Mountain Kingdoms – distinctly different
Truly independent
In an age where many so-called ‘independent’ travel companies have in fact been bought out by multi-national
giants, we remain fiercely independent with all the benefits this offers our clients.
Value for money prices with an emphasis on quality
We are not in the business of cutting our itineraries and services to the bone to offer eye-catching cheap prices.
We use some of the best airlines, and typically 3 or 4 star hotels in cities. We include the majority of meals and
private transport for road travel. We use excellent equipment and appoint well-trained staff and leaders. In
2014 97% of our clients rated their Mountain Kingdoms holiday as ‘excellent’ or ‘good.’ We are members of AITO
and bound by their quality charter.
Complete financial security
You can book with us confident that your holiday has full financial protection. Flight inclusive holidays are
financially protected by the Civil Aviation Authority under ATOL licence number 2973 and ‘Land Only’ holidays
are covered by a bond secured with ABTOT.
Award winning Responsible Tourism
We feel strongly that all our holidays should benefit local communities, protect the environment and respect
local traditions, religion and heritage. You can read more about the charities we support and our Responsible
Tourism commitments and initiatives towards the end of this itinerary or at mountainkingdoms.com.
Genuine small group travel
Almost all of our holidays have a maximum group size of just 12, plus leader. This provides more contact with
your leader, readier access to off-the-beaten-path areas, greater interaction with local communities and a
reduced environmental impact.
Loyalty Discount
If you have previously travelled with us we recognise your loyalty with a discount on future trips.
Booking your holiday – it couldn’t be easier
Once you’ve chosen your Mountain Kingdoms holiday you can book online, call the office or complete and post a
booking form which can be found in our brochure or downloaded from our website. If you would like to a hold a
place on one of our trips, whilst you make up your mind, please give us a call to make a provisional booking.
This is a no-obligation, no-cost booking and we will hold your place until space comes under pressure or we need
your decision.
Comprehensive information
When we receive your booking we send you a full trip dossier which contains details of visas and vaccinations
required, a suggested gear and clothing list and lots of useful information. In fact, everything you need to know
to give you peace of mind and allow you to prepare for your trip of a lifetime.

holiday. A Tailor Made holiday will be created especially for you by one of our well-travelled experts, who will
have first-hand experience of the destination/s you want to visit. They will be able to advise on the
accommodation best suited to your needs, the sights you should visit (and those to avoid!) and the best rides
and activities matched to your ability. In short, we will work together with you to create your perfect holiday.
If you would like to explore the idea of a Tailor Made holiday with Mountain Kingdoms then please call us on +44

Your guide
You will be escorted by an English-speaking French cycling tour leader. As
passionate cyclists our guides will help you discover the gems of their own country
on two wheels.
They are fully qualified cycle tour leaders and are member of the association MCF
(Moniteur Cycling Français). They are all experienced mechanics and have a good
knowledge of the local flora and fauna. They also have a good sense of humour and
infectious enthusiasm.

Trip summary
During the off-season, when road bikes are usually stored away, the Côte d’Azur region of France offers superb
cycling with mild temperatures and winter sunshine!
There’s much more to it than just the coast road. Discover a wealth of beautiful mountains, secret cols, and
small Provençal villages.
A trip beginning and ending in Nice, concocted by local cyclists, for whom the cycling season is year round!
Enjoy the foothills of Nice, the region of Vence, the Esterel and Maures mountain ranges, Draguignan and the
Var backcountry on this touring holiday with hotel accommodation and support vehicle. Thanks to the quiet offseason period, the trip offers a relaxing holiday, with splendid views of the Mediterranean Sea under clear blue
skies.
This trip has some challenging climbs and long days in the saddle. You are amply rewarded for your efforts with
stunning scenery, endless descents, great food and the satisfaction of completing this wonderful circuit.
Special Notes
Is this the right trip for me?
Who is it for?
This trip is designed for the road cyclist who wants to challenge themselves on some fantastic roads with
spectacular scenery.
As there is always a support vehicle behind you there are no concerns over whether you can make it or not, if
you feel like a rest, then just jump into the van.
The majority of the cycling is on quiet roads.
This ride is open to all abilities due to the availability of the support vehicle whenever needed, but you will
get more enjoyment out of the trip if you are getting out on your bike once a week or more.
What it entails:
7 days of cycling with some long climbs.
The most challenging part of the tour is day 7 as it involves 1,900m of climbing. As long as you take it at your
own pace you will be fine. You have all day to complete the ride and the stunning scenery will help to
encourage you up the climbs. There is of course the support vehicle travelling behind you that will be on hand
to offer a lift.

Vehicle Support
Throughout the trip there will be a support vehicle following behind you, this will act as your back up and is
available for you whenever you feel like getting a lift to the top or bottom of a hill.
Should I take my own bike or hire one?
The rental road bikes are good quality and are perfect for this trip; however, as you will know your own bike
the best you may prefer to take it with you. If you do this you should be aware of a few points.
If you choose to take your own bicycle then you will need to make sure that it has had a thorough service
before the trip and is in good working order.
You would be wise to ensure the gearing on your bike is setup for long climbs, the rental bikes have a
compact crankset 50 and 34 tooth ring. So they are adapted to mountain passes.
You will need to cover any excess baggage charges payable to the airline if you bike and luggage takes you
over the allowable limit.
Packing up your bike
There are several different means of carrying your bike on a plane:
1. The cheapest one is to head to your local bike shop and see if they have any cardboard bike boxes
going spare. These boxes should be fine for a return journey.
2. Bike bag, these soft bags are a good option and some of them come with wheels making it easier to
transit through airports. When packing your bike it’s best to place a large piece of cardboard down
either side of the bike to add extra protection and also to wrap pipe lagging around your frame and
your forks.
3. A plastic lightweight box such as can be found on www.zoogz.co.uk offer a good middle ground
between the lightweight bike bags and the heavy well protected hard plastic cases. A 10% discount is
available on these boxes if you let them know you have booked a holiday with Mountain Kingdoms.
4. Heavy plastic cases, whilst these provide excellent protection they weigh a lot more than the
alternatives and can result in excess baggage charges and delays at airports.
When packing your bike you will need to take off your wheels, pedals and handle bars (Handle bars should be
wrapped in rags or pipe lagging and fastened to your frame). The bike should now fit into your case/bag/box.
You now need to make sure that the bike is secure in the case and does not have room to move around. You
will also want to remove you rear gear mechanism as this is fragile and exposed when the rear wheel is off,
the best way to remove this is by undoing the replaceable aluminium ‘Mech hanger’ that attaches to the
frame. The ‘rear mech’ then needs to be wrapped in rags and attached to the frame.
If your bike has disk brakes it is best to remove the rotors and wrap them up in cardboard to keep them safe.
You will also need to take out your quick release levers from the wheels. Ensure that you let out some of the
air from your tyres but leave enough in to give them a bit of added protection. Then place the wheels on top
of the frame ensuring that there is sufficient padding between the two and you should be ready to travel. If
you do have any questions please feel free to ring the office and speak to Jim, he has packed his bike up
countless times for air travel and knows a few tricks. 01453 844400
Rental bikes
There are two options for the rental bikes for this trip, you can choose the Kona Zing Aluminium road bike or
you can opt to pay a bit more money and upgrade to the lighter weight Carbon version of the Kona Zing. The
benefit of a lighter bike is that you will find the climbs easier as you will be carrying less weight. The Carbon
version will also provide a more comfortable ride.
Free high-quality fleece
On this trip we offer a free high-quality Mountain Kingdoms micro fleece instead of our customary kit bag. On
this trip you may take a wheelie bag as your luggage will be transported by vehicles throughout. On many of
our other trekking trips we offer a free Mountain Kingdoms kit bag as they are essential due to being carried
by porters, horses and yaks; however we realise taking a kit bag on some trips is not so convenient or
necessary. Your trip dossier will contain more information on the size of bag you can take.

Your trip itinerary
Day 1: FLY LONDON TO NICE
You will be met on arrival at the airport and transferred to your hotel.
Overnight: Grand Hotel Le Florence Or Similar, Nice
(Meals: D)
Day 2: CYCLE FROM NICE TO GRASSE (Cycling approx. 90km, 1600m ascent).
After breakfast it's time to leave the city and head for your first climb of the day. After a ride along the famous
Promenade des Anglais, you cross the Var River before tackling the Col du Peyron at 304m, with its stunning
views of the sea. You then take a pretty little mountain road above the Var River, the source of which is not far
from the Col de la Cayolle, a mythical mountain pass on the Grande Traversée des Alpes. Your route then takes
you along the eastern side of the Mouton d'Anou mountain, a summit well known to Nice hikers. You quickly
reach your first small Provençal villages, such as Bouyon and Bezaudun les Alpes, with their flat, tiled roofs,
typical of the Nice hinterland. The altimeters hit 4 digits as you find yourselves at 1000 m above the
Promenade des Anglais! You then descend the beautiful Gorges du Loup on a small winding road, which takes
you to your first stopover of the week: Grasse. Perfume capital, Grasse is also full of small winding streets and
alleys, some dating from the middle ages. Time to settle in to your hotel before dinner at a restaurant.
Overnight: Hotel La Bellaudière Or Best Western Elixir Or Similar
(Meals: BLD)
Day 3: CYCLE FROM GRASSE TO SAINT RAPHAEL. (Cycling approx. 95km, 1400m ascent with loop to Opio).
(Opio loop is 20km & 350m ascent)
This morning you have the option of an additional 20km loop via
Opio, famous for its olive oil. For those who would rather take it a
bit easier you can have a more relaxed breakfast and wait for the
others to return to Grasse. You will all then head west, quickly
reaching the Lac de Saint Cassien, with its dam and beautiful
turquoise water. Your route winds upwards, with views of the lake,
before taking you round the small Tanneron range. An extension of
the Esterel range, the Tanneron is covered in vast mimosas and
eucalyptus forests. The range is transformed during the 3 winter
months, covered with a beautiful blanket of yellow flowers, their
intense colour all the more beautiful under the striking
Mediterranean sky. Even outside the mimosa flowering period, the
Tanneron is an enchanting range, with its soft contours and quiet
winding roads. You descend back down to sea level at Mandelieu la Napoule, before following the coast along
the Esterel cliffs, from Théoule sur Mer to Saint Raphaël. 30 kilometres of beautiful rugged coastline made up
of cliffs, creeks, promontories and islands. You will arrive in Saint Raphaël for a picture postcard sunset, before
settling in to your hotel.
Overnight: Hotel San Pedro, Or Similar
(Meals: BLD)

Day 4: CYCLE FROM SAINT RAPHAEL TO LE LAVANDOU. (Cycling approx. 110km, 1300m ascent).
Saint Raphaël and Fréjus mark the dividing line between two major ranges of the Côte d'Azur: the Esterel and
the Maures. These two towns aside, the temperamental River Argens also symbolizes the gateway to the Massif
des Maures. Unfortunately, the Argens, which takes its source in Seillons, a village that we will cross on day 6,
gets regular press coverage due to the heavy flooding that it causes. The day's journey takes you through the
shaded forest of the Maures, and over the Valdingarde (392 m), Peigros and Gratteloup (225 m) passes. You
then head due south to join the famous town of Saint Tropez. Crossing "Saint Trop" in the off-season is the best
way to appreciate this pretty little port, away from the hustle and bustle of the summer months. You then
follow the gulf of Saint Tropez, riding along the sinuous mountain roads used for the car chase scenes in the
famous French film "Gendarme de Saint Tropez" Ramatuelle, Col de Collebasse and La Croix Valmer. The
coastal road, along the Corniche des Maures, takes you gently towards Le Lavandou, for a well-earned rest and
overnight stay.
Overnight: Hotel De La Plage Or Similar
(Meals: BLD)
Day 5: CYCLE FROM LE LAVANDOU TO SAINT MAXIMIN LAS SAINTE BAUME. (Cycling approx. 105km, 1585m
ascent
A stunning start to the day, making the most of the panoramic
views and cool morning air on the 400 m climb to the Col de
Babaou. The mountain pass allows you to cross the Maures from
south to north. Your route then follows the flow of the
Collobrières River, descending the last foothills of the Massif des
Maures, before arriving in the Toulon hinterland. Your route skirts
round the capital of the Var, preferring to stay on quieter country
roads, before heading west to the challenges of the Sainte Baume
range. A mere 20 kilometres from the Mediterranean Sea, this long
mountain ridge stretches for 35 km and is 15 km wide. Your
itinerary takes you along the eastern then northern flanks of the
Sainte Baume, before joining Saint Maximin la Sainte Baume. You
are now at the most westerly point of your itinerary. From here
on, you'll make your way back to Nice via a series of mountain passes and Provençal villages.
Overnight: Hotel De France Or Similar
(Meals: BLD)
Day 6: CYCLE FROM SAINT MAXIMIN LAS SAINTE BAUME TO MOUSTIERS SAINTE MARIE. (Cycling approx.
105km, 1400m ascent).
Protected from the famous Mistral wind by the Sainte Baume range, you make an early start, heading due
north. You pass the source of the Argens River, before heading for the Gorges du Verdon. Your route takes you
via the Artigues Mountain, then through the forest of Mont Major. For the more energetic amongst you, a climb
to the village of Saint Julien, at the top of a rocky outcrop, offers superb views over the plains of Haute
Provence. You then join the Verdon River at Gréoux-les-Bains, before arriving at the shore of the Lac de Sainte
Croix, and finishing the day at Moustiers Sainte Marie.
Overnight: Hotel Le Colombier Or Similar
(Meals: BLD)
Day 7: CYCLE FROM MOUSTIERS SAINTE MARIE TO CASTELLANE. (Cycling approx. 95km, 1900m ascent).
You start the day with a big breakfast, in preparation for what will certainly be the most mountainous day of
the week. You embark on a superb route overlooking the grand canyon of the Verdon, at the foot of the
Corniche Sublime, 1500 m above the foot of the canyon. The route offers breath-taking landscape! A climb to
the top of the Col d'Illoire and the Col de Vaumale, before continuing on towards Comps sur Artuby on one of
the most beautiful roads in Provence. The surroundings offer a radical change in scenery, despite the proximity
of the Mediterranean Sea. You avoid the classic route of the Gorges du Verdon, with its inherent traffic, and
follow a route through small villages along the edge of the canyon. After a long section at between 700 and
900m above sea level, you arrive in Castellane, on the banks of the Verdon.
Overnight: Hotel Du Commerce Or Similar, Castellane
(Meals: BLD)
Bookings and information: 01453 844400

Page |7
Day 8: CYCLE FROM CASTELLAN TO NICE. (Cycling approx. 110km, 1600m ascent).
For the start of the last day of this trip through Provence, you tackle a 330m climb to the Col de Luens
(1054m). You leave the busy Route de Napoléon behind you and head up the second to last climb of the week:
the Col de Bleine (1439 m), the highest point of the journey, the pass is reached after a series of steep hairpin
bends. By this time you start to feel the benefits of the previous 6 days in the saddle, and the climb is one to
remember. In the event of bad weather, a lower altitude route is possible. Then you take a descent to the foot
of the Barres du Cheiron, before joining a short section ridden in the opposite direction at the beginning of the
week. Then it's the final assault of the Col de Vence, at nearly 1000 m above sea level, with splendid views of
the coast and surrounding mountains. It's all downhill from here, as you coast your way down to the sea, and
Nice, the final destination of this trip.

Flight arrangements
Flight-inclusive from price
Regretfully gone are the days when an airline quoted one price and we were able to fix a Flight Inclusive price
in our brochure. In these days of Fuel Surcharges, Airport Departure Taxes, and with airlines changing their
fares on a frequent basis, printing a fixed price is no longer the best way of getting you the cheapest fare.
This is our overriding aim – to give you the best fare possible at time of booking. Remember, the earlier you
book the greater your chances of securing the best fare.
Flight inclusive packages booked through Mountain Kingdoms are protected through our ATOL bonding scheme.
Flight Upgrades and Regional Airports
Please call us on +44 (0)1453 844400 for flight options from regional UK airports, Business Class upgrades,
alternative airlines and stopovers. Please also check our website for the most up to date flight inclusive ‘from'
prices.
Further information
When we receive your booking, we send you a full Trip Dossier which contains details of any visas and
vaccinations required, a suggested gear and clothing list and lots of useful information. If you do have queries at
this initial stage do call us on 01453 844400 and we will be pleased to offer advice.
The nature of adventure travel
Every effort will be made to keep to this itinerary but we cannot guarantee that things may not change, either
before you travel or while you are away. By its very nature, adventure travel involves an element of the
unexpected, particularly in more remote areas. A variety of factors such as adverse weather conditions, changes
to local schedules and difficulties with transportation can all contribute to the need to make changes to the
itinerary, often at the very last minute. Our Operations Manager and your Trip Leader will make every effort to
maintain the integrity of the original itinerary and minimise the impact of any changes, but an easy-going and
flexible nature is a real asset! Please note that all timings and distances given are approximate.

Mountain Kingdoms & Responsible Tourism
Our commitment
Mountain Kingdoms is committed to responsible tourism, through policies and practices which permeate all
aspects of its business. Our policies aim to ensure that we and our clients act in a way which is socially,
environmentally and culturally sound. We feel strongly that all Mountain Kingdoms holidays should benefit local
communities, protect the environment by minimising pollution, and respect local traditions, religion and
heritage. We tread lightly - low volume, low impact trekking/touring is the best way of preserving the beautiful
and fragile places we visit.
We work with organisations such as Tourism Concern, International Porter Protection Group (IPPG), Ecoan, AITO
and various charities, to help achieve our responsible tourism goals.
Our initiatives
We support a number of charities in many of the destinations we visit. In 2015
our main efforts went into raising money for the Nepal Earthquake Appeal.
Rather than support the large international charities we channelled the money
raised to small local charities that we know and trust implicitly. This meant
that every pound raised was spent in helping the Nepalese people directly. On
one day alone we raised £30,000 for the Gurkha Welfare Trust.
Other examples of our recent ongoing work are the Simien Mountains Mobile
Medical Service, the Ginette Harrison School in Nepal, the New Life Centre in Kathmandu, the Village Education
Project in Kilimanjaro, English-speaking courses for our trusty Sherpas, and many more.
If you know of a registered charity that does good ‘hands on’ work in a country that we operate in please send
us details and we will consider adding it to the list of charities we support.
Further details of all our Responsible Tourism initiatives can be found at
www.mountainkingdoms.com/about/responsible-travel
Porter Protection
In the countries where we use porters we feel that the issue of porter protection is immensely
important. We support the work and the aims of the IPPG (International Porter Protection Group)
and as such we have a set of guidelines to adhere to and which we apply worldwide.
Carbon off-setting
Working with Ecoan tree-planting project in Southern Peru we offset the carbon emissions for every Mountain
Kingdoms holiday sold that includes an international flight.
