Mount St. Mary`s - Northeast Conference
Mount St. Mary’s
NEC Predicted Finish: 5th
Mountaineers
2009-10 Record: 16-15, 12-6 NEC
The Mount’s terrific five-year run has been based around a
suffocating defense effort. The Mountaineers have led the
NEC in scoring defense in each of the last two seasons and
have ranked no lower than third in the conference in the
category each year beginning in 2005-06.
Outlook
Over the last four years Mount St. Mary’s reached new heights in what
can aptly be termed the “Jeremy Goode Era.” The Mount had failed to
qualify for NEC Tournament play in four of the six years prior to his arrival,
then immediately became perennial contenders once the speedy point guard
hit the Knott Arena hardwood. The Mountaineers won the 2008 NEC title,
made consecutive postseason appearances in 2008 (NCAA) and 2009 (CIT),
and won 54 games over his final three seasons. And if filling the void left by
Goode’s graduation wasn’t enough, Milan Brown, the architect of the Mount basketball renaissance, also departed at year’s end to take over the Holy Cross program. Leading the wave of change in Emmitsburg is new head coach Robert Burke,
who comes to Mount St. Mary’s with 22 years of experience as an assistant, including
eight at national power Georgetown. While some key spots will be up for grabs - most
notably at the point - he takes over a roster that features a pair of battle-tested senior
leaders in Jean Cajou and Shawn Atupem, and a promising big man in sophomore Raven
Barber. Burke’s biggest challenge could be his daunting non-league schedule, one that
includes nine road games, including Dayton, Cincinnati, Penn State and Virginia Tech.
Shawn Atupem
A versatile 6’7” forward who can finish on the break and maneuver in the low post, Atupem
is the Mount’s top returning scorer after contributing 10.7 ppg a year ago. Atupem, who
moved into the starting lineup last season after coming off the bench as a key reserve in
each of his first two years, shot 51.1 percent from the field to rank fourth in the conference.
He was nearly impossible to defend down the stretch last season, sinking 72.9 percent of his
shot opportunities over the last seven games of the year while averaging 14.6 ppg. At one
point, he made 14 straight shots from the field over a three-game period, including an 8-8
performance against rival Robert Morris as the Mount pulled out a thrilling 63-61 win over
the Colonials to close out the regular season.

Frontcourt
The loss of Kelly Beidler, a solid all-around player and 1,000-point career scorer for the
Mount, will be felt, but there are plenty returning pieces up front. Shawn Atupem blossomed
as a junior after filling a sixth-man role his first two years on the club. The springy 6’7”
forward’s game has matured, and there are few in the league with his versatility, both as a
back-to-the-basket player and as a finisher in transition. Atupem averaged a career-best 10.7
ppg and hit 51.1 percent of his shots from the floor in 2009-10. The physically gifted Raven
Barber came on strong over the second half of his freshman season, and should be a mainstay
in the post for Burke over the next three years. At 6’8” and with an even longer wingspan,
Barber is able to play above the rim and score in traffic. He led the Mountaineers in field goal
shooting (.531), and averaged 5.0 ppg and 2.8 rpg. Seniors Tayvon Jackson and Pierre Brown,
along with junior Danny Thompson and sophomores Kristijan Krajina and Jacolby Wells, will also
compete for minutes in a deep frontcourt rotation. The 6’7” Jackson (2.8 ppg) is a hard worker
who ranked second on the team in rebounding (3.5 rpg) and blocks (31) despite playing just 18
minutes per contest. Brown (2.3 ppg), a 6’5” small forward, is one of the Mount’s top returning
three-point threats, having hit 44.4 percent of his shots from long range last season. Thompson
(1.8 ppg, 2.0 rpg), an athletic 6’7” lb. forward, battled injuries throughout the early part of his
career, but was able to contribute in spots last season. He blocked 18 shots in limited action.
Krajina (6’9”) started 10 games as a freshman and Wells (6’7”) adds even more size and depth.
Backcourt
Goode’s exit seemed to clear the way for Cajou to take over star billing in the Mount
backcourt and serve as mentor to the team’s youthful set of guards, but the Fairfax, VA
native’s status is in question this season and he will miss at least the first semester. The
cagey veteran has played 10 postseason games over the course of his career - the most
among active NEC competitors - and was named the NEC Tournament MVP as a freshman. While Cajou struggled a bit with his shot last season, he still managed to hit 38
three-pointers, and pitched in with 9.8 ppg and 4.0 rpg. Recognized as one of the
league’s top on-the-ball defenders, his closeout speed has helped the Mount routinely
shut down their opponent’s perimeter game. To wit, Mount St. Mary’s led the NEC in
defensive three-point field goal percentage (.306) a year ago. Junior Lamar Trice (1.9
ppg) served as a backup to Goode his first two seasons and could see more time in
2009-10. Combo guard David Golladay is set to debut after sitting out last season.
Newcomers
With 11 letterwinners returning, Burke’s initial recruiting class consisted of a
pair of guards and a small forward. Josh Castellanos, a 6’1” point guard,
could make an immediate impact after he was named the Florida 1A
Player of the Year after helping lead Orlando Christian Prep to its third
consecutive state title last season. With the departure of Will Holland, who hit a team-best 49 three-pointers in 2009-10, Burke may
turn to 6’2” sharpshooter Julian Norfleet as a long distance shooting option. Norfleet averaged 15.0 ppg last season for Landstown High School in Virginia Beach,VA. Evan Cleveland, a
multidimensional 6’6” forward from Fort Wayne, IN, was
a late addition to the roster. Cleveland helped lead
Elmhurst High School to the Indiana state semifinals and averaged 12.0 ppg.

Five To Remember
NEC 30th Anniversar
y: Signature Season
Anniversary:
Chris McGuthrie !! McGuthrie is the lone fourtime All-NEC honoree in league history. He ranks third
on the NEC’s all-time scoring list with 2,297 points and
led the conference with 22.3 ppg in 1995-96. That year,
McGuthrie was named NEC Player of the Year and led
the Mount to an upset of #21 Georgia Tech with a 37point performance. As a junior in 1994-95, he sparked
the Mountaineers to their first NEC championship.
McGuthrie also dished for 426 assists in his star-studded
career.
Gregory Harris !! The three-time NEC all-star may
have actually been underrated, if that’s possible. He is
one of two players in the history of the conference to
close out his career with 1,500 points, 500 rebounds and
500 assists. Harris tallied 1,760 points, 615 caroms and
529 assists. He was voted the 1999 NEC Tournament
MVP after taking the Mount to its second league crown.
Jeremy Goode !! Goode will go down as one of
the great NEC guards of the modern era. He wrapped
his career in 2010 as the league’s second all-time leading distributor with 603 assists. He also ranks 18th on
the conference scoring list with 1,716 points. Twice
named to the All-NEC first team and the centerpiece of
the Mount’s 2007-08 league championship team, the
lightning quick Goode is one of seven players in conference annals with 1,500+ points and 500+ assists.
Kevin Booth !! Booth was twice selected to the
All-NEC second team. He rolled up 1,742 points from
1989-93 and ranks 15th on the NEC’s all-time scoring
list.
Riley Inge !! Inge piled up big numbers for the
Mount in his three years from 1993-96. He tallied 1,285
points and 466 assists as the Mount reached the NCAA
Tournament in 1995 and the NIT in 1996. Inge was a
two-time NEC all-star, including first team billing as a
senior in 1995-96.
1995-96 !! In his 41st year as head coach at Mount St. Mary’s, Jim Phelan earned his
first Division I NCAA Tournament appearance following a 69-62 win over host Rider in the
NEC title game. The Mount trailed by 13 points at the break, but rode the hot shooting of
Tournament MVP Silus Cheung - who hit 5-6 from three-point range and scored 19 points in
the second half - to the win over the top-seeded and two-time defending champion Broncs.
The Mountaineers featured a potent offensive attack in 1994-95, led by junior Chris McGuthrie (pictured), who averaged 19.7 ppg.

Mount St. Mary’s
In his first year at the helm, Robert Burke will have to contend with a meaty non-conference schedule with five games
against teams that reached the NCAA or Postseason NIT a
year ago. Mount St. Mary’s opens with games at Dayton
(NIT) and Cincinnati (NIT) as part of the Global Sports
Main Event Tournament. The Mount also plays back-toback-to-back games over the holidays at Northwestern
(NIT), Vermont (NCAA) and Virginia Tech (NIT).

Mount St. Mary’s won NEC titles and advanced to the NCAA
Tournament in both 1995 and 1999 under legendary coach
Jim Phelan. In 1999, the Mount became the lowest seeded
team (#6) to win the conference tournament - a record that
still stands - and was the only team in league history to win
the NEC championship without having both a winning overall and conference record prior to entering the postseason.
