Mondays • 8pm Witness Beijing’s transformation in preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games with the TV series, Beijing, Are You Ready? D3 Productions’ proposal for this 13-episode program was officially approved by the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) in June 2006. The program includes rare footage of key people and highlyrestricted locations, including Olympic construction sites. In addition to looking behind-the-scenes of the Olympic grounds, viewers will experience the multitude of ways China’s capital city is preparing to host the first-ever Olympics in China. China’s Qian Zhen Hua: Not only a fencer…He is training to compete in the Pentathlon where, in addition to fencing, he will shoot, ride, run and swim. KBTC General Manager Debbie Emond KBTC Program Director Phil Kane Pope John Paul II A Saint for Our Times Sunday, July 13th • 6pm Pope John Paul II was one of the most widely traveled pontiffs in history. His trips to distant lands and his overtures to leaders of other faiths to make common cause in the quest for world peace endeared him to millions. When he died in 2005, the Vatican waived the five-year waiting period before considering beatification and moved almost immediately to “fast track” the process. JOHN PAUL II: A SAINT FOR OUR TIMES examines the life of Pope John Paul II through the process of his beatification, which is expected to be finalized this year, resulting in the first step to full canonization. The documentary examines the life of the late pontiff, beginning with his “baptism by fire” in war-torn Poland during World War II and continuing with his struggle for religious freedom in Communist Poland during the second half of the 20th century. 2 www.kbtc.org KBTC Membership Director Sherri Stanton CHOICE MAGAZINE is published by KBTC Public Television and is mailed to those supporting KBTC-TV at a membership level of $35 or more. Once they roamed the Earth in millions, numbering hundreds of species of all shapes and sizes, but today the rhinoceros is one of the planet’s rarest animals. They’ve been poached and slaughtered for the black-market value of their horns. Of the remaining five species — the black, white, Indian, Javan and Sumatran rhino — three are perilously close to extinction. NATURE goes on a global mission to film each species and the fascinating strategies used to protect them. Actor Daniel Stern narrates. Lord of the Ants Thursday, July 3rd • 8pm At age 78, E.O. Wilson is still going through his “little savage” phase of boyhood exploration of the natural world. NOVA profiles this soft-spoken Southerner and Professor Emeritus at Harvard, who is an acclaimed advocate for ants, biological diversity, and the controversial extension of Darwinian ideas to human society, on Lord of the Ants. Actor and environmentalist, Harrison Ford, narrates this engaging portrait of a ceaselessly active scientist and eloquent writer who has accumulated two Pulitzer Prizes among his many other honors. This is your program, and these are your stories. 10 www.kbtc.org Frontline: Jesus in China Thursday, July 24th • 9pm Austin City Limits: Blues Traveler As the world spotlight hits China this summer, reporter Evan Osnos goes inside one of the country’s most important, but least understood movements — China’s underground churches. A joint project of FRONTLINE/World and the Chicago Tribune, Jesus in China examines the wave of Christianity that has been sweeping across the country in recent years and the different ways the Chinese ruling party — officially atheist — is now racing to control it. Probing this volatile religious and political fault line, Osnos travels to the “Bethlehem of China” in Henan Province, gains access to unregistered “megachurches” in China’s fastest-growing cities and finds a number of Communist Party members and independent activists willing to come out publicly as Christians. Also, in this hour, two more “stories from a small planet,” including a look at how Rwanda, in recent years, has become an unlikely haven for a new breed of social entrepreneur taking the lead in rebuilding a devastated country. Saturday, July 5th • 9pm Blues Traveler has cultivated a unique sound highlighted by extended jams, harmonica hooks and John Popper’s distinctive voice. The Grammy winners perform songs from their CD, Bastardos. Since the late 80s, Cafe Tacuba has been building an international fan base through innovative experimentation with music. The Mexican quartet performs international hits from their CD, Cuatro Camino . Antiques Roadshow: Las Vegas, NV Tuesday, July 8th, 15th & 22nd • 8pm At ANTIQUES ROADSHOW in Las Vegas, Nevada, this woman flips through a scrapbook, inherited from her great-great-grandfather, featuring the signatures of some of the Civil War era’s greatest public figures, including Grant, Sherman, Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis and many others. This exceptional heirloom prompts appraiser Rafael Eledge of Shiloh Civil War Relics to assign an insurance value of $75,000 to $100,000. www.kbtc.org 11 Saturdays - July Time July 5 July 12 July 19 July 26 7:00 am 8:00 am The Victory Garden P.
