Safety Supervisor Tilcon continually provides much needed support to our borough residents by sitting on our Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) and offering manpower and equipment for any purpose, specifically evacuations with heavy equipment. equipment Health Department Maryann Orapello, Health Officer Responsible for any and all health related issues as a result of the flood event Maintains an office in Borough Hall and is available to answer questions on any health-related issue. Municipal Utilities Authority John Wegele, Operations Manager Supplies municipal water to our town, as well as sanitary sewer services. Will check our potable water supply for safe drinking water throughout and after the event. Works closely with OEM to notify residents of any impending problems with water or sewer system Flood Zone Security Police provide security Boats available for patrol and evacuation Wave runner available for security and medical emergencies Police roadblocks provide limited access- have your ID with you to regain access to homes Flood Watch Means a flood event is possible Yellow “watch” watch signs will be posted River markers are checked by police every hour and then half half-hour hour as the need progresses People should prepare to evacuate their homes and raise everything to a higher level Passaic Valley River Basin The Borough of Pompton Lakes lies between the Pequannock and Ramapo Rivers, contains the Wanaque River within its borders and is periodically borders, subject to flooding. Flooding High water levels can occur at any time of the year, but are more likely to occur during the Spring due to rain in combination with snow runoff and during the late summer and fall which is the prime season for tropical storms and hurricanes in northern New Jersey Flood Warning Means a flood is definite and residents should begin preparations to evacuate. Red “warning” warning signs will be posted Sound trucks will broadcast throughout areas Door-to-door Door to door notification may or will take place by Police, Block Captains or CERT team members Reverse 9-1-1 In 2009, the Borough contracted the services of Code Red, and can broadcast emergency and informational messages to our entire or select sections of our community. Residents can sign up for the service on the Borough website, pomptonlakesgov.com, and enter any phone numbers they want called called. Sign-up forms are also available at Police Headquarters and Borough Hall. Block Captains We have block captains who have volunteered to serve their neighborhoods. In they event of a flood, flood the block captains will be notified by O.E.M. and in t turn will ill notify tif their th i neighbors. i hb CERT Team The 2006 Citizens Emergency Response Team (CERT) is trained to assist in emergencies and at our shelter. They may be deployed via phone chain, chain or self-deploy in a catastrophe. CERT members operate in teams and carry special equipment. Mutual Aid Resources Passaic County Sheriff’s Department Passaic County Fire Departments Passaic County EMS Mobilization UASI and d EMS Taskk Forces Private Contractors Specialized Teams Utility Companies, Companies e.g. e g PSEG and JCPL Siren warning signals An evacuation warning is a series of short intermittent blasts for 3 minutes The signal to evacuate is a steady 3 minute blast on the siren Sirens are not used for fire notifications during a flood event to eliminate confusion Before evacuating Secure all loose objects indoors if possible Maintain battery-operated y p equipment q p such as portable radios, cell phones, and flashlights Fuel yyour vehicle g gas tank Move your vehicles to higher ground Relocate pets to relatives or the Pompton Lakes Animal Hospital for no-fee in advance Move important items to a higher level Before evacuation, continued Keep tuned to WGHT 1500 AM and Channel 77 (PLTV)/or Cable Channel 12 for i f information. ti Store drinking water in jugs in the event that the water supply is affected. affected Notify relatives of where you will be going if evacuated. Move any remaining cars to high ground. Roadways DO NOT DRIVE OR WALK through y the road mayy flooded roadwaysundermined. DO NOT DRIVE OR WALK around police barricades- the area is secured for your protection and security. Carry ID to allow you access back to your home after the event. After the flood Police will notify the shelter when it is safe for residents to return home. Cleanup kits will be distributed by the American Red Cross. Information regarding FEMA will be available. available Disinfect all areas affected with solution of soap and bleach. NEVER MIX bleach and ammonia!!!!! Lime should be spread over lawn areas. D.A.C. A Disaster Assistance Center may be set up. If it is, it will likely be in the Lenox School Allpurpose room. Agencies would be available for residents to file claims. After Tropical Storm Floyd and March 2010, FEMA representatives actually went door-todoor to do damage assessment inventories, inventories and in some cases, provided checks on the spot. River Crest Remember that the rivers in Pompton Lakes crest approximately 12 hours after the end of the rainfall. They will continue to rise 1 to 1.5 feet during that time.
