frequently
asked
questions
what should i wear?
Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for all shore
excursions. When you visit places of worship, we recommend
dressing conservatively (no shorts or sleeveless tops), but casual
clothing is perfectly acceptable. Dress in layers and have a jacket
along. Bring an umbrella or raincoat, a hat and sunscreen.
what about meals?
Most tour departures complement the ship’s meal service hours.
In-room dining is available on board.
how will i know what time each tour departs?
The on-board Shore Excursions Order Form in your stateroom
will show departure times. This information will also be printed
on your shore excursion tickets, which you will receive on board.
Approximate tour departure times are posted on our website at
www.hollandamerica.com.
i have a disability. how do i know which tours will best suit
me? will i have a problem (dis)embarking the ship?
Guests with disabilities should inquire in advance whether a
shore excursion will be able to accommodate their needs. We
have graded the Shore Excursions according to the relative level
of activity they entail. The walking icons that appear at
the beginning of each tour description provide a general idea of
the level of activity to expect. Please refer to the “How to Choose
Your Tours” section in this brochure for specific information
on the walking icons. It is important to keep in mind that shore
excursion operators are subject to the laws of their own country
including with respect to accommodating the needs of guests
with disabilities. In most foreign countries, the laws are not as
stringent as those in the United States. Please speak with the
Shore Excursions Office as to whether you can expect to encounter difficulties (dis)embarking the ship in a particular port of call.
In this regard, the decision whether or not to carry or provide
other mobility assistance to a guest and their mobility assistance
device (wheelchair, walker, etc.) up or down a ship’s gangway,
or on or off a tender boat, is at the sole discretion of the Captain,
made based on his evaluation of guest and crew safety.
We encourage you to bring a collapsible wheelchair as space
limitations may restrict the ability of some tour operators to
accommodate motorized mobility aid devices.
i am traveling with friends and we would like to be on the
same motor coach
The departure location for each shore excursion is printed on
your shore excursion tickets. If you wish to travel with friends,
please arrive at the designated meeting place together. This will
enable the staff to allocate space for you on the same vehicle.
tour durations
The individual tour descriptions include approximate durations. To allow our Shore Excursions Managers flexibility
to coordinate your time in port with meals and activities on
the ship, exact departure times are published in the Shore
Excursions Order Form on board. For more information, please
attend the Shore Excursions Presentation or visit the Shore
Excursions Office.
tour descriptions
Tour descriptions may change after printing. Information that
becomes available after this brochure is published will be posted in
the Shore Excursions section of our website, which can be found
online at www.hollandamerica.com. Significant changes will be
noted on the Shore Excursions Order Form on board. Tour
schedules are subject to change.

than one tour
in each port
Make the most of your time in each port by combining different
half-day tours to complete a full day of sightseeing. You might
want to consider a morning cooking class with an afternoon
walking tour; a morning stroll through a mosaic-lined church
and an afternoon of sampling local wine at a vineyard; or even
a bike ride and an evening cultural performance—all in one
day! Whatever your interests, and whichever pace suits you best,
there’s a huge variety of tours to mix and match in this brochure.
To make combining easy, for tour departure times and
durations, visit our website at www.hollandamerica.com.

how to
choose
your tours
Choose your shore excursions by using these icons as a
general guide to the level of activity involved, and select the
shore excursions best suited to your physical capabilities.

distances to walk; may include some steps.
moderate activity: Requires intermittent effort
throughout, including walking medium distances
over uneven surfaces and/or steps.

walking long distances over uneven and steep terrain or
on steps. In certain instances, paddling or other nonwalking activity is required and guests must be able to
participate without discomfort or difficulty breathing.

general information for booking online
At the time of making your reservations online, we will advise
you whether or not your reservations are confirmed or whether
you have been waitlisted. Your credit card will be charged
immediately for all confirmed reservations. Should space
become available for a waitlisted shore excursion request, we
will e-mail or otherwise contact you at that time and either
immediately charge your credit card if you have already given us
your credit card information or ask you to provide us with that
information for immediate charge processing. Shore excursion
reservations are subject to cancellation by us at any time prior
to the credit card charge being accepted by your bank. If you or
Holland America cancel a tour more than 53 days prior to cruise
departure, we will issue a credit on the credit card that you used
to pay for the reservation. For any cancellation within 53 days of
departure, a credit will not be given on your credit card. Instead,
we will apply an ONBOARD CREDIT ONLY policy under
which the refund (less any cancellation fee) will show up as a
credit to the shipboard account of the person who was to take
the shore excursion. If the credit is not fully utilized during the
cruise, the balance will be paid to that guest by the ship’s Purser.
slower pace, these excursions offer sightseeing mainly
from the transportation vehicle, with few or no stops,
and no mandatory disembarkation during the tour. As
vehicles outside the USA are rarely lift-equipped and
ramps are seldom available, a very small amount of
walking will be necessary. The pace will be gentle and
taking your time is encouraged.
limited capacity: The number of people able to
participate in this tour is strictly limited. Reasons for
limiting capacity may include the number of transportation seats available, or to maintain a safe ratio of
guides for hikes, fishing and water activities. Tours
require a minimum number of participants to operate.
meal: This tour includes a meal—lunch on daytime
tours, or dinner on evening tours.
snack: This tour includes a small snack or tasting
of local specialties. The snack is not a meal.

What fascinates you? A cooking class with a local
chef? A private car, complete with driver and guide,
so you can explore near or far? A chance to encounter wildlife or view natural wonders up close?
The Collections of Holland America Line represent
a small subset of the shore excursions you will find
in this brochure. Each collection offers its own
particular focus and is available only in select ports.
the collections
of Holland
America Line
Medallion Collection
A series of exclusive experiences designed to
accommodate our most discerning guests, our
Medallion Collection tours are each carefully
chosen to provide an in-depth perspective. They
offer unparalleled access to events and sights not normally readily
available. First-class style, smaller groups, multi-day Overland
Adventures—elite activities for a privileged few.
Encore Collection
Been there, done that? Think again. Our Encore
Collection, designed especially for repeat guests,
lets you discover what lies beyond the wellknown attractions you’ve already seen. Barbecue
with Argentine gauchos, bike the tree-lined boulevards of
Barcelona, ride an Icelandic pony across a windswept beach near
Reykjavik. These tours showcase hidden gems, unusual angles
and inside stories that will bring you back time and again.
World Wonders Collection
Natural treasures, architectural marvels,
technical wonders: to the Seven Wonders of
the World we add our own nominations based
on decades of leadership in global travel—the
sandstone city of Petra, the moai statues of Easter Island, and the
Great Wall of China, among others. What they have in common
is the ability to inspire awe.
Cruise with Purpose Collection
For every global citizen who has ever dreamed
of either giving back or paying it forward, the
innovative Cruise with Purpose Collection is quite
simply about improving our planet one voyage at
a time. Assist in scientific research, bring much-needed supplies to
an orphanage, participate in a fair trade scheme or cultural
exchange, replant native forest or restore fragile habitat—your
footprint will be light and your soul enriched.
Signature Collection
This exclusive touring option for independentminded travelers lets you completely customize
and maximize your time ashore by reserving
private transportation (along with an Englishspeaking driver and guide) in advance. Whether you travel by car
or minivan, customized boat, classic floatplane or stretch SUV
limousine, you choose the companions, sights and pace that
perfectly suit you.
to whom is the signature collection suited? The Signature
Collection is for solo travelers, couples, families, friends and
special interest groups traveling together. This may also be an
excellent choice for non-ambulatory guests. Value and flexibility
are just two of the advantages of first-class touring and luxury
transportation. Privacy, comfort, safety, and personalized guide
service are also yours to enjoy.
about the transportation: Each type of transportation will
be of the highest grade available in that port. Not all modes of
transportation are available in all locations. For information
about the transportation sizes and availability, please see our
website at www.hollandamerica.com.
pricing: The cost of each type of transportation will be published
online at www.hollandamerica.com.
also included: The cost includes the service of a driver and English-
speaking guide, unlimited mileage, road tolls, parking fees and
bottled water.
not included (unless otherwise noted): Guests’ entrance fees
for attractions are not included in the price due to the wide range
of attraction possibilities, uncertain number of attractions to be
visited, and varying number of guests participating. We strongly
recommend that you bring some local currency to cover such
costs as credit cards are not readily accepted in some ports. Lunch
will not be included on any tour as many guests prefer to select
their own dining venue.
itinerary planning: If you need help planning your personal
itinerary, the Port Lecturer and/or Shore Excursions Manager
can assist you and will gladly answer your questions. This can
be very helpful in many destinations where travel time, location,
holidays, and opening hours of attractions need to be taken into
consideration in order to maximize the efficiency of your time
ashore.
online reservations: The fastest and easiest way for you to
reserve and pay for your Signature Collection experience is
on the Holland America Line website. Visit us online at www.
hollandamerica.com. Please note the cost will be per mode of
transportation (not per person), so only one person in the party
needs to make the reservation. The price shown on the website
is the total cost for the transportation, driver and guide (not a
per-person price). In many ports, availability is extremely limited.
Please reserve as early as possible.
payment & tour vouchers: Your credit card will be charged
after your reservation is confirmed. Next, start planning what
you’ll do with your Signature Collection experience in each port.
On board the ship, you will be given a form to advise the Shore
Excursions Office of the itinerary you have chosen.
booking on board: The Signature Collection may be available for
booking once you are on the ship, but this cannot be guaranteed.
Please check with the Shore Excursions Office on board.
disembarking the ship: In some disembarkation ports, a private
vehicle and guide can be used for sightseeing en route to the
airport. When booking, please advise the total amount of luggage
for your party. Size of vehicle and luggage space may limit the
number of guests in the vehicle.

elegantly as Milton did—"Athens, the eye of
Greece, mother of arts and eloquence." Your

Parthenon—dedicated to Athena, the patron
goddess of Athens. Walking up a winding
path towards the Acropolis, you will pass

Volos, Greece - Monday, November 11, 2013:
Meteora Monasteries
Departs: 8:20 AM
Approximately 7½ Hours
Adult $149.95; Child $99.95
Set out from Volos heading northwest across
the fertile plain of Thessaly to Larissa, capital
of the province. This is the country of the
Centaurs and the site of the battle of
Pharsalla, where Julius Caesar defeated
Pompey the Great. Turning westward, you’ll
pass through Trikala in the very center of
Greece, en route to the town of Kalambaka.
Towering above the plain are the unique and
phenomenal meteora (meaning "in midair")—vast granite rocks soaring up hundreds
of feet in height, most of which are crowned
with 600-year old monasteries. This is a
fantastic and unforgettable sight. Here on
these pinnacles of rock, medieval monks took
refuge from plundering bandits—their
communities formed on the lines of the Holy
Mountain of Athos. Of the original 24
monasteries, only six are now inhabited, two
of which have become convents. Your visit to
the monastery of Agios Stephanos (now run
by an order of nuns) is relatively easy to
negotiate, while the approach to the Varlaam
Monastery requires climbing a considerable
number of steps but is well worth the climb.
The monastic buildings are of considerable
interest and the view over the other
monasteries towards the lofty Pindus range in
the distance is stupendous.
Please note: Modest attire is required; knees,
shoulders and midriffs must be covered.
Depending on day of excursion, different
monasteries may be visited.

Istanbul City Walls & Spice
Bazaar
Departs: 4:30 PM
Approximately 3 Hours
Adult $54.95; Child $24.95
Tour through Old Istanbul, crossing the
Galata Bridge. Your guide will point out the
Suleymaniye Mosque, one of the most
important mosques of the Ottoman Empire,
before you drive along the city walls
surrounding the ancient city. You will also
pass under the age-old Roman aqueduct on
your way to the Spice Market. The Spice
Market or Egyptian Bazaar was constructed
in 1663 as a part of the adjacent Yeni Mosque
complex, in order to generate funds for the
upkeep of the mosque. This was an avantgarde concept at the time—light years ahead
of the not-for-profit fundraising game. The
Spice Market is the best place to purchase
spices familiar and exotic, whose pungent
aromas bear little resemblance to the
supermarket variety, as well as fresh Turkish
Delight, caviar and a fascinating array of teas
before you return to the port.
Please note: Expect dense traffic conditions in
Istanbul.

zoals het al eeuwen gebeurt. Hierna bezoeken

prachtige binnentuinen, paviljoenen,
moskeeën, fonteinen en een rijke Schattenafdeling. De Harem was het huis van de
Sultan en geeft ons een buitengewoon beeld
van hoe de heersers toen leefden. We
Justinian in 537AD.
Christendom. Na vele veroveringen en
plunderingen, werd het gebouw tot moskee
omgebouwd, maar raakte door de eeuwen
heen in verval. In de twintigste eeuw werden
de prachtige mozaïeken opnieuw blootgelegd
en de kerk werd een Byzantijns-Ottomaans
museum.

Dikili, Turkey - Thursday, November 14, 2013:
Best of Pergamum
Departs: 9:30 AM
Approximately 6½ Hours
Price $209.95
Explore two cities—one ancient and one
modern—whose histories are inextricably
intertwined. They are located just 45 minutes
from Dikili and the drive takes you through
beautiful countryside. The first is the ancient
city of Pergamum, which once ranked among
the great cities of Asia. Pergamum was first
settled by the Aeolic Greeks in the 8th
century BC. Leaving your motor coach, you
will visit the Acropolis of Pergamum, situated
on a hillside 900 feet above the modern town
of Bergama. The Old Town was once
surrounded by three walls and had many
public and private buildings including
temples and palaces, but there are very few
traces of the walls today. Nestled among the
many ruins you will find those of the Library
of Pergamum, built by Eumenes II—second
only to the magnificent library in Alexandria,
Egypt. Because of the great library, many
scholars and teachers lived in this cultural
city—in fact, parchment paper was invented
here. Continue to the adjacent Temple of
Trajan, built by Hadrian and now partially
reconstructed. The temple was built of
marble over the top of Greek ruins. The Zeus
Altar—arguably the finest altar ever
built—dates back to 180 BC. You will see its
ruins, but most of the structure and its friezes
are now housed at the Pergamum Museum in
Berlin. Pergamum’s best-known landmark is
the Kizil Avlu (Red Basilica)—a temple made
of red brick and dedicated to the gods of
Egypt. The temple lies below the acropolis in
what is now the modern town of Bergama.
The temple’s two pools in the temple indicate
that ritual cleansing rites were performed
here—part of a religious background that was
neither Greek nor Roman. Pergamum was
one of the Seven Churches of Asia Minor
addressed by St John in the Book of
Revelation—he referred to this city as the
Throne of the Devil. Your next visit will be to
the ancient healing center of Asclepion, a 15minute drive from Pergamum. The complex
here was built to honor the god of
medicine—Asclepio. Asclepion enjoyed its
peak in the Roman period. A delicious open
buffet lunch will be served at a local
restaurant, and after lunch you will visit the
stunning Bergama Museum housed in a
modern building in the heart of the city. You
will have 45 minutes here to explore this
excellent facility, which contains more than
10,000 archaeological and ethnographic
works.
Pergamum Acropolis, Red
Basilica, & Asclepion
Departs: 9:30 AM
Approximately 4½ Hours
Price $139.95
Just a 45-minute drive from Dikili, the
ancient city of Pergamum awaits you.
Leaving the port, you will drive northwards
through beautiful countryside to reach it.
Pergamum once ranked among the great
cities of Asia. It was first settled by the Aeolic
Greeks in the 8th century BC and rose to
great prominence after the death of
Alexander the Great in 323 BC. Leaving your
motor coach, you will visit the Acropolis of
Pergamum, which looms 900 feet above the
new town. It was once surrounded by three
walls and had many public and private
buildings including temples and palaces, but
there are very few traces of the walls today.
Next you will visit the ruins of Library of
Pergamum, built by Eumenes II—second
only to the magnificent library in Alexandria,
Egypt. Because of the great library, many
scholars and teachers lived in this cultural
city—in fact, parchment paper was invented
here. Continue to the partially reconstructed
Temple of Trajan, built by Hadrian. Both
emperors worshiped here. The temple was
built of marble, probably on the site of a
ruined Hellenistic building. The Zeus
Altar—arguably the finest altar ever
built—dates back to 180 BC. It was
freestanding in the sense that it was not
associated with a temple, and you will see its
remnants, but the structure itself and its
friezes are now housed at the Pergamum
Museum in Berlin. Undoubtedly Pergamum’s
best-known landmark is the Kizil Avlu (Red
Basilica)—a temple made of red brick and
dedicated to the gods of Egypt. The temple
lies in what is now the modern town of
Bergama. The two pools in the temple
indicate that ritual cleansing rites were
performed here—part of a religious
background that was neither Greek nor
Roman. Pergamum was one of the Seven
Churches of Asia Minor addressed by St John
in the Book of Revelation. John was
unimpressed by Pergamum and searingly
referred to the city as the Throne of the Devil.
Your next visit will be to the ancient healing
center of Asclepion, a 15-minute drive from
Pergamum. The complex here was built to
honor the god of medicine—Asclepio.
Asclepion enjoyed its peak in the Roman
period. You will have an hour to explore, and
at the end of your tour, you will journey 30
minutes back to the port of Dikili.
The Bergama Museum & the Red
Basilica
Departs: 9:45 AM
Approximately 3 Hours
Price $99.95
Cotton fields and olive trees line the route
from the port at Dikili to Bergama—the
modern-day city that is a spin-off of old
Pergamum. The drive takes approximately 45
minutes, and you’ll take a quick orientation
tour upon arrival; then you will visit the
impressive Bergama Museum. The facility
houses more than 10,000 archaeological and
ethnographic works. The archaeological
artifacts belong to the Bronze, Archaic,
Classic, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine
eras. The ethnographic exhibits consist of
Ottoman relics and articles from the Bergama
region. Your next stop is at the largest
structure and best-known attraction in the
town—the Kizil Avlu (Red Basilica), which
lies in the middle of modern Bergama. This
enormous temple dates back to the 2nd
century BC and is made of red brick. It was
dedicated to the gods of Egypt, Serapis, Isis
and Harpocrates. You will have a chance to
take some photos during your brief stop here.
The two pools in the temple are symbols of
ritual cleansing rites—this comes from a
religious background that was neither Greek
nor Roman. At the end of your tour, journey
45 minutes back to the port of Dikili.

Turkish-Greek culture, and stroll through the
streets to see its beautiful, typical Greek
houses. You will have time to purchase some
handicrafts, sold by the ladies of the village
ladies at street stalls. Enjoy a short stop to

famous for its grape and other fruit wines,
and features a charming church dedicated to
St John. Lunch is served in a Turkish

last years of her life. The site called the Virgin
Mary’s House has been officially declared a
Catholic shrine and was visited by Pope Paul
VI in 1967, Pope John Paul II in 1979, and
Pope Benedict XVI in 2006. Next, continue to
Ephesus for a visit to the Great Theatre,
which dates back to the Hellenistic period. In
the 1st century AD, the theatre was
reconstructed and expanded by the Romans
to a seating capacity of 25,000. This is also the
place where St. Paul preached to the
Ephesians. It is still used for performances
today, and the acoustics are excellent. The
Marble Road, which runs between the
theatre and the Celsus Library, is part of a
sacred walkway that you will take to reach the
Celsus Library and Hadrian’s Temple. The
temple was dedicated in AD 118 to Hadrian,
Artemis and the people of Ephesus. This
impressive Corinthian-style temple has
beautiful reliefs on the porch, and the
Ephesians believed that the Medusa head on
the porch would protect the city from its
enemies. Return to Kusadasi to enjoy the
traditional Turkish experience of sipping
apple tea while watching a myriad of colors
unfold before your eyes during a carpet
demonstration. Those interested in

Approximately 4 Hours
Adult $84.95; Child $59.95

of Apollo
Departs: 8:00 AM
Approximately 5½ Hours
Adult $74.95; Child $39.95
Your day will begin with a visit to
Miletus—the oldest and the most powerful of
the twelve Ionian cities in Asia Minor. The
significant claim to fame made by Miletus is
that it was the first city to which the
principles of modern town planning were
applied. The grid plan, introduced by
Hippodamos, was later to form the basis of
town planning in all Roman cities. You will
see the ruins of the theatre, thermal baths and
the stadium here. Visit the newly opened
Archaeological Museum at Miletus and see
the wonderful artifacts representing the many
ancient sites of the area. Then, travel via the
Sacred Way—an ancient road once flanked
by lions, sphinxes and statues of priests—to
Didyma to view the amazing Temple of
Apollo. This majestic temple is one of the
great monuments of antiquity; it was built in
560 BC. Snacks and refreshments will be
enjoyed en route on the motor coach. At the
end of the tour, stay in Kusadasi to shop,
attend a Turkish carpet demonstration or
return directly to the ship.
Please note: The use of an audio headset
(included) will enhance your tour experience.

locations of the Great Theatre of Ephesus,
before you enjoy a panoramic drive from
Ephesus Upper Gate to the Isa Bey Mosque
via St.John's Basilica and Selcuk Castle . The
Isabey Mosque was constructed in 1374-1375
and you will view the beautiful courtyard. It is
one of the oldest and most impressive works
of architecture still remaining from the
Anatolian beyliks .Next you will see the ruins
of the Temple of Artemis, once a Greek
temple dedicated to a goddess Greeks
identified as Artemis and one of the Seven
Wonders of the Ancient World. It was
completely rebuilt three times before its
eventual destruction in 401. Only
foundations and sculptural fragments of the
latest of the temples at the site remain. Light
refreshments will be served at a local weaving
village before returning to the ship.

Alanya, Turkey - Sunday, November 17, 2013:
Alanya Museum & Red Tower
Departs: 9:00 AM
Approximately 3½ Hours
Adult $69.95; Child $49.95
Visit Alanya Castle—an iconic landmark of
this region. Built in the 13th century, it boasts
four miles of walls, 93 towers, 140
battlements and 400 cisterns. The fortress you
see today is little changed since its
construction and offers spectacular views
over the town of Alanya from an elevation of
820 feet. Proceed to the Alanya Museum,
which is divided into two
sections—ethnographical and archeological.
The museum displays the most important
and best-preserved discoveries from the
whole Alanya region and the collection
expands each year as new objects from
different excavations are recovered. The
oldest work displayed in this museum is an
inscription in the ancient Phoenician
language, dating back to 625 BC. Numerous
artifacts from the Classical, Roman,
Byzantine, Seljuk, Ottoman and Republican
Periods are exhibited in the archeology
section. The ethnography section includes
Turkish Islamic works of art and traditional
belongings, guns, handicrafts, jewels, and
pots and pans collected from the environs of
Alanya. Leaving the museum you’ll continue
on a brief panoramic tour of Alanya before
reaching the impressive octagonal Red
Tower. The tower is one of the finest
examples of medieval military architecture,
built at the beginning of the Seljuk Period to
protect the marina. Continue on foot to
Alanya’s ancient dockyard, which was once
the Seljuk’s Mediterranean naval base. From
here, it is an easy walk back to the ship. You
may choose to return directly or spend some
free time exploring the town.
Please note: This is primarily a walking tour,
involving some steps which have been worn
smooth with time and can therefore be

Founded on a hilltop near the Eurymedon
River, Aspendos was a major port city during
the rule of the Roman Empire. To date, only
the Roman theatre (built in the 2nd century
AD) has been excavated—however, it is
considered to be the best-preserved example
in the entire Mediterranean. A scenic drive
then leads you to nearby Side, a seaside
village where Marc Antony and Cleopatra
once visited during their romantic saga.
You'll walk through the broad, colonnaded
streets lined with ancient buildings to a
central marketplace, where pirates once
unloaded and sold their cargo. Passing
through the market, admire Side's 15,000-seat
arena, also built in the 2nd century AD.
Legendary gladiator matches took place here
in Roman times, but it was converted into an
open-air church in the 5th century. Three
temples lie on the fringe of the theater—one
to Dionysus, the god of wine, and two others
dedicated to Apollo and Artemis. Side's

Drive through Phassouri citrus groves and
vineyards to the ancient city of Kourion, a
beautiful and unspoiled spot perched high on
a cliff. Take in the dazzling views of the ruins
and the sea below. Kourion, one of the
ancient kingdoms of Cyprus, is situated in a
conspicuous topographic position. It is built
on a rise with three steep, almost vertical,
sides. In his writings, Herodotus referred to
the widely accepted notion that Greeks from
Argos founded Kourion. During the 4th
century AD, Kourion was destroyed by
earthquakes. To the south of the complex, a
theatrical natural hollow hosted a GrecoRoman theatre with a capacity of about 3,500
spectators. Archaeological and architectural
data testify that the original theatre of
Kourion was Hellenistic, small in size, dating
back to the second century BC. Adjacent to
the theatre are the remains of the House of
Eustolios, consisting of as many as thirty
rooms—including a bathing
complex—dating from the 4th to the middle
of the 7th century AD. The floors of the
porticoes are paved with beautiful mosaic
compositions depicting fish, birds and a
partridge, with Greek inscriptions. After
exploring the site, you’ll stop at Kolossi
Castle, built in the 13th century. Your guide
will tell you how it served both as the Grand
Command post of the Knights of Order of St
John (Jerusalem) and also of the Knights
Templar. Buses will depart from the castle
and head to the old shopping district of
Limassol where you’ll have a chance to shop
for local and international merchandise,
including jewelry, leather goods, souvenirs,
clothing and local artifacts.
Kourion Theatre, the Temple of
Apollo & Omodos Village
Departs: 8:15 AM
5 Hours
Price $69.95
Enjoy a relaxing drive through the vineyards
and orchards of the Phassouri citrus groves.
The day begins with a visit to the main
historical attraction of this area—the ancient
ruins of the city of Kourion. This impressive
Greco-Roman site features remnants of
pavement mosaics, including the fine fourpanel design in the central room at the House
of Eustolios. Nearby, is the superb GrecoRoman theatre built in the 2nd century BC,
still used today for many performances
including ancient dramas. From this beautiful
and unspoiled spot perched high on a cliff,
you can enjoy the dazzling view of the ruins
and the sea below. Your next stop is at the
Temple of Apollo. Apollo was a significant
deity of ancient Greek religion. He was the
god of light, sun, poetry, music and
woodlands, as well as the protector of the city
of Kourion. The Sanctuary of Apollo is the
largest and perhaps the most important
religious center on Cyprus. It has been in use
continuously from the late 8th century BC to
the second half of the 4th century AD. The
southwest side of the temple has been
restored and excavations have revealed other
structures, such as the bath complex, the
pilgrim halls, the palaistra and a holy
precinct. Next, your drive takes you to one of
the most beautiful old villages of Cyprus,
Omodos Village. Explore the Monastery of
the Holy Cross with its excellent
woodcarvings and old icons. You’ll also see
the restored Linos wine press in an old house.
Step inside the local houses to feel the ageold tradition that seems to ooze from the
walls, and stroll through the narrow streets
and local shops famous for their vitraux and
handmade pieces of traditional stained glass.
Spend some time in the village square to
enjoy the serenity of the surroundings.

Khirokita Archaeological Site
Departs: 8:15 AM

Price $74.95
The last divided capital city in the world, after
the fall of Berlin Wall, is the city of Nicosia
right here in Cyprus. The Green Line has
divided north from south since 1974. Nicosia
is the largest town on Cyprus and has been
the capital of the island since medieval times
(11th century AD). The history of the city is
interesting and adventurous and the place
itself is of great character, circled by old city
walls and criss-crossed by winding streets.
Your first stop on the way to Nicosia is at the
Neolithic archaeological site of Khirokitia
(7000 BC). This UNESCO World Heritage
Site is the best preserved of its kind in the
Eastern Mediterranean. Five dwellings in
close proximity have been reconstructed
following the Neolithic model, using the
traditional methods and materials. They have
been furnished with copies of objects actually
found inside the houses during excavation,
offering a terrific impression of the layout
and lifestyle of the village as it was in
antiquity. Driving through some typical

embellishing the walls, depicting colorful

where you will have the opportunity to view
the Turkish half of Nicosia and northern
territory of Cyprus. You’ll pass through the
impressive Venetian Walls that encircle the
old city via the Pafos Gate. Arrive in the old
town of Nicosia where there is free time for

Pafos & the Mosaics of Dionysos
Departs: 8:30 AM
Approximately 5 Hours
Price $74.95
Travel through Phassouri’s citrus groves and
vineyards to reach Petra tou Romiou—the
symbol of Pafos city. Legend claims that this
is where the goddess of Cyprus, Aphrodite,
was born out the foam of the sea and was
carried by the waves to Pafos—the sacred
place where Aphrodite is most venerated. The
religion of Cyprus emulated that of ancient
Greece. Most of the Olympian gods were
worshipped in Cyprus but the most
important cult was indisputably that of
Aphrodite—the Cypriot goddess. She
embodied fertility and love. Archaeological
evidence and ancient inscriptions bear
witness to the existence of numerous
sanctuaries and temples dedicated to the
goddess throughout Cyprus. Your route
continues to Pafos—one of the most
beautiful places on the island. Today Pafos is
a small harbor town and a popular holiday
resort, but in Hellenistic and Roman times it
was the capital of Cyprus. It is home to the
colorful Dionysos mosaics, renowned
throughout the Mediterranean, as well as
picturesque churches, medieval monasteries,
museums, countless antiquities and a pretty
harbor guarded by a small castle. The whole
town of Pafos is a UNESCO World Heritage
Site. Enter the House of Dionyssos to see the
breathtaking mosaics unearthed during the
excavation of a Roman nobleman’s villa from
the third century AD. An extensive complex
of buildings fitted with beautiful mosaic
floors shows Roman legends and characters,
but mostly represent scenes from Greek
mythology. These are considered to be the
finest mosaics in all the Mediterranean. Next,
the drive takes you northwest to visit the
underground Tombs of the Kings at the
necropolis of Pafos, dating back to the 3rd
century BC. You will find here open peristyle
courts surrounded by burial chambers. You’ll
have some time for shopping in the Limanaki
area (the old harbor) where local and
international merchandise is sold.
Afterwards, drive to Yeroskipou Village to see
its remarkable five-domed Byzantine Church
of Agia Paraskevi, dating back to the 10th
century. Those who have a sweet tooth may
want to taste the famous Cyprus delight,
Loukoumi (at your own expense), before
returning to Limassol port.

No one introduced Athens to the world as
elegantly as Milton did—"Athens, the eye of
Greece, mother of arts and eloquence." Your
visit today will begin with the most famous
temple of the Ancient City—the
Parthenon—dedicated to Athena, the patron
goddess of Athens. Walking up a winding
path towards the Acropolis, you will pass
through the Propylaea, and see the
Erechtheum temple and the Porch of the
Caryatids in the distance. Reinforced by the
hand of man, the natural fortress of the
Acropolis stands 230 feet above the city. You
cannot help but be in awe of the view below.
On a panoramic drive through the city, some
of the highlights you’ll see include
Constitution Square, the Royal Palace where
the Evzones keep watch in their traditional
costumes, the Temple of Zeus and the
Olympic Stadium.

General Information
guides, services & transportation:
In certain interesting but off-the-beaten-track
places, professional guides and vehicles are at a
premium. The best available are engaged. For
all tours other than the Signature Collection, it
is exceptional for drivers of public hire vehicles
to speak any language but their own and it is
not always possible to obtain air-conditioned
buses or taxis in many ports. However, we
do our utmost to find the very best excursion
packages for your touring pleasure. Guests who
leave during a tour for which transportation
is included must there-after provide for their
own transportation and services at their own
expense. Transportation standards vary from
country to country.
self-guided excursions:
Guests who do not join these prearranged shore
excursions must rely on whatever transportation is available in each port. If you choose to
devise your own excursion, we suggest that you
remind the driver or tour escort of the ship’s
sailing time. Of course, the ship’s facilities are
fully available to guests while in port.
conditions:
Shore excursions are “Non-Holland America
Line Services” for the purposes of your Cruise
Contract. This means that shore excursions are
not owned or operated by Holland America.
Refer to your Cruise Contract for a full statement of your rights and obligations as well
as those of the Owner of the Ship, Holland
America Line Inc. and certain other persons and
entities with respect to Non-Holland America
Line Services. In particular, please note that you
are assuming the entire risk of utilizing NonHolland America Line Services subject only to
whatever terms or arrangements are made by
you or on your behalf with the third party furnishing the Non-Holland America Line Services.
Holland America Line does not assume liability
for injuries or damages that occur during or
as a result of shore excursions, nor is Holland
America Line liable for loss of or damage to any
baggage or other property which occurs ashore,
for any reason whatsoever. Shore excursions
are subject to cancellations or changes. Shore
excursion operators reserve the right to deny
participation to guests based on such criteria as
they may establish. Children under 18 must be
accompanied by a parent or responsible adult
aged 21 or older.
about pricing, refunds & cancellations:
Rates and descriptions are current as of the
printing date. Prices are subject to change without notice and descriptions may vary from the
actual tour provided. All cancellations that are
made less than 5 days prior to cruise departure
are subject to a 10% cancellation fee. There
will be no exceptions. In addition, if you cancel
your tour reservation after the booking deadline
stated in the Shore Excursion Planning Form on
board, or if you cancel a Signature Collection
private vehicle tour, a 100% cancellation fee will
apply since transportation and services will have
already been arranged.
cancellation of overland adventures and
overnight tours:
of cruising or while on board are not covered by
the Cancellation Protection Plan and are subject
to the above penalties. In the event a complete
tour is cancelled by Holland America Line or
the tour operator, pre-booked refunds will
be handled on board. Very shortly after each
booking deadline/cancellation date, e-mails are
sent from the ship to the agencies concerned,
informing them of our definite requirements for
meals, seats on aircraft, number of automobiles
and motor coaches, etc., and commitments are
made. If notice of cancellation is received after
the booking deadline/cancellation date, a refund
can be assured only if the ticket is resold. Guests
are encouraged to pre-purchase shore excursions. We recommend speaking with the Shore
Excursion Manager on board if you have any
questions about your physical ability to take
part in any shore excursion. Should you opt
not to take the tour following this discussion,
full reimbursement will be made provided the
cancellation is made within 24 hours of boarding the ship. For Overland Adventures and
Overnight Tours, due to the in-depth nature of
the adventures, most areas are not accessible to
wheelchairs and require a considerable amount
of activity.
The cancellation policy for Overland Adventures
and Overnight Tours is (with no exceptions):
• 30 days before tour date: 25% penalty
• 14 days before tour date: 50% penalty
• Within 14 days:
non-refundable
Please note that the Cancellation Protection
Plan covers pre-booked Shore Excursions,
including Overland Adventures and Overnight
Tours, if cancellation is made up to 24 hours
prior to commencement of cruise. Tours cancelled within 24 hours prior to commencement
