Your gift could change a student’s life! From The President by Ronald E. Manahan, Th.D. Why Grace? What is a Grace education about? Questions I’m asked often. Here is my answer. Grace is very intentional about educating students. Stirring their passion for a life of noble character, doing what is right again and again, and living out the traits of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, and other such habits. Stirring their passion for a life of learning and competence by thinking critically, working hard, sharpening skills, growing their value to employers, families, communities, and churches. Stirring their passion for service to God and others, that is living with less self-interest and more concern for God and others. Making this educational experience available to students requires scholarships that enable attendance. Grace is committed to raising scholarship help for students, especially during these challenging economic times for families, regions, states, and country. We ask you seriously to consider contributing to our $4 million campaign to raise money for student scholarships. Please partner with us to help students and our world. A Grace education is needed now more than ever. Thank you for your consideration. Such education is desperately needed, honors God, and multiplies good for others. Ronald E. Manahan, Th.D. President 2 KL 19513 AnReport.indd 2 9/21/09 1:45 PM Onward A Capital Campaign for Grace College and Seminary Students by John R. Boal The 10-year comprehensive capital campaign for Grace College and Seminary—“Invest in Leadership… Impact the Future”—has come to a successful close. The campaign included a campus face lift with the addition of three new buildings—Indiana Hall, the Robert and Francis Gordon Student Recreation Center, and the Orthopaedic Capital Center— with a total investment of $16 million. In addition, the school received $12.5 million in unrestricted gifts to the Grace Fund and the endowing of Grace’s first chair with a gift from Dr. Dane and Mary Louise Miller. Total giving for the campaign was just under $30 million! God has blessed Grace and we are thankful for His goodness to us. This also allows us to say thank you for your faithful giving to campus. I believe that it is healthy to look back and reflect on God’s providential work in our lives, both personally and institutionally. But I also hear the voice of Coach “K” in my head as he impressed the words of the apostle Paul from Philippians 3:13–14 on our hearts: “… forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal…” (NASB). So today Grace is ready to press on and is launching a new capital campaign. “ONWARD” is a student-focused campaign at Grace College and Seminary. The goal of “ONWARD” is to raise $4 million for student scholarships over the next two and one-half years. I invite you to prayerfully consider what role God has for you in the lives of our students as we launch this new endeavor. John R. Boal Chief Advancement Officer 3 KL 19513 AnReport.indd 3 9/21/09 1:45 PM What does a scholarship mean in the life of a Grace student? Meet two students who have been helped by scholarships and encouraged by donors who made giving to Grace a priority. Jacque (Peters) Proctor is in her final year at Grace College. The senior from Wilmington, Ohio, will graduate in May 2010, with an elementary education degree. “I knew I wanted to attend a Christian college,” she said. “My original plan was not to attend Grace. I looked into a few other schools and had my heart set on one. But God had another plan. I am paying for college on my own and needed a good financial aid package and had not heard from the other college. “I decided to drive up to Grace. I took a tour and loved the campus and the atmosphere. In the end, Grace was able to offer me a better financial aid package, and I have loved it here!” Jacque received the Dane A. and Mary Louise Miller Merit Scholarship and a Grace Grant, plus she is a work-study with America Reads. “My financial aid package was a very important part of my college decision,” she said. “Coming to Grace has changed my life in so many ways. If it were not for the generous people who give to Grace, I wouldn’t have been able to attend.” Jacque’s husband, Shea (BS 07), whom she met at Grace, is a teacher in Warsaw. Jacque is looking forward to her own teaching career soon. Currently, she is student teaching under Grace alumnus Pam (Osborn, BS 68) Shipley at Jefferson Elementary School in Winona Lake. “I have always wanted to be a teacher,” she said. “I wanted a Christian education and my parents were not able to contribute. But because of generous people, I was able to come to Grace.” 4 KL 19513 AnReport.indd 4 9/21/09 1:45 PM “If it were not for the generous people who give to Grace, I wouldn’t have been able to attend.” 5 KL 19513 AnReport.indd 5 9/21/09 1:45 PM “Receiving any financial aid is always a huge blessing.” Josh Neuhart, a Grace College junior from Avon, Indiana, sees sports as an opportunity to serve God. Josh is pursuing a double major in journalism and biblical studies “to make an eternal impact,” he said, through athletics. “I’m definitely still open to the Lord’s leading for the future,” he said. “but for right now, I feel God directing me toward either sports ministry or sports journalism.” Josh is getting some valuable experience in this area right now as a student. “Since my freshman year,” he explained, “I have worked with Athletic Director Chad Briscoe and 6 KL 19513 AnReport.indd 6 9/21/09 1:45 PM my roommate Steve Copeland in the Sports Information Department keeping stats and maintaining and updating the athletic Web site. I’m constantly thanking God for the chance to get involved in Grace Athletics with a guy who has the same heart for sports and for God that I have.” “When I found out (through a Grace Magazine article) that Mrs. Grossman had been instrumental in the foundation of the journalism program at Grace,” he said, “I was excited to be associated with the scholarship. To be given an award in Mrs. Grossman’s honor means a lot to me. Josh says he came to Grace because he loved the campus and the spiritual environment. He has been a Growth Group Leader and leads a basketball outreach serve team. He is also a recipient of the Elener R. Grossman Journalism Scholarship. “Receiving any financial aid is always a huge blessing. I think donations help build relationships between alumni and current students.” Meet The donor Gilbert G. Grossman of Jonesborough, Tennessee, believes in sharing God’s blessings with others. And he is especially enthusiastic about sharing those blessings with Grace students. Grossman’s late wife, Elener (Norris, BA 58, S 63) taught English and journalism at Grace College from 1959–1963. Her high standards and encouraging words are wellremembered by her students. “Ellie” married Grossman and they operated an agricultural business in Westville, Indiana. “After 16 years at our business, we retired so we could do some overseas shortterm missions trips,” said Grossman. “Ellie fought cancer for 31 years, but she never let it hinder in serving the Lord.” She served on 24 trips, mostly in literature and bookstore ministries, before the Lord called her home in March 2005 at age 68. Grossman wanted to honor Ellie’s life, so he established an endowed journalism scholarship in her name at Grace College. He explained: “We as Christians need to support our Christian colleges and provide help to students who want to attend, but do not have the financial means. “With the economic downturn, finances have become more critical for many students. God abundantly blessed our marriage…so I want to share some of those blessings with others. I have found that the more you let blessings flow through you first, the more the Lord blesses.” Do you want to make a difference in the life of a student? Like the passing of the baton in a relay race, gaining optimal momentum and achieving the ultimate goal is reliant upon synergistic collaboration. The race cannot be run alone. A relay is dependent upon the passing of the baton—the reaching, the grasping, and the receiving with a firm, steady, and supportive grip. The runner pursues the goal with onward momentum toward the finish line. Help advance the legacy of Grace. By supporting a student, you can be a team participant toward future Grace impact, one student at a time. Here’s how: • Send your kids—pass the baton. What better place than Grace! • Be a conduit—encourage youth within your sphere of influence to consider Grace. What better place than Grace! • Bless through a monetary gift—make an investment in kingdom impact. What better place than Grace! Support the “Onward” Grace Alumni Scholarship Fund and help pass the tradition of educational excellence “Onward.” 13 KL 19513 AnReport.indd 13 9/24/09 12:09 PM Onward C o u n t o n M e My Gift of: $5,094 . . . . . . . . .1/4 Tuition $10,188 . . . . . . . .1/2 Tuition $20,376. . . . . . . .
