Information and Reference Calendar
Hello Fellow Pomptonians,
Over the past two years I have often been asked questions about our town. Some, such as
size and population are easy to answer (approx 3 sq. miles and 10,640). When asked to
describe our community I get stumped. How do I describe what we have here? What can
I say to help the other person really appreciate Pompton Lakes?
I start by saying that we’re “Mayberry.” Kids that grow up here tend to stay. Some may
leave to explore for awhile but in the end all roads lead home – to Pompton. And we have
many multi-generational families like the Moyles, Murphys and even my own family the
Quigleys.
Mayor
I often talk about how we congregate at Cardinal Café, Tony’s or the Ice Cream Station.

But how do I tell them about people like Al Backus who has volunteered on the Fire Dept

Shade Tree Commission ext. 306
[email protected]
The Borough received approval for our Community Forestry Management Plan
that enabled the town to apply for and receive a $25,000 New Jersey Community
Stewardship Incentive Program (CSIP) grant. This plan is an essential guide to
successfully achieving a healthy and safe community forest.
In the past two years, a total of 225 trees have been planted along town streets
and in our parks through these grants. Only municipalities and counties with
approved status under the NJ Shade Tree and Community Forestry Act are eligible to apply for a CSIP grant.
Members of the Shade Tree Commission were pleased to announce that the Borough has earned a Tree City USA designation which they have been working
towards for a few years. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor
Day Foundation, along with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. In the spring of this year, Mayor Cole and the Shade Tree
Commission accepted the Tree City USA designation award at the State Arbor
Day ceremony in Tewksbury, NJ. The Tree City USA signs at our town entrances
tell visitors that we are a community that cares about its environment.
Shade Tree Commissioners display trees to be
planted throughout the community.

The Recreation Commission under the direction of Karen Murphy, provides
Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter programs for children and adults throughout
the year. Special events are planned such as the Egg Hunt, Breakfast with Santa
and the Senior Picnic.
Program brochures are mailed to residents indicating sign-up
times and locations. Updates and/or changes to programs are
posted on the sign in front of the Library as well as on the Borough’s website. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the
month at 8:00pm in the Municipal Building.
Pompton Lakes Municipal Alliance Council
Susan Dziuba, Director 973-616-8197
The Pompton Lakes Municipal
Alliance Council (PLMAC) is
funded by a grant from the Governor’s Council for the prevention of alcohol and substance
abuse throughout the community. State Alliance funds are allocated to provide education, prevention efforts and intervention
services as well as support outreach efforts directed towards students, parents and community
members.
The PLMAC, in conjunction with the Police Department, school
system, Recreation Commission, relevant agencies and community organizations works as a community resource to assist in the
prevention, identification and intervention of negative juvenile
behaviors and dysfunctional family units. The PLMAC strives to
create a united community that acts to positively influence the
lives of the community’s children so that they can say no to alcohol and other drugs.
In addition, the PLMAC provides and supports many activities focusing on the
youth of the community such as after school enrichment programs, summer
camp, project graduation, peer to peer leadership programs, outdoor education,
the Game of L.I.F.E. and Teen Center activities. This year an underage drinking
seminar was presented to middle and high school students and adults by guest
speaker Matt Bellace.
Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month (excluding July and
August) at 7:00PM at the Lakeside School Media Center.
Teen Center
Janet Sciacchetano – [email protected]
The Teen Center, located at 247 Wanaque Avenue behind The Smiling Rhino
Theater, provides a safe, gently supervised place for Middle School and High
School students to gather with their friends.
The Teen Center offers a variety of activities throughout the year,
including dances, open gym, movie night, game & craft events,
themed parties and much more.
The Teen Center is a non-profit organization sponsored jointly
by the Town Council, Municipal Alliance, and the Recreation
Department and is staffed with adult community volunteers.
Most of the events are free; some are at a nominal fee. Middle
School students must register each year to participate in activities.
The Teen Center Committee
Meetings are held at the Lakeside Media Center, Lakeside
School on the second Thursday
of the month at 7:45pm with
the exception of July, August
and September. (If school is
closed, the meeting will take
place in the Pompton Lakes
Teen Center, 247 Wanaque
Avenue(behind the smiling Rhino Theater).
Youth Sporting Activities
Pompton Lakes’ sports organizations are unique in the sense that

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND OPEN SPACE COMMITTEES / FLOOD ADVISORY BOARD
Our environment is not something that we may take for granted. It is a product of our sincere concern, wise planning and
careful actions. It is planting trees, writing smart laws, cleaning our rivers, saving energy and preserving open space. It is wise
floodplain management and educating our children to be good stewards of the land. It means fixing what is broken and cleaning up what is dirty. All of this and more represents environmental protection in Pompton Lakes. A green today means a
green tomorrow.
The Borough’s Open Space Committee makes recommendations to Mayor and Council as to lands to be acquired for open
space, parkland and recreation as well as suggesting how to use funds to maintain existing open space. The Borough has
received grant money to beautify our open space in order to make safe havens for
our children to play and our seniors to relax.
The Flood Advisory Board pursues means necessary to alleviate, curtail, solve or prevent problems relating to flooding within the Borough and to confer with the proper
authorities for the purpose of improving the scope and efficiency of flood control.
The Lake Restoration Committee is a branch of the Flood Advisory Board dedicated
to restoring Pompton Lake.
Meetings are open to the public and are held in the Municipal Building as follows:
Environmental Protection – 2nd Thursday - 7:00pm
Open Space – 2nd Thursday – 7:30pm
Flood Advisory Board – 4th Thursday – 7:00pm

SOLUTIONS TO STORM WATER POLLUTION
A Guide to Healthy Habits for Cleaner Water
Pollution on streets, parking lots and lawns is washed by rain into storm drains, then directly to our drinking water supplies
and the ocean and lakes our children play in. Fertilizer, oil, pesticides, detergents, pet waste and grass clippings are among
the many pollutants that end up in our water supply.
Storm water pollution is New Jersey’s greatest threat to clean and plentiful water, and that is why we are doing something
about it.
By sharing the responsibility and making small, easy changes in our daily lives, we can keep common pollutants out of storm
water. It all adds up to cleaner water, and it saves the high cost of cleaning up once it’s dirty.
As part of New Jersey’s initiative to keep our water clean and plentiful and to meet federal requirements, many municipalities
and other public agencies, including colleges and military bases, must adopt ordinances or other rules prohibiting various
activities that contribute to storm water pollution. Breaking these rules can result in fines or penalties. The Borough Council
adopted Ordinance 06-02, Stormwater Control, Chapter 160A of the Code of the Borough of Pompton Lakes. A complete
copy of this ordinance is available from the Borough Clerk’s Office.
Easy Things You Can Do Every Day to Protect Our Water
As a resident, business owner or other member of the New Jersey community, it
is important to know these easy things you can do every day to protect our water:
• Limit your use of fertilizers and pesticides • Properly use and dispose of
hazardous products • Keep pollution our of storm drains • Clean up after your pet • Don’t feed wildlife • Don’t litter •
Dispose of yard waste properly.
For more information on storm water related topics, visit www.njstormwater.org or www.nonpointsource.org and

“Working hard to provide the Borough of
Pompton Lakes with quality water
and sewer services”
The Pompton Lakes Municipal Utilities
Authority, a seperate Authority from the
Borough, is responsible for the Borough’s
water supply, sewer collection and treatment. Monthly meetings are held at the
Authority’s Administration Building, 2000
Lincoln Avenue at 6:00 pm and are open
to the public. As you are probably aware,
the Authority recently replaced the 100year-old 8” water main and water services
with a 12” water service. The Authority
will continue to work closely with the
Streetscape Project to complete the Downtown Business area water system upgrades.
Another project nearing completion is
the Wireless Water Meter Upgrade.
The upgrade project is 90% complete
and should be completed before the end
of 2009. Instead of hiring an outside
contractor to do the wireless installations,
the Authority’s personnel have undertaken
the job which has resulted in a considerable savings to our customers with faster,
easier and more accurate meter readings.

Pompton Lakes Police Department
The Pompton Lakes Police Department consists of a group of men and women
dedicated to protect and serve the community.
JUNIOR POLICE ACADEMY
One of the goals of The Pompton Lakes Police Department is to reach out to the Borough’s youth and
inspire good citizenship through criminal justice education. The PLPD will sponsor a Junior Police
Academy that is available to students between the ages of 11 and 14, who maintain a “C” average and
have no juvenile record. Various physical and educational activities are planned by School Resource
Office Jessica Ribitzki and other police officers.
NEUMANN FOUNDATION 2009 BIKE AWARDS
The Neumann Foundation was founded in honor of slain police officer Keith E. Neumann and for the
past twenty years has donated 101 (Officer Newmann’s badge number) Cannondale mountain bikes to
various police departments throughout New Jersey. An additional donation of 101 bikes by an anonymous donor made it possible for the PLPD to be one of the recipients.
9-1-1 INFORMATION EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW
9-1-1 can be called from any phone and should only be called when someone is hurt or in danger and
is in need a police officer, a firefighter, or medical assistance. The 9-1-1 operator who answers the
phone is trained to help you and give you directions to follow and will stay on the phone with you
until everyone is safe. Memorize important information about yourself and your family and know
where you are if not at home, by looking at a street sign or landmark. If you are unable to talk, keep
the phone off the hook so that the 9-1-1 operator can hear what is going on in the area surrounding
you. IF YOU CALLED 9-1-1 BY ACCIDENT DO NOT HANG UP, stay on the phone until
the call taker says it is alright to hang up.
POLICE UNITY TOUR
The Police Unity Tour Inc. was formed in 1997 by a group of law enforcement officers from NJ who
rode their bicycles to raise awareness and financial support for the National Law Enforcement Officers
Memorial fund. The group has grown to over 1100 members nationwide.
The following are other important aspects of the Police Department:
• Child Passenger Safety – instructions on proper installation of infant/child seats by appointment
• Law Enforcement Torch Run – participation with other police departments to raise money and
awareness for “Special Olympics”
• Domestic Violence Response Team – trained volunteers to offer
emotional support to victims and their children as well as immediate
intervention for their safety and welfare by addressing immediate needs
and providing referrals (Passaic County Women’s Center 24-hour
Hotline – 973-835-0400)
• D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) – series of classroom
instructions by police officers to teach children how to live drug and
violence-free lives and how to resist peer pressure
• School Resource Officer (S.R.O.) – assigned to the Middle and
High Schools to assess and establish school safety policies, provide
programs and act as liaison between the police department and

it covers the street, highway or thoroughfare to such a depth
that snow removal or plowing is necessary, thus creating an
emergency, it shall be unlawful for any vehicle to be parked on any

Office of Emergency Management
A new and exciting addition to our emergency management plan is the addition of
our borough wide “Reverse Emergency Notification System”. Residents can be
notified within minutes of a problem developing and instructed on what actions to
take to be prepared and/or evacuate. Verizon customers are automatically in this
database, however, if you are not a Verizon customer and/or do not receive our
test calls, please register by going to the borough website,
www.pomptonlakesgov.com. and click on the box labeled “Reverse 9-1-1 Signup”.
Enter requested information including your cell phone numbers and email address
so that you can be notified in a timely manner. Make certain to enter the security
code. You may register all family members individually if you desire. If you
require assistance, please call our borough offices at 973-835-0143.
This past year our borough personnel have been working towards the adoption
and implementation of a countywide Hazard Mitigation Plan, which includes all 16
Passaic County municipalities. The adoption of this plan in August of 2009 will
make our Borough eligible for state and federal grants as they relate to hazard mitigation and Homeland Security preparedness.
A new initiative in our Borough that started approximately 2 years ago is our local
Citizen’s Emergency Response Team (CERT). This team is comprised of citizens
who have volunteered their time to be trained so that they can assist and know
what to do in the event of a local disaster. All volunteers have attended 20 hours
of training in the areas of emergency medical care, fire suppression, light search
and rescue, disaster response, disaster psychology, terrorism, and incident com-
mand techniques. The goal of the program is “neighbors helping neighbors” in
time of need. It is especially useful when emergency response personnel such as
police, fire and our first aid squad is overwhelmed. Our team is presently at 48
members and growing. If you would like to volunteer for our team, please call
CERT Coordinator Deborah Ross at 973-616-3698.
In summary, our local Emergency Management team partners with state, federal,
and local agencies to provide services to our residents in time of need. Please help
yourself by visiting websites such as www.ready.gov, www.fema.gov,

Pompton Lakes/Riverdale First Aid Squad
700 Ramapo Avenue, Pompton Lakes, NJ 07442, 973-835-1480
History
Early in the spring of 1935, seven concerned citizens recognized a need for
immediate ambulance service in the Pompton Lakes area.
A donation of $1,000.00 was made by Miss Elsie Kirkland, and Joe Louis,
Heavyweight Champion raised an additional $2,620.35 for an ambulance.
In May 1935, a new Packard ambulance was purchased at a cost
of $2,985.00 and the Pompton Lakes First Aid Squad was incorporated on June 10, 1935. Since 1935 the squad has purchased
more than 30 ambulances.
The volunteer members of the Pompton Lakes/Riverdale First
Aid Squad have been responding to emergency calls in the
community for nearly seventy five years. Progress has brought
remarkable change to the service they provide. Today the EMT’s
work in conjunction with paramedics from the local hospitals,
medivac helicopters, local emergency rooms, and regional trauma
centers to provide the best emergency care possible.
Training and Membership
Today the First Aid Squad responds to almost 1,200 calls per year. With over 30
active members, the First Aid Squad is available 24/7, 365 days per year.
Most squad members are certified as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) by
the New Jersey State Department of Health. This certification requires 120 hours
of classroom and hands on training. Ongoing training is then
required to maintain the certification. The members provide
outreach programs and training for the community.
If you are interested in joining, applications are available
weeknights between 7pm and 10pm; all training will be
provided free of charge.
With continued support from the residents and business
owners of Pompton Lakes and Riverdale, the First Aid Squad
will continue to provide emergency medical care at no charge
for years to come.

Pompton Lakes – A Part of History
The eloquence of past designs and structures
denotes a community rich with history and
culture. Tucked away in the pristine lake area
of Pompton Lakes was The Crawford Inn, one
of many architectural buildings exemplifying the
beauty of Pompton Lakes. The Crawford Inn
served as a luxury resort for those who visited
the town and enjoyed the pleasures of the lake.
Prior to becoming a resort, the structure was
utilized as Adams Health Resort and then became
Adams Sanitarium. News articles dated back to
1913 indicate that Romona Borden, the 17
year old heir to the Borden Condensed Milk
Company, had a brief stay at the sanitarium.
Historic Preservation Commission
The Pompton Lakes Historic Preservation
Commission was established by Borough
Ordinance in December, 1988 “to safeguard
the heritage of Pompton Lakes by preserving
the resources within the Borough which reflects
its cultural, social, economic and architectural
history.” The seven regular members and two
alternates are appointed by the Mayor and
Council and the main purpose of the
Commission is to recommend properties to
the Planning Board to be designated as local
historic landmarks. Such designation helps
maintain the properties in their original state
and preserves them for future generations. As a
guideline to historic properties, the Commission
consults the Cultural and Historical Survey of
Pompton Lakes. A copy of the survey is
available in the Public Library.
The Historic Commission meets on the fourth
Tuesday of the month in the meeting room of
the Emanuel Einstein Library at 8:00pm and
invites the public to attend.
“Ironworker’s Cottage” c. 1825-40 at 1238
Lincoln Avenue is the last remaining ironworker’s cottage associated with the nearby
Pompton Furnace. According to historic maps
a number of ironworkers’ cottages were located
along Lincoln and Van Ness Avenues during the
first decades of the nineteenth century, but
except for 1238 Lincoln Avenue, all have given
way to later development. Although the house
has undergone alteration, most notably the late
19th century addition to the rear elevation, the
house retains its formal integrity.
The Pompton Lakes Woman’s Club
The Pompton Lakes Woman’s Club (PLWC) is a volunteer
organization whose objectives are to promote the civic,
cultural and social life of the community.
Various departments of the PLWC include Creative Arts,
Performing Arts, Garden & Conservation, Social Services,
Culinary and International Affairs.
The PLWC provides many services to the community such
as a “welcome wagon” to help new residents become
acquainted with Pompton Lakes, scholarships to Pompton
Lakes’ students who are college bound, collecting funds for
the Borough’s Library through the annual “Library Tag
Day”, providing food for Borough’s needy and holiday gifts
for the children.
This year the PLWC initiated the microchip identification
program for pets. The PLWC also selects an annual project
to contribute to and this year’s project is collecting funds
for Autistim.
The Pompton Lakes Woman’s Club Museum has been
collecting, preserving and archiving historic items for over
50 years and have three display cabinets located in the
Municipal Building.
Special events such as the Bunny Breakfast, the Victorian
Tea, and the President’s Tea are sponsored by the PLWC
and funds collected from these events provide activities for
the Borough’s schools, scholarships and books for the Library.
The PLWC meetings are held the first Thursday of the month
from October through June at 7:00pm at Christ Episcopal
Church, 400 Ramapo Avenue, Pompton Lakes, NJ. If you
are interested in becoming a member, please contact Jackie
Vozzo at 973-835-0119.
PLWC members and guests attend the Victorian Tea.

Calendar for your section schedule.
Schedules are subject to change. Please refer to the
Borough Calendar for daily collection schedule.
Benjamin Steltzer C.P.W.M., Superintendent D.P.W. [email protected]
Tim Duffy, Supervisor, [email protected]
973-835-1465
Waste Containers – All containers shall be maintained in a sanitary condition consistent with rules
and regulations established by the Board of Health. No containers shall have ragged or sharp edges
or other defects liable to hamper or injure workers collecting solid waste or be in such condition that
they are unable to prevent contents from leaking out of the container or precluding vermin, rodents,
insects or animals from accessing the contents of the container. Containers shall be made of metal or
plastic with suitable handles, tight fitting covers and shall be water tight. Containers shall have a
capacity of no more than 36 gallons and shall weigh not more than 60 pounds when fully loaded.
Collection Practices – All recyclable materials shall be separated from the materials which are placed
out for solid waste collection. Solid waste shall have free liquids drained from it.
Solid waste containers shall be placed at the curbline of the property or at such other locations as may
be designated by the Superintendent of Public Works. Containers may be placed for collection at
any time after 6:00 p.m. the night before collection day and before 6:00 a.m. of the day of collection.
Except during declared emergencies or during leaf recycling season, the Borough strives to collect
solid waste twice per week.
The following materials may not be included with normal waste for collection:
Recyclable materials · Contagious disease solid waste including contaminated apparel, bedding, etc. ·
Highly flammable or explosive refuse · Waste oil, tires, appliances · Hazardous Waste · Propane tanks ·
Construction materials, demolition materials, tree trunks and stumps, cinderblocks, etc.
For information on the proper disposal practices for these or any other questionable materials, please
contact the Superintendent of Public Works at 973-835-1465.

wrapping paper, greeting cards, shredded paper, milk cartons, juice box cartons, pizza boxes, paper

clippings to the Recycling Center.
Schedules for Leaf Collection – The Borough of Pompton Lakes will be providing designated collection of leaves from all households (refer to calendar for collection dates), weather permitting.
To ensure curbside collection of leaves, the leaves must be either in special biodegradable paper bags
(available at the recycling center) or containerized loosely in clean garbage pails and/or trash cans.
Leaves in plastic bags and/or leaves raked into the streets will not be collected. Leaves will be
collected on the first trash collection day of each week, thereby eliminating one trash pickup day
each week for the entire leaf season. Trash collection shall be restored to twice a week upon ending of
leaf season. Refer to calendar for collection dates.
Branch and Brush Collection – Branches must be tied and bundled and cannot exceed
3 feet in length and must be no wider than ½ inch in diameter. Branches, brush, and thatch pick-up

$5.00 per tire with the rim.
Recent changes in the law require the recycling of ANY and ALL types of PLASTIC and
FOAM not just those items marked #1 through #7.
We encourage those homeowners who have the yard space, to compost their own leaves on site, and
/or use the “cut it and leave it” philosophy when doing your lawn work.
Co-Mingled Products – Glass bottles, metal cans, plastic bottles, plastic bags, plastic food containers,
foam “packing peanuts” and any other plastic items, may be mixed together and placed in a clean
garbage can no larger than a 30 gallons garbage can. All containers must be rinsed clean.
Street Sweeping Information - Borough streets are scheduled to be swept twice each month by
Bloomingdale DPW. Street sweeping is suspended during the heavy leaf drop period beginning at the
end of October. During the months of November through March, street sweeping will be scheduled
as needed. The tentative schedule is printed on the calendar. The schedule may be amended during
the year depending on weather conditions, equipment emergencies, etc. The schedule is offered as a
guide to probable dates for sweeping in your area. The Borough asks you to please leave the curb
area adjacent to your property free from obstructions or parked cars to insure a more complete sweep.
Please note that this schedule does not pertain to Wanaque Avenue, which is regularly swept by Passaic County crews.
Glass Bottles/Containers – Glass bottles and containers, Clear, Brown, Green, are those containers
that food and beverages come in. Do not include ceramic dishes, pyrex, window glass, TV tubes and

at curbside on your scheduled day for paper pick-up. All Paper Products may now be recycled and
CO-MINGLED. Paper products should be bundled securely · Tie two ways · Do not place in plastic
bags. Corrugated cardboard boxes should be broken down and tied in flat bundles about the size of a
pile of newspapers.
Be advised that leaving materials at the Recycling Center gate is considered illegal dumping and
punishable by fines and/or imprisonment. Propane tanks are not accepted at the Center.
