From The Chairman
Look At Your Glass
I’m preparing for the 25th Annual Wool Capitol Triathlon which
will take place later this month here in San Angelo. It’s the oldest
Olympic distance triathlon in the Southwest. I’m probably going
to feel like the oldest triathlete in the Southwest when I’m done,
too. Wish me luck!!
It has been my pleasure to work directly with the Steering Committee for our 9th annual West Texas Legislative Summit set
for this August 27-28. The topic will be Water Resources-Now
and the Future, and we have an impressive panel of experts and speakers to help us
address these timely and pressing issues. Please see other information included in the
newsletter regarding speakers, topics and opportunities to join our co-sponsors. Please
also be sure to register in the next few days and help us host legislators and attendees
from all over Texas. Our conference co-hosts are State Senator Robert Duncan and
State Representative Drew Darby, our Monday evening reception and dinner will take
place at Christoval Vineyards, and the main program will be presented on Tuesday,
Aug. 28 at the McNease Convention Center.
Don’t forget to set your DVR to record the national broadcasts of the 6th Annual Chamber-sponsored Showdown in San Angelo drag boat races filmed June 22-24. Better yet,
assemble the gang live to watch! Showtimes are Wednesday, Aug. 18, 3 p.m. on NBC
Sports; Monday, Aug. 23, at 12 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Mav TV; Monday, Aug. 30, 5 p.m.
on NBC Sports, and finally Sunday, Dec. 2 at 11 a.m. on the Speed Channel.
Thanks to our friends at San Angelo Banking Center who sponsored Business @ Happy
Hour on July 24. We also thank all who attended July’s Business Brown Bag Lunch
featuring information for employers on immigration issues, as well as Alfredo Lozano
for facilitating the session.
Here are a few other opportunities to complete your summer:

Register for the 9th annual West Texas Legislative Summit August 27-28. Water
Resources-Now and the Future, sessions will take place at the McNease Convention
Center, and the pre-conference legislative reception and dinner is at Christoval Vineyards, with transportation service available from the host hotel. Registration information on either of these events, or a combined discount to both, are detailed in the newsletter.
 Attend this month’s luncheon scheduled August 14, 11:30 a.m. at the West Texas
Training Center featuring Mayor Alvin New and Interim City Manager Michael Dane
with a “State of the City” update. Sponsors are 1st Community Federal Credit Union,
Howard College, and the West Texas Training Center. Members may attend for $15,
and reservations may be made online (www.sanangelo.org) or by calling the Chamber
at 655-4136, ext.235.
 Join us for the August 16 Business Brown Bag Luncheon co-hosted by the SBDC,
Incubator and Chamber. The topic will be “Facebook for Business—Tips and Tricks”
facilitated by Andy Allen.
 Business advising sessions with trained business counselors from ASU’s Small
Business Development Center are available at the Chamber at your convenience by calling us at 655-4136, Ext. 222.

In partnership with Butts Recycling and Keep San Angelo
Beautiful, the Showdown in San Angelo drag boat races went
green with recycling .
Total recycling weight that was received this year was 1,420
lbs., which would be equivalent to approximately 1 1 /2 of the
roll off dumpsters. There was a total of 455 lbs. of aluminum
cans, and 800 lbs. of plastic bottles collected, which left ONLY
165 lbs. of trash! The 2013 Showdown will be even more green
as other recyclables could be added as well as more recycle bins.
Sales taxes were reported by the Comptroller for
May and it was another good report, 15.6 % overMay of 2011, and up 12.8% year to date, over 4
percentage points higher than the state increase.

San angelo At Calgary Stampede
The West Texas All Star Girls Fast Pitch Tournament returned to San
Angelo this year and a wonderful time was had by all. Hotel rooms
in San Angelo were sold out as 110 teams from across the state
came to San Angelo to compete.
2012 marks the 100th year celebration of the Calgary Stampede, and the
San Angelo Convention & Visitors Bureau participated with Texas Tourism
in marketing tourism to Texas. Alberta is the number one provincial source
of visitor arrivals into Texas from Western Canada, and many of those visit
San Angelo for the Roping Fiesta, World’s Greatest Horseman, the San
Angelo Livestock Show & Rodeo, and more.

You know it must be true with me when I say
“The chamber is the best place to work”. This is
my second tenure with the San Angelo Chamber of
Commerce. In the 80’s, when I was a baby, I went
to work for the Chamber and spent the next 8
years. I left to pursue bigger and better things,
marriage and children. Raising my children has
been the most rewarding job EVER; working at the
Chamber comes a close second. I have now been
back at the Chamber going on eight years ---again,
Sandra Pomroy
or should I just say 16 years?
I’ve been in my new position for one year. As Vice President of Chamber
Operations, I oversee the membership department that includes Chamber
communications and events. The Chamber is my #1 priority, to help San
Angelo and your business grow. The bottom line of everything I strive to do
is for a healthy growth of our community and new customers for our members, and keeping members networking and connected. Some of my specific
projects include development of the Images of San Angelo magazine, city
map, membership development and retention, smart phone app, West Texas
Legislative Summit, Young Professionals Task Force, Business Brown Bag,
Leadership San Angelo Program, Showdown in San Angelo Drag Boat Races,
annual banquet, and staffing of the P-16+ Education Partnership. I supervise
the membership department of three and a half employees and oversee
projects and events that include Business Expo, Membership Luncheons,
GAFB picnic, BAHH, newsletter, website, marketing, and communications. I
answer to the big boss Phil and of course our awesome volunteer board of
directors of the Chamber of Commerce.
I’ve been married to husband Jim for 23 years, we have 2 children: Haley,
21, accountant and future law student, and golf enthusiast Nathan, 17, a
stepdaughter and two granddaughters. I enjoy the outdoors, College football, running, birding, and watching my son play golf. I enjoy wine tasting,
and new hobby mosaic art. I tell my husband all the time that we each have
the most beautiful views in which to work and enjoy- my office at the Visitor
Center overlooks the river and Kids Kingdom, and my husband is the golf
course superintendent at San Angelo Country Club. “It doesn’t get any better than that in West Texas”. I’m truly BLESSED!

“A positive, forward-thinking mindset is a critical element for an organization such as ours—charged with sustaining and growing businesses

These premier sponsorships include premium booth space and accessories, logo recognition on all Expo materials and online advertising, and additional sign‐
age at the event. In short, you are a star of the show! Expo Eve Sponsor: Held from 5:30 to 6:30 the evening before Business Expo, Expo Eve is an opportunity for employees of the almost 100 exhibitors to set‐up the booth spaces, and an opportunity for your organization to gain exposure to leading local busi‐
nesses. The $400 sponsorship provides pizza for the attendees and includes signage during the evening, and logo recog‐
nition on all promotional materials. Bag Sponsor: All attendees are greeted at the door and given a “Goodie Bag” to collect promotional products and pamphlets from the exhibitors. This is a mobile marketing opportunity for your business with the approximately 2,500 attendees carrying your logo all over the event AND home! tage of this exclusive offer, your company will need to provide the bags and $250. Exhibitor's Lounge Sponsor: Almost every manager/owner/employee/decision maker for the businesses exhibiting at the Business Expo visits the Exhibitor’s Lounge during the event.
