unique tree in a lush tropical environment. A seed
so precious it was used as money. A spicy drink
and a sweet snack. Chocolate is all this…and much more.
Explore the relationship between human culture and this
rainforest treasure in Chocolate: The Exhibition created by
Chicago’s Field Museum.
Chocolate will immerse you in a sweet experience,
engage all your senses, and reveal facets of chocolate
you have never thought about before. You will explore the
plant, the products, the history, and the culture of chocolate
through the lenses of botany and ecology, anthropology
and economics, conservation and popular culture.
The story makes its way all around the world, from
Mexico to Africa, where more than 90 percent
of the globe’s cacao beans are grown and,

A
s hard as it is to believe, we’ve turned the page on
another year. This annual ritual always brings a sense
of great pride to all of us at The Durham and this year is
no different. We know that 2008 was filled with many
outstanding accomplishments and that the year ahead
offers endless opportunities for growth. The Durham is
well-poised for the future thanks to the tireless efforts of
Leo Smith who retired in December. The impression he has
left on this institution is deep.
Under his leadership, The Durham has been
transformed into a nationally recognized museum and
learning center, Union Station shines brighter than ever and
students from across the country can “dial up” The Durham
to access educational programs right from their classroom.
I am honored to take over the reigns at such an exciting
time and look forward to building on the foundation that
Leo has helped to establish.
This edition of TIMELINES is filled with information
regarding exhibit and program offerings for the first part
of the year. So much to see and do! We hope that you will

ith only fifteen samples known
to exist, the rarest and most
sought after American coin is the
1804 silver dollar. Interestingly, this
coin doesn’t actually date to 1804
but to 1834. The U.S. Mint had stopped
production of silver dollars in 1803, and none were
made for general distribution until 1840. But in 1834,
President Andrew Jackson ordered that a complete
set of American coins be given to the King of Siam
and other foreign dignitaries in recognition of their
trade agreements. The U.S. Mint selected the year
1804 as the stamp date for the coins and the 1804
silver dollar was born!

EXHIBITS
Moneyville
May 23–September 7, 2009
W
here can you play the stock market, run your own lemonade stand,
put your face on a million dollar bill, and see samples of currency
from pounds to pesos? In Moneyville, that’s where!
Moneyville, which is designed for visitors of all ages, uses the
fascinating subject of money to build math skills and promote economic
literacy in a fun and immersive urban landscape. Colorful backdrops
include cartoon-like structures of a bank, a mint, storefronts, an anticounterfeiting lab, and even a lemonade stand. The 6,000-square-foot
exhibit has hands-on, interactive games that teach kids and adults about
money and economics, while showing them that learning about
these important subjects can actually be fun!
Moneyville was made possible by the generous support of
the National Science Foundation, the James F. and Marion L.
Miller Foundation and The NASDAQ Stock Market Educational
Foundation, Inc. The exhibit was produced and is toured by the
Oregon Museum of Science and Industry.

omplementing Chocolate: The Exhibition, this year’s Business Hall of Fame
exhibit features the Dreibus Candy Company, a prominent local business that
thrived in early Omaha as a manufacturer and distributor of fine candies from
1884 until the late 1930s. This company was founded by German immigrant,
Anton Dreibus. His company reached a recognizable commercial status in
Omaha, where Dreibus was a respected businessman and member of the
Omaha Chamber of Commerce. Featuring numerous artifacts, this exhibit
explores the founding of the company, the Dreibus family, the type of candy
the company made, promotion and sales of the candy, and how the Dreibus
Candy Company fared among competitors.

create the First Transcontinental Railroad in 1869. In addition, April 28 is the
70th anniversary of the “Golden Spike Days” which was a 4-day celebration
that included the world premier of Cecil B. DeMille’s film Union Pacific in
Omaha on the same date in 1939. To celebrate these events, The Durham
Museum will partner with the Union Pacific Railroad Museum to create a photo
retrospective encompassing both anniversaries in the Education Gallery.
ili Shek, a teenage immigrant from China, and 50 other teens, are the
subject of photographer Barbara Beirne’s recent survey of new immigrants’
experiences. Some stories sparkle with optimism, others reflect the hardships
of being culturally and physically different. Many of the teens offer poignant
observations about their new country. The more than 50 black-and-white
photographs in this exhibit, accompanied by the teen’s thought provoking
comments, are offered to partially answer the question of adaptation to life
in this, their newly chosen nation. On loan from the Smithsonian Institution
Traveling Exhibition Services. Sponsored by Greater Omaha Packing Company.
