Nova: Sinking the Supership Thursday, Apr 19th • 8pm In April 1945, the largest battleship ever built set out on the ultimate suicide mission. With its crew of 3,000, Yamato, the pride of Japan’s fleet, sailed to a solo confrontation with the 1,500-strong United States Navy. Attacked by a swarm of U. S. dive bombers, the battleship sank within minutes. A NOVA team discovers the wreck and retells the Yamato’s extraordinary saga through the eyes of the few Japanese crewmembers who survived the sinking. State-of-theart CGI animation shows viewers what the colossal battleship was like in all its glory at the time of its launching. The program provides a dramatic perspective on the great age of battleships and why it ended so abruptly with the Yamato’s disastrous sinking. Dispensing with animation, MASTERPIECE THEATRE relies on the striking animal instincts of some very talented actors, which is only proper, since Grahame’s story features animals acting like people — like slightly barmy Edwardian-era gentlemen, to be exact. British comedian Matt Lucas (“Casanova”) stars as gadget-crazed Mr. Toad, the irresponsible scion of a great fortune that he squanders on boats, a caravan, motorcars and a snazzy wardrobe. Good To Great Monday, Apr 9th • 9pm What practices do the Dallas Police Department employ to make its city safer? Could these same principles be responsible for Southwest Airlines’ outperformance of American, United and Delta? Is curbing the high-school dropout rate in Arizona connected to Starbucks’ gamble in China — the land of a billion tea lovers? Based on the bestselling book by Jim Collins, GOOD TO GREAT investigates the keys to the enduring success of six business and social-sector organizations. Out of these stories emerges the answer to Collins’ five-year quest to uncover, “What makes good... great?” 10 www.kbtc.org Tuesdays • 7:30pm Nature: Unforgettable Elephants This month FULL FOCUS takes us underwater in the Puget Sound to look at the ecosystems that thrive there. By better understanding how dependant the sea life is on the smallest organisms, we better understand the need for greater conservation awareness. Other upcoming stories include a look at Mercer Slough, a 320-acre wetland nature park in the heart of urban Bellevue and how the “Friends of Rachel Club” at Puyallup High School is paying tribute to the first person killed at Columbine Highs School in 1999 by promoting the idea of treating people with kindness and compassion. FULL FOCUS airs every Tuesday at 7:30pm. Wednesday, Apr 11th • 8pm Program repeats during the month. For 25 years, NATURE has been the benchmark of natural history programs on television, capturing the splendors of the natural world, from the African plains to the Antarctic ice. UNFORGETTABLE ELEPHANTS Wildlife cameraman and elephant expert Martyn Colbeck shares his spectacular footage and unique insights about some unforgettable elephants, including his conviction that they are just as intelligent as the higher primates. Outreach events put KBTC in contact with over 70,000 people each year. Frontline: So Much So Fast Thursday, Apr 12th • 9pm FRONTLINE traces one family’s attempt to cure Lou Gehrig’s disease. What would you do if you were 29 years old and found out that you only had a few years to live? Stephen Heywood chose to get married, have a child and rebuild two houses while he was slowly losing control of his body’s movement from a crippling disease. In SO MUCH SO FAST, Academy Awardnominated directors Steven Ascher and Jeanne Jordan capture the remarkable events set in motion when Stephen Heywood discovers he has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. www.kbtc.org 11 Saturdays - April Time April 7 April 14 April 21 7:00 am The Victory Garden The Victory Garden The Victory Garden 7:30 am P. As I’ve said before, our goal here at KBTC is to be more than just another television channel. This special series is one more important way we’re working to engage the community and provide a forum for ideas, opinions and actions. In fact, we encourage you to watch the program and then share your thoughts and opinions with the global community by visiting our website, www.kbtc.org and clicking on “America at a Crossroads.” Submit your own video diary or just visit the site for more background information and an explanation of what’s going on, and how the national news fits into the broader picture. Debbie Emond Locally, we’re also exploring the issues of tolerance and compassion addressed by the series. Our FULL FOCUS team visits Puyallup High School to take a look at the “Friends of Rachel” club. A group of students and staff are honoring Rachel Scott, the first person killed in the Columbine High School shootings, by promoting her values of kindness and compassion. The club also works to eliminate prejudices and heighten the awareness of possible acts of violence at school. I hope you’ll find time to tune in to FULL FOCUS on Tuesday evenings at 7:30 or enjoy one of our many other great programs this month. Thank you for supporting KBTC and local public television. Sincerely, Debbie Emond Executive Dean and General Manager, KBTC & KCKA A Service of Bates Technical College KBTC Public Television provides a window to the world by using the power of the media to enrich lives through programs and services that educate, inspire and entertain.
