast for some and too slow for others. At the board of directors meeting held during the National Show and Sale at Reno in May, we discussed the results of the survey sent out earlier in this year. As we went over the responses, we were disappointed at the low percentage of the breeders that responded. The board felt the need for more of you to take part in this process. If you have not filled out a survey yet, we are giving you until Louisville to respond. Make your opinions known. I would to say a big thank you to Frank Tiffany for serving on the board the past three years. He has been a valuable part of the board and will continue to be the webmaster for our website. The board looks forward to working with Hoop Peterson again as he begins his second time on the board. Good luck with fall lamb crop and I hope to see many of you at NAILE in November. Mike Galleher, CDC President 6 2009 Fall pt1 hpc.qxp:09fallnews 10/14/09 11:17 AM Page 7 continued from cover Dorset Association. National Officers Sarah Bush, MO; Troy Longenecker, PA and Monica Ebert, KS were on hand to lead an informal meeting of the group. Kaitlyn Verhaeghe, IN who also is a National Officer, was attending the show also but due to the long show schedule was very busy during lunch. CDC Eastern Director Melanie Barkley did a fun breed standard education activity with the junior Dorset exhibitors. Over 150 hotdogs and hamburgers were served to Dorset exhibitors and their families. Thank-you to the Bush, Passwater and Betts Families for all of their assistance with the BBQ!! Without your help it would not of been possible to get all our exhibitors fed in a timely manner. THANK-YOU!! Show pictures and show results appear in the Junior Show Results section of this newsletter. I would also like to thank the Dorset judge, Evan Snyder, Yukon, OK for the excellent job he did placing the classes. He told me he really enjoyed judging the show because he had such a great selection of quality individuals to work with. The highly coveted Top Gun Awards went to Olivia Waggoner, East Berlin in the Polled Show and Sarah Bush, Blairstown, MO won the Horned Dorset Top Gun Award. Many of the Dorset exhibitors placed in the top five of other competitions including promotional, judging contests, basketball tournament and showmanship classes. They are as follows: Natalie Harmeyer, IN; Gabrielle Garrison, SC; Breanna Waild, NY; Sarah Bush, MO; Ridge Betts, DE; Kassidy Oliger, IN; Ethan Hodel, IL; Thomas Crome, IL; Ben Lawyer, IL; Emma Johnson, OH; Sidney DeVries, IL; Sarah Johnson, OH; Kylie Schakel, IN; Olivia Nichols, KY; Cole Saylor, OH and Laurie Fitch, OK. Dorset breeders were very well represented in the Scholarship program as Anna Trotter, IN; Trent Nichols, KY and Sarah Bush, MO all were selected to receive an All-American Scholarship. Congratulations to all!! The All-American in Ohio had a tremendous amount of local support from the Ohio Dorset Association and Ohio Junior Dorset Association. A special thank-you to all those breeders and members including Becky Saylor, Joy & Kara McCarthy, and Roger High. A very special thanks goes to Pat Myers, who organized the entire Ohio effort for the show. Thank-you to the special donators we had for the Dorset show including the two ewe lamb donators Twin Oaks Dorsets and Mark Iughhun Family; special monetary donators Thomas Walsh, Titan Fan, Purple Ribbon Farms; all the class sponsors and breeders that bought raffle tickets. Thanks to all of you the Dorset breed was the leader in support for their show and exhibitors!! Next year the AllAmerican Junior Show will be July 2-4, 2010. It will be held at Michigan State University’s Livestock Pavillon in East Lansing, Michigan. Thanks to Tom for his service to the CDC! ANN STAVER Ann Staver, 82, died Saturday April 18, 2009 at her home in Palmyra, PA. Born October 3, 1926 in Vestaburg, PA. a coal mining village, she was the daughter of the late John and Sophia Buganich, Ukranian immigrants, who resided on a farm in Berks County, PA. Ann grew up on a dairy farm, earned a degree in agronomy from Penn State University and was a pioneer for women in agriculture. When her children reached school age, Ann returned to the classroom as a science teacher at Swatara Junior High School until her retirement in 1993. Ann was a faithful community member of East Hanover Township, Dauphin County as a PTA, school bard, and zoning board board member, a swimming instructor, girl scout leader and poll volunteer. She was an active participant in the Pennsylvania agriculture community as a 4-H leader, member of the Lebanon County Farm Women, Manada Nature Conservancy, and a founding coordinator of the PA Sheep to Shawl competition. Following Ann’s marriage to Ken. the Stavers started farming and raising a family on their Dauphin County farm, and 14 combined their talents and energy into a lifelong dedication to agriculture and the sheep industry of Pennsylvania. She was co-owner with Ken, of a purebred flock of Polled Dorset Sheep, Ovine Alley Dorsets, for 40 years. Ann served on the Continental Dorset Club Board of directors as the Eastern Director from 1982-1987. Ann also served on the search committee for a new breed secretary in 1998. Ann will be sorely missed in the purebred Dorset industry. Her and Ken were a fixture at many Eastern sheep activities including the New England Sale, Keystone Sale, KILE, Eastern Stud Ram Sale, PA Farm Show and Penn Ram Test Sale. Ann was a strong promoter of the Dorset breed and started out many young people in the breed. Surviving her are her husband of 60 years, Kenneth W. Staver; their children Dr. Charles Staver; Dr. Julia Staver and Dr. Kenneth Staver, Jr.; sisters, Margaret Barnes and Martha Gallagher; grandchildren, Carla and Ben Staver, Sophia Pifer, and Hilary, Charlotte and Warren Staver. In lieu of flower, memorial contributions may be made in Ann’s memory to the Grantville Area Food Pantry, P.O. Box 2, Grantville PA. 2009 Fall pt1 hpc.qxp:09fallnews 10/14/09 11:17 AM Page 15 15 2009 Fall pt1 hpc.qxp:09fallnews 10/14/09 11:17 AM Page 16 DORSET COMMERCIAL CONNECTION Steps to Insure Lamb Quality for the Consumer By Melanie Barkley PSU Extension Educator Media coverage of food products finds many consumers becoming skeptical about the quality of the foods that they are eating. As a sheep producer, there are a number of steps you can follow to insure that the consumer will receive a high quality product and have an enjoyable eating experience. Here are some considerations to help insure that a consumer enjoys eating lamb: Identification: In order to keep accurate flock records, it is important to have all your animals identified. This is very important for tracking any treated animals in your flock as well as keeping track of pedigrees for registered stock. Injections and Antibiotics: Regardless of the route of administration for injectable products, scar tissue will form at the injection site. As a producer, your goal is to minimize the damage from injections. When given a choice, select a subcutaneous product (given under the skin) over an intramuscular product (given in the muscle). Another important point is to always give injections in the neck. There is a triangle that is formed from the shoulder blade, the spine at the bottom of the neck and the cartilage at the top of the neck. All injections should be given in this area, with not more than 6 to 8 cc given in one location. Choose an appropriate length and gauge of needles used for injections. For subcutaneous injections, one half inch in length and 18 or 20 gauge is sufficient. One inch needles can be used for intramuscular injections. Follow dosage instructions carefully when treating any animal and record withdrawal dates so that no medication residues remain in the meat. A good rule of thumb is to record the date, which animals were treated, what they were treated with, the dosage and the withdrawal date. You may also want to include product serial numbers in your records to follow up if a Maintain up to date records of any medication products given to livestock. Records should include date, product used, who was treated, dosage and withdrawal date. product does not work properly. Be sure to use products that are approved for use in sheep unless under the direct supervision of your local veterinarian. And, remember that feed additives may only be fed to the species listed on the product label. Animal Handling: Animal handling is important to prevent bruising on carcasses and to keep stress levels low for the animal until they are harvested. Check all handling facilities and trailers for any areas where an animal could become bruised or cut. Biosecurity: In order to provide a high quality product for consumers, sheep producers should follow some basic biosecurity principles for keeping their flock healthy. Establish a biosecurity plan for your flock that includes a protocol for any visitors on your farm. In addition, provide an isolation area for any animals returning to your farm, or arriving at your farm for the first time from another farm. Always give injections in the neck of an animal and choose products given subcutaneously to minimize tissue damage. Flock Management Plan: Develop a health management plan for your flock to keep the animals healthy and prevent illness. This plan can include anything from routine health treatments to deworming schedules, mortality disposal and marketing. Don’t forget to include biosecurity as part of the plan. Housing and Facilities: Providing adequate fencing, shelter, ventilation, feeder space, and watering systems will help to keep animals healthy as well as growing rapidly. This area certainly provides economic benefits to producers as well as presents a positive image to the public. Nutrition: Meeting nutrient requirements for animals will promote healthy animals. Keep contaminants such as manure, fuels, pesticides, and pet foods away from feed sources and feeding areas. Also, secure grain sources to keep out critters: rodents, raccoons, opossums, and cats. And, don’t forget to clean the watering systems and feeders on a regular basis. Record keeping: In addition to breeding and lambing records, keep detailed records on medication treatments and deworming. Keeping track of sheep with chronic problems can be useful when selecting animals to cull from the flock. All these items work together to insure that consumers receive high quality lamb and lamb products. They also help to reduce processing wastes which in turn can boost prices that packers are willing to pay for lambs. Why not take a look at your own operation and identify any areas where you could make changes to improve the quality of lamb coming from your farm or ranch. For more information on sheep quality assurance, visit the Colorado State University website at http://www.colostate.edu/programs/SSQA/ 16 2009 Fall pt1 hpc.qxp:09fallnews 10/14/09 11:17 AM Page 17 2009 PENNSYLVANIA RAM TESTS RESULTS The Pennsylvania Ram Test Sale was held August 1, 2009 at the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Livestock Evaluation Center in Pennsylvania Furnace, PA. Congratulations! 17 2009 Fall pt1 hpc.qxp:09fallnews 10/19/09 2009 DORSET EWE FUTURITY UPDATE The Dorset Ewe Futurity Program has been very active this year with a lot of nominations and point records forms coming into the CDC office. Without your support this successful futurity program would not be possible! A total of $5250 has been raised to pay out to the participants of the polled and horned ewe lamb divisions. On the back cover of this newsletter is a list of all the nominators! We were fortunate to have five group nominators this year. 10:22 AM Page 18 YOUTH NEWS Riverwood Farms Superior Farms, Spilde Brothers, Olivia Waggoner and the Cassell Family were group nominators at the 2009 sales. 231 ewe lambs have been nominated this year, 192 polled ewe lambs and 39 horned dorsets. Of those, 84 have been tattooed by their new junior owners for participation in the futurity program. To date the CDC office has received point record forms from 48 of these junior owners. Don’t forget that you don’t have to show at a regional junior show to be eligible for premiums but exhibitors are still rewarded for attending regional shows as they are awarded double points. These point record forms need to be received in the CDC office within 21 days of the date of the show or they will not count. They also need to be signed by show management. Also, the deadline to send in Regional Point Record forms into the CDC Office is Nov. 9th. This allows the office enough time to tabulate final regional placing before Louisville. Those regional points will carry over to your Louisville junior show placing if you are attending that show to compete for the separate Louisville premiums. The yearling ewe division has had a record number of 9 yearlings nominated. Keep sending those point record forms in on the yearling ewes. The yearling ewe futurity will also end at the National Junior Dorset Show in Louisville like the ewe lamb program. All the regional polled and horned ewe lamb winners will be announced and recognized at the National Junior Association Meeting on Saturday, November 14th in Louisville. Immediately after the junior shows on Sunday, November 15th, the final national placings will be announced in the polled ewe lamb, horned ewe lamb and yearling ewe futurities. Awards will be given out along with the breeder plaques. The futurity points are updated on a regular basis on the CDC website to keep everyone appraised of point totals. We do this so you can make sure that the CDC office has received all your point record forms. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Deb Hopkins at (401)647-4676. NATIONAL JUNIOR DORSET ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING TO BE HELD IN LOUISVILLE The National Junior Dorset Breeders Association will hold its annual meeting in Louisville on Saturday night, November 14, 2009 at 7:00 PM in the Kentucky Exposition Center.
