As the calendar year comes
to a close, it is a good time to
reflect and also to get together
with family to relax and enjoy
Christmas.
The club has just held its 52nd
Annual General Meeting and
adopted our 51st annual
accounts. It is encouraging to
note that despite the strained
economic conditions we succeeded in recording a
modest surplus and we continue to trade quite well.

For this our sincere thanks goes out to all our members and patrons
who continue to support Bankstown Sports. I would also like to
thank our staff members who consistently work hard to provide you
with all the services you require.
Bankstown Sports has recently opened the new Club Carwash in
the carpark. This is a great initiative for our members and means
you can easily have your car spruced up while you relax and enjoy
yourself at the club. See the full story on Page 15.
Other achievements of note this year include the expansion of
the car park and the successful launch of The Grand Ballroom and
the Grand Hall. Also soon to open is the new outdoor terrace. The
terrace is located near the entry to the Grand Ballroom.
The club will also have a new look website up and running before
Christmas which is easier to navigate and provides all the ready
information members need. I would encourage you to make use of
these facilities and to let us know what you think about them.
The UCI World Masters track cycling at the Dunc Gray Velodrome
in late October attracted 430 competitors from 16 countries, the
largest-ever field in the 15-year history of the event. It was the third
and final year of the club’s commitment to holding the event and
Australia’s riders garnered the highest number of medals.
Thanks must go to the volunteers who gave their time to support
this event, without them it would not have been possible.
We are very proud to have received a CRS Award in September as
a large employer in NSW providing jobs for people with a disability.
CRS was once known as the Commonwealth Rehabilitation Service
and helps people who have been injured or have a disability to find
employment. You can read more about the award on page 12.
This is a special Christmas edition of InTouch, and the holiday spirit
is in full evidence here at the club with our beautiful decorations
creating quite a splash. Bookings for Christmas Day dining are still
available at Baulkham Hills Sports but fully booked elsewhere.
You can find all the details, as well as some last minute gift ideas
inside this issue.
A reminder to all members that Channel 7’s Sydney Weekender
program will replay their story about La Piazza and Platform One on
Saturday December 19 – be sure to watch the show from 5.30pm.
Very shortly we will begin the festive season when our thoughts
will turn to family and friends on the occasion of Christmas and
the New Year.
May I, on behalf of the board of directors and the executive
management, wish each and every one a happy Christmas and
a New Year that is blessed with good fortune.

The Christmas season has well and truly arrived and your club is once
again putting on the festive spirit with our beautiful decorations. If you
haven’t made it along yet, bring the kids and come and see the club in
all its finery for the yuletide celebrations.
On Sunday December 13, the Handle Bar Tavern will hold its
free Community Christmas Party from 12 noon to 4pm with live
entertainment, giveaways, an animal farm and a visit from Santa.
See more details on page 37 or call 9743 9889.
But it’s not just all baubles and sparkle, there are carols, special Christmas
shows, visits by Santa, extra hams at bingo and Christmas hampers at
our Thursday Fill the Freezer raffle from 6.30pm in the Rainforest Lounge.
Baulkham Hills Sports is open for lunch on Christmas Day, bookings
essential, and they also have Christmas carol singers, a Christmas toy
raffle and a visit from Santa on Sunday, December 20 from 5.30pm.
See page 34 for more details or call 9639 2100.
Our executive chef, Helmut Gundendorfer, has also prepared three
Christmas recipes to share with you: Chefs orange glazed Christmas
ham, roast Christmas turkey with muscatel ricotta stuffing and morello
rosemary sauce and a summer strawberry strudel. You can watch him
preparing these dishes on the newly revamped Bankstown Sports
website at www.bankstownsports.com. The recipe for the strawberry
strudel is printed for you on page 11.

George and
June Wiltshire
Bankstown Sports Club regulars George
and June Wilshire have had so many
Christmases they can’t remember
them all, but one certainly stands out.
In December 1944, a 19-year-old June
went to a dance at Dee Why with one
of her friends and there she spotted
a handsome man in a British Navy
uniform. “I said to my friend, ‘see that
blonde sailor over there? I bet I can get
him before the night’s out.’ It wasn’t
very long before he came over and
asked me to dance, and 64 years later
we are still dancing!”

Like many others, Bruce McCarthy spends most Christmas Days at work.
The new manager of the Bankstown Sports bowls club, Bruce has spent
many years working over the Christmas break, as this is inevitably the
busiest time of the year. “All my life I’ve worked Christmas Eve and New
Year’s Eve,” he says. He doesn’t mind as he enjoys the work, but he is
looking forward to spending this Christmas at his new club. “The bowling
club will be pretty quiet but the main club - they go all out. They do the
decorations up and it’s absolutely beautiful up there. They dress it up
with sleighs and lights and Christmas trees everywhere. It’s an experience
- on a Sunday it’s like Disneyland.”

Wandering Christmas carollers will sing throughout Bankstown
Sports on Saturday December 19 and Sunday December 20
between 5.30 and 8.30pm, while at Baulkham Hills Sports, carols will
be sung between 5.30 and 6.30pm on Sunday December 20. Come
along and join in the fun.
While many people know the standard Christmas carols that are
sung and published widely every year, such as Silent Night and Joy
to the World, there are some very special Australian Christmas carols,
written by William G. James and John Wheeler (in 1948) that evoke
the summer season, our unique wildlife and our dry dusty continent.
These are songs that primary schoolers learned in the 1960s and,
while they are rarely heard these days, are quite unique and special.
In David Tunley’s book, William James and the beginning of modern
musical Australia, he writes: “It was a moment of inspiration to write
music for Christmas appropriate to the Australian landscape, and
s

strange that no-one had thought of doing so earlier. The Christmas
Carols, especially, found a ready response amongst church choirs
and amateur singers who conveyed their joyous musical message to
audiences everywhere – including overseas. A well-known English
choral conductor, Thornton Lofthouse, had come across them in
1957 on a tour of Australia, and on his return included a performance
of the first set in his annual carol concert in St. Paul’s Cathedral at
Christmas that year in the presence of the Queen.
“News of their success spread rapidly and The Australian Christmas
Carols soon became a feature of many a carol service. A couple of
years after this they were heard by millions in America when they
were featured on a coast-to-coast TV carols program hosted by
no less than Bing Crosby.”
So, here are the lyrics to two of these carols – Three Drovers and
The Carol of the Birds. Merry Christmas!
TH REE DROVER S
Across the plains one Chris
tmas night,
Three drovers riding blyth
e and gay,
Looked up and saw a star
ry light,
More radiant than the M
ilky Way;
And on their hearts such
wonder fell,
They sang with joy “Noel!
Noel!
Noel! Noel! Noel!”
The black swans flew acros
s the sky,
The wild dogs called acros
s the plain,
The starry lustre blazed on
high,
Still echoed on the Heaven
ly strain;
And still they sang “Noel!
Noel!”,
Those drovers three, “Noe
l! Noel!
Noel! Noel! Noel!”
The air was dry with su
mmer heat
And smoke was on the ye
llow moon;
But from the Heavens, fai
nt and sweet,
Came floating down a won
d’rous tune,
And as they heard, they san
g full well,
Those drovers three, “Noe
l! Noel!
Noel! Noel! Noel!”
Out on the plains the brolg
as are dancing
Lifting their feet like warho
rses prancing
Up to the sun the woodl
arks go winging
Faint in the dawn light ec
hoes their singing
Orana! Orana! Orana to Ch

Club award
recognises
extra effort
Bankstown Sports Club is one
of two large NSW businesses
to be awarded a CRS Australia
Employer Award recently.
The award recognizes the
club’s commitment to
providing employment for
people with a disability.
Bankstown Sports delivered
a four-week training program
to seven CRS job seekers
with a disability to improve
their skills and opportunities
for employment. They worked as catering
assistants, kitchen hands, car park attendants, door attendants and
bar attendants. At the end of the training period, three job seekers
were employed by the club.
In all, 11 businesses in the ACT and NSW (small, medium and large)
won awards at a special ceremony at the Australian Maritime
Museum in Darling Harbour in late September.
General Manager CRS Australia, Margaret Carmody, says, “CRS
Australia works with employers to carefully match individuals to a
job in order to ensure employers’ needs are met. Hospitality isn’t an
industry for everyone so it was vital that we worked with Bankstown
Sports Club to ensure the right job seekers were put forward.”
The club’s Human Resources Manager, Graeme Ayling, says “the club
focussed on creating a good fit between the job seeker and the
role. This took time and involved considerable interaction with CRS
Australia to make sure the match was perfect. We have found this is
the best way to achieve a successful placement.
“Having the job seekers on board helps us to be recognised as a
compassionate employer. This is important to us and our staff. It is
their word of mouth and sense of satisfaction of being given a fair
go that helps to generate a positive workforce.
“This can be a very rewarding process when you get it right and
help get someone back up on their feet,” Graeme says.
One in five Australians have one or more reported disabilities –
including physical, intellectual and mental health disabilities.
CRS Australia is the country’s largest provider of vocational
rehabilitation and assessment, helping over 50,000 job seekers
each year.
Margaret Carmody says, “Taking on a job seeker from CRS Australia
is positive for everyone – it means that businesses obtain enthusiastic
job seekers who have been carefully matched to the job. It also
means the job seeker achieves their goals, fulfils their potential and
contributes to the local community. The positive benefits of work are
life changing.”

YOUNG FASHION
DESIGNER ANNOUNCED
Congratulations to Dung Tran of Regents Park who is the overall winner
of the Bankstown Sports Club 2009 Young Fashion Designer Awards
announced at the club on Melbourne Cup Day. Her violet-coloured
design featured a fitted, striped corset and ruffled skirt. Dung drew
her inspiration from the opera Adriana Lecouvreur written by Italian
composer Francesco Cilea.
Five of nine finalists were awarded with either a share of $4000 prize
money or a Sassy Boutique voucher worth $500. Dung claimed $2000
prize money for her effort.
Further congratulations to winners Bojana Zjacic of Fairfield Heights
(Most Innovative) with her Garden of Eden-inspired wedding dress,
Jacqueline Connors of Charlestown (Best Workmanship) for her junglethemed dress, and voucher winners Ruth Fattal of Wattlegrove and
Tegan Whiting of Alfords Point.
Many fantastic entries from budding local and interstate designers were
received. The competition was open to anyone aged 15 to 30. Garments
were judged on creativity, use of textiles, technicality and presentation.
Each finalist’s entry was displayed in a fashion parade and judged by a
panel consisting of the Mayor of Bankstown, Tania Mihailuk, Group Sales
Manager of Torch Publishing, Marsha Vescio, and Albert Elkout of Sassy
Boutique in Bankstown.

Centenarian
celebrates in style
Happy birthday to Baulkham Hills Sports Club’s oldest member, Ethel
Giles, who celebrated her 100th year on September 24!
Ethel and some of her extended family – she has three children, seven
grandchildren and four great grandchildren – had lunch at the club on
the 24th, followed by a party on Saturday the 26th with more family
and, on October 17, she was invited to morning tea with all of the other
centenarians with the Governor Marie Bashir at Government House.
Ethel’s son Graeme says his mum was born in Glebe but has lived all
over Sydney (Campsie, Leichhardt, Haberfield). She has been a Baulkham
Hills resident for about 19 years, living on her own since 1992 when
husband Alf passed away suddenly. (It’s important to note that Ethel’s
mother lived to the age of 94 and also lived by herself for a long time
after the death of her husband.) Both sons Graeme and Ron live in the
Hills district while daughter Glenys Famechon lives in Melbourne.
Graeme describes Ethel as “a wonderful caring person. Her mind is
strong and keeps up with all the news and enjoys family and friends to
come for a chat. We regularly take her to the sports club for dinner and
one day each week she is taken out for lunch by her daughter-in-law
which she greatly enjoys. Not bad for a 100 year old!
14 Bankstown Sports InTouch
“It’s amazing to think what has transpired in the world over her life of
100 years and she often says that she can’t believe she has attained this
wonderful age.”
Attending the lunch at Baulkham Hills Sports with Ethel were: her
children Ron (with wife Tricia), Graeme and Glenys, grandchildren
Andrew (with wife Leanne), Megan, Fiona, Kerryn (with husband Peter),
great grandchild Aiden and friends Carol Mears and Meg Briscoe.
A new level of luxury:
Club Carwash opens
It can sometimes be hard to justify spending money on a car wash
when all it takes is some free time, some elbow grease and a sunny
day. But let’s face it, how many other things would we rather be
doing instead?
eggs benedict ($12), a full breakfast (fried eggs, crisp bacon,
chipolata sausages, truss tomatoes, mushrooms, a thick slice of toast,
coffee and orange juice) for just $12 or strawberry pancakes with
maple syrup and cream ($9).
Bankstown Sports’ Club Carwash has recently opened in the car park
and is offering standard, deluxe and executive services as well as interior
and exterior detailing. Plus there are great discounts for members.
Members can use Calypso reward points towards their car wash
and will receive points when a carwash is purchased.
Prices for members start from $20 for an external wash which includes
a hand wash and chamois dry, windows cleaned, door surroundings
wiped, tyres shined and vehicle fragranced. And that’s just for starters!
Carwash owners, Ben Ozdemir and Frank Demirez, are both very
experienced, owning reputable carwash and valet services in the city
and at Sydney Airport.
The deluxe wash ($25 members) includes an interior vacuum and
dashboard/console clean, while the executive wash – which is only $10
more at $30 – is a higher quality wash. Tyres and mudflaps are shined
too and insects and stains are removed.
These guys make the carwashing process as hassle-free as possible.
Simply follow the signs on the green level of the club car park, leave
your keys with the carwash attendant and head into the club to enjoy
yourself. When you return, your car will be sparkling. No waiting around
feeling bored.
Better still, you can purchase the carwash special breakfast on either
Saturday or Sunday at wichcraft Café between 7 and 11am to receive a
special $5 discount* on your car wash. The special menu includes
Detailing services start from $69 for members (non-members $99)
for a mini-detail and range up to $140 for members ($199 non-members)
for a full detail. Advanced bookings are preferred for detailing.

Helen Greenlees counts herself lucky
Huge jobs need hard workers. Luckily, Helen is a hard worker. Not only
has she just finished eight consecutive years of commerce study, she is
also responsible for the payment of 500 staff at Bankstown Sports Club.
Did we mention a husband and daughter?
“They encouraged me to keep going with my studies even though it
took six years part-time after TAFE. I know I would not have finished the
course if it hadn’t been for them,” says Helen.
Helen, of Baulkham Hills, moved here from China in 1989 to study
English. Initially needing two dictionaries to communicate (one English
and the other Chinese), Helen worked in a variety of jobs at different
times to support her through her studies.
“I worked in sewing, as a nursing assistant and also as a dishwasher –
jobs where speaking English wasn’t essential,” says Helen. “I was always
going to work in accountancy though. My mother was an accountant
back in China so, back then, I chose accountancy to please my parents.
Now I work in accounts because I enjoy it.”
Cellar door comes to YOU
Helen began working for the club six years ago at Baulkham Hills. From
there she moved to various accounting jobs at Bankstown and, she says,
she doesn’t plan to leave any time soon.
Renowned chef and sommelier, Tim Graham, says more and more
Australians are appreciating quality wines and with that comes an
interest in the art of winemaking. Tim, a longtime restaurateur and
consultant to the food and wine industry, has been organising “meet
the winemaker dinners” around western Sydney for several years and is
bringing his wealth of knowledge to Bankstown Sports’ wine bar, The
Cellar.
Having graduated from Macquarie University on September 28 with a
Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) degree, Helen says she wouldn’t
have been able to get through her studies without the support of the
club’s management and her husband.
The Cellar is a cosy venue within the La Piazza precinct and has been a
bit of a secret until now, reserved for private functions of between 35-40
people. Tim wants to introduce members to more winemakers and will
host exclusive but affordable monthly winemaker events on Tuesday
nights.
As well, The Cellar is now open to members and guests every Thursday,
Friday and Saturday from 5.30pm till late. That means members can
simply drop in and sample one of the 30 wines available by the glass or
more than 250 wines by the bottle. “We’re bringing the cellar door to
the public,” Tim says. “It’s a great way of learning more about the process
of winemaking and also being able to meet winemakers face-to-face.
Their enthusiasm is infectious,” he says.
The Cellar’s launch event, held on Friday September 25, featured
everything from sparkling to muscat from four top Australian
winemakers – De Bortoli, Scarborough, Peter Lehmann and Buller –
matched with tasting plates for each wine, along the lines of a mini
degustation.
Three of the winemakers themselves, Ian Scarborough from the Hunter
Valley, Richard Buller from Rutherglen in Victoria and Julie Mortlock
from De Bortoli (NSW and VIC), attended on the night to speak about
their company’s long traditions of making wine. Sean Trenoweth, a
representative from Peter Lehmann wines in the Barossa Valley (SA) also
spoke glowingly about the winemaker’s craft. All are pictured above,
centre.
Later in the evening, as the Bulldogs went down to the Eels, guests were
treated to a surprise visit by the NSW Premier Nathan Rees, who was
pleasantly surprised by the venue.
16 Bankstown Sports InTouch
Tim Graham says, “Our wine list is the best Australian vignerons have
to offer, but we also have French champagne and cognacs, some New
Zealand Pinot noirs and Sauvignon blancs and a small but select list of
Italian wines in the cellar.”
Tim is also excited by the delivery of two state of the art Italian wine
dispensers, which will allow more expensive wines to be sampled by
customers. “You wouldn’t normally open a very expensive bottle just to
give one customer a tasting,” says Tim. “But these new dispensers will
keep the wine for up to three weeks, which means that more exclusive
top wines can be tasted by our patrons. It’s great news,” he says.
Only two other venues in Sydney that Tim knows of have the high-tech
dispensers. “The club is really going all out to make this a very special
venue,” he says.
“This wine bar is quite different from all of the other wine bars in Sydney,
because it is purely a wine bar – not a restaurant like so many others.
Bankstown Sports is really ahead of the game here, this venue was built
way before [Sydney Mayor and State MP] Clover Moore started pushing
for small bars around Sydney.”
“But the advantage is, there is terrific food available on either side of
the wine bar, so you can drop in for a pre-dinner drink before your meal
or night out, or you can eat right here – we have tapas and a range of
other delicious food to order in The Cellar.”
In November, Colin Peterson from Peterson’s Champagne House in the
Hunter Valley spoke to patrons at another wine-food matching event.
In 2010, many more high profile winemakers will come to The Cellar to
share their love and knowledge of the nectar of the gods. Among those
confirmed are: D’Arenberg Wines from McLaren Vale (SA), Brokenwood
from the Hunter Valley (NSW), Pikes Wines and Jim Barry Wines from the
Clare Valley (SA), Brown Brothers from Milawa (Vic) and the ubiquitous
McWilliam’s Wines.
“Putting it simply,” she says, “I’m happy. I could happily work at
Bankstown until I retire. The people are nice and I love my job.”
My island home
Jackie Ayres is a familiar face at Bankstown Sports. She’s a team leader at
’wichcraft cafe, in charge of 10 to 12 people, and has been an employee of the
club for 19 years doing a “bit of everything” since she started – from ordering
supplies to serving customers to being the “girl on the grill” in the Greenfield
bistro.
“I love it. I love customer service and meeting people of different nationalities.
There are new surprises every day,” says Jackie, who lives at Picnic Point with
her husband and son.
Born in the small island nation of Mauritius (off the coast of Africa in
the Indian Ocean), Jackie arrived here with her parents when she was aged in
her 20s.
She has family in three States and while she speaks a Mauritian creole
version of French with her family, if someone is speaking in French, she can
understand every word.
“I love to talk to people and meet new people, the faces are constantly
changing. We have the bingo players one day, then the line dancers, it’s so
much fun. The managers here are pretty great too,” she says.
Jackie wishes everyone a Joyeux Noel (Merry Christmas!)
Pop in and see Tim at The Cellar for more details in the New Year.

SPORTS
REPORT
Dear members,
Bankstown Sports
Since the last report, Bankstown
Bulls have won the State Cup
(coached by Terry Lamb)
and were semi-finalists in
the Bundaberg Red Cup,
an excellent effort for our
sponsored leagues teams.
cycling
During the winter 2009 cycling season junior Ben Harvey emerged
as a top cyclist to watch.
Beverley and myself, on our
first function since our holidays,
attended the Fishing Club’s annual dinner
and presentation night. It was a great night, well run with
excellent food, drinks and service.
In 2008, Ben won the Goulburn Junior Tour for road racing and
followed this up with a well deserved overall second place in the
2008 RAW Track racing series. This was an outstanding achievement
for what was effectively a solo effort without the team support of
other fancied cycling teams.
The Baulkham Hills Netball presentation day at Baulkham Hills
Sports Club on Sunday September 27 was a credit to their
committee. It was well planned and well attended.
The Aussie Rules club also had its presentation day on
September 27, in the club showroom. This club continues to
grow with a strong committee team in charge. The Aussie Rules
club also had a reunion for senior players, officials, and their
wives and partners on Saturday October 17 at the sports club.
On Friday, October 2, the 1974 Grand Final lunch saw some of
yesterday’s players and officials enjoy some quality time together
with plenty of good stories (mostly exaggerated). The two teams,
Canterbury and Parramatta, were well represented.
The Baulkham Hills Soccer junior presentation day on Sunday
October 4, at Castle Hill Showground (they have a total of 52
teams!), was also well attended. One team (U/11s) made the
semi-final of the State Cup, played at the Crest on Sunday
October 18 and sadly going down 1-3 to a very, very good side.
The Bulls presentation night on October 16 at “Concertos”,
Homebush was another good night with some more tales of
what could have been this season.
First Grade Ladies Cricket 20/20 team started their campaign
on Sunday October 18 with a loss to Gordon Club and a last
ball loss to Eastern Suburbs. Second grade scored a win over
Campbelltown-Camden, with third grade also losing by 4 runs.
A big finish to my report, our BDSC Cedars Volleyball team
won “Gold” at the World Masters on Sunday October 18.
Congratulations to Joe and the team.
I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Championships and fifth in the NSW U/23 40km Individual Time
Trial Championships. Ben finished second in the NSW Road Titles at
Kurrajong, second in the Winter Elite Track Cycling Championships
and first in Metro Elite Track Championships.
Ben was again placed second overall in the 2009 RAW Track series; he
has set the fastest times in the Goulburn-Interclub Invitational race and
was the first “B” grade rider to finish the recent Pengana Goulburn to Citi
Cycle Classic. Our congratulations to Ben for the excellent finish in the
Goulburn to Citi.
Baseball Club
Bankstown Sports
We have had a fantastic start to the season. The committee has worked
very hard getting the teams organised and registered on time. We have
recruited a number of new younger players which is very positive for
our club. We have teams in the U7s, U8s and U9s we also have teams in
the U12s, U14s and U16s. Next year we would like to increase this by one
team and also have a Tiny Tots squad who can play T-ball.
We have a number of teams who have been very competitive so far this
season and have a very good chance of making the semi finals. Please
see www.bankstownsports.basball.com.au for the dates and times of the
semis and come down and show your support. Alternatively, you can
email us at [email protected] for further information.
Three players from our club made the U16 representative
team this year. They are Robert Westerweller, Adam
Simpson and Kieran Hill-Starr. We wish them and all the
other players that made the U12 and U14 teams all the
best for the season.
By the time you read this report we will be nearing our

to invite you to come down to watch any
of our teams when they are playing at our

Our season came to an end on August 29 and we are happy to report
that our 9yrs Willows, 12C Cropley’s, and 14B Kareela’s finished the
season as Premiers! The 10A Beresford’s, 10D Jamieson’s, A1 Lindsay’s and
Cadet Sierra’s were runners-up on the day. Well done to all!!
2009 has been a very successful season for all the teams playing in the
Maroon and Gold of Baulko. The results achieved by all teams would
not be possible without the time and dedication of the coaches and
managers from our division. To all of you, thank you from the executive
and members.
Our Presentation Day was held in the Events Centre at Baulkham Hills
Sports Club on Sunday September 27. It was attend by Dick Phillips and
his wife Beverly, which we really did appreciate so much as they had
only just arrived home from overseas a couple of days before.
Our club person for 2009 was Emma Cowley - thanks Emma for your
dedication to netball. Emma not only plays each week for our A Res team
but this year she co coached our 14B Premier team, umpired both morning
and afternoon games. Emma has also been recognised by Baulkham Hills
Shire Netball Association for her great umpiring skills and this year was
selected to umpire at State Championships held in June. She has also
been invited to umpire State League games. In her spare time, Emma
also coached and mentored our junior umpires, which was very much
appreciated by our umpiring committee.
Congratulations to all our award recipients for 2009. To see a full list
of those who received awards visit our website.
At Baulkham Hills Shire Netball Association Presentation afternoon,
Lorraine Everitt (our President) received the Coaches Award. Lorraine
coached two teams for the Division:12C Cropley’s (Premiers) and A1
Lindsay’s (Runners-up). At Association level she coached the 0/35yrs
team at State Championships to equal first place. In her spare time,
Lorraine co-ordinated the Fun Net program for the association, which
this year had over 100, 5 and 6-year-olds learning new netball skills each
Saturday. Not any easy task!

Kath Tetley received the Spirit of Coaching Award. Kath received
her Level 2 coaching certificate this year. She also coached a State
League team for the association. This team of younger kids played
in Division 6, finishing runners-up in a very close game, just losing
to Bankstown by 1 goal.
Lorraine Everitt and her team of assistants -16members from Baulko received the Stratosphere Trophy for Excellence to BHSNA for all their work
with the young girls who attended the Fun Net Program each week.
Good Luck to our members who are representing the association in the
Inter-District Night Comp which started on September 30.
The Baulko colours of Maroon and Gold were also seen on the netball
courts at the World Masters Games. Our players included Simonne
Dallaway, Jodi Adams, Cathy Nuttall, Sally Coulter, Karen Wylde, Belinda
Hill, Karen O’Connor and Cassie Arthur. Watch out for their results in the
next issue of InTouch.
By the time you read this report, our registration for 2010 season and

all our members returning for season 2010.
Thank you to the Board of Directors at Bankstown Sports Club and the

Hockey Club
BAnkstown sports
Vale Warren Anderson
Bankstown Sports lost one of its greatest assets in August when Hockey
Club President Warren Anderson passed away.
• The Eastern District Women’s team completed their season with a
well-earned Grand Final victory 1-0 over the Dolphins. It was a great
year for first time women’s coach Robbie Palmer.
Warren was a tireless worker and a great people person. He believed
in them and they believed in him. His involvement covered all aspects
of the club: administration, planning, juniors, seniors and social. Warren
was a real hands-on person.
• Our men’s 3rd Grade team went down in their Grand Final, the 4th
and 5th Grade men also made the semi-finals. Well done all teams.
The young ones in the club were very special to him, they were the
future - from little things big things grow. The hurt still runs deep in
the club and will for a long time, everyone was very supportive of each
other. Warren would have wanted that ... his legacy lives on.
Congratulations
• To our U/13’s who were Minor Premiers and Grand Final winners over
Sutherland – 2-1. The team was well coached by Warren Cabral.
• The U/17 boys won their Grand Final 2-1 against N.W. Strikers. It was
a very good effort by Coach Robbie Sutton’s boys, they often were
short in numbers but never in commitment.
• Our ‘Baby Boomerangs’, the U/11’s, were defeated 1-0 in their grand
final in double extra time. A great effort.
• The U/15’s were not far off the money either finishing third.
Kookaburras at Bankstown
The Australian Men’s Hockey Team, The Kookaburras chose to train
at Bankstown in August in preparation for their Tri-Nation qualifying
rounds of the World Cup. After a two hour training session, the team
signed autographs and joined the Bankstonians in a BBQ and buffet
dinner. Coach Rick Charlesworth, players and staff were overwhelmed
by the welcome they received. Many a tired little future Kookaburra or
Hockeyroo went to sleep that night with big smiles still on their faces.
To Bankstown Sports for their continued support again this year, we are
proud to play under the Sporties banner. Thank you to our members
who supported the club so well and gave so much of their time to the
benefit of so many others.

HOCKEY CLUB
The Baulkham Hills Hockey Club, which caters for junior players (boys
and girls) 15 years and under enjoyed a successful 2009 winter season. Of
the four teams entered in the North Area competition within the Sydney
Junior Hockey Association, three made it to the finals series.
The Under 11 team, coached by Kent Pooley and Bopaiah Baduvanda,
consisted of many players in their first year of hockey. Despite this,
they finished the season as Joint Premiers and their coaches were the
deserving recipients of the Club’s Quentin Howarth Trophy for Coach
of the Year.
The Under 13 Kookas reached the semi-finals after a gritty season
containing some hard-fought results and a few injuries. All the players
in this team improved their skills enormously, for which they have
their coach Brett Hardiman to thank. Chris McRae, a representative
player and member of this team, was awarded the Jarryd Hill (Under 11
Encouragement) Trophy for his outstanding season playing in a higher
age group.
The Dick Morris Trophy for the Most Promising Junior Player went to
another representative player and member of the Under 13 Bulls team:
Adrian Rochester.
This team enjoyed an undefeated run throughout the season until the grand
final, which was an exciting although ultimately disappointing match. The
team is made up of a very talented group of kids who enjoy encouragement
and support from one another as well as from their dedicated coach, Darren
Thomas. Also on this team are Cody Thomas, who was the Baulkham Hills
Sports Club’s Sports Person of the Year, and five other representative players.
The Under 15 team and their coaches, Ron Saunderson and Kevin
Nelson, demonstrated the most remarkable resilience in a season of
heavy defeats. They all turned up every week to training sessions and
matches and served as an example of the importance of developing
skills and enjoying the game in spite of the results. Good luck to those
who now leave the Club as they graduate to senior hockey: Harrison
Fonagy, Diya Isaac and Katarina Zdrilic.
Finally, the most prestigious Club Spirit Award (Bob Woosnam Trophy)
went to Kyle Mackenzie, a 2008 valedictorian whose commitment to
umpiring and attendance at training and matches made him a valuable
role model for the younger players all year.

SWIMMING
July to October were hectic for our swimmers who competed at
interclub and State meets.
We had five swimmers qualify and compete at the State Open
Swimming Championships at the end of July and a big contingent of
swimmers competed at the 2009 Swimming Metro South West Short
Course Championships in early August.
Congratulations to Rebecca Wheatley who performed well in Hobart at
the Australian Open Short Course Championships in August. Her hard
work paid off with some good times registered.
Eighteen swimmers competed at the Swimming NSW State Age Short
Course Championships in late August. As always it was a tough meet
with some great swimming. Of the 53 swims over the weekend, 33
personal best times were swum. That’s a great effort.
Medals were won by: Jake Hodgetts – 1 gold (13yrs 200m Freestyle –
just missing out on the State record), 2 silver (13yrs 200m IM and 13yrs
100m Freestyle); Jacob Hansford – 1 gold (13yrs 200m Butterfly), Stacey
Hansford – 1 silver 17/18yrs 200m Butterfly). Jake, Jacob, Stacey and
Zach Hansford had top 10 finishes in various events throughout the
weekend.
Our swimmers will be competing in Open Water and Ocean swims during
the summer as well as Metropolitan Championships this month and State
Championships next month.
Our Learn-to-Swim classes are on Sunday morning (7.30am) for
children (5-13yrs) and adults each Monday night (7pm).

The Darts Club extends the Season’s Greetings to all Club
Management, staff and members and wish everyone a happy
and prosperous 2010.
The 2009/2010 season began on September 12. This season we
have 30 teams, an increase of one on last season, making us the
largest club in the association. We have 14 senior and 16 junior
teams. Juniors range from U16 to U10’s where we have four teams.
A special vote of thanks to Senior Registrar Tony Senior and Junior
Secretary Phil Waddups for their efforts. Thanks to the management
committee, age co-ordinators, coaches, senior captains, grading
committee and many other helpers for your work.
The early rounds saw some excellent early season
performances. In round one juniors, Blake Newman (U15/1A)
scored 135 n.o. and Ryan Bailey (U16/2) made 98 n.o. A number
of others made in excess of 50, whilst Antonio Castellarin
(U15/1B) took 6/11.
In round one seniors, B3B players Matthew Hardy (138) and Josh
Freeman (121) both batted well, whilst in B15’s Ben Hawes had
a great double – taking 5/8 and making 108. In round 2 juniors,
Jamie Bugden of the U13/3’s made 109 n.o.
The in2cricket has commenced and we have 80 children
enrolled in the program, which caters for 5-8 year olds and is a
great lead in to our U10 teams. Co-ordinator Chris Springall and
his team are doing a great job running the program which will
conclude in mid December.
All our usual social and club events are again taking place, with
our fortnightly meat raffle and badge draw at the Baulkham
Hills Sports Club proving successful.
The representative season is about to start and a number of
Baulko players have been selected in the PDCA teams for the
NSW DCA competition. The players are:
U15 Weblin Shield: Joel Pienmunne
U14 Moore Shield: Blake Newman, James Robertson.
U13 Gee Shield: George Joseph, Ravi Marwah
U12 Cawsey Shield: Michael Bellam, James Gardiner,
and Jake Smith.
U11 Creak Shield: Jason Luther
Blake Newman was also selected in the Parramatta AW Green

At the AGM, Life Membership was awarded to Terry Minton.
This was most deserved as Terry has put in countless hours
over many years and is still just as active within the club.
At the presentations, major award winners were:
Junior Sportsman: Matthew Doherty.
Senior Sportsman: Jim Moreland
Cathy Ellis Award: Robert Glass.
The season was completed in late August. The club had four
Grand Final winners – U11/1, U16/2, Senior 13 White and Over
35/4 – and another seven teams who narrowly lost in the
Grand Final – U9/1, U9/2, U13/1, U14/1 girls, U17/2, Senior 9
and Over 35/2. The club also had four Grand Champions, four
League Champions, 11 Grand Finalists, 21 teams in the top four
positions and eight Pennant winners.
Our U11 Division 1 and U13 Division 1 teams represented
Granville in the Champion of Champions Tournament.
This competition is played is a knockout between all the
division one league champions in each association in NSW.
Unfortunately, the U13 were defeated in the early rounds, but
at the time of writing, the U11’s had progressed to the last four.
Well done to both teams!

Since our last report, we have had inter-district games as well as our
normal club games. On August 28, the Sunbeam Trophy was played
with 16 teams present from various clubs. The overall winners were
Picnic Point (team J. Brennan), runner-up Revesby (team N. Tatauna),
morning winners Revesby Workers (team V. J. Smith), afternoon winners
Bankstown City (team B. Barnes). This is always a very successful trophy
day. It began in 1980 and we look forward to its continued success.
Congratulations to Chairman Match Vera Lowe who was selected
to represent Georges River District against Eastern Suburbs at South
Coogee on September 16.
Major Singles: Ray Brooker defeated John Bottin.
Minor Singles: Trevor Wood defeated Stephen Pitt
Pairs championships:
Tony Campbell and Graeme Ison defeated Peter Donsworth

The following ladies were selected to play in the Bale Brook Trophy at

ladies were also selected to play in the inter-district against Sutherland
shire on October 16.
Sean Leavey, Neville Lane and Joe Collister defeated Tony Campbell,
Barry McKenna and Graeme Ison
Fours Championships:
We held our Annual General Meeting on August 18. Congratulations to
incoming President Evelyn White, we hope you enjoy your term of office.
This day was a most important day as a special meeting was called at
the conclusion of the AGM. To consider a change of name for the Ladies
Club. This was voted on by all financial-member players present and was
well received.
As from Thursday October 1 2009, the Ladies Club has the new name of
Bankstown Sports Women’s Bowling Club.
On a sad note, we were shocked at the sudden passing of esteemed
member Merline Kerrison in late August. Merline was a very quiet,
unassuming person and will be missed by all her friends.
As we approach the festive season, on behalf of all the women, we wish
each and everyone A Merry Xmas and a Happy, Healthy, New Year.
After quite a number of wash outs during the season Strikers lost
opportunities to host some prestigious games however all was
forgotten when we hosted the Champion of Champions Semi
Finals on Fields 1 – 3 with champions from many districts including
Wollongong, Newcastle and Western Sydney bringing their best
game. Excellent football was played on fields that had been prepared
to top condition – out of area teams were in awe of the fantastic
grounds with many officials, spectators and visitors commenting
on how fortunate we are to have first class fields at this time of year.
A superb effort by the club volunteers who manned the barbecue
and canteen and dressed the fields for this full day event. I’m sure
when we had a special guest pop in from Bankstown Sports Club
he would have been impressed with how well Strikers represented
our district.
Brett Pengilley, Joe Hanna, Allan Brooker and John Bottin defeated K.K.
Kwok, Neville Lane, Ray Neaves and Charlie Bartolillo.
Congratulations to all participants.
We invite all people who may be interested in playing lawn bowls to
our wonderful facility. We can provide coaching and guidance to assist
all new members, whether your interest is social or competitive play.
Be part of the club with an 80-year history, now with the support of

Our final celebration for the year was our 50th Anniversary Gala

excellent evening with past and present club members and
dignitaries having an opportunity to share memories, food and
drinks and guest speakers.
Our AGM was held on November 18 at the Handle Bar Tavern.

can be seen on our website and we really
appreciate their support and hope they come
onboard with us in 2010. If you are interested in

The 2009 season has been a great success for the Bankstown Sports
Football Club.
In our non-competitive category, 8 Orange performed valiantly to
become minor premiers.
The competitive grand finalist runners-up included our 9/1, 10/1
and 16/2 teams, with the 11/3, 12/2 and 16/1 teams adding to BSFC’s
impressive trophy collection by winning their respective grand finals.
We were also represented at the Champion of Champions competition,
where the 16/1s were defeated in penalty shoot-out in the second
round against Peakhurst (from the St George Association).
These fantastic results could not have been possible without the
dedication of the players, parents and volunteers who are the pillars
of our club.
Athletics
Bankstown Sports
Once again the club was very proud of our two representatives in the
Australian team in the World Championships in Berlin. Luke Adams had
an excellent World Championships, coming sixth in the 50km walk after
being 18th in the 20km event. Youcef Abdi ran his usual gutsy race over
the 3000m steeplechase but could not make it to the second round.
The club performed extremely well in the State Half Marathon winning
most age categories. In the State Marathon, Mustapha Takiedinne came
second. In state titles, the club retained the men’s and women’s 55yrs
championships and the men’s 65 yrs title. In second place were the girls
Under 14 years, the women’s 45yrs teams and the men’s Open “B” team.
The club was very well-served by two enthusiastic captains in Mary
Sheehan and Chris Timson.
Five club juniors were chosen to represent NSW at Nowra in the
Australian Cross Country Championships - Matthew Cox, Jason Hall,
Dylan Dudley, Stephanie Kalemusic and Madyson Gleeson-Romer.
Dudley’s ninth overall and third NSW runner was the best result.
In the “G.K. Cup” Handicap Knockout Final, back marker, Bart Cupitt was
too strong for Bob Thiel from scratch marker, Clarence Carabello. Club
President, Col Whitbread, showed his prowess as a distance runner with
a very gutsy win in the final race in the series, the ‘Monners’ Trophy.
Most of the special field of 12 entered the final straight with only metres
separating them, reflecting excellent handicapping by Terry Kintominas.
Eighteen club members competed in the World Masters Games.
Sprinters Giola Campbell, the Australian champion, and Belinda
Cosgrove led the sprinters while Phillip Carrero was the pole vault star.
50 Bankstown Sports InTouch
Many of the members of the winning winter teams participated in
events from 800m to the Half Marathon, some competing four times in
eight days.
Club athletes performed very well in State Championships for schools.
Junior club athletes in this group included Emily Mantle, Stephanie
Kalemusic, Kristin Kalemusic, Anna Collier, Tahlia Hunter, Monica Young
and Katherine Whiteside.
The club executive remains unchanged with Col Whitbread as president;
Tom Dolan as secretary, Terry Kintominas as treasurer, and Matthew
Whitbread and Lindsay Watson as the vice-presidents. It is worth noting
that three of the committee who did a great job in 2008-2009, Matthew
Whitbread, James Pisani and Chris Timson, only completed their HSCs
last year and have continued in their roles.
Two longstanding and very committed club members, Dianne Hillsdon
and her husband Roger, were made Life Members. The Junior Sport for
the year was Lisa Celi and the Senior Sport was Giola Campbell. James
Pisani was voted the Volunteer of the Year.
Looking ahead, registrations for the 2010 season will take place in
February for all ages from our increasingly popular Kindy Squad
(three and four year olds) through to the Over 35 Men’s team.
Dates for registrations will be advertised in The Torch and on the
Bankstown Sports website (www.bankstownsports.com).
BSFC will extend the Small Sided Games (SSG) concept next year to
include 6s, 7s, 8s and 9s age groups. SSG are a modified form of the
11-a-side football game we all know and love. They are designed to
meet the development needs of players under the age of 13 and
international studies show that SSG are enjoyed more by children
and are a more effective method of improving their technical ability
as footballers.
Adoption of the SSG program has many benefits, including:
• a game tailored for our younger players
• more fun and individual enjoyment due to smaller fields
and simplified rules
• more game time, which encourages individual participation
and involvement
• far more repeated touches of the ball by all players on the field
• more shots on goal
• more involvement leading to greater improvement in fitness.
Definitely something to look forward to for our champions
of tomorrow!
Thanks again to all the players, parents, families and supporters,
without whom these successes could not have been possible.
Bring on the 2010 season!
After six months of registrations, the club is quickly approaching its
target of 300. It reflects the club’s aims of catering for athletes of all ages
and abilities in all disciplines of athletics. The weekly Tuesday evening
series which start at 6.45pm are a good opportunity for people to get
fit. There is always an event over 2km and people can run, jog or walk
it. One week it is on the paths in the Crest bushland and on the other
around the criterium. Come along and join in!

During September, we had our 40th AGM and the bowlers re-elected
the committee they know can run the games efficiently for 2009/2010.
On the very same night we celebrated the club’s 40th anniversary and
enjoyed many laughs.
We are all looking forward to the Christmas and New Year’s break from
December 10 and resuming on January 7 next year. Those wishing to
join us next year can contact us in person at 6.45pm on Level 1, Room 4
A, B, C and D every Thursday night and you will be most welcome.
One more thing, if you happen to be passing close to Platform 1 on
the evening of December 10 and you hear loud noises coming out of
the carriage, you will know it’s the bowlers celebrating the end of the
season.
