on Aging

April 2016
MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
The Supporters of the Dennis
Council on Aging was established
in 2012 to provide supplemental
monies through grants and fund
raising events aimed at improving
existing programs at the Dennis Senior Center. Since its inception, the Supporters have sponsored two Summer Galas and a
third is in the planning stages. To date, the funds have gone
directly to the Golden Age Program which provides a safe and
enjoyable place to enrich the daily lives of our seniors while
allowing their caregiver some much needed respite. Tuition
scholarships for individuals who could not otherwise afford the
program have been extended. It is our goal to expand the Golden
Age Program to a fourth day to meet the ever increasing requests
from our community. Additional funds would also be used by
both our Outreach Department to assist clients in emergency
situations with medical supplies/bills or food and Transportation Department to subsidize GAP transportation and route
service for shopping trips. The Supporters of the Dennis COA
have become an integral part of our programing through their
support and encouragement. If you would like more information,
please contact Gary Barber, President, at 508-385-5941.
Best,
Deborah

REWARDING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY!
Would you like to share a few hours of your time
with the children (pre-K—3rd grade) of Ezra H. Baker
Innovation School? There are many rewarding
opportunities: reading with students, being a breakfast buddy (many students have breakfast there
before the school day begins), or sharing a hobby or
skill (knitting, origami, photography, etc.) with a small
group of students to name a few. Time commitment
could be as little as or much as suits you. All
volunteers must pass a CORI. If you’re interested in
finding out more, please contact Tanya Roza at (508)
398-7690 or [email protected] . Ezra
Baker is a great school with wonderful kids and staff!

MOVIES
FOR
MARCH & APRIL
Brooklyn (2015), rated PG-13 ~
Tuesday, March 29th, 2:00pm
“’Brooklyn’ is both sharply observed and gently nostalgic.” New York Times
“’Brooklyn’ is easily the year’s best and most beguiling love story.” Rolling Stone
A profoundly moving story of Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan), a young Irish
immigrant navigating her way through 1950s Brooklyn. Lured by the promise
of America, Eilis departs Ireland and the comfort of her mother’s home for the
shores of New York City. The initial feelings of homesickness quickly diminish as
a fresh romance sweeps Eilis into the intoxicating charm of love. But soon,
her new, bold life is disrupted by her past, and Eilis must choose between two
countries and the lives that exist within. Nominated for three Academy Awards
including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Note: different day and start time.
The Martian (2015), rated PG-13 ~
Thursday, April 28th, 1:30pm
“An enthralling and rigorously realistic outer-space survival story in which Matt
Damon plays a NASA botanist stranded on the Red Planet after a sandstorm
forces his crewmates to abort their mission.” Variety
When astronauts blast off from the planet Mars, they leave behind Mark Watney
(Matt Damon), presumed dead after a fierce storm. With only a meager amount of
supplies, the stranded visitor must utilize his wits and spirit to find a way to survive on the hostile planet. Meanwhile, back on Earth, members of NASA and a
team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring him home, while his crew
mates hatch their own plan for a daring rescue mission. Directed by Ridley Scott.
Nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best
Adapted Screenplay. Winner of the Golden Globe for Best Picture and Best Actor
(Matt Damon). A smart, thrilling, and surprisingly funny cinematic experience.

ELDER LAW NOTES
By Arthur B. Crooks, Jr., Esq.
I recently attended the annual summit meeting of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys in Newport
Beach California--one of only two Massachusetts attorneys in attendance. There are a number of developments both at the federal level and at the state level which will be dramatically impacting your estate planning
in the coming months and years.
Stay tuned to this column for further developments and take note that I will be presenting two comprehensive
seminars on these matters--one on Saturday, April 9, 2016 and another on June 11, 2016, at West Dennis
Graded Schoolhouse, 67 School St., West Dennis.
Arthur B. Crooks, Jr., Esq., is a member of the Dennis Council on Aging Board. If you have
questions please call 508-398-3037 or visit www.crookslaw.com.
SAFETY TIP
By Officer Elizabeth Tucker, Crime Prevention Officer
Over the last year, the Police Department has hired three new officers: Officer Nicholas
DiFrancesco, Officer Mark Lambton, and Officer Brandon Whiting. Nick and Mark have
completed their field training and are on the road by themselves and doing a great job.
Brandon was hired back on January 27th and will be completing his field training in April.
The Community Service Unit will be very busy this spring. The Citizen’s Police
Academy is back by popular demand! Classes run Mondays from 6:30-10:00pm
March 7th - May 16th at the Police Station at 90 Bob Crowell Rd., S. Dennis.
Applicants must be a Dennis resident or work in the town and be at least 18 years
old, and subject to a criminal background check. Applications at the Dennis Police
Station, the dept. website www.dennispolice.com, or call the Community Policing
Unit at 774-352-1528.
The Community Service Unit will also be offering R.A.D. classes for women in early March and late May.
And last but not least, a Senior Citizen’s Police Academy will be offered in September. If you are interested
in any of these classes, please keep your eye out on our Facebook page (Dennis Police) or through our
press releases for further information and sign ups periods.
