FOUNDER, Jack Thorburn
Shown is Jack Thorburn, who founded the
company in 1954, enjoying one of his passions,
sailing. Unfortunately, Jack passed away on
February 16th 1995. He will be sorely missed.
The company’s leadership passed on to Jack’s
eldest son, Robert, in September 1994.

CUSTOM METAL HOSE ASSEMBLIES
Collar

Purpose
Thorburn's annular corrugated metal hose assemblies are made up
of three major parts: metal hose, overbraid and end fittings. Assemblies
achieve several objectives in pipework design: absorb vibration,
supress rigid pipe transmitted noise, accommodate reciprocating
and flexing movement and adjust or correct for minor misalignment.

Custom Designs
Thorburn is geared to provide enduser designed hose assemblies. You
specify the operating conditions and
we will produce a hose. The hose
may be exceptionally flexible or you
may need several hoses encapsulated in outer hose: a jacketed hose
for heat exchange; an armoured hose;
a hose to carry sensitive cables; an
articulated robotic cover; an insulated
hose; a colour coded hose. Our "cando" design specialists are only a phone
call away.
CHARACTERISTICS
Hose
Thorburn's stainless steel annular corrugated hose body provides the flexible and pressure tight core of the assembly. Thorburn's manufactured annular
corrugated hose tends to be more flexible and
lower stressed than a helical product. The pitch of the
hose can be varied to achieve performance requirements in
both flexibility and pressure rating.
End Fittings
This is the means by which the custom-designed assembly is attached into the pipework system.
Braided hoses accept lateral
motion only
Braid
When pressure is introduced into corrugated hose, it tends to open
axially. The pressure acts upon each corrugation at the rate of the
effective diameter of the corrugation, multiplied by the line pressure.
The job of Thorburn's tight weave braid is to prevent elongation.
Fitting the braid to the corrugated tube also increases the hoop
strength, stabilizes movement and offers a form of abrasion protection. The core hose, a braid collar and the tight weave
braid are welded together to give the "live length" of assembly. Braid is made of stainless steel, Monel or bronze wire, woven
in such a way that line pressure produces braid tension which is dissipated into inward radial pressure. Thorburn's multiple
braided assemblies accommodate higher pressures. As the braid is stretched in an operating assembly, it will not accept
axial motion.

Thorburn's "Tight weave" braid design is carefully calculated to ensure that the number of wire gauge and the
angle of lay give optimum performance. After the attachment of the end fittings, the hose is pressure tested to
1-1/2 times the working or design pressure and test certificates can be supplied if required.
Thorburn's standard annular flexible core starts its life
as a coil of stainless steel strip which is mechanically
formed into a tube and then longitudinally butt welded.
Considerable care is taken to ensure that the strength of
the butt weld is greater than that of the parent material.
This rigid tube is then transferred to the corrugating machine where the corrugations are formed. After the tube
has been corrugated, it is pressure tested to ensure that
there are no leaks.
Why Buy Thorburn Annular formed Corrugated Metal Hose Assemblies
Annular (parallel) Corrugations
Helical (spiral) Corrugations
VS
Separate corrugations form a
circle or ring in itself
Spiral path with one continuous corrugation
running the length of the hose
Thorburn's standard metal hose core is corrugated into
a close pitch annular profile. These annular corrugations
permit the hose to be bent or isolate lateral deflection
while remaining liquid and gas tight.
VS
Helical corrugations tend to be less flexible and yield
higher stress under flexural movement. In other words
1) helical assembly takes more force to bend and requires longer lengths to make a bend; 2) helical assembly life is more adversely affected by flexure movement
resulting in a shorter life.
Thorburn's annular corrugations permit the hose assembly to absorb its thermal activated extension and compression movements.
VS
Helical corrugations have a tendency to twist when
subjected to extension and compression movement. In
other words, if your flexible hose component is subjected to a change in temperature, the hose could fail
prematurally.

Application
Thorburn’s high pressure NS99Z metallic high pressure hose
assemblies were specifically designed to transfer heavy water in a fuel handling system found in a CANDU 6 nuclear
power generating station. This hose can be manufactured to
meet the design requirements of ASME Section III and CSA
N285.0 components in CANDU nuclear power plants. Another ideal application is to transfer gaseous hydrogen to
and from the bulk transport truck to the customer facility.

EXTRAFLEX is used when temperature extremes, corrosive
media, or permeation preclude the use of rubber, PTFE, or
plastic hose.
EXTRAFLEX is a spirally-welded corrugated hose specifically designed to
achieve extreme flexibility and excellent pressure ratings.
This unique hose features self-draining and minimal line
turbulence characteristics. EXTRAFLEX is available in T321
and T316L stainless steel and is stocked in lengths of up to
80 feet.
Typical applications for EXTRAFLEX are found in the compressed gas, food processing, and steel making industries.
These applications include clean-in-place, automatic lubrication and self-draining fluid lines.
Our Standard Hose is Type 321 - Stainless Steel (Braided Type 304)

Minimum Live Length
Determine the centerline bend radius required for your
application. Under the column headed "Centerline bend
radius in inches", find your radius and read horizontally to the desired degree of bend (45 o, 90 o or 180o).
The number in that column will be the minimum live
length required to make that degree of bend along the
desired centerline radius.
Note: Add fitting length dimension "A" plus the minimum live length to calculate OAL.

A piping system which utilizes Thorburn flexible metal hose assemblies to absorb pipe movement must be
properly anchored and guided to assure correct functionning and maximum service life of the metal hose. The
basic principles to be observed are:
1) The direction of pipe motion must be perpendicular to the center line (axis) of the hose.
2) The pipe must be anchored at each change of direction where a flexible metal hose is employed to prevent
torsional stress.
Typical examples of correct and incorrect guiding are shown below.

When pulsating, surge or shock pressures exist, these have
a marked effect on the service life of metal hoses. If this
situation is encountered, the peak pressure must not exceed
50% of the maximum working pressure.

High velocities in corrugated hose should be avoided as the
corrugations could be forced into resonant vibrations resulting in premature fatigue failure. Where the flow velocity
exceeds 100 ft/sec for gas or 50 ft/sec for liquid in unbraided
hose and 150 ft/sec for gas or 75 ft/sec for liquid in braided
hose, an interlock hose should be used as a liner. When the
hose is installed in a bent condition, these flow values should
be reduced by 50% for a 90o bend, 25% for a 45o bend and
so on, proportionally to the angle of bend. Where velocity
exceeds the above values, the next lager size of hose with
liner should be used.
Pressure Loss
As a rough estimate, it can be assumed that the pressure
loss in corrugated hoses is 100% higher than in new welded
steel pipes, and in stripwound hoses it is 20% higher. This
means that in the case of corrugated hoses an increase in
diameter of 15% and in the case of stripwound hoses of only
4% is sufficient to reduce the pressure loss to the value of
the pressure loss in steel pipes. For more accurate calculations, consult Thorburn engineering with application details.

A single interlocking strip of metal is spirally wound to
form a durable, standard bore flexible hose. Depending upon the material used, packing, and strip thickness, a standard bore metal hose can operate in a
variety of temperatures ranging from -100oF to +1200oF.
Standard bore metal hose can be manufactured from
various grades of most stainless steel alloys, aluminum,
bronze, brass, aluminized, galvanized and tin plate.

Thorburn's "LS" series is an "S" lock section hose that
is primarily designed for conveying air, exhaust and
dry bulk products. Thorburn's "LS" series hose is available packed or unpacked.
For additional leak proofing, a continuous strand is
inserted into the groove of the Thorburn "LS" series
hose during manufacturing. The strand is sealed inside the hose, and will not contaminate the product
during transference.

Thorburn's Armour-Flex has a "square-locked"
profile, and is available either with or without
packing. Extremely flexible, not pressure tight,
but with packing can be considered moisture
tight. As protective conduit, it is used widely on
such products as electrical appliances, electronic equipement, instruments, etc.

Compensator

■

■
■
The compensator connects flexible metal hose to fittings, rubber hose, pipe, etc. without cementing or
welding. This keeps the compensator and fitting usable if the metal hose fails. Welding in most cases will
locally "burn out" the metal hose packing and cause air leaks.
The compensator absorbs vibration and stress at the solid connection. This protects the flexible hose from
premature failure caused by over stressing.
The compensator can be used for "on-sight" repairs in remote operations where welding and cementing are
not feasable. Installs in 5 to 15 minutes with just a screw driver if screw type band clamps are used to mount
the compensator.
Temperature range -65o to 285 oF.
Used indoors or outdoors.

■ Chemical Inertness: Teflon won't decompose or break down in the most
corrosive environments and it is inert to practically all commercial chemicals,
acids, alcohols, coolants, elastomers, petroleum compounds, solvents, vinyls,
synthetic lubricants and hydraulic fluids.
■ Temperature Resistant: Operating range of -100oF to 500 oF means hose
stays flexible at low temperatures, strong at high temperatures.
Flexibility
when you
need it!
■ Flex and Shock Resistance: Thorburn T-Flex is not affected by continuous flexing, vibration or impulse –withstands alternating cold and heat
cycling.
■
Low Friction: Liquids maintain a steady flow
without clogging. Constant low pressure drop means
deposits can't accumulate on inside walls.
■ Moisture Resistant: Ideal for pneumatic systems requiring low dew point. No possibility of saturation or leakage.
POSITIVE
BRAID LOCK
■
Non-Contaminating: Will not contaminate the
material, fluid or gas conducted –Teflon is FDA approved for food products, pharmaceuticals, etc.
■ Steam Compatibility: Absorbs no moisture hot or cold
–rated for steam to 250 psi (400 oF)– has low volumetric
expansion characteristics, is easy to clean and sterilize.
■ Light Weight: Easier to move, handle, install than
rubber hose with a comparable burst pressure
rating. Ideal as pigtail in gas handling and pneumatic systems where dew point must be low.
Compare if
you dare!
■ Resists Deterioration: Impervious to weather
and can be stored for long periods without aging.
Will not age during service.
■ Unlimited Life: Unmeasurable life expectancy when applied
within its temperature and pressure ratings. Will not tear-up, eat-out,
burn-up or wear-out.
The ultimate
hose!
■ Non-Adhesive: Handles substances such as adhesives, asphalt, dyes,
grease, glue, latex, lacquers and paints. No carbon build up when used as a
compressor discharge line.
■ Non-Conductive: Excellent dielectric properties. Ideal hose core for applications
requiring electrical isolation.

"Sure-Seal"swaged end fitting
connection
Thorburn's exclusive "Sure Seal" coupling attachment method is based upon extensive development engineering. The Teflon innercore
and over braid are firmly locked between the
fitting collar and insert for a permanent, leakproof assembly. The positive braid lock assures that strain is absorbed by the braid, not
the Teflon hose.
Materials The "sure seal" couplings are available in stainless steel, brass, or a combination
of brass and carbon steel. The wetted surfaces
of stainless steel fittings are type 303, other
parts are type 304, unless specified (other
materials available upon request).

Teflon Lined Hose

✓ Full vacuum/500psi smooth bore
✓ Non-stick/non-contaminating teflon
The drawback found in using large diameter smooth tube
Teflon lined stainless steel braided hose assemblies was
its inability to stand up to rugged handling. These traditional assemblies would tend to kink when bent into tight
radii and the braid would tend to separate during handling,
exposing the operator to potentail dangerous failure.
tube
✓ Pinpricked cover for effusion
dissipation
To address this problem, Thorburn developed its TR40
which combines the traditional technology of a rubber chemical pressure hose with the superior properties of teflon.
The smooth teflon lined tube is reinforced with a combination of high tensile calendared synthetic fabric braid and
helical wires which are then shielded with a tough abrasive
chemical resistant cover. The hose is then vulcanized and
bonded into an integral unit. The end result provides for
greater handling, flexibility and abrasion resistancy.
Service temperrature
Continuous: -40°F. to 225°F.
Intermittent: -60°F. to 300°F.

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
Thorburn's TC72 transfer hose is an ideal
hose for transferring chemicals, food handling and various processing applications
from waste water to hazardous waste.
Typical uses include chemical loading and
unloading of trucks, tank cars and
process vehicles; batch bulk transfers and
decanting vessels and drums.
POSITIVE
BRAID LOCK
Thorburn's TC76 conductive transfer hose is extensively used in applications which have high flow rates
and require dissipation of a static charge, i.e. fuel handling, tire presses, laundry presses and other types
of steam service where on-off operating cycles cause wide temperature fluctuations inside the hose.
HOSE CONSTRUCTION
Convoluted innercore of 100% pure Teflon, externally reinforced with Teflon-impregnated fiberglass and type
304 stainless steel wire braid. Thorburn's TC76 hose has precisely controlled amount of carbon black added

WORLD’S MOST
ADVANCED HOSE
Thorburn introduces TC92 white and TC96
conductive static dissipating teflon lined
convoluted hose.
■ TC92 white PTFE 316SS
braid
OUTSTANDING ADVANTAGES:
✓ The new hose series is seamless, chemically
✓
✓
✓
✓
✓
■ TC96 conductive
PTFE 316SS braid
resistant, food and pharmaceutical compatible.
Solid, homogeneous extrusion, no tape
lamination.
Open pitch totally 100% cleanable helical
convoluted design.
Full vacuum ratings of 29.9 in of Hg. at 2 x
bend radius at 70°.
Uninterrupted flow free of areas where
corrosion or bacteria can start.
Extra thick for greater hoop strength, won’t
flatten when bent and crush resistant.
■ TC97 white PTFE
polypropylene braid
■
TC98 conductive PTFE
polypropylene braid
Thorburn unique features of TC92 & TC96 inner cores
thick tube design is its ability to be extended through the
fittings and flare over sealing fales— thus no exposed
sealing surfaces for greater relief from leaking, corrosion and bacteria startup.
Available with Polypropylene Braid
■ Fraying of braid won’t puncture handler’s hands.
■ Maximum abrasion and chemical resistance.

Before selecting a TFE hose for a particular steam
piping system, determine the maximum operating
temperature of the system. Locate that temperature
on the y-axis of the chart and draw a line parallel
to the x-axis until it intersects the curve. Beneath
the intersection locate on the x-axis the working
steam pressure of the system. Compare this value
to the recommended steam working pressures
shown in the TF46 hose data above.
Caution: Thorburn T46 TFE hose is not
recommended for steam piping applications
where steam pressures exceed 200 PSIG.

1. Cut hose to required length
after wrapping area to be cut with
a double layer of masking tape;
this is to prevent braid flare and
attendant assembly difficulties.
Tape is to remain in place until
IMMEDIATELY before sliding
sockets onto hose. CAUTION —
use a sharp TFE Hose cut-off
blade in a Stratoflex approved
Hose Cut-off machine only. Trim
loose wires and clean hose bore.
Discard hose if inner tube has
been kinked or collapsed or is
not cut square within ±6°. Remove tape and slide sockets onto
hose. Put the nipple in a vise and
push the hose onto the nipple.
Rotate hose to size the tube and
flare the braid. Remove hose from
nipple.
2. Push the insert onto the hose
between the inner tube and the braid.
Completely bottom the hose in the insert by pushing against a flat surface.
4. Tighten the nipple hex with the
proper wrench until there is a 1/32"
maximum gap beween the nipple
and socket hexes. To disassemble.
reverse the procedure.*
5. Clean the hose assembly using
varsol or other Thorburn approved
fluid. Blow the hose bore dry using
filtered air.
6. Proof test the hose assembly at
twice the recommended operating
pressure for 30 seconds minimum,
5 minutes maximum.
3. Push the insert and hose onto the
nipple until the insert bottoms against
the nipple chamfer. Lubricate the nipple and socket threads. Push the socket
forward and start the threads by hand.
50
*NOTE: During attachment of the fitting
onto the hose, the insert collapses inwardly compressing the TFE inner tube.
All components other than the insert are
considered reattachable unless visibly
damaged.

■
Corrosion resistance and non-stick properties of virgin unpigmented
Teflon
■
Proven convenience of Cam-Arm fittings
■
Pressure rated to 150 psi @ 250oF
■
Fittings are welded (not band-clamped) to eliminate any ledge and
possible source of contamination
■
All wetted surfaces of integral male or female fittings are Teflon
lined
■
Mating fittings (female coupler to flange or male adapter to flange)
can be supplied Teflon lined to maintain full system corrosion resistance
■
Teflon liner is available smooth-bore or convoluted for greater flexibility
■
Available in diameters through 6" I.D. in lengths to 15 ft.
■
One end can be supplied with standard 150 lbs. flange
■
Can be steam-cleaned; ideal for use in "cleaned-in-place" (C.I.P.)
applications
■
Chemflex hose assemblies will also mate to butt weld or threaded
male/female fittings
■
In event of damage to Teflon liner, Chemflex assemblies can be
relined at nominal charge
■
Chemflex hose is designed to pass cycling steam-cold water at 150
psi. This proves the integrity of the unique all-Teflon lined Cam-Arm
fitting; in addition, all finished assemblies are subjected to a 10000V
spark test prior to shipment

Thorburn Flexible Tefonpipe offers the flexibility and near universal
corrosion resistance of PTFE combined
with the high pressure ratings attainable
through the use of 321 stainless steel corrugated hose and overbraid. Flexible Tefonpipe
assemblies are used as pump connectors and as
transfer hose for the loading and unloading of process
reactors and vessels, storage tanks, trucks, tank cars, etc.
Provided with floating Van Stone flanges, Thorburn Flexible
Tefonpipe assemblies can be quickly connected ans disconnected. In
those cases where greater flexibility is required, hose assemblies can be

THOR-SIL cloth is a flexible refractory textile material
with excellent insulation characteristics for hightemperature applications.
Refractory silica in textile form insulation
THOR-SIL textiles are continuous filament, amorphous
silica products, with the thermal performance of a
refractory material. The fiber does not melt or vaporize
until temperatures exceed 3100 o F (1704 o C).
THOR-SIL textile cloth will operate continuously at
temperatures to 1800oF (982 oC) with little or no change
in properties. When temperatures are elevated beyond
1800 oF (982oC), some embrittlement occurs. However,
THOR-SIL cloth continues to provide thermal protection
to temperatures of 3100 oF (1704oC).
APPLICATIONS
■
Furnace curtains and welding protection cloth
■
Personnel shields
■
Pre-heat and weld stress retreiving thermal blankets
■
Many other applications where heat is a destroyer
THOR-SIL insulation withstands molten
steel at 2800oF
THOR-SIL wide woven tapes are proven for hose or
pipe wrap and stress relieving applications. They are
used to insulate hydraulic lines, coolant hoses and
motor leads and can be used in any application where
thermal insulation, energy savings, safety and electrical nonconductivity are important. THOR-SIL also protects machinery from extreme radiant heat and molten
metal splash, and it protects parts from contamination,
marking and damage during high-temperature processing
as well.

Saturated Fiberglass Sleeving
Unsaturated Ceramic Sleeving
TYPE SFS
TYPE UCS
Thorburn's UCS is an unusual sleeving braid of
ceramic fiber. It will tolerate continuous duty to
temperatures of 2600oF and performs well in short
term exposures to 3000oF. It protects wires, cables, hoses and tubing from long term high temperature exposure and from molten splash and
nearby flame. Thorburn UCS is available in nominal diameters from 1/16" through 4" and is natural
(of white) in color.
Thorburn's SFS braided sleeving is manufactured
of high quality fiberglass saturated with a synthetic rubber. It will tolerate continuous exposure
to temperatures as high as 1000oF. SFS is ideal
for protecting rollers, hoses, tools, tubing, wire
and cable from high heat or occasional exposure
to molten splash and nearby flame.

Thorburn's MTS4 series is an all purpose lightweight all metal high
pressure pipe/hose vacuum coupling designed for leakproof operation
as it cycles through a wide range of pressures and temperatures,
typical of autoclave environments. The design offers a non restrictive
flow with no variation in pipe diameter. The reusable sealing components are made of different metals having their own unique hardness
and thermal properties, so as to further enhance the seal as temperature changes are encountered. The safety ring ensures that the seal
is broken before disconnection, safely venting any residual pressure.

"O" Seal unions are recommended where piping
requirements dictate the necessity of having a flat face
seat to make and break the pipe line. They meet requirements where an O-ring, zero leakage, seal is
recommended.
Features
■
Turbulance-free fit across seats. Full bore I.D.
■
O-ring located in the threadpiece face, well out of the waterway bore providing added protection against abrasives and
erosion.
■
Combination end connections. Threaded, socketweld and
buttweld ends are all interchangeable, as well a one-step line
size changes.
■
3,000 psi W.O.G. Cold non-shock pressure rating is standard.
6,000 and 9,000 psi are also available.
■
Precision machined parts. Ends taper reamed before threading.
■
Resistance to vibration. Seals will not loosen, even under
extreme vibration or pressure surges.
■
No maintenance needed because once the seal is made it
never requires retightening.
■
Saves money and weight by eliminating unnecessary nipples,
brushings, couplings and inserts when initially designed into
the system.
■
Flat faced construction allows for slipping the component in
and out without disturbing the surrounding tube or pipe sections.
Design Standards
Unions are designed to comply with current industry standards for pressure piping. These standards include ANSI B 31.1 "Power Piping", ANSI B
16.11 "Forged Steel Fittings Socket Welded and
Threaded", and ASME "Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code".

Recessed "O" ring replaces conventional
flange gaskets providing a positive leak
proof seal
A four-cam coupler ready to be bolted to a standard pipe
flange. Note: recessed "O" ring and Thorburn camlock
wrench.
How to Make Tight, Leakproof Couplings in Seconds
First the Thorburn camlock coupling is
permanently installed by bolting it to a
standard ANSI flange. Couplings are
made to engage all 150 pound ANSI
flanges. 300 pound ANSI flange couplings are available. Once installed, the
coupling is ready to be joined to a matching
flange of the same diameter. Thorburn
camlock couplings are available in weld
neck, slip-on and screw neck versions.

The connection is positive and leakproof.
It is virtually impossible to loosen while
there is pressure in the line. Couplings
are corrosion resistant and hydrostatically
tested as leakproof at 450 psi. The coupling body is carbon steel; complete assembly is cadmium plated; cams are
410 stainless steel. "O" rings are BunaN; Butyl, Viton, Neoprene, Teflon or other
materials are available.
A matching ANSI flange is positioned
against the face of the coupling. The
open cams serve as guides making positioning easier. Cams may be swung
into place by hand before using the
Thorburn camlock wrench to tighten cams
and compress the recessed "O" ring.
Average time to secure an eight-inch
hose connection is less than one minute.
Breakaway time is even less.

To solve your worst, most demanding hose installation,
Thorburn's flexible piping division will provide a unique solution to highly
hazardous, costly problems that none of your other suppliers have
thought about.
Thorburn custom design problem
solving hoses for:
Thorburn's flexible piping assemblies are
serving a great variety of applications across
industry –from bakery ovens to basic oxygen furnaces– where unrestricted flow of
gas or fluids is critical, where the working
environment is exposed to heat, vibration,
tight bending and other problems that cannot be solved adequately or safely by allmetal hose, swivel joints or plain unarmoured
hose.
Steel production
Blast furnace
• Water cooling hose for stack plates, with
bronze ends
• Water hose for paner and door cooling
• Hydraulic hose for platform lift
• Hydraulic shear hose
• Basic oxygen furnace (BOF): conducting water and oxygen in the BOF.
Open hearth
Custom hose construction for the steel
making industry
• Furnace door hose
Hot mill
Depending on the type of service, the inner
hose is specially designed for the material to
be handled: steam, air, chemical, oxygen, hydraulic fluid, and other substances. These inner hoses are specially made to be armoured
in Thorburn's metal protective sheath.
• Armoured for 30" top and bottom mill spray
on stands
Cold mill
• Roll cooling on stands
Continuous casting, electric and open
hearth furnaces
The tube of the hose is specially compounded
to resist chemical action of the material being
handled.

Hydraulic hoses
Oil and lubrification hoses
Oxygen and acetylene hose for cutoff
burners
• 3/4" argon stirring hose
The carcass, which is the strength member of
the hose, can be textile or wire braid wire,
spiral wire or cable.
Layers of insulation between the protective
armour and the hose member protects the
entire assembly from external heat. Additional
layers provide further protection and different
types of insulation material are available to
meet special needs.
Other applications
• Sand blast hose in foundries to blast hot
pots
• Black liquor hose on black liquor recovery
boilers in pulp and paper mills
• Ammonia hose to prevent kinking in plant
use
• Steam hose in applications where vibration
is severe
• Choke and kill hose on oil drilling rigs
• Blowout preventor hose on off-shore drilling
rigs
Thorburn's metal protective armour is galvanized, stainless steel, aluminum, or bronze, as
specified. It offers resistance to external abuse
greater than all-metal hose, yet it remains
extremely flexible and resists kinking or collapse in tight loops, knots or bends.

Chlorine Market Digest
The chemical element, chlorine, has many organic and inorganic
derivations, which in turn have literally hundreds of end-uses:
polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, refrigerants, solvents, silicones,
food and drug additives and processing, perfumes, missiles, metal
processing –the list is endless.
In its "as is" state, chlorine is widely used in the pulp and paper
industry for bleaching paper, as well as in water purification.
Chlorine is one of the most difficult and hazardous chemicals to
handle. At ordinary temperatures chlorine is a gas with a greenish-yellow color and a sharp irritating odor. When the gas is
cooled at atmospheric pressure, it liquifies at about -30oF, forming
a clear amber liquid.
Liquid and gaseous chlorine can be either "dry" (sometimes called
anhydrous) or "wet" (sometimes called moist). Dry chlorine does
not contain any water. Wet chlorine, however, does contain some
water and it is this combination of chlorine and water which will
form hydrochloric and hypochlorous acids which are extremely
corrosive to all common metals such as Monel, stainless steel,
bronze and steel.
Typical chlorine unloading
Typically, the manufactured chlorine is loaded into railroad tank
cars and highway tank trucks at approximately -18oC (0oF) at
about 100 psi. Unloading at their end users at about the same
conditions.
Yes, We Have A Safe
Solution For Your
Chlorine Transfer
Each loading station usually employs from 1 to 3 loading hoses,
and one "sniffer" hose (to bleed off any vaporized chlorine), with
lengths varying from 6' to 12'. The most common length is 8'.
A common derivative of chlorine, anhydrous hydrochloric acid
(HCL), also poses a tough transfer problem. Loading is typically
done with one loading hose and one sniffer hose, with the service
conditions at about -57oC (-70oF) at 70 to 135 psi.

Composite and Laminating Industry Digest
Thorburn's autoclave hose assembly features:
In the composite and laminating industry, "vacuum bagging" refers to a process which covers or surrounds a
laminate with a flexible, sealed membrane (vacuum bag).
Vacuum bagging produces exceptionally strong, lightweight
parts with little, if any, air entrapment.
■
Rapid hook-up to product material tray/dolly
■
Hold internal full vacuum (29" Hg)
■
Withstand external positive pressure of 15 - 500 psi
■
Chamber temperature 400oF to 800oF or in cryogenic
to -300oF
Through ports installed in the bag, the air is removed from
around the laminate. This is accomplished with a vacuum
pump attached to vacuum hoses which are connected to
the ports via quick-disconnects. With the air removed, atmospheric pressure forces the bag down tight against the
laminate, similar to a vacuum-packed food item.
■
Not absorb moisture from adhesive vapour fumes
■
Flexible yet resist kinking when folded back along
chamber sides when not in use
■
Leak proof to assure finished product quality
For laminates cured at room temperature, this may be the
extent of the vacuum bagging process. Because many
laminates are manufactured using heat-activated (thermoset) or heat-formed (thermoplastic) resins, the vacuumbagged articles are cured in ovens or, when more pressure
is required, they are cured in autoclaves and mechanical
presses.
An autoclave, simply described, is a pressure vessel with
an access door, in which any of an infinite number of
variable non-ambient conditions including dry heat, gaseous pressure and/or vacuum can be brought to bear, individually or in combination, on a material to be treated in the
vessel to cause physical and chemical changes in the
material. Autoclaves are typically used for vulcanizing rubber products, curing plastics, and bonding metal, glass,
graphite, or other dissimilar materials into composites.

Market Introduction
Cryogenic
Flexible Piping
The compressed gas industry represents one of the largest and most
important markets in the world today. These gases are essential to
the success of many industries, including welding/cutting, metal production and fabrication, electrical and electronics, lighting, laser products,
aerospace, underwater diving, petroleum recovery, food and beverage refrigeration and the medical profession just to name a few.
Their manufacture, handling, transport, storage, transfer and packaging is of prime importance for the many markets and diverse applications they serve. Many of these compressed gases initially produced
at an air-separation plant, are handled, stored and transported as cold
liquids/cryogenic fluids– they are cooled down to liquid form and
stored in special insulated tanks thatr keep them below their boiling
points. Many of these cold liquids/cryogenic fluids, upon further transport are transfered into sub-station “holding tanks,” and converted
into a gaseous (non-liquefied) state and packed into small cylinders
for final end-use applications. These cylinders are of many different
sizes and styles, with various highly-controlled pressure ratings.
Shown above is a typical loading station metal hose assembly
with armour casing each end for added durability and safety.

ON!
Shown above is a typical Thorburn cryogenic
CGA hose assembly.
Shown above is a cargo tank truck at an air separation
plant using a metal hose assembly to load liquid cryogenic nitrogen at approximately -320° F. 150 psi.
Thorburn’s Experience
Thorburn’s contribution to this industry has been achieved largely through
its custom metallic, teflon lined hose assemblies, CGA adapters and fitting
assemblies. Thorburn’s products have been able to provide reliable timely
solutions at the air separation production plants for the loading of bulk liquid
cryogenic and non-cryogenic compressed gases into cargo trucks and rail/
tank cars for transport to other storage facilities and/or users. Off-loading of
their vehicles is also being readily handled by Thorburn’s metalic and teflon
lined hose assemblies which are normally carried on the vehicle.
Whether the compressed gas is oxygen for steel making nitrous oxide as
anesthesia for the medical profession, carbon dioxide for providing the
“pop’ in soft drinks, or liquid fuel propellants for the NASA rocket launches,
Thorburn metal and teflon hose assemblies are continuing to make major
contributions in the handling of the hazardous yet essential compressed
gases.

➂
At what temperature do you wish the hose to operate?
➂
What is the minimum ambient temperature expected?
■
The difference between the operating temperature and the minimum ambient temperature is
what the hose must be designed to produce.
■
This is achieved by a combination of power (watts per foot) and thermal insulation.
■
The thicker the thermal insulation, the less watts per foot required.
■
If the amount of power available is limited, you must have more thermal insulation.
■
If you need a hose with a small finished O.D., you must use more power.
➂
At what voltage would you prefer to operate the hose?
➂
What length would you like the hose to be?
■
➂
➂
Lengths up to 1000 feet are available, with one voltage input.
How do you plan to control the hose temperature?
■
For continuous operation, we recommend solid state control.
■
For periodic operation, electro-mechanical control is acceptable.
What pressure rating do you need at your expected
operating temperature?
